With an influx of incredible modern takes on classic titles such as Tetris 99, Pac-Man 99, and the short-lived Super Mario Bros. 35, Super Bomberman R Online feels like the video game equivalent of a kid picked last for the sports team; an altogether scrappier, less elegant battle royale title than its peers, but one that houses simple, compelling gameplay underneath the layers of jank. It’s not the best Bomberman game to grace Nintendo platforms, but it’s certainly worth a look.
In terms of pure gameplay, anyone familiar with Super Bomberman R, or the series in general, will feel right at home with this free-to-play battle royale spin-off which debuted on Google's Stadia last year. You play as one of several Bomberman characters (and a smattering of special characters that we'll explore in more depth later) dropped into a 11x13 gridded arena filled with an assortment of blocks. Pitted against your opponents, you must strategically drop bombs within the arena’s grid to both take out your opponents and clear pathways for better mobility.

Super Bomberman R Online amps up the classic gameplay by incorporating 16 interconnected arenas enabling a total of 64 players to take part in the action. Each match starts off in familiar territory and feels very much like classic Bomberman titles; it’s just you against three opponents in a phase known as ‘Battle Mode’. After a certain amount of time, the game shifts into the ‘Movement Phase’; here, the game forces you to vacate to a safe arena as it gradually whittles the 16 arenas into just one, where the last remaining competitors battle for victory.
Aside from the main Battle 64 mode, you can also create matches with a variety of different rules, including the number of players, time limit, number of rounds, and more. So if you wish you, can strip the game back to basics and just have a good old fashioned game of Bomberman with up to 16 players. Of course, creating these matches means waiting for players to join, which at this point in the game’s life can take a fair amount of time.
Nevertheless, the main Battle 64 mode is a genuinely fun take on the battle royale genre that’s absolutely free to play, but is massively bolstered by a selection of excellent special characters if you’re willing to punt for the Premium Pack DLC. It contains several Konami icons from the likes of Castlevania’s Richter Belmont and Alucard to Metal Gear Solid’s Naked Snake and Raiden. Each character boasts a unique ability to aid in battle, with Alucard able to transform into mist, effectively becoming temporarily invulnerable to bombs, and Snake utilising his stealth abilities to turn invisible for a short period of time.

It’s undeniable that those who own the Premium Pack DLC automatically have somewhat of an advantage over those that don’t, but Super Bomberman R Online strikes a surprisingly fair balance during gameplay, with pick ups and power ups providing base characters with ample opportunity to gain ground over the objectively superior special characters. Even the mighty Alucard would quiver in fear at the sight of six bombs sectioning off an entire corner of the arena.
So the gameplay itself is sound, and reason enough to at least download Super Bomberman R Online and see what’s what, but let’s talk about all the superfluous jank surrounding it. For starters, the game has some major teething issues at this stage of its release, with multiple short freezes occurring during matches that can often completely derail your progress. It’s an incredibly frustrating occurrence that we hope gets resolved sooner rather than later before the console player base vacates to another game.
In addition to technical issues during gameplay, it also takes an unnecessary amount of time to simply start a match in the first place. In the interest of providing accurate, scientific findings, we actually timed it from start to finish: initially, you hit the ‘Quick Match’ option, and the game takes (on average) about 40 seconds to find other players; then you have about 25 seconds to pick your character before going into another loading screen for approximately 60 seconds — just over two minutes to get into a match, then. This is of course exacerbated if you happen to be unfortunate enough to perish early on, meaning you have to go right back to the start and begin the whole rigmarole all over again. Come on now.

Super Bomberman R Online also comes with a heap of optional microtransactions and a battle pass. The battle pass is fairly standard stuff, awarding new costumes, accessories, and poses whenever you increase your rank, but the game gives you the option of purchasing the ‘gold battle pass’ for 800 Bomber Coins giving you access to multiple items instantly. It’s worth mentioning that, as you might expect, you can only purchase Bomber Coins in packs of 100, 500, 1000, and 3000, so you need to purchase 1000 Coins for the gold battle pass, leaving 200 left to gather dust unless you spend it on an individual item.
For a game so simplistic in nature (and that, ultimately, is what makes the Bomberman series so enduring), the addition of battle passes and microtransactions feels completely at odds with the rest of the experience, and it’s not something we can honestly say we’ll be taking advantage of again anytime soon. This, along with the freezing and asinine loading times, makes Super Bomberman R Online a difficult game to recommend, even if its core gameplay remains as compelling as ever.
Conclusion
Super Bomberman R Online joins many of its peers as the latest classic franchise to receive a battle royale twist. It’s not entirely successful, with technical issues including freezing during gameplay and awfully long waits to get into matches alongside a battle pass and microtransaction system that just doesn’t fit in with the nature of the game. Underneath all the added padding, however, is the same classic Bomberman gameplay that’s tweaked to fit 64 players, making it an experience that you should, at the very least, download and try out. It’s free Bomberman, after all.

I agree with the parts that are you having to pay to play with friends, and you having to pay ten bucks for all the character's, BUT the loading times and tec issues are said to be fixed in updates, and I didn't really care for the other characters as white bomber man is busted LOL,
So if you got some time I would play it, its actually really fun.
Edit: the controls can be a pain in the ass at times so I would just play with the D-Pad to be safe. And I really don't think that you not getting characters ruin anything, as I said the normal bomber man can be busted, white bomber man being S tier, trust me get to the endgame with that guy and your a God.
This is a great game ruined by MANY disastrous missteps. They probably have about a week to turn things around before the potential userbase deletes it.
I'm not optimistic.
I've been enjoying this a lot on Steam. Loading times are still problematic but the textures are way less blurry.
I think 7 would be fairer, it’s really fun once you get in a game. The load times are a joke though
Wow, 5... harsh... I really like it. Once you know what you're doing it's a blast! And very cleverly done, I love running to the different areas between rounds.
You can unlock tons of stuff without buying the premium pack... music, animations, clothes etc... the recently released Pacman 99 had NOTHING to unlock or work towards at all (hence it being my least favourite Battle Royale) and didn't seem to get such criticism.
Yes, the load times are long but they will probably patch it soon. I heard the Stadia version used to load really quickly, but since the console version came out that one loads slowly too, so seems to be a server issue.
@Broosh @Keengamer @Clyde_Radcliffe I think we all agree load times are not the best, but we still love the game, so do you guys think the score is a little unfair?
Yeah the loading times made me delete it again after two rounds or so.
A games like this has to boot quick and you need to be in a game fast.
Like Mario 35.
@Snatcher I think it's kind of unfair to mark it down for load times when it's a question of each person's patience. Mario Kart and Smash Bros take a long time to load online too. It's not unique to Bomberman.
@Snatcher I mean I would personally give it a higher score but I have a pre-existing Bomberman love as a bias. This reviewer just didn't think highly of the experience and their points are mostly valid.
Also white bomber is totally busted, but I still throw in black bomber for that sick Naruto-run 😎
Also I think it's incorrect to say "It’s undeniable that those who own the Premium Pack DLC automatically have somewhat of an advantage over those that don’t" White Bomber is actually the best character in terms of max abilities (though I seem to play best as yellow myself because he starts with all those crazy bombs)
The Switch is at fault for the loading times. Try playing this on any other platform and disable crossplay on the settings, it loads 3 times faster.
I’d give the game an 8/10, but that’s on Stadia. The game doesn’t run nearly as well on Switch or PS5. It’s clearly designed with Stadia’s interface in mind. I’d say it runs better on Switch than PS5 too. It’s a buggy mess on PS5, but Switch has the long load times.
It would be fun if people who pay for stuff didn't have such an enormous advantage.
If you play for free, it's cheaply unfair.
If you pay, you're overpowered.
@sketchturner They don't. White Bomber is the best character in terms of max abilities.
@Broosh Well this is coming from some won who used to kinda hate bomberman, I say kinda, bc I didn't really like R all that much.
@Clyde_Radcliffe well thats what I was saying I mean, White bomber is busted bc of the max he can get in endgame, Lime uses the throwing bomb strat, Black darts around the place, Red is good for getting kills early, Blue, idk what to say about him, Yellow is just fun, Pink is your normal, Blue is Just Danger at the start of the game LOL, So I would say that if you pay 10 bucks for characters its unfair, Also, We just got bean bomber, This could show that there willing to throw in some free ones as well.
Yeah. Played it a lot on Stadia when it came out. Was fun and had great load times. So I have hope, that they will get this fixed as well.
@sketchturner Not at all, All the default bomber man can be busted, in my opinion the defaults are better then the other chracters. and yes white bomber man is OP.
By Nintendo Life standards this is brutally harsh. The overall gameplay of Bomberman is (and has always been) interstellar and the implementation re making it into a battle royals works well. The wait times are annoying tho but the pay stuff is decorative and not pay to win. At least a 7
Well if were giving scores I would give it a 7, or maybe a 8.
Haven't experienced any issues besides long loading times. Those aren't a deal breaker either. I tend to be in top 10 so I'll get to play for a good while before having to find another game.
Not a fan of the pricing model. I wish you'd be able to get everything eventually without paying. I wasn't a fan of character specific abilities in R so I don't really need the extra characters and the regular characters are some of the best ones anyway.
Not sure how long I'll keep playing. I like it but it's somewhat lacking. I would like some stage gimmicks but that would probably make the game too hectic.
Wait, is “busted” a good thing now?
5? Really? It's so funny for me
I never have liked on line games. this is why. I will stick with the original bomberman R on switch. thank you very much.
I don't think scoring this a 5 is harsh at all. I tried this the day it came out and played a few games. You gotta really love playing bomberman to put up with those terrible load times. Scoring this game 'average' is exactly right. I actually love Bomberman, but I deleted this the same day I downloaded it.
I'm surprised by the review score.
I haven't actually had any freezes in my play (I do have a pseudo wired ethernet).
I bought the character pack and love the balance between most of the characters and how different some of the play (Pyramid Head kills you without bombs - just like before).
I find it way more fun that Pac-Man online and while I'd also like to see the time to start a match improved, it's interesting to me how long matches last.
In the one match I finished number 1 the time showed over 8 minutes of being alive. That is a LONG game of Bomberman (and it was fun an intense the whole time).
I'd give it a 7 and a nostalgia bump of a point to an 8 if you are already a fan of Bomberman.
Either way - you can play free and never spend and 100% enjoy the game, it's easy to recommend!
@Paperboy Well I think the issue is that Load times go from person to person, And even still they said they were going to fix it, so in a week or two this review will be outdated.
@cyrus_zuo I know, with all the stuff they give you for a Free to play game, I have yet to feel like I needed to spend money to injoy this game, and if your used to OG bomberman with no skill then its even better for you.
"It’s really not free if you want the whole experience"
What Free to Play is...?? I don't get this XD
I am loving it considering it does not cost anything. I agree the load times are a bore though!
@Snatcher that seems to be a problem that game reviewers have to deal with nowadays. If I had to review a game though, I'd review it in the state that I received/played it, what else can you do? I expect as much from the reviewer as well. Maybe it never gets fixed.
I'll stick with the original, 8/10, Switch game then?

@Paperboy You make a good point there, I I guess its not really there job to look for patch notes and stuff, But still I did fine the review to score a little unfair but thats just opinion.
@Snatcher Fair enough. I hope Konami fixes the loading times though and is able to get the word out to people. I may give it another shot if people are reporting it's sufficiently improved. Like I said, I love Bomberman 🙂
@Clyde_Radcliffe Yeah. The tagline should've been "A flawed, yet addictive experience". But that's just my opinion.
I would've got Akira (Tetris 99, Super Mario Bros. 35) to develop Super Bomberman R Online as I know they would've put so much love and care into it, and wouldn't have most of the microtransaction trappings the game has now. Knowing Konami, updates will be minimal.
@Clyde_Radcliffe OK, maybe I just don't know how to play then. I was unable to kick or throw the bombs. The people who could had the upper hand. I thought this ability was locked behind DLC but please correct me if I'm wrong.
@sketchturner Any character can kick and throw bombs, (Well not all of them depends on what character you play, but its not lock behind a pay wall) You have to find the power up, so your ether, your dying to early to get much stuff, or you did find it but you can't use it on your current character.
One thing I admit I would've liked is if they gave access to the other characters to those who already own Super Bomberman R, but I understand that goes against F2P conventions.
@sketchturner Yeah, as Snatcher said, you grab items to get those abilities... but you can also play as certain Bombers who can do some of those things from the beginning like Blue, Green or Yellow. When you select your characters you can see their default abilities.
@Clyde_Radcliffe Did you mean to reply with my name or?? Edit: Also forgot to talk about the character's who have em by default.
@Snatcher Oops, yeah I did! (Edited)
I want another Bomberman game like the Super Bomberman's or Bomberman 94' or Saturn Bomberman
A 5/10 rating….Really?
That’s incredibly harsh and if I’m honest, probably stems from the reviewers bias of it being a F2P game offering micro-transactions.
People who purchase the premium pass have no advantage whatsoever over those who don’t. It get’s you all the locked characters sure, but that doesn’t mean they’ll instantly win every game when it basically boils down to luck, skill and timing.
As others have echoed, white bomber is OP and he’s a standard character everyone can use.
As for the long loading times to find a match, I’ve not once been put off or tempted to stop playing because of it.
What’s more, the time spent waiting for a match is easily overshadowed by how long you can actually be playing in one.
I’m currently level 11 and rank 12 on both the passes, played well over 50 games and even came 2nd in one match. (Lost due to placing a bomb in the wrong spot). And all of that was with the white bomber character.
I’m in agreement that the loading times need to be improved and it seems a fix is on the way. It all comes down to an individual's patience.
The ONLY negative I have, is that creating private rooms to play with friends is locked behind the premium pass. It’s a bummer, but not a deal breaker.
The main draw to play this game is the battle royale mode anyway.
If I’m honest, the review is way too harsh. That said, the person reviewing it clearly has their own criteria and if they didn’t enjoy it that much, that’s fine.
I’m having a blast though (pun intended ;P)
NintendoLife needs to stick to what they're good at and stop reviewing games
Can you play as Yugi?
I haven't played it much myself (I'm not much of an online type of guy; I prefer local multiplayer) and while I'm not as enthused into this freemium game as a huge Bomberman fan myself, I doubt this game is anywhere near a 5/10 or lower.
That said, it would be nice if all of Online's additions (namely power ups and hearts) would make their way to the other "Super Bomberman R" released prior.
@MrGlubGlub Dude, there are some reviews from Nintendo Life I disagree with (i.e. Majin Shoujo/The Legend of Dark Witch games, Umihara Kawase Fresh!, Gensou SkyDrift, and Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded, to name a few of the bunch), but they have just as much right to review any game as any other reviewers out there.
Whoever said there are no bad opinions has never seen Nintendo Life review video games
Never had any freeing myself.
I found this really addicting. Even the f2p elements couldn't relay a fun experience.
That said, it's hard to control your Bomber when your joy-cons drift all the time...
