Nintendo Switch was the best-selling games console in the US in May, securing a 30th consecutive month (so that's two and a half years) at the top of the chart.
The news comes from NPD Group's Mat Piscatella, who confirms that Switch was "the best-selling hardware platform in both units and dollars during the month of May, as well as 2021 year-to-date." Stock issues for the PS5 and Xbox Series consoles have to be taken into account here, of course, but a 30-month streak at the top is a very strong achievement nonetheless.
The latest official global sales figures, shared by Nintendo back in May, show that Switch had sold 84.59 million units worldwide as of March 31st 2021. That number will naturally have risen quite substantially since then, moving the Switch ever closer to the Wii's mighty lifetime sales total of 101.63 million units.
Nintendo's best-selling console of all time, the Nintendo DS, ended up with a total of 154.02 million sales. Could the Switch go on to take the DS' crown?

You see, secretly, this actually means Nintendoomed.
Because success=failure in Bizzaro-Land.
and after what the e3 showed it will be the best selling system for the rest of 2021 and far beyond into 2022.
Yes a previous article hinted at a Switch slowdown because it had been outsold by the Ps5 and series X in the U.K, as I have always said the Switch will go on selling well no matter what.
Honestly at this point Nintendo doesn't HAVE to make an upgraded Nintendo Switch. Either way the Switch will sell like grandma's pies.
@Heavyarms55
I imagined those Nintendoomers are like Mr. Crocker (Fairly Odd Parents) who got isolated in isolation room and they keep saying "FAIRY GOD PARENTS !!!"....
I mean... "NINTENDO IS DEAD...!!!" 😂
That might honestly be why we haven't seen a pro version yet. The current games don't need it and sales are good enough that there's no need for a hardware refresh.
Something similar happened with GameBoy - there was a 32bit Gameboy successor developed but it was never sold because Gameboy Pocket was selling fine.
I would love to see it break that record, but 154 million is still a big ask. How many DS' had been sold at this stage of its lifecycle? Would be interested to know.
@Anti-Matter Now that's a reference I've not heard in a long time. A long long time.
And this is to no ones surprise
Switch is NOT competing against MS/Sony. It's a complimentary system that everyone loves and it has a different space in the market.
I WANT X/PS to succeed. We should be rooting for dedicated gaming systems generally. The "wars" of the 90's are long over.
Are you posting a picture of Animal Crossing to add salt to AC fans' wounds over the complete lack of mention at E3?
Well, you know what this means?
If this is possibly Nintendo's best selling console, then how about they bring F-Zero and Star Fox to Switch already. I don't want to hear anymore excuses. Make some positive noise for those franchises to come back, people.
Missing the two biggest selling third party games. 😢
Yep, demand is still strong. And after that direct paving the way will show those skeptics.
@russell-marlow I hear ya. But you know, remakes of famicom detective club which has not been here since the 80's and advanced wars from the mid 2000's. And sequels to games like Pokemon Snap and 2d Metroid. Makes me somewhat believe that F Zero, Earthbound or Star Fox could comeback.
Incredible!! Nothing will Ever beat that, nothing at all!!!
@Muddy_4_Ever
Says you. fony will always bow down to NINTENDO!!!!
Late to this article, but this HAS to mean the next console will be backwards compatible right? I mean, otherwise people will be content to just keep playing Switches all day every day. (And it’s millions of available games.)
32 Months Now! Nothing will ever break this record. It's in the History Books! I hope it reaches 35 and More!
