Nintendo has announced it will be airing a new trailer for Super Mario 3D World + Bowser's Fury later today.
The post over on Twitter notes how "Bowser's Fury will be unleashed", so we guess we'll finally get to learn about this new add-on content joining the Switch version of the game over the course of two minutes.
The trailer will be broadcast at 2 pm GMT, 3 pm CET, 6 am PT and 9 am ET on 12th January. The game itself launches next month on 12th February and can be pre-ordered now for £49.99 / $59.99 or your regional equivalent.

Yeah! An announcement for a new trailer of a six-year-old game! Yeaaaahhh!
Welp, there goes my hope for a direct with an in depth look at 3d world
I'll take whatever I can get!
Looking forward to see just how furry Bowser can get 😜
Can’t wait.. bring on Bowser’s Fury!
Nintendo straight up pulled an Atlus and shared a tweet announcing a date for the next trailer in advance lol
Nice! Kiddos and I thoroughly enjoyed this on Wii U so hopefully we’ll get a peek at why Bowser’s so furious. 😁
Hooray for Wii U port 11, yay!
Good on you if you haven't played this before, but I would love to have something new from Nintendo.
Oh well, roll on next month/year/eternity...
Super Mario 3D World! Meow
@RareFan
Peak drought Nintendo amazing that they insist on doing this with Switch when it’s still redhot, I thought having both their handheld and consoles teams on the same platform was supposed to prevent this?
I have tried to be patient but........GIVE ME A DAMN DIRECT ALREADY!!
GAH!!
Also I cannot wait to play 3D World again, easily one of my favourite Mario games.
But still.....GAH!!!!
@Doofenshmirtz
You don't need an indepth look at a game that already exists. Just go and watch some old reviews!
@SalvorHardin the problem is they're already working on Switch Pro games, it's obvious when you look at all the ports and lack of new first party stuff
@SalvorHardin There's no drought. They obviously have games being made, they just changed the format for the standard of the industry, which doesn't matter for anyone how it's announced anyway but the product. Which is why Nintendo continues to be successful, as consumers care about knowing the product exists, not how it's announced.
I take it that Doug is finally snapping, after all the jokes of the last year or so?
Inb4 clowns come in here trying to say that this reveal trailer somehow proves that general directs are “dead”
@Donkey-Kong-Fan and that Nintendo is doooooooooooommmed!!!!!!!11
Better dedicate at least half of that to Bowser's Fury. I don't need to see any more of the base game along with a 10 second intro/outro.
Please, for the love of all that's Nintendo, devote the trailer to what's not in the Wii U version that most of us here have already conquered.
@Doofenshmirtz Most people got an in-depth look at 3D World over 6 years ago to be fair
Can't wait for 2 minutes of footage of an old game
Nintendo stop spoiling us
Oh yay! A overpriced 60 bucks wii u port. What a time.
@Guest88 Cut them some slack, there's only been about 5 others before this
Heck yeah, I want to see what Bowser's Fury is. I skipped the Wii U. So, I've been waiting since Switch launch for Nintendo to get off their duff, and port Mario 3D World. Whup-PISH!! (that's my whip crack sound)
@Dezzy I meant for the new stuff, but aight
To be fair, the 55 odd million Switch owners (at least) who didn't own a Wii U are going to be in for a treat with this game!
@Doofenshmirtz
2 minutes probably is in-depth, given that it's an expansion for an already existing game. They won't need to explain everything, just how it's different, and how big it is.
this is the ULTIMATE Mario experience imo. It's a masterpiece! would pick this over Odyssey any day of the week! Cat suit Mario!!
Might just double dip if bowser's fury is good. Heres to hope for more info on that tomorrow and less rehash of what is known
Bowser's a furry
I'm gonna laugh if they show nothing about the new stuff. lol
I CAT wait to see what they have in store.
It'll be good to see if BF is worth it or not. Itll help me determine if I stick with the wii u verison or go with the switch version
Not bodeing well for a Direct before March @Grumblevolcano
This game is one of my favourite Mario games of all time. Felt criminally underrated during its release.
The expectation from some in the comments that Nintendo as a dev and publisher should be rolling out fresh first party games nearly every other month to me, is a severely unrealistic expectation especially considering COVID.
Well...
Let's see the direct several hours later from now.
Why are they being so secretive about the only thing that could make this game worthwhile for me?
This game joins Pikmin 3 among titles I'll probably pick up at some point, most likely during one of Nintendo's rare first-party sales. In other words, like I imagine many users probably feel, my enthusiasm for revisiting a last-gen game with some tacked-on extra material is tepid at best.
The Switch may be selling like crazy, but those of us who've had it since the beginning know how heavily they've come to rely on remasters of Wii U titles over the past couple of years especially. That won't sustain consumer excitement in the long run, especially as the PS5 and XBox Series X begin to grow their own catalogs of original exclusives; the Switch is in bad need of a major Direct with plenty of fresh, original reveals...and specific release dates for BotW 2 and/or Metroid Prime 4 sure wouldn't hurt, either.
Whine, whine, whine, some people gonna whine. 🎵
Looking forward to this game, regardless of what Bowser's Fury is. And more games ARE coming. We're only twelve days into 2021, after a crap year that probably sank a lot of plans and announcements (and the pandemic has not magically disappeared just because it's a new year). Patience is needed.
And is this really a sign of a "drought" as someone said above?
Sure, mostly third party, but a lot of them are Switch exclusives coming in 2021.
And we know BotW2, Metroid Prime 4 and Bayonetta 3 are in the works. Any of them a 2021 game? Who knows? Plus there are also some anniversaries this year (Zelda, Pokémon, Donkey Kong, Metroid), something might happen there.
@AtlanteanMan I'm sure what you said will happen considering what you and others said about Nintendo's 2020 and how they broke records instead with their products. You all were saying Nintendo was going to be destroyed by PS5 and Series X in the beginning of the year without a title and the Switch sold more than them on the holiday, alongside breaking records all around.
Also, the majority of the Swtich releases from Nintendo are new, not ports. Over 25 new games and 11 wii u ports from Nintendo.
@Quarth this year could go down as the switch’s best. If BOTW2 releases this year and is well received on top of the list of games you mentioned (especially MH Rise and stories) not forgetting the anniversary stuff. Switch sales could jump to shocking levels. It will be an interesting year for sure.
@Quarth 2020 still had TLOU2, GoT, Cyberpunk (for what that’s worth), Nioh 2, Doom Eternal, FF7 Remake, Half Life Alyx, Demon’s Souls, Miles Morales, Sackboy, Astro’s Playroom etc. It might have been a crap year but plenty devs brought out games and Nintendo absolutely have dropped the ball.
I’ll be logging on at 2pm to watch the Trailer.
I can’t wait! I never played it on the Wii U, so when the pre-install happens around the 5th Feb, that’s when I’ll be truly excited. Going in open minded though, but just hoping for a fun time. But let’s be honest, will happen. It’s a cute platformer featuring the Italian Plumber we all love with an occasional Cat costume that makes him & his mates look like Furries at a Convention.
Guys, I was gonna put a picture of Furry Bowser as a joke, but my goodness, never search up Furry Bowser on Bing.
Edit: It's not much better on Google. I'm not even gonna try DuckDuckGo.
Edit 2: I tried DuckDuckGo. I need bleach for my eyes. Maybe a flamethrower.
@ToadBrigade or they could announce the next Direct date at the end of the trailer
I'm calling it now and saying either
A) Bowser's Fury is a side mode that adds a measly 1-2 hours of new content to the game.
OR
B)Bowser's Fury is just a bunch of levels reha- err, remixed to be harder. (cough Captain Toad cough)
Either way my gut's telling me that I'm going to be disappointed.
After this port, does Nintendo have anything else announced?
Before commencing Bowser’s Fury, the Koopa King ate at a restaurant. What did he have? I’ll tell you: Bowser’s Curry.
What if Champion’s Road ends up being tougher than Bowser’s Fury, as a whole?
Rest in peace, Directs. It was real.
Well that rules out a new Direct then, oh well.
@RareFan a game that not a lot of people were able to play so it's pretty much a brand new game for them!
3D World is a great game that any Mario fan who didn't pick up a Wii U should play. Unfortunately, if they're only giving us a 2-minute trailer a month before release, I can't see how Bowser's Fury will justify a $60 purchase. I would love to be proven wrong tomorrow.
About time. They’ve kept us in the dark for too long.
@nessisonett How, pray tell, has Nintendo “dropped the ball”? Half of the games you mentioned are not quite up to the pedestal of gaming development aside from just newer generation hardware.......
@nessisonett you’re naming big studio games from a lot of different studios. Is it fair to compare Nintendo to the total remainder of the industry?
Nintendo released four big new games last year. Including a sales monster. (AC, paper mario, mario kart, HW:AoC). And some ports sprinkled on top of it.
I don’t see how that’s ‘dropping the ball’. They know what they’re doing. Last year for gamers everything would have been about next gen. So they focussed on the more casual experiences for a different audience. They’re always trying to be in the blue ocean.
@RainbowGazelle New Pokémon Snap, Metroid Prime 4, LoZ Breath of the Wild 2, Bayonetta 3. But if you want actual release dates? Well that's a no, but knowing Nintendo they will announce something soon.
I think I am one of the few people who is calm and happy to see more information about the expansion of this game, yes, it is 6 years old, but it is worth playing it "again" and more on a "portable".
I do not want to comment on the attitude of the people who have commented here, because I do not want to say something unpleasant, but the truth, what despair of many for a Direct, or for "receive" for a small trailer! and believe me that I also want to see something else, but seriously, Is this "desperate child for Christmas" attitude necessary?
@Friendly only one of those games were developed by Nintendo.
I think what @nessisonett means by dropping the ball is that they are not bothering with new games and are just focusing on wii-U ports.
Everyone keeps giving them excuses like Covid for 2020 but they hardly released anything in 2019 either (the Zelda reboot is the only one that sprins to mind) and they don't have anything new announced for this year unless BotW2 shadow drops.
Looking forward to this. BF sounds quite the meaty add on.
More old games. Give me something new Nintendo
@MS7000
The salt is real. Nintendo had plethora of new content last year and they will have this year too. But I do know there is a certain type of people that will never be satisfied.
@Mr-Fuggles777 @Kaori-Chan fair enough.
But 2019 was one of their best years to be honest.
And they helped fund a ton of games too. Such as Marvel’s Ultimate Alliance. I mean, is Final Fantasy VII remake considered a Sony game? Or Demon’s Souls which has been developed by the independent Bluepoint Games?
Vague line.
Wow, this is what we’ve come to, a release date for a trailer...
And I’ve already played and completed the game on the Wii U. It was one if the best games ever imo.
@Guest88 with the game coupons you can save at least some money ...... and - to be fair - at least a new dlc is included - depends what it is and if it is worth to play through - the WORST port so far was "new super mario bros U deluxe" - i regret getting this ***** game ... at least for 60 bucks ....was more like a 10bucks game :/
@RareFan LOL
Please can we stop the negativity regarding Wii U re-releases on Switch? I personally cannot wait for this game and am so excited to be able to experience it for the first time. As far as I'm concerned, this will be a brand new release as I didn't have the Wii U. To those who grumble, you have a choice - buy/don't buy.
@Grot This. Nintendo has put a lot of money in making these Wii U games. Which didn't sell all that well. Now Nintendo has a console that has sold 6-7 times as much hardware, they can finally get that money they deserve.
Also I loved 3D World on the Wii U, and I'm 100% going to buy it again for the Switch.
As someone who doesn't really like to put up with level timers, is this game something that I should consider getting? Given a chance, I'd take Odyssey any day, but is this game enjoyable enough with the timers? I absolutely like the art style though.
Please give us playable Wario
@RareFan lol indeed!
Instead of a Direct or whatever they like to call it. We get a trailer 😂
Disappointment about this probably meaning no new Direct aside, I'm really hoping for new characters. Of course I'm mostly hoping for Yoshi but I'll take Wario, Daisy, or Waluigi too.
Wondering how much more expanded the game really it's though. Hoping they'll show off the new stuff well without spoiling too much.
@nessisonett It wasn't Nintendo's strongest year games wise, but I wouldn't say they dropped the ball. Nintendo had Animal Crossing, Paper Mario and Hyrule Warriors, plus Xenoblade Chronicles DE, Pokémon S&S DLC, Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, Super Mario 3D All-Stars, Mario Kart Live, Pikmin 3 Deluxe, Tokyo Mirage Sessions, Clubhouse Games, Deadly Premonitions 2 (just for a silly comparison with Cyberpunk, lol) and some Smash fighters sprinkled on top. I don't think that's too shabby. Sure, a lot of ports and remakes, but also some brand new games and exclusives. Not to mention indies (Hades anyone?) and multiplatform third party games coming to the console. I understand that if you play your Switch only for the big first party Nintendo games like Zelda and Mario and also played all of the Wii U ports already, you might've been disappointed with 2020. But not every year can be a 2017 or a 2019. And personally I had a great gaming year (rest of it sucked), with a lot of games, both old and new, playing almost exclusively on the Switch.
As someone pointed out above: the Switch has almost 70 million units sold compared to Wii U's 13+ million. There's an audience here (me included) that never played the Wii U ports and we're happy the games are coming to Switch. That said, I want new Nintendo titles as well and I bet we get more information soon. The year has just begun.
@Quarth thanks, you’ve written it out nicely and I agree with you.
I’m also looking forward to the next big Zelda / Metroid / Bayonetta / Fzero (cmon!). But in the mean time, I’m happy with all the other goodies the Switch offers. And in my perspective that’s a lot (maybe because I’m a completionist though. For each game I’m trying to get that 100% I paid for).
As an eternal optimist at least this means when the Direct comes out later this month it does not have to dedicate any time to 3D World and it will just be focusing on new games!
Excited for this! I played the game ages ago, and never got back to it since my Wii U is packed up in the loft, even though I have been itching for a replay of this (and the Zelda remasters). In spite of all the comments complaining about yet another port, I’m sure this is going to sell like gangbusters - it’s an awesome game that only sold around 5.8 million originally, and considering how much larger the Switch install base is compared to the Wii U (>70M vs. 13.6M), there is a huge number of gamers out there who have not yet played it.
I might simply be lucky because of the type of games I like, but with this, Bravely Default 2, Story of Seasons, Pokemon Snap, Monster Hunter Rise, Monster Hunter Stories 2, Rune Factory 5 and Ys IX (not to mention all the cool indies and big first-party Nintendo games releasing this year yet to be announced) all releasing in the next 11 months, 2021 is already shaping up to be a fantastic year for Switch gamers!
I'm hype for 3D World. I never owned a WiiU or any previous Nintendo home console. I've had a Switch Lite for less than a month. I adored 3D Land, and I'm excited about 3D World and hopefully playing it online with friends.
As a Switch newcomer I would agree that 2020 was pretty light for first-party Nintendo but I don't honestly care much. I bought a Switch probably 75% for Indies, 25% first-party stuff.
This is going to sell millions of copies. It's a superb game and deserves a second chance.
As much as I want to see what Bowser's Fury is like, this confirms what we feared: Directs are dead.
There's no point anymore on expecting a new one. Not gonna happen.
@Dezzy I didn't know Bowser's Fury already existed. I must have missed that on the WiiU.
@Kaori-chan agreed.
There weren’t many new games for the ehm... mature audience so to speak. Ones to really sink your teeth into. Age of Calamity or Xenoblade come closest I think. Maybe Paper Mario too. Or maybe deadly premonition, but they butchered that one.
Or actually, I think Good Job is thé game made for the mature audience. I’ve had so much fun with that game. 10/10.
But I can see some people can be disappointed about what Nintendo brought to the table. What helped for me I think is the release of Bioshock on Switch. I had never played one before, and experiencing this collection for the first time was awesome!
But yeah, I can’t wait to get the next Shin Megami Tensei, No more Heroes, Bayonetta, Metroid, Donkey Kong or Zelda too. Let’s see what 2021 brings to the table.
@San_D I don't think I ever ran out of time in a regular level in 3D World. The levels are similar to 2D Mario games, relatively short, linear and much quicker paced than Odyssey.
If I remember correctly there are some levels were it starts you on a 30 second timer und you have to race to the end while collecting clocks to add a few extra seconds, but those only appear in the bonus world after you finished the main game.
@meeto_1
For real though. Especially when nobody does that. You have full on new systems launching with absolute @** and content that (if past history is any indicator) would be heavily scrutinized and billed as mediocre, shovelware and/or filler crap if it was going on with a Nintendo platform.
@AtlanteanMan
I don't know man, maybe you just aren't looking hard enough. I have well over a hundred games and I don't think any of them are from the Wii U. Games ranging from smaller awesome games like Crawl, Carrion(dope)and the great indie title Hades (which was robbed and should have gotten game of the year) to bigger budget and AAA titles like Super Smash Brothers Ultimate, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus & Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3. Heck, I haven't even gotten one of my favorite titles from the Wii U the wonderful 101 remastered on the system. There's certainly more than Wii U ports that they are relying on if one actually cares to look my friend.
@Quarth
Well, if you're not sure how it goes I'll tell you. A situation and stuff like that is only considered a drought when it comes to Nintendo lol. As systems launching with absolutely Jack schitt to play except for glorified DLC, 3rd party games & remasters atm right now is okay. And other companies making their living off of third parties backs or benefiting from their releases buffing them up is more than acceptable. You didn't even hear this much whining in the first 2 and 1/2 to 3 years of the playstation 4 relying on Indies and having next to nothing until bloodbourne came out.
And honestly, I can understand wanting to gobble up every bit of information that you can and the excitement of getting info handed to you hand over fist, but sometimes I just have to shake my head and laugh at the whining and selective outrage when it comes down to how & when things are acceptable or not. And for who. Having all three helped me more & more how inconsistent & seemingly selective some of these arguments are & have been over the years.
@Friendly
Logic & critical thinking...nessisonett's comments weakness.
@gameboy1975 You’re right. Fifa and call of duty are what sells the ps4 and ps5. Maybe together with Final Fantasy and Persona in Japan.
Not so much their first party games. They’re just a bonus for some people. Sales figures show that the attach rate for playstation games is much lower than that of Nintendo.
@gameboy1975 Mad thing is you'd think it was kids doing all the crying in the comment section. It's not. Well apart from Mgene obviously. I'm surprised none of them have kicked off about 3D World not being a 3D game yet, they used to fight tooth and nail over that in the comments, while I would just sit there and laugh at them.
I get why peeps on here aren't bothered about finding out about the main game, but do you think Nintendo are going to ignore the 50+ million people who've never played this and don't even know the WiiU was a full console and not and add on?
As for Directs, what's better for getting the message out + engaging the general public on social media - a 40 minute direct with all the announcements made one day or lots of 1-3 min trailers / snippets peppered throughout the year?
Sure, the long time fans want directs because it's really hype and we can look forward to it, but the wider public don't follow the gaming news, they just want fun games to play on their cool system and they get most of their news and culture alerts from social media.
Nintendo has also been busy updating its existing popular games. It’s not all about new releases.
With Mario, Bravely Default and Monster Hunter over the next 3 months, there’s plenty to get on with in the meantime.
@gameboy1975 Those are all third-party or Indie titles. I'm specifically referring to first-party games.
Mileage varies for each user as far as expectations as well as the genres and titles a given person is interested in playing. As for touting sales figures as a means of rebuttal as some folks seem to insist on doing, that's completely beside the point, which is the percentage of original first-party titles developed and published by Nintendo versus remakes of older ones across the Switch's lifespan thus far. Sure, Animal Crossing is great (I've personally played hundreds of hours myself), but setting its success aside, look at the past 1 1/2 years against the Switch's first year in terms of release frequency and the percentage of new, original games. Surely you can see the difference.
Touting sales figures is for corporate bigwigs, stockholders, and fanboys. Most gamers, however, are mostly interested in what new GAMES are coming out, and when. I don't understand why some folks here think it's necessary to ridicule or attack those of us who point out the changes in Nintendo's first-party release patterns as "complaining", "whining", or claiming we're spouting "doom and gloom". I don't consider anything I've posted as fitting any of those descriptions; I and others are only sharing what we've observed from our point-of-view, as well as our hopes of an eventual return of things like major Directs. If your experience differs and/or you're getting everything you want/expect from the Switch, then more power to you.
@TheFullAndy And in fairness Nintendo would be unwise to lump the Mario 3D World update in with a general Direct too because news of the new games would completely overshadow it!
@Tipehtfomottob
I'm all for the disappointment and even for some of the grumbling... if we're keeping it consistent. As I seem to recall very minimal whinging or much calling out on most gaming forums with the releasing of a remaster like demonsouls for a brand new box. Or when most of the gaming world seemed okay with the uncharted collection getting pressed fairly quickly for the ps4. And when we saw the release of the last of us remastered barely a hair outside of a year of it's ps3 release. Almost as if ot was already in the works for real.
The funny and ironic thing about that is I legitimately didn't hear nearly as much of the same cynicism and criticism about those ports and "cash grabs" (as I've seen them lovely called when certain other companies are doing them). Yet they came much quicker in the game then this six-year-old Port of Mario 3D World. Lack of consistency from the media; gaming community and forums is really the only problem that I have with it all
@WiltonRoots
Lol wow, that's just...sad. 🤦♂️ I'll just leave it at that as I don't want to insult anybody. Oof...
3D World is among the best games of the past decade for me.
When it got announced on the WiiU it almost felt as if Nintendo would be embarrassed to show it. they kept the ball shockingly flat compared to f.e. Mario Kart 8 or Mario Maker which where blown very big especially for WiiU standards.
Still bought it a bit cautiously and... I realized I would never play this game alone. This game did what Mario Kart 64 did on the N64 for me. Its just one hell of a great and fresh multiplayer coop experience. I played it with experienced players as well as less experienced ones and even when playing together everyone had fun. I don't know how they did it, but I imagine its not so simple to hold everything together like this.
I played through it with my wife who barely touches any gamepad. Then again. And again. And just the sheer amount of levels and worlds to unlock was just so good.
Absolute masterpiece. Maybe not in single player which I really never tried to find out in 6 years. But for me this did for 3D jump'n runs what MK did for fun racers or goldeneye for first person shooters. It elevated the whole genre into the mutiplayer arena.
@AtlanteanMan
I'm not going to lie, I didn't really read your message I just skimmed it. And I'm honestly glad that I did. Especially since I saw you talking about sales numbers. Where TF did I say anything about sales numbers? Maybe I'll go back and read it to try and get your perspective , but that right there made me realize I didn't really need to give your comment a serious read.
Great Game and I'll be double dipping. But I hope they don't take out the Captain Toad levels, it's something Nintendo would do for no reason.
I would rather have some Donkey Kong
I love that some fools - despite being told otherwise countless times - still fail to realise that there's over 60 million Switch owners that haven't played this game.
If you are a die-hard Nintendo fan that still lives in denial that Wii U sold like crap, then I pity you. Demand new content all you like, but don't rag on Nintendo for making a sound business decision and porting this underappreciated gem.
@AtlanteanMan I am not attacking you. But I’m just saying you’re picky.
If only first party games count, developed and published, then there’s not a lot of those games on Xbox systems or even Playstation systems.
I think Nintendo systems easily win that round. Even the ehm... gamestarving system that’s the Switch.
Damn I'll be in a web meeting for work at 2pm GMT... Why do I have a feeling my Teams software will magically "crash" briefly at that time. Really excited for this as I didn't own a Wii U and loved 3D Land.
I wonder if they're going to adapt the miiverse features or will they be removed completely, on that note what about stamps and the captain toad levels. Will it have touch screen support? We need answers nintendo!
Personally I'd like to see evenmore ports from Nintendo this generation: Game and Wario, Fatal Frame, Xenoblade Chronicles X and Paper Mario: Color Splash can all be ported asap if you'd ask me.
And fine, give us the two Zelda HD remakes and Star Fox too while you're at it.
Before you ask, yes, I was one of those that didn't own a wii U. (Well, technically, I did, for a week, until I found out that it could not play gamecube games, so I bought a wii instead. My previous wii I left at the student house I was living in before my masters and travelling allover the world). Consider me one of those 'confused' people that did not know what the Wii U was supposed to be.
@Iggy-Koopa
I think most of us are left wondering why a Nintendo doesn’t have much to show. 2020 was a planned slow year.
I’m sure COVID played its part, but it’s a cycle for them.
A port after like nothing for months is just not exciting.
@AtlanteanMan your speaking facts. Most fanboys on here are in denial. Claiming there’s so much to play. If you count old ports and indies sure, but triple a titles and especially NEW first party titles , there’s hasn’t been much since 2017 for switch.
@Mgene15 you're talking rubbish though. If the games released don't suit you then move on. There's tons and tons on switch.

@gameboy1975 Sorry for the misunderstanding; my mention of sales figures wasn't targeting you, but replies from other posters that have harped about them (not just this thread but others as well). I just didn't want to make multiple posts addressing each reply/topic, so I included that in my reply that happened to be attached to your username. Again, I wasn't referring to you specifically and I apologize that my post came across that way.
For the first time in forever...
We get an all new trailer.....
Im coming to the conclusion I am not the biggest fan of Mario games after getting the Super Mario 3D all-stars collection. I like the games but for some reason they don't truly click for my tastes. I do think Super Mario Odyssey is actually great & am exception for me, but overall I have found out I am not a big fan of 3D platforming as a genre. Sorry to disappoint. The confessions of a hardcore gamer 😭
@rjejr Honestly not boding well for a general Direct this year at all. Bowser's Fury being pretty much completely unknown was the best chance of a general Direct. I'm thinking the following will happen because Bowser's Fury is just a standalone trailer:
With a few games that aren't Zelda or Pokemon being announced out of nowhere on social media like Paper Mario was last year and the 3 Smash presentations revealing the fighter in the presentation like Byleth was last year.
@Iggy-Koopa I don't think most folks are complaining about the fact there are ports from the Wii U or about this particular title being remade so much as the widening gaps between original first-party games from Nintendo over the past year or two. It feels like they're trying to "pad" the Switch's first-party offerings with ports that A) require less effort and resources and B) force users to pay the same asking price all over again for half-decade-old games (this is a HUGE argument...at least from a consumer angle...for both having digital purchases linked to user accounts and actual backwards compatibility which would "future-proof" them as Microsoft and Sony are already doing).
Nothing wrong with Nintendo making as many ports from earlier systems as they please, provided they continue to develop original, current-gen specific titles at a sufficient rate. It's the latter that many of us have noticed has become an issue.
@Joeynator3000
Their tweet does specifically say it will be about Bowser's Fury!
@nessisonett,
Those games have been in development for ages, yes it's been a lean year from Nintendo but there have been games, Animal crossing is a massive release for them and look at the sales of the Switch, it's going through the roof again.
The pandemic global pandemic has affected every developer, hopefully more to look forward to in 2021.
@LUIGITORNADO @AtlanteanMan Oh I mostly agree with you, but ports were always going to be a give seeing as how Wii U sold so little. You could have telegraphed that move a mile away, and as much as people complain (rightly so, it's their right) it's a smart move from a business perspective. Arguing against that move just because you have played them before doesn't take away from the fact that millions haven't, and they will sell in droves.
Would I personally like more new content? Absolutely, but I also believe that - coupled with Nintendo's own reluctance to rush things out the door - that Covid played a huge part in making sure the kibosh was put on the majority of dev/pub plans (not just Ninth).
It's not an excuse, it's a reason. I'm certain we will see A LOT from Nintendo this year.
What, no live stream chat for the 2 minute trailer?
Was curious how many comments we could type in 2 minute. 🤣
@AtlanteanMan
It's all good man, I just didn't want to get chewed out for something that I didn't do. I'll apologize for any aggressive stance that I may have taken oh, just used to craziness going on in these comments sections.
@gameboy1975 While I agree with many of the points you've made in this thread, I am wondering if you can make them without resorting to a personal attack. There are some difficult people here for sure, I know, but...
Lost in so many discussions is the simple fact that Nintendo's first-party output is consistently the largest. One problem I see, though, is that most of them feel as if they're Mario games, or feature Mario prominently. It amazes me that Nintendo can go to that well as often as it does.
Their output, however, used to be still greater - back when they bothered with "second-tier" games like F-Zero... sigh
Watched it, was planning to get it anyway but it looks awesome!
@COVIDberry To be fair, back in the days when games weren’t HD, could be made with much smaller teams and when ‘3 year’ dev cycles were considered lengthy. And in an era where DLC, expansions and in-game events didn’t happen.
Naughty Dog made 4 completely original games during PS3 era. 2.5 during PS4. Rockstar has made 1 completely original game this generation. No new Elder Scrolls last gen. One Halo.
You get my point. Games cost more, take longer and require more upkeep today. And they last you longer as a result.
I get people being impatient for new content. I am, too. But it’s just the nature of game development today.
@Grumblevolcano You're killing me Grumble. 😉
My rationale self is w/ ya but the kid inside of me still needs a full Direct in March for whatever we're getting the next 12 months, even if it's games we already know - Zelda 2, Bayonetta 3 - plus they gotta have something new by now, Pokmin 4, SM Odessey 2. Still waiting on Zelda Skyward Sword DX as well.
If the 2MH games are it, well that's not even Nintendo. Nor whatever new Pokemon game we get this year, they can't skip 2 years. Diamond & Pearl are due makeovers. Unless Snap! is it, but that seems a limited spinoff.
Maybe Nintendo will launch the Switch4K in March and just advertise 4k patches and updates for the rest of the year. 😂
@Dringo I agree completely.
At the same time, Nintendo has been slowly expanding its workforce since the PS3 period, and partnerships, or even "sub-contracting" with other studios (I'm thinking of Cadence of Hyrule) make a greater breadth of releases possible. F-Zero GX itself followed this model, with a Sega-Nintendo collaboration.
@COVIDberry Indeed. They’ve been plugging their release schedule with partner studios, third party deals and, of course, remakes and re-releases.
But this isn’t hugely new either. A lot of Nintendo studios are partners rather than owned (Intelligent Systems, Hal etc), while there was always folk like Factor 5, Argonaut, Silicon Knights...
I guess the only point I’m making is that all the big studios make fewer games today. But they compensate by games that live for longer. Back then Smash Bros came out and we were done. We are now into year 3 of the latest Smash game
