Which games is Waluigi in though? (If i had to guess, the Mario tennis games, to play doubles with Wario) I'm not into the Mario sports games myself, so the only place i have seen him is on the internet.
Meh, the ROMpacks are out there now and there's no way to get all the copies removed, Nintendo can play whack-a-mole with seperate websites all they like, but ROMs will always be available, and IMO that's a good thing.
Imagine having only a hugely expensive retro-market (Even more so than it is now) and Nintendo's "Let's toss them some scraps so they'll stop asking"-policy as resources for retro games, that would be pretty bleak indeed...
Ok, maybe i missed something, but what's with all the Waluigi-fanaticism all of a sudden?
He never had a major appearance in a game (I think he started as roster-filler counterpart to Wario in some Mario sports spinoff), nothing that leaves any sort of lasting impression that he's actually a cool character, is it all just some internet-meme that got out of hand?
The graphics engine is fine, the gameplay is great, what need is there for a whole new game?
Mario kart is just the sort of game where DLC works well instead of releasing a new game, where the big new things are pretty much just new tracks and characters, better to add those as DLC than have us pay $60 for a not-really-new sequel.
@justin233 I totally agree, if part of the reason Switch games cost what they do is due to expensive cartridges, why is the digital version just as expensive?
And that’s based on the RRP, if stores have sales, digital is more expensive than the version with the oh-so-costly cartridge.
Well that’s just a stupid mistake by Nintendo then, the Switch is starting to slow down a bit, 2018 is halfway over, to still keep games slated for this year a secret makes no sense at all...
There's one problem with "reaching a demographic that's not traditionally reached by games at all", and that's the issue of why they would spend $300 on a Switch in the first place?
$300 for a Switch and then the price of the Labo-kits themselves is a very steep hurdle for "People who aren't traditionally reached by games" to get into Labo, no matter how cool it is...
@ALinkToThePasta The story of D5 was pretty off-putting to me too when i played through it, the endless nattering about a super-extra-special move felt pretty lame to me, but i finished Disgaea 1 way back on the PS2, it has a way better and funnier story, if D1C has the quality-of-life improvements D5 brought, it’s a must-buy for me!
@Redax Nintendo had to do something about the outcry over “pokemon - training wheels edition”, that forced their hand to announce gen8 too, circumstances like that aside, Nintendo just adore the whole secrecy thing...
Lump me in with the "I'll believe it when i see it"-people for Reggie's rather bold claim, i hope Switch will get more games of course, but there have been several generations of poor third-party support, that's quite a tough trend to break...
I think that spending so much time on Smash (To the extent of nattering about Wii fit trainer’s face details) gave the vibe that there’s not much else to announce, and that would have casual observers worried.
Bit of a wonky comparison IMO, Pro for Eevee: It can evolve into 8 pokemon, Con: It refuses to evolve and 5 of those evolutions aren’t in the game anyway! Hmmm... ~_~
That being said, it’s Eevee for me, i’m just not a big Pikachu fan.
I’m a pretty casual player, i like pokemon training and collecting, nothing too in-depth, so the biggest thing i’m missing in the “Let’s go”-games is the compatibility with the mainline games and the six-hundred-something pokemon that aren’t there, and maybe monster battles, but for people like me the “casualized” games seem like a pretty good fit...
I don't think there are more jittery people on this planet than stockbrokers, those guys are as twitchy as hummingbirds on a "Red bull"-diet, the slightest thing will send them in a frenzy...
It's probably for the best that the "Quality of life"-project (Whatever it was) is dead, Nintendo should stick with what they're good at: Making games and consoles.
Frankly, i think a N64 mini wouldn't do so well because the visuals have aged spectacularly poorly, early 3D graphics look horribly fuzzy and blocky in shape, which will put a lot of people off.
Sprites have this sort of ageless factor to them (People are still making 8-bit looking games today), somehow they don't look nearly as dated, but seeing N64-level graphics on a new TV (With all the visual sharpness to show how low-poly the models are), the gameplay will still be fine, but when everything is low-res, low-poly and stuff, it still detracts from the experience a lot.
@bezerker99 That’s true, and easily the most mind-boggling part of the whole story, a switch costs $330 or so, for that money i doubt you’ll get 5 minutes of the lawyer’s secretary’s time...
And frankly, both Nintendo and Nyko are bound to have clauses in their product disclaimers to protect themselves from lawsuits like this one anyway, trust corporations to cover their backs.
@jmh363905 Not to bash you (Or Nintendo for that matter), but what is the actual point of a standard if it's "More of a guideline"?
Although i agree with the "If Nintendo are dead-set on doing proprietary things with the dock, make your own proprietary standard"-argument, this whole affair is a matter of all three parties (Nintendo, Nyko and the end user) doing their share in this mess...
@Ooyah I would love a pokemon-game with a more Skyrim-like setup: There's a big storyline with cutscenes, plot twists and what-have-you, but you can also ignore it and start exploring random caves after the first village, and then pick up the story again after a while (Or just leave it, as the case may be), but beyond the first 20 minutes of the game you're not stuck on rails anymore, SM and USUM were horribly railroading and all those cutscenes... ~_~
@WinterIceFox Why not? Why couldn't Nintendo release two big titles in the holiday season?
Nintendo have set their sights (And sales projections) for the Switch pretty high, one might argue that they need a broadly appealing heavy hitter like Pokemon to reach those targets, and few games make loads of people yell "Shut up and take my money!" quite like pokemon, so i ask again: Why wouldn't Nintendo release it for the holiday season?
It's a tricky one, on one hand you can't account for crappy third-party docks, but on the other hand Nintendo are using a USB standard connector without sticking to said standard in the more technical part (The whole bricking thing)...
It can well be argued that using a standard plug raises expectations that the device sticks to that standard as far as power consumption, communicating with the dock and such go, Nintendo just doing their own thing in that regard can be seen as deceptive (Should have used a proprietary connector then, to make it clearer)
That this problem happened a lot more frequently since a particular OS-update makes it seem (Rightly or not) like a conscious attempt to lock out competing docks, which is also bad form towards the consumers, again: if you don't intend to stick to a standard, make proprietary connectors and protocols.
@mikegamer It's more about the people who are less knowledgeable than us, they see "Switch dock", maybe "USB-C compliant" if they're halfway tech-savvy and assume it's alright, and then (To a layman) buying a dock for half the price seems like a good idea.
The least Nintendo can do is publish an explanation of some sort as to what is going on, just saying "Buy our stuff and you'll be fine" without any explanation why that is so comes across as pretty arrogant, and ruining the goodwill they got with Switch so far over something like this seems a bit silly to me.
Also, why use a standard-connector when you're going to do non-standard stuff with it? That's just asking for confusion...
In my own experience, video games provide an outlet for aggression rather than inspiring it, the sole thing connecting video games and shootings is that often the shooter played violent games before the incident, but in a country filled to the brim with violent movies, TV-shows and guns being a deeply-ingrained part of the culture, i doubt the one thing pushing somebody from "Nerd rage" to "Imma shoot some people!" would be a video game...
An all-digital future is inevitable (All for the convenience of the console makers!), but i will stick with physical as long as i can, i dread reading about servers being taken down and games that people paid good money (and lots of it) for just being gone because, well, Nintendo is done with it, so now you are too!
The one big flaw in the Switch IMO is that it combines the downsides of both physical (minor downsides here, how hard is swapping a cartridge or remembering where you put it?) and having to download stuff (Servers not being around forever, download times, taking up storage space), now if you’ll excuse me, i’ll go and gaze wistfully at my collection of gameboy cartridges...
Nintendo have said this same stuff several times before (The legendary "Third pillar" spiel, for instance), but what i see in the stores is that 3DS is on its way out, Switch is getting more and more shelf-space at the 3DS' expense, and that's some capital-letter writing on the wall right there...
What’s with all the sweeping “Crowdfunding sucks”-statements here? It’s just a matter of checking is the people running a campaign have any experience in their field.
I backed several campaigns so far: the NES and SNES books featured here on NintendoLife (By a company with more retrogaming books under their belt), “Shantae: half-genie hero”, by Wayforward, some card games by people who had a manufacturer ready by the time they ran their campaign, they all had one thing in common: they either were or were working with somebody with experience.
Sure, approach “This is the first time we’re doing anything like this”-campaigns with caution, but saying “Crowdfunding sucks because some campaigns fail” is a bit overly simple...
I’m mainly a pokemon collector, multiplayer and endgame battle contests are out forme since the whole “Eugenics program to get perfect IVs”-thing IMO runs counter to the whole Pokemon concept, discovering new friends and travelling with them
And as a collector and explorer i would like a Skyrim-like setup: there’s an overarching storyline, but plenty of diversions like quests and out-of-the-way places with specific pokemon that you can go do instead as well, put in as many pokemon as feasibly fit in the world as well.
And for the love of everything holy, make a Switch pokebank client, having to leave pokemon that i spent 10+ years with behind would be a dealbreaker...
@Razer It all goes into FMV cutscenes, voice-acting and loads of other stuff everybody skips after the first playthrough (If not sooner), Nintendo games often use in-game assets to do cutscenes, which is almost as good visually and a lot less space-intensive...
I would like a game in the “Super Mario bros. 2”-style (Even if it originally wasn’t a Mario game, it is one now), it’s certainly a different approach, and nothing has been done in that style since the release of “Super Mario advance”, which was a Gameboy Advance launch title...
I have a lazy eye, so i never really got the 3D effect to work for me (Getting both eyes to cooperate at it is tiring), i thought the new 3DS face tracking feature might help, but since i wear glasses too, it doesn’t work!
So all in all, i’m not really missing it, the only game i played that actually made use of it gameplay wise was “Super Mario 3D land”, with those bonus rooms with the perspective tricks...
It’s a shame, “Metroid: Samus returns” is an awesome game, but since the 3DS is on its way out (At least it’s going out with a bang ), so that can explain the low sales, let’s just hope that this doesn’t negatively affect the future of the Metroid series...
@SLIGEACH_EIRE It's a pretty popular bit of trivia in those "Messed up stuff in 'all ages' video games"-articles on the internet, along with the spookier Pokédex descriptions of ghost/dark Pokémon
@crimsontadpoles For a portable console you really don't want to use disc media (I have a PSP, the load times and drive noise are horrible), the current situation with Switch is far from optimal, but faffing around with discs would be quite a lot worse...
@Expa0 That shouldn't last long, i think this fall/Xmas season will be the 3DS' last, a few big games and then life-support...
It's a tricky balancing act, abandon the old console too soon (Before the new one has enough games to be an appealing alternative), and you stand to lose customers to competitors (Or the dreaded mobile gaming), but wait too long before taking the leap and the new console suffers or might stall completely.
Nintendo are taking things at just the right pace, With Mario, Zelda and a good supply of indie games either out or coming soon, the Switch should be all set to take over from the 3DS by Christmas '17/Early '18...
I'm pretty sure he meant the "It killed Iwata"-comment (Poor choice of words that it was) more in the sense of "This headache is killing me!" than in the "The job literally killed him"-sense.
That being said, he brings up nothing new, the usual "Crappy third-party support, weak hardware, doom! GLOOM!"-talk...
@SEGATA_DREAMCAST I think the heart of the matter is that it doesn't help the Switch user much, it seems that there are enough 3DS users still around, or Nintendo wouldn't have done this...
I think the mainline Pokémon games after US/UM will be for the Switch, but giving people a bit more time to Switch over (Pun not intended) makes sense, at least for now...
@SEGATA_DREAMCAST Supporting a system for a while after its successor releases is (in my opinion anyway) good business sense, it keeps the people who can't buy the new system right away still playing your games, not everybody can just drop $300 on a new system right away... (Not to mention supply issues)
Well, seems the 3DS gets one last Christmas hit before the inevitable step-over to the Switch, gives Nintendo some more time to get Switch production up to speed, then late next year or early 2019 a mainline Pokémon game for Switch...
@BAN Lovely speech there, shame i neither called anybody "NDF" nor "threw a tantrum", i just made the (IMO pretty fair) point that being a Nintendo fan doesn't immediately preclude any critical thought about their practices...
@BAN Being a Nintendo fan and this being a Nintendo fansite doesn't necessarily mean critical thought should go out the window, £80 is a lot for what is in essence a charge cable/HDMI hybrid...
@jwfurness You're right, i played some of my old PSX-games (I know, heresy! ), and i had a really hard time getting over just how hideously ugly everything was, so i went back to my SNES...
But yeah, the comparison falls a bit flat, the 3DS is a nice console with some awesome games, but a "cadillac" would have had way better screen resolution, at the very least...

@SEGATA_DREAMCAST Supporting a system for a while after its successor releases is (in my opinion anyway) good business sense, it keeps the people who can't buy the new system right away still playing your games, not everybody can just drop $300 on a new system right away...
