Original story (Sun 18th Oct, 2020 10:15 BST): Since the arrival of The Outer Worlds on the Switch this year, Virtuos and Private Division have been hard at work on a patch to improve the overall experience. It's expected to lift the quality of the visuals and also the game's performance.
Now, in an update from the official Outer Worlds Twitter account, it's been confirmed this anticipated patch will roll out on the Switch on 21st October. There'll also be a sale on 22nd October.
Alongside this was the following image, which shows the visual changes in the Switch version:
More details on what is included in the Nintendo Switch patch will be released soon, but for now, you can enjoy this image showing off some of the visual changes.
There's no word on when the game's first expansion DLC will be released on the Switch, but this content has at least been confirmed for this platform by Private Division.
Will you be returning to The Outer Worlds next week when this patch lands on the Switch? Comment down below.

Maybe I will pick this up now. I wish we could get post patch reviews for games. Though it would be much better if we didn’t need patches to make games playable in the first place.
Ouch, still looks pretty bad. It's obvious the Switch wasn't built to handle this kind of game.
Looks good, but i wish every game had Demos to try it first.
I am currently playing it just from the cartridge.
It looks bad but it is completely playable and I am having fun. This is the only thing that counts.
I also have the One X version and the game is awesome looking there!
Nice, was waiting for this. Definitely back on my radar now.
Let's see how it'll look. Very curious about this, I'd like to have this game in Switch.
I have also been waiting for this and this patch coming with a sale is definitely making me consider jumping on it
Wait, wasn't this game super laggy and low framerate, or did they patch it? If they managed to make it look better and hitting more stable 30fps that's really impressive.
@roboshort true, there’s a minor improvement update which is fine. particularly if it is something where the devs may have come up with a more efficient way to process something. But releasing a game when it’s nigh on unplayable is unacceptable.
That might justify another playthrough. Despite the obvious graphics issues, I found the game to be one of the best I have ever played. This gives me a great excuse to play through again. :L
Looks like they’ve added some trees in that first image. I wonder what the ground foliage looks like after this patch. Also hoping performance has been improved too. If so, then I’ll look to purchase now. Although they could have saved some good will by delaying the game until it ran well.
I'm glad the patch is finally coming. I was a bit worried when there had been no news on it for so long.
I was one of the few who really enjoyed it and didn't find the visual downgrade really hindered my enjoyment much. I did end up putting the game down about half way through (nothing to do with the quality of the port), but I'd like to give it another try when the patch is out.
If this patch sorts out the issues i might grab it at some point
Doesn't look like very much, probably will be less in action, I am afraid. Was interested in this, but no chance I'll be picking this up on the Switch. It's so disheartening to see so many 3rd parties do Nintendo dirty.
@roboshort
Joining the call for post-patch updates to reviews... although it happens so often these days, it could be unfeasible in terms of keeping track, and finding the time to do it. But maybe in the instance of "major" cases like this.
Glad too see improvements too the game for the switch. I have yet too play it but will be in 5 days time when it is released on steam.
I have this game still in the cellophane wrapping as I had it on pre order but it a was too late to cancel it before the first reviews were published.
I may unwrap it depending of the general response to how the patch has improved things.
Was looking forward to the Switch port, but the reports on bad performance made me cancel my pre-order. If this patch fixes those issues, I might get the game.
@Rohanrocks88
I played though AC3 after the patch. Didn't experience any of the audio issues that were widely reported.
There was some graphical pop-in and the textures aren't great, but I wouldn't say there was anything that negatively impacted on the experience, for me at least.
If you fancy the game (as a game I found it 'OK to 'good', nowhere near as enjoyable as AC4) then I'd say go for it, don't let the pre-patch reviews put you off.
I have been waiting for this patch... Made me to stop playing due to the rough texture's. Just hope that handheld mode will be better, as I play mostly or exclusively on handheld.
The same people who complain about a game looking bad are the same ones who play nes classics and minecraft.
This is a great game that I really should put more time into, but there are just too many games that expect that too.
@Rohanrocks88 Assassin's Creed 3 plays really well on Switch. I was hesitant after reading reviews but went for it in a sale - no regrets. The problems mentioned in reviews aren't there anymore - audio, controls, framerate all great. Draw distance could be better but it's not much of an issue. The game now is unrecognisable to the one discussed in reviews.
@Rohanrocks88 AC3 shouldn’t have needed a patch to make it play better; the game was a port of a previous generation game, not something newish coming out.
@AJDarkstar Bethesda put an incredibly tight deadline on new vegas. I've heard it was only 18 months. When Bethesda themselves take years to their main line titles.
It's no surprise that New Vegas was buggy.
@AJDarkstar
Or the complete dumpster fire that was the PS3 version of New Vegas.
I still played through it 5 times; it’s my favorite Fallout. But man that version was awful. None of them were good from a performance standpoint. But the PS3 version was on a different level of bad.
Im glad we are finally seeing some improvements here. I was starting to worry this would turn into another long waiting game like Doom Eternal. From what I've seen, the upgrades looks pretty substantial so I'm amped to give this game another go. Otherwise, it can wait till Series X and I'll replay it there, upgraded
The problem is that this was a poorly optimized and rushed port. Just look st zDOOM and Witcher 3. Those games looked and performed very well all things considered. Why? Because the developers took the time to properly optimize them and find a balance between performance and visual fidelity.
The same thing happened with Bloodstained. I'll be sure to check this game out (finally) once the update drops
Well the port devs are located in China thus hit big with Covid, but it also runs kind bad on my X so.. good game though.
Anyway, I kinda of wish they had delayed it and just released it when the DLC. But hopefully this fixes a lot.
Cool, as long as it’s a 50% sale, I may finally pick this one up! 😊
About time.
I might actually pick this up, it should have been one of the best 3rd party games we got on the Switch this year but it ended up looking like a PS2 game.
Hopefully it looks like a PS3 game and portability makes that worth it.
Looks like a decent visual upgrade. I bought this game back when the price was reduced to $40, and I've been enjoying it, but there's no denying that the release version is pretty ugly looking. Happy to see they've been able to squeeze some improvements into the Switch.
Interesting. I'll wait for the feedback on the patch before I buy. I've still got Switcher 3 to play first, so might be a while 😂
I did end up picking this up on Switch, I was just waiting for the patch, then I’ll play it. Looks much improved, I’m just curious how large the patch will be, probably pretty hefty.
@MaseSco
The Witcher 3 is a great port. It’s not as nice on the tv (but it gets the job done), but looks great in handheld mode.
@MoonKnight7 @MaseSco Agreed, The Witcher 3 looks gorgeous in handheld mode!
This is great news. I managed to play the game all the way through on Switch and was pleased despite the roughness of the visuals. Looking forward to future DLC!
As with most people here, I gave up on buying it after seeing the reviews and pre-release footage. I'm glad they're at least acknowledging the issues and trying to patch it, even though that's a tad late. If the patch ends up significantly improving both visuals and performance I will finally buy it, because I really want to, but as it stands now they're not deserving my money.
So I’m seeing more foliage and they added the cloud system back in? It’s fairly minor jump as far as I can tell.
Granted if they get it to run stable and improve textures, I might pick it up.
@TheAwesomeBowser TBH I never ran across the infamous pauses or slowdowns I’ve heard so much about - I’ve about 92%-ed it with 21 hours of playtime and no issues
@Razer I have played some remastered ps2 games recently and it didn't even look like the remastered versions of the ps2 game. It doesn't even look like a ps2 it looks better, more like the black ops 3 for ps3 and xbox 360
What I think people don't get is they base it off of how it looks most the time end not how it actually plays. The game didn't look as sharp as the ps4 or xbox one version but it still looked good enough to be a full running game on a freaking handheld that at least plays like the others. people don't give the developers good compliments they always have to think of the bad stuff. But at least they are doing more to get more people on the outer worlds train.
I would also like Updates to reviews, if they get a significant patch. I think there is something very wrong with charging a premium price for a game with so many issues. I know it is 'playable' but this is not enough for me.
@The-Chosen-one
Yeah, I miss the days of game demos.
Its the reason I still use GameFly.
@AJDarkstar I think that's a gross simplification of the relationship between independent developer, needing project funding to stay in business and a large publisher like Bethesda, who have a very public history of undermining its own 3rd party partners in order to purchase them for pennies.
@AJDarkstar You can't scale down an open world RPG.
He says right there in your article that bugs are inherent to these types of games and that extra time is how you mitigate them.
I'm not implying they don't make buggy games. I'm saying that using New Vegas as the prime example is not fully honest because of the context around its development. Short of turning it to a very short very linear style game, any company would have launched New Vegas a buggy mess.
Hope we get some info on how much it has improved. Haven't had time for this game so fra this year, but hopefully that has just been a convenient waiting and I'd like to be content with paying full price if the developer has made as good an effort that they can.
Happy news. I prefer this game on my PS4 but the portability of the Switch is great for long car rides and journeys on the train.
If it does enough, I might reconsider. Actually the phrasing I used here is one of reconsideration already. Let's say I'm open to be convinced, as I WANT to play this and enjoy it.
There does seem to be a trade off though: the updated version has 31 less ammo and possibly bad weather incoming. But more trees is always a plus.
The Outer Worlds has a lot of open area spaces which is more demanding.
It would quite the achievement to get this running at more stable near-30 fps with more palatable detail.
Let's see this Wednesday ...
I’m not a stickler for graphics and admittedly can’t even really see the differences in the images shown.
From what I can tell, this patch adds clouds?! 😜
I’d have to see it in motion to really tell, probably.
As for purchasing the game, I don’t own it and may pick up in future at a large discount. I’ve just played so many many many hours of fallout and Skyrim that I’m a bit burnt out in the whole thing. Need more time before I engulf myself in something like this again, and it had better be good when I do!
Always nice to see a game get improvements and support. I just wish the game held my interest more. I have it on the PS4, but it just seems dull to me, gameplay and story wise. Just not my cup of tea, I guess.
@Reprise I did the same. I enjoyed the game and the visuals didn't bother me. But i did find the story grew a bit stale. The quest lines were just not very exciting..
@Victus Yeah, that was pretty much it for me too. I just got a bit bored of the various storylines and wished I was playing KOTOR, Mass Effect or Fallout instead. Also, it was really easy on normal difficulty. You end up really OP fairly quickly (probably should have been playing on hard, but I rarely play games on hard).
This port looks so great on the switch!
@Zuljaras While the visuals are muddy on the switch, I too am enjoying the game so far and the portability on Switch is also a great option.
In anticipation for the patch, I finally bought this one yesterday. Only played a little bit and I am really enjoying it so far. I also think the graphics are not as bad as I was expecting either, so when the patch drops, it can only get better.
It's now the 21st and no patch? What's going on outer worlds team? Arg
Eagerly awaiting this now
It's the 21st. Where's the patch?
The patch is there on the east coast of the good ole US of A! I just got a new 1TB microSD so I've spent the last 24 hours downloading all my old games. At least I should never need another card, lol.
Downloading update now.
Another update article
how interesting...
@Coach_A you can, you know, not click the article?
@halljames theres supposed to be a sale on the eshop tomorrow. Can I ask how much did you pay for it and where?
@HeyItsFlapjack
I do not. But just thought I'd point out the inconsistencies with the reporting here.
Disappointing they go where "the clicks" are even if it means going with cat related Twitter or Reddit posts rather than one of the console's best games receiving its 1.0 update. A pretty big moment. How many other early access titles have ever launched on a Nintendo system and had their development completed?
@elpardo1984 To be fair, I wouldn't call it nigh on unplayable. It all depends on your preferences, but I found it in its original form quite playable. Just rather ugly.
I picked this game up on Switch last week. After playing half of it on PS4, initially I was grossed out by the visuals and wanted to sell it.... but then I really got into it, even more than when I played it on the PS4. Got used to the visuals, and it rocks a solid 30fps with the same audio. I'm doing all the side quests, and loving managing my inventory and upgrades. Never had the time to care on the ps4. Just did the update, and I barely notice a difference, but still loving the expereince of Outer Worlds on Switch.
Looks significantly better to me.
The game looks decent after the patch. Seems like they were able to fix the low-res texture problem, and the lighting is slightly improved. It no longer looks like an unfinished game.
Yipee-Kai-ya MF
Updating now...
@Bizzyb I pray McClane is rated R so Bruce can say his full catch phrase. Really cheesed me on Die Hard 4.
For someone who doesn't have a PS4 or XBoxOne or a gaming PC and who has never watched gameplay videos of this game, is it really THAT ugly or underperforming ? Asking for a friend who's seen a sale for it on the eShop.
While I didn't mind the game before, it definitely looks improved now. The increased vegetation is pretty obvious. The sky clouds are stationary/don't move, but they look good up there, adding to the atmosphere. Things just seem overall more crisp than before the patch. Also, it seems to control smoother/tighter than before. Textures look better overall. Character models seem cleaner when talking to NPC's too.
I'm going to enjoy playing through this all over again now...although I've already beaten it once on the Switch already. I have it on Switch AND PS4, and I prefer playing on the Switch with the gyro aiming when looking down the scope, even before the patch and with the game looking nowhere near as pretty.
After downloading the update, the game looks and plays so much better now. The sky's in the clouds look good. More trees and plants with higher resolution details and textures on the rocks and ground. The frame rate seems much smoother. Character models looks better. Handheld mode looks a little blurry compared to when I played docked on my portable gaming monitor. But overall the update is a very welcome addition and gives the Switch version a nice visual and performance boost. This along with gyro controls and HD rumble gives me an excuse to start up a 3rd play through.
@Coach_A Maybe it shouldn't have released in early access to begin with, and instead released the game when finished?
@TheAwesomeBowser considering the game was entirely playable and enjoyable before the 1.0 update makes me see you've clearly never played the game before and have a jaded perspective on the term "Early access"
If the had put all the game on the cartridge, instead of just a small amount and then have to download the rest of the game, I would of jumped on this ages ago.
Now there is another update? Might have well of made it download only or a code in a box.
Great this is finally released, restarted my campaign. It certainly looks better and appreciate their effort. Seems this should have been delayed a little longer to release it like this. I wonder if they were stretched at the time due to doing to bioshock ports etc
@Chlocean was definitely playable and I thoroughly enjoyed the first 10 hours, however it did look pretty rough
@Moonlessky £30 from Amazon UK. I figured the eshop sale would not be that much cheaper than that at the time. I feel the update has improved the graphics a fair bit. Doesn't seem to perform that much better and there is still a fair bit of texture popin. Still an enjoyable game though.
I was almost put off buying this game by negative comments in forums and on here. I'm glad i kept my preorder as it's one of those most fun and engrossing games I've played in ages. I haven't owned a console since Wii and don't have any other current gen to compare to which seems to be an advantage in this respect. Why would anyone expect a current gen game to be perfectly optimized on a handheld system. I have similar feelings about Witcher. I only have a Switch, not everyone invests in multiple platforms and are just content to play as many games as possible.
Where is doom eternal 😫
As good as update reviews would be helpful there would only be a small amount of people who would look at the review. The sheer amount of games released means once a game is released its out in the wild a very small amount of games actually get reviewed. Its also why AAA companies add microtransactions and other BS weeks after release as the review is done. Again very few folk ever amend their reviews to cover those changes.
It does look a bit better now. Nice.
I initially wanted this for Switch, but the delay made me reconsider. Bought it for PS4 and really enjoyed it! Got the dlc too but i didn't have the time yet to check it out. If the update fixes the most urgent problems on Switch i wholeheartedly recommend it! If you like Fallout and Mass Effect this game is for you! Lots of little references to these titles!
Even though i am very eager to play it. I might wait to play it on Xbox Series X.
Got it On release and never got round to it - seems a good excuse to start it
Actually started playing this on my tablet this week and have been enjoying it so far. Neat game and glad they've updated the switch version!
I wish they'd hold off releasing physical versions of games until they are completely finished with updates and patches. I really don't think people who buy physical games are in any rush, especially considering the game came to switch so much later than the other consoles anyway. I think most people would be happy to wait for a complete game on the cartridge.
I was quite excited for this, but now it's just come to the point where I'll play it one day for under a tenner on PS4.
@Coach_A The very definition of "early access" is that a game is released in an unfinished state and has to be patched to be considered "finished". And usually, when a game leaves early access, it's barely finished and plagued with bugs (case and point, Earth: Year 2066). Also, the fact that you're using improper grammar makes it seem that you need to retake English class.
@TheAwesomeBowser
Ridiculous, first of all it looks pretty damn good now. The game was terribly optimized, it isn't a Switch issue but a developer issue. This patch fixes a lot of that.
@TheAwesomeBowser all your comment has done is confirm you haven't played the game.
Risk of Rain 2 is a phenomenal experience made by a team of 3 people that has earned its spot as one of the most enjoyable and anticipated games of 2020.
The Polish and surprising lack of any major bugs or glitches is testament to its care in design.
Also if you're attacking grammar to deflect the attention away from your lack of an argument, that's quite sad.
@echoplex "... is it really THAT ugly or underperforming ?"
Game is not that bad looking after the patch, and performance is fine. Textures are much improved, and it almost looks good at times. Not as good as PC, of course, but the Switch version no longer looks like an alpha build. There are still instances of fuzziness thanks to aggressive use of dynamic resolution, but it's otherwise a fun and playable game. Just don't expect a bleeding edge visual presentation.
If you enjoy RPG and adventure games then it's definitely worth your attention, though I would hesitate to pay full price for it. I got it for $35 a few months ago when it was discounted to $40 and I had a $5 GameStop coupon.
Am a right in thinking there’s going to be an eShop sale for The Outer Worlds today?
@Mountain_Man Thank you !
I might wait for a sale that's more enticing then (20% off but still $55 on the French eShop) . I've got some back catalog to clear out anyway...
Congratulations on the new patch! It's good to see these details. Even if the AO is half-resolution, it's still A LOT better than nothing.
However, performance is still a small problem, but remembering how performance was also a problem even when the graphics were much worse, this is still better than before.
For a stabler performance and full fidelity with the other consoles, I guess I'll just wait for the Switch Pro...
@Coach_A "But just thought I'd point out the inconsistencies with the reporting here."
There is no such thing. If the site was reporting on all or even most switch game updates, you may have a point. But that's not and has never been the case.
They have their own criteria to choose what game updates they report on. If they don't consider newsworthy that update you keep harping on about, that's their decision to make.
@Coach_A I can't tell if you're being serious about risk of tain 2. If you aren't, keep it up, it's hilarious. If you are, just give it up.
Is anyone else having issues with the update not being available yet? I’ve checked several times and it’s keeps saying I’m playing the latest version at 1.02.
Ideas?
Thoughts?
@TellEveryone I had the same "issue" yesterday, and after some research, it seems 1.0.2 is 1.2. Not sure why some say 1.2, others 1.0.2, but I can confirm mine is 1.0.2, not 1.2. (1.0.1 was released in May, I believe?)
I thought this game was eternally doomed - alas it now seems like the right time to Jump in! Whereas Doom Eternal for Switch seems to been forgotten in some outer world. This makes me sad.
@roboshort https://youtu.be/B1ZoCG1pvjs
@Mountain_Man How is it in handheld?
@pennylessz Handheld mode works very well and is probably the preferred method of play since the smaller screen tends to hide a multitude of sins. I played the game docked, and while it ran well enough, the use of dynamic resolution was much more obvious.
