There have been rumours since earlier this year that Nintendo would release a few older Zelda games at some point this year to celebrate Link's 35th anniversary.
While 2021 is not over yet, The Legend of Zelda series producer Eiji Aonuma has seemingly shot down hopes of classic Zelda games returning this year at the very end of Nintendo's E3 Direct.
Here's exactly what he had to say during a segment revealing a new Zelda Game & Watch:
"This year the original Legend of Zelda game reaches its 35th anniversary, while we don't have any campaigns or other Nintendo Switch games planned, we've been working on this Game & Watch system as a special item to help mark the occasion and reflect fondly on the earliest days of The Legend of Zelda."
As you might recall, VGC's Andy Robinson previously said The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess and The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker would "100%" be returning this year. He's now shared an update:
Back in February, industry Insider and GamesBeat journalist Jeff Grubb explained how Nintendo wanted The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD to be the 'sole' focus until at least July, to ensure it would get all the sales and attention it deserves and wasn't overshadowed by the more popular entries.
"This is still marketing. And Nintendo will want to position The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword HD out in front. This is one of the biggest reasons that Nintendo didn’t talk about other Zelda beyond Skyward Sword HD in its [February] Direct video event. The company doesn’t want other Zelda games to distract from its attempts to bring back Skyward Sword."
Grubb has now also shared his own updated thoughts - stating how Nintendo might be holding off in case The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild sequel doesn't make its release target of 2022.
So, there you go - these rumoured games are still apparently a thing, it's just Nintendo might have potentially pushed back the release dates. And if Zelda's 35th anniversary is like Mario's, it should technically run for an entire year - which would take it up to next February, aka. next year. Meaning there is potentially still a chance of more Zelda games arriving during Link's anniversary celebrations, perhaps just not in 2021.
What are your own thoughts about all of this? Do you think Nintendo has announced enough for Link's 35th anniversary? Do you think these other rumoured games will turn out to be real? Leave your thoughts down below.

why is Zeldas the weakest? well at least he got games for his. unlike donkey kong (So far).
I would love to play TP and TWW on the Switch, but I do understand the strategy behind a potential delayed release. Bring 'em out during the next drought.
There will be bigger anniversaries. Maybe even when Nintendo actually needs to rally excitement for its hardware, you never know
just. look at super Mario 3D WORLD + Bowser's Fury. that came out this year. when Mario's annv. was last year. so a Zelda collection could still come out early next year. not guaranteed but I would not count it out.
Oy. Just admit you didn't actually know anything about Nintendo's plans, fellas. Sheesh!
Well some cool romhacker dude asked what would happen if Zelda and Donkey Kong had a baby?
I’ve never played Wind Waker or Twilight Princess, but have been getting into Zelda more since I got back into gaming in 2018 and would like to play them. I even bought a used Wii U recently for the Virtual Console. If they shut down the Wii U eShop before confirming these for switch I’ll definitely buy them prior to the shutdown. Used physical copies for Wii U still go for more than the eShop prices.
The good news is I still have plenty of Zelda games to catch up on.
Perhaps dopes ought not to take rhetorical uses of "100%" literally, but then they wouldn't be dopes.
I wasn’t expecting these ports to be at e3 but I was surprised that they specifically mentioned that no other games are planned right now.
At least the Zelda game and watch looks better than the Mario one, Links Awkening is a nice add on, but Hopefully they will have more than just that for the 35th
This is a shocker, but maybe the people who "Leaked" the collection were just either fed false info, or saying things for clout? Another reason not to believe every "leaker" that comes along..
We’ve waited for Metroid Dread for a much longer time. We can wait a little longer on these HD remasters. They’re available elsewhere anyway.
All I can say is I really hope that Ocarina of Time 3D, Majora's Mask 3D, Wind Waker HD, and Twilight Princess HD will be added to the Switch eventually. I love the idea of getting all the major Zelda games on one system. Whether that be in one big collection with all four games (impossible) or two separate releases each with two games (probably possible), I just hope it happens.
Don’t worry, people will continue to foolishly get their hopes up even though Nintendo has said what they want won’t happen, I mean it’s not like Nintendo is aware of what Nintendo is really planning right?
Skyward Sword HD, Hyrule Warriors Age of Calamity DLC and a new Zelda Game & Watch is quite enough, in my opinion.
The best thing about E3 is that it proves all these "Nintendo insiders" are 100% full of *****.
One Zelda game per year. Is that not enough?...
Not saying we will get anything else for the anniversary but the lack of info at e3 doesn't dismiss the possibility. Nintendo is also known to straight lie about stuff. Didn't they announce mario 3d all-stars a month before launch? Also, with skyward sword just around the corner they may want to wait until after the release before talking about other zelda stuff this year.
@3RedTriangles You speak as if Nintendo is incapable of changing their plans in response to leaks.
It would be a shame not to get another anniversary collection like we got for the Cube.
@jon625 Unless you want the portability of the Switch, you are probably better off with the WiiU versions because of the gamepad support.
I’m over here scared that this means Kirby’s 30th might not really get celebrated next year
Rumor does not mean fact @nintendolife
@roboshort
Thanks. I do almost always play the switch in handheld mode sitting on my couch so the Wii U gamepad should work fine. I guess a part of me feels like buying a physical switch copy would be more durable into the future because switch consoles should be pretty easy to find for quite a long time if one breaks. A digital copy on the Wii U may be less easy to keep access to if the Wii U breaks. I am probably overthinking it though. If I just buy it and play it right away it will be fine (I don’t replay games too much), but I already build up quite a backlog on the Wii U so I hope it lasts a while.
My Wii from 2007 broke the day I got the used Wii U so that got me thinking about consoles not lasting forever.
Nintendo wants Skyward Sword HD to do well. That is probably why they are holding off big games
I honestly don't care much about Zelda this year, for me the money is on Metroid Dread, Bayonetta 3, Monster Hunter Stories 2, and the Pokemon games. I'm sure Nintendo is saving that new Donkey Kong for a later direct maybe after October so I'm definitely looking forward to that.
As for next year my money are saved for Project Triangle Strategy, Dragon Quest III remake, Bayonetta 3, World War Z, Crysis 2 & 3 Remastered, The House of the Dead Remastered, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder's Revenge, Sonic Origins Collection, and more.
I also don't think Nintendo would announced Switch Pro until either late next year or early 2023. Switch is still selling good right now that Nintendo probably don't want sales to dip in the coming months or years. Announcing the Switch Pro now means people will just stop buying the regular Switch or Switch Lite and wait for the Switch Pro instead which could cause the Switch sale to slump, a situation Nintendo don't want happen yet.
No plans for any more 35th anniversary releases means no plans to port the GC Zelda games to Switch. In other words, the 100% coming tweet was 100% fake.
@Don In other words the guy should had never spill the beans, now Nintendo makes sure it would not happen. Still kinda odd that Nintendo would throw us every Wii U ports but not the two that we really want.
Please please please please please.. I would do anything to have these Games on switch so my kids can enjoy them with me on the big screen
@jon625 The Wii U have Wind Waker HD and Twilight Princes HD. You could pick these games up on your Wii U?
Here's the thing. I think Zelda fans would have been thrilled to get new BoTW2 footage and a Game and Watch if they hadn't been expecting all these rumored games. Now Zelda fans are mad at Nintendo because someone else's rumors didn't come true.
They're bluffing!
From the arrogance of his 1st Tweet (referencing his own person opinion as a fact that only 1 out of the 3 mentioned Zelda games is good), i think It’s karma that he has made himself look like a Tw*t
It didn't surprise me. I've been saying the celebration is bland for months now. The Game & Watch is cool, but it was kind of leaked already and no surprise at all.
What I don't like is how the companies keep celebrating anniversaries in the brink of the year or even when it's passed. Just work well in time, guys...
Works for me. Anyone who’s complaining that a game and DLC this year, a huge game next year, and a retro game device this Christmas is inadequate for an anniversary is very spoiled. Other series are getting one new game disconnected from any coincidental anniversary, and many more are lying dormant. Zelda’s future is extremely secure—enjoy the several games and paraphernalia Ninty’s offering you. Besides, it’s not like WW and TP will never return.
Solid direct. People jumping up and down about games not being announced. Nintendo are in a strange place as if they had of shown a Zelda collection and a glut of other titles the fans would still moan it wasn't enough (same every E3 and direct.) Considering we are still in a pandemic they did good. Shouldn't have been called E3 this year. Just "The Nintendo and Microsoft show."
I wish people would realise that these ‘leakers’ are simply making stuff up, they are fantasists, dreamers, basically liars for want of a better word.
Mario in 85, Zelda in 89, Metroid in 87, star fox in 93, Fire Emblem in 90, DK country in 94, Pokémon in 96 ...
You know what year Nintendo has a huge, beloved IP's (number that divides by 5) anniversary?
EVERY FREAKING YEAR, SOMETIMES MORE THEN ONCE IN THE SAME YEAR.
So that's all we want Nintendo to do now? Spend 100% of their time making sure that at each arbitrary divides by 5 numbers we choose to start caring about they have a huge new celebration for all their IPS and characters?
Get into politics or something so you don't have to set around all day coming up with the next laughably stupid thing to get upset about.
Wow how disappointing. I guess they want to keep Windwaker HD and Twilight Princess HD in reserve for later years and potential barren months. Not necessarily this year as well. Also just in case BOTW2 is delayed in 2022 as others have speculated
People really, really need to let this Anniversary thing go. Nintendo have big anniversaries every year, they aren’t going to honour them and it doesn’t mean you’re going to get loads of games in that franchise.
The lifespan of the switch has shrunk for me. 2 years left in the old console
I would be lying to say I wasn’t disappointing, but I am not overly bothered about TWW and TP, I would rather see OTT and MM, as they haven’t had a rerelease like the other two.
I'm sure TP & WW will come ... Probably still this year but maybe next, I don't mind when
I’d no intention of playing them again anyway so not bothered if they came or not.
Skyward will be dead in the water as you can’t play with button only controls unless your in handheld. So it’s still motion which is why it struggled to sell the 1st time round on a system with a similar install base.
Funny, I actually wanted this game & watch before realising that I have these games on my 3DS.
If nothing more is coming, they can do the bare minimum and release classic Zelda titles from GB, GBC and N64 to their Switch Online service.
Kinda surprising NGL
I'd love to have wind waker, twilight princess, Majora's mask, ocarina, party golf 2, old Bomberman games like SNES and PC Engine ones with online multiplayer with random people and very low load times and 60fps, a new Kingdom New Lands/Two Crowns game, a new 3D Donkey Kong game, all the awesome Konami baseball games for Switch translated and released physically in North America, and more, but I've got a backlog the size of Everest. Plus, I'm just very happy that Advance Wars is coming to Switch. That is freaking awesome.
I believe that we'll be getting these games at some point, but was always skeptical about this year. Certainly didn't expect an announcement before Skyward Sword is out, but Aonuma's wording in the direct (or at least the translation of his wording) seems to imply that they won't come this year at all.
Also - can we stop taking everything "insiders" say at face value? I'm willing to accept that they know more than the average person, but I think they've been wrong enough (or moved the goal posts enough) to make it clear that nothing that they say is a given.
Pretty disappointed all we got was the oldest and easiest to find Zeldas on a game and watch, rather than a 3D collection on Switch.
I remember Aonuma saying that WW:HD for Wii U was a very quick process and used very little team resources. You can count on these coming to Switch at some point, but they will be used as 'appetisers' for when/if BotW2 gets delayed. Just like how WW:HD and TP:HD were used when BotW got delayed time and time again.
I haven't believed Nintendo denying existence of stuff their working on since the 3DS. Don't remember the specifics, but they said they had weren't making the XL or something like that then a couple days later made a full reveal.
@jon625 Good point. WiiUs may get really expensive. I never really considered that. I prefer digital but what you said has me a little worried and makes me think Steam may be the better option for non-exclusives… though I probably won’t go that route.
@CairiB What do you mean?
They both came out on the 3DS
They will drip feed us these. And as annoying as this is on on one hand, it also makes PERFECT business sense.
What’s up with the anniversary obsession? They occasionally do these and they’re fun and all, but if there was an anniversary celebration and product line for everything at every milestone, it would just be anniversary campaigns all the time with no room to breathe or make anything special.
Also when they say no to things, they mean it like 98% of the time. I would take their word on this one. There’s skyward sword, this lil game and watch thing, HW dlc packs, and botw2 coming, they are definitely not cramming more Zelda in
Weak Nintendo. ‘Nut up or shut up’ to quote Tallahassee
Do we really have to go over this every time? How many times has Nintendo said they have "nothing to announce" and then revealed the exact thing they were asked about a few weeks or even days later?
@NinChocolate You're 100% right. The company is on top of the world right now and "35" is not a hugely significance number. Plus, COVID probably made planning anything big globally hard.
I was hoping for a battle royale and maybe some weird remixes/challenge modes for NES/SNES online. Oh well...
I'm not disappointed, nor am I surprised. Both Age of Calamity and Skyward Sword are criticized way too much and deserve better, so give those two games a chance.
Still no Metroid Prime Trilogy
Still no Zelda collection
You'd think Nintendo could try harder for both anniversaries
Would I love for Wind Waker and Twilight Princess to come to the Switch? Absolutely, however there's plenty of games coming out, that'll keep me busy in the mean time until then. If/when Nintendo ever makes that announcement, I'll buy them for sure, but they don't owe anyone anything.
@NerdyBoutKirby But breath of the wild 2 isn't supposed to be released for the anniversary.
It's the first big original zelda release for the system because breath of the wild 1 is actually a Wi U game which came very late in Its console cycle.
Maybe there won't be more games for the anniversary, but I hope there is other merchandise at least. I'm a sucker for Zelda.
Ah well, what a bust, wait until 36th anniversary then sigh
@NorseGamerTommy I would say that’s a little different to an on tv experience though, which is what I still hope for.
Been waiting for a windwaker port since the switch came out!
suddenly, I dont think as lowly as I did of Mario's 35th. At least Nintendo put in token effort, even if it was under protest.
I kinda want to bitch about the Metroid Prime trilogy as well, but seeing that Dread was announced and it's imminent arrival, I don't think I can justify it.
How hard would it be for them to port the other HD remaster Zelda games from Wii U to Switch? Come on.
@HeadPirate Zelda and Metroid are both 86
@tzahn that's exactly what happened with the 30th anniversary ;P
@KimBread Technically the anniversary only just began this year and thus doesn't technically end until February(?) next year iirc.
So... who knows.
@LEGEND_MARIOID Honestly tbh with the mess that was COVID and all I can see that as them taking a careful approach.
I.e.: keeping stuff in reserve if something is delayed from it's intended release, and thus have something to release.
Plus even if it's held back in case BOTW2 doesn't make it's release date, the other way around could happen: they could be 2022 titles, by which time Skyward would have made all the sales it needed, released as a side-thing during the year to build up anticipation for BOTW2 or such. Especially if it release in the later portions of the year or so.
@UndoControl Honestly, expecting the announcements before the release of Skyward was kind of a fool's game so you're onto something there. They could easily be an holidays release(iirc except pokemon remakes in November, which are a Pokemon Company thing, Nintendo doesn't have a whole lot lined up after Dread and I could see some Zelda surprises in December, half a year from now).
Plus they could be used, after Skyward did it's sales, in 2022 itself to create a gradual lead-up of anticipation for BOTW.
Or plenty of other things.
@Beermonkey To second your statement: if WindWaker and Twillight were announced some might have complained about there TOO MUCH games with Mario Golf/Monster Hunter Stories2/Warioware/Advance Wars remakes/Metroid Dread/Shin Megami Tensei V/Pokemon Diamond&Pearl and then not one but two Zelda ontop of that in a timespan probably just before Pokemon Legend Arceus next January?
Like.... I want Windwaker again but also I'm low-key glad it's not this year because I'm starting to have troubles pacing out my purchases and having to really "choose" which one I'm interested in(I might get Mario Golf of all things because my library is stock full of singleplayer/coop game but has only like... Mario Kart/Smash Bros pure pickup&play multiplayer wise)
Unsurprising considering Nintendo's recent discovery of our unhealthy obsession with legacy content.
Still not buying Skyward Sword tho.
No Switch games planned, but what about Switch Pro?
@Papichulo Ha, I remember seeing this on RomHacking.net. I have to check it out some time.
This is slightly worrying... I really expected WW/TP HD to be released this year, it just seemed so obvious.
I don't see why BotW2 would miss its intended release date. It's clearly coming mid-2022 or before, I'm not expecting it to be released at the end of next year. The game was announced two years ago, was in development since 2017 I suppose, and is already noted to use the previous game as a base. I feel this game is coming sooner than what it seems.
If I wanted to make predictions, my guess is it should follow the model of BoTW in 2016-2017 and get a long demo at the Game Awards 2021 and a lot of gameplay on early 2022 at least. Please don't make this anniversary a half-baked effort Nintendo (not that Mario's one was) and neither forget about Metroid's anniversary
Also, the fact Nintendo had games ready but refrained to even announce them until close to release date? Please, no.
I felt so much anxiety during those empty weeks last year, I hope they don't do that ever again
Oh, I also wanted some Zelda content for New Horizons, Master Sword please hmm?
Speaking of Jeff Grubb, he claims to (maybe) not have perfect insight into Nintendo, yet he was completely right on what he said Nintendo would do in 2020.
If you ask me, he's the perfect guy to ask about those "Switch Pro" rumors.
Could those rumors, like most others, be false.
@Ludovsky I imagine it must be strategic as such, yes.
It was also disappointing as Windwaker HD and TPHD are two of only a very small number of the great WiiU games left to port to the Switch. So the money would have been on them being released later this 35th anniversary year. "Instead" we got Maiden of the Black Water as a (admittedly) nice surprise. They went for that game "strangely" for the anniversary year instead of the HD Zeldas.
I'm philosophical about it like you alongside disappointment.
They could just put Zelda 3, Mario Bros beta from 1980, Zelda OOT (at 480p) on a Flash, call it for 35th Anniversary and sell it for 60 bucks. People would be all over it.
@T317 Ah yes, it can never ben the the leakers were wrong or making **** up, it's always Nintendo's fault we didn't get what random internet peeps tell us.
99% of leakers due it purely for attention and ego. They are not doing some great public service by announcing stuff ahead of time, they are not providing Nintendo with "free advertising". It's all about feeling gratified, and they are willing to lie to do it.
Don't believe leakers, even the ones with a "100% track record."
It may be disappointing for Nintendo not to have plans for the Zelda series 35th anniversary, but I don't believe that they can celebrate EVERY anniversary all in one go. It could be too much for Nintendo to handle, we just don't know what goes behind the scenes at Nintendo.
It is so obvious why Nintendo hasn’t announced other Zelda games.
They want Skyward Sword to do well. It sold ok on the Wii but the motion only controls turned a lot of people off from that game.
Now that Skyward Sword can be played without motion controls, this is Nintendo’s chance to sell the game on switch and hope it sells well on the switch.
If a game like TP or WW or OOT or MM were to come to switch before Skyward Sword comes out, it’s really obvious which game or games people will pick up.
They don’t need to buy Skyward Sword when they can just buy like TP or WW which is better for a lot of people.
So for all those people who are complaining, be patient and wait a little bit longer. Nintendo wants Skyward to do well. We have been waiting for a new Metroid game that isn’t Metroid Prime 4 and we got Metroid Dread. We can wait on a couple of HD re releases
Time to fire Aonuma and bring back Koizumi to the helm if this is how the 35th anniversary of a series everyone loves is being handled.
@tntswitchfan68 you may be right about 3D world but we got the Super Mario 3D All Stars collection just about 2 weeks after Mario's anniversary date. Zelda's 35th anniversary date was back in February and all we have so far is just Skyward Sword and a Game and Watch. It's a good game but weak compared to how Nintendo treated Mario.
@thrashmetalcd. I guess it is just wishful thinking on my part. I will hope for a zelda collection. if we do not get one then yeah i will be disappointed. but i am crossing my fingers.
Oopsie. What a grubb........
