I so thought this was going to be Battalion Wars 3 for the Switch. I also thought the 20th Anniversary game was also going to be Pikmin 4, but it seems that's still in development even after 6 years... Needless to say it was my own fault of misinterpretation of their intros that led to my disappointment with this direct.
@nymbosox I don't believe pre-orders have actually opened up on those sites for the US. NL just mentioned the product pages have opened, and that preorders would be later. I'm sure NL will update this article once those open as well.
Definitely DWIII. I had the helper chart with all the enemies and spells and items along with the guidebook. It was all falling apart and taped up by the time I finished it, but it felt like such an accomplishment as a kid as that was the longest game I had ever played and beaten. I then went on to DWIV with no guidebook (after I understood how to play RPGs now) and then was able play the GBC DWI and II and beat that as well. I didn't really have interest in the series after beating all the NES titles, but man were they good.
Also it's odd that in one of the linked articles, the team declares the May Day event as one of their favorites, but now that it's back it's apparently not fun anymore and worth making an article complaining about its reoccurence.
I put probably 500 to 700 hours each into New Leaf and City Folk for their lifespan. And people here are complaining that they've put that much time into New Horizons IN ONE YEAR. It's these same people that are complaining there's not enough to do, even though they've gotten just as much gameplay out of what's there as I had playing several years of the older games. Would adding just a coffee shop really make you come back and play everyday for another 100 hours? I think you're just wanting another game at this point.
@Jamie_R Agreed. The first person view made it seem like you're just a camera zooming down some snow and it looked very odd. Based on the footage, I definitely like my snowboarding to be 3rd person.
Considering there are Nintendo games that are now getting 2 "remastered" versions, why not just remaster F-Zero GX? It's been almost 20 years since GX. If it takes over 20 years to think of new characters, ships, courses and story mode then give the license away.
It bothers me that it keeps being referred to "Metroid Prime 4". It was a Metroid Prime Trilogy, so 4 doesn't make sense since that would break it. Metroid Prime was just the name of the game, so why not just say new 3D Metroid game? It's not like we say "I hope there's a new super mario bros. 14 coming out!" or "maybe a new Zelda Windwaker 4". It only works with Mario party, Splatoon, Mariokart, and Pikmin (and maybe Battalion Wars someday).
@Giygas_95 I didn't even think about the pipe working inside. I think I might need to do this. I bought 4 pipes from the get go to see how they worked. I have other players on my island so I wouldn't be the only one with one. Might still be faster to enter my house even if I have to jump 2 pipes though...
@Ryan_Again If you follow the "story" line it will upgrade right after you build the 3 resident houses. It's not required to buy tons of stuff from Nook's, just keep talking to Tom Nook on "What should I do?".
Not sure how any Mario games are deemed "sequels". Just because they had a number after them didn't mean they were correlated with anything. SMB2 was a dream that the 4 of them had making it a one-off adventure. Maybe the rest is just dreams as well, but as far as SMB2 is concerned, Birdo and Shyguy aren't actually real, they were only figments of Mario's imagination. How they came to be real in actual stories is beyond me. It's been stated officially that they are all considered "actors" in the games so it's possible that beyond SMB1 all subsequent games are dreams/nightmares spinning off from the first storyline. Bowser is actually still defeated, but shows up in Mario's dreams to torment him still.
Definitely prefer NH to NL. There's so many QoL upgrades in this version it's ridiculous. Every issue I had with NL's interface or setup was solved with NH. I tried booting up my NL town last year and I just couldn't get back into it. Normal games you put in 25 or 30 hours and you've completed it. Here with Animal Crossing you have people complaining there's not enough content when I bet most have put in 400 hours+ into the game.
I'm really confused, is everyone expecting a bad score from this? It's a port of an awesome game that was released for Wii U that has MORE content. Of course it's going to get a high score.
Fingers crossed that Nintendo puts out an update for Pikmin 3 that brings Pikmin 1 and 2 as downloads with the game (even for an extra $10 as DLC I'd buy that). And if they updated those old graphics that'd be aMAZing. Also waiting for Pikmin 4....
Reminds me of the Grumble Volcano super shortcut with the 10 second lap time. Pulled it off in multiplayer quite a few times whenever it came up back in the day. I would've loved to see the players faces when all of a sudden they dropped to second with no one passing them.
The rendering doesn't look that great, or maybe it's the textures used. It looks like a bad minecraft texture mod honestly, and I'd rather not have this style. But would I love an open world Pokemon game without the typical cartoon Pokemon graphics? Of course, but just not this.
Fired up New Leaf a few weeks ago (haven't played in 5 years or so), and man I forget how odd some of the things were. I was looking for Nook's place but forgot that it doesn't exist in the game. And then came updates for camping, and a whole other place to visit (with the rebranding). Needless to say I wanted to get back into before I play NH but it was just too overwhelming to try and figure out the old stuff AND all the new updates that have came through.
I printed out a full catalog list for the last Animal Crossing games (CF, NL, GCN). I was being a completionlist and trying to collect everything. This will be handy for wondering what I have and don't have, but with this version I'm not worrying about all that bookkeeping and just trying to enjoy it.
@Silo Didn't see your post before commenting. I had the same issue. I had to double check their website for requirements and my device met all of them, but I still can't get the update.
Ugh so THAT's why I can't update Pocket Camp anymore on my device. There's another app that I couldn't update anymore with my device that uses AR camera functionality too, so I wonder if it's related. Frustrating since I was literallly just getting back into it.
Looks like I'll just be skipping over any New 3DS games sadly. Really wanted to play Hey Pikmin! (I know it's not a standard Pikmin game, but I love that genre). But I'm saving my money for a Switch, so buying another handheld for a few games seems pointless now. I understand why they dropped it.
Thought of this game the other day on gamecube and made me want to play it again. Checked into this and thought this might be fun to get but I see everything has been made so cartoony and blocky. Not to mention that walking animation is so strange. Guess I'll pass and play my old copy on gamecube if I get the itch to break it out.
Looks like I'll be getting a Switch sooner rather than later! Really wish 1 and 2 were bundled with this (and I really wish it were Pikmin 4) but I'm not complaining. But I'd be down for more DLC if they released it for this. Got all the DLC from the original and perfected every mission. Looking forward to this!
Ugh I was hoping it was a typo in the header. Pikmin 3 was FANTASTIC on the Wii U and it was THE reason to own a Wii U. I just want a Pikmin 4 ALREADY not another re-release! I hope this didn't delay the development of Pikmin 4, but if this is coming along chances are we won't see Pikmin 4 till 2021 now at the earliest
@Octane They did roll out a monthly subscription based service for it I believe last year. I think there's even 2 of them in game which is a little ludicrous. So I'm sure many probably hopped on that when it launched. Many people are also stuck at home now, and (like me) probably can't get their hands on a Switch so this suffices for now. Although I have yet to spend a penny on it and I've been playing since launch.
The best Spongebob game ever made in my opinion. I loved the gameplay and the amount of worlds to explore in this. It all went downhill after this one, but this game put THQ on the map for me. Kids nowadays probably scoff at a Spongebob game like this, but this was the heyday for Spongebob games.
This isn't news...digital games on the eShop (since the Wii) have always been more expensive than they're steam/retail counterparts. In retail, games usually will slowly drop in price over time and/or a sale can be found (like 25% off). On the eShop you're lucky to find a 3% sale for a 5 year old game. And with Steam, Steam is usually always cheaper, plus Steam always has good sales to buy from.
"Switch Tax" isn't a thing. It seems like you just now noticed there's a price difference after a decade of there always being one.
Plus, you'd think the eShop would be cheaper considering there isn't any hardware with it, but nope, it's still basically the same price as a physical version.
Wow already with a Zelda title, new Mario 3D platformer 64 style, Fire Emblem, and now Metroid Prime 4? I wonder if they new the Wii U was going to fail which is why they didn't work on these for it. They just had to bite the bullet and wait for the development of the Switch before making these AAA titles. Only things that could make this better would be a Pikmin 4 on Switch!
There are 8 bit games that are way better than the newest 4k games. I hate that they're focused more on making it realistic than making it fun and playable. Don't get me wrong, there are few and far between games that actually pull this off. But 90% of them throw in good looking textures and say done, then show off screenshots of the game which just raise hopes of the actual gameplay.
Considering this was a March release and not a holiday release (like every other console before this) and it's putting up these numbers it seems to be doing really well. Nintendo still has E3 to look forward to along with the holiday sales this year which will allow them to have bundles at that point such as 12Switch or a Zelda one. If they can iron out all the missing features by holiday season I'm sure they'll sell a lot.
All of their sports games seem to be very lackluster these days. They just strip down all of their games they've already released and then add in equestrian and call it good. They just need to put more effort in them than what they're currently doing.
Wow didn't know that was how USPS worked. "Sorry, the label fell off and even though it has your name on it, we're just going to auction it off and make some money off of it instead of giving it to you".
Seems pretty low to auction off people's items when there's clearly an identifier. Or here's an idea, keep the item for 3 months, (because by then I'm sure someone would be calling them up asking about a lost package) then give it back to someone that calls for it. First grade lost and found systems work better than this. You don't see the teacher auctioning off hats and gloves to the kids the next day after someone loses it.
@Andrzej777 Ok, I just assumed that by that comment you weren't going to play it.
I think all pay to play games are a black hole for wallets if you fall into them. All mobile games are bad investments because spending your money doesn't amount to much. You either spend it on some "life" that allows you to play another time then it's gone instantly or you constantly have to buy new small dlc that the game offers.
That's why I would buy Mario Run. I know what I'm getting instead of paying $5 for all future map packs or something.
But yes, this game has been great and is actually making me itch to play a main game now.
@Andrzej777 The neat thing is, you don't 'cause it's free.
First people complain that Super Mario Run isn't free and costs too much. Now people complain that the optional stuff in a totally free game costs too much.
I don't understand the blind packs. Collecting over 400 animal crossing cards is already overkill. It'd be different if it were 5 cards plus one blind. I think a lot more people would buy them. Amiibo cards have already gone on clearance for months now and still nobody is buying them.
I'm sure they'll have multiple series for this too as there are so many enemies, bosses, and characters to choose from. Not to mention dumb stuff like having cards for powerups, inanimate objects (? block), and spinoffs (mariokart, mariogolf).
Can't have chickens without eggs. And can't have eggs without chickens. Nintendo is the chicken and 3rd party devs being the eggs. Without 3rd parties, we would be solely playing AAA titles (which isn't bad considering Nintendo makes the best games out of everyone). But without Nintendo there would be no console for devs to make games on. They can both be successful if they work together rather than banking on one to do all the work, and piggy backing of the others success. I'm not saying it's one or the others fault, they both are fault for the Wii U. And articles like this keep spinning this falsehood that Nintendo is failing while everyone else is doing right.
The point is all are at fault here. Nintendo isn't expected to sell a console with just 3 of their games at launch. The point is to have a slew of games on board for launch which is why 3rd parties are needed. Vice versa, if Nintendo didn't make great games at launch, we would be missing those AAA titles and missing what makes this console different.
It's funny because if this came out on the 3DS eShop, everyone would be exclaiming how cheap of a Mario game it is. But since it's on a phone, people somehow think it should be free. I can understand casual people complaining about it who don't play other Mario games, but people who come to NintendoLife and other news sites shouldn't be. It's a Mario game people, not the new Candy Crush Saga Farm Deluxe Kitchen Bash. People thinking this game should be free or a $1 are ridiculous. Normally a game like this on the 3DS is $40. It's simple enough to give this a $10 price tag because it's arguably a quarter of a real game. This is still a Mario game, not a cheap mobile game. Compared to those other games, this is worth $10. So quit your complaining and go back to playing Mario on 3DS then. Or if you want a free game go and download Hamburger Rush 5: Diner Dilemma.
Lol "Personally I don't agree with paying real money for 24 virtual levels". This person obviously has never played a Mario game in their life. Although I think this is the person Nintendo is trying to get at with their games. I think there should be a free to play aspect of it (you get 1 life every 6 hours or something like most free to plays do) or you can pay the $10 to play indefinitely. While you won't make a lot of money with those free gamers who just want something free, you'll at least awaken their interest for Mario again and possibly get a future buyer. While all the gamers will pay the $10 to have the game fully unlocked. I think that would be a better interest pay to play model than the current one.
Either way, I think it's silly to down vote a game just because it wasn't free to you. It has nothing to do with the game itself, yet it looks like the game is terrible going off the ratings.
@natsuki I'm afraid goroh's comments are probably correct though. I've seen a lot of games that you can download for free (although it warns of microtransactions on the download page) and then you get to a certain point and things are locked out for you because you haven't bought the new section of the game. It's incorrect to say that people were 'fooled' into getting it.
@WiltonRoots Nintendo actually makes several consoles along with handhelds that have traditional controller buttons. They actually also just released the NES mini which has actual controllers that look and feel like a controller.
Asking for them to have a controller for a smartphone game is like complaining that your microwave can't toast bread. A toaster is something completely different than a microwave, and should not be combined. Just like smartphones and solely gaming devices.

Re: New Fire Emblem Heroes Retweet Event Offers 10,000 Hero Feathers for All
@Andrzej777 The neat thing is, you don't 'cause it's free.
First people complain that Super Mario Run isn't free and costs too much. Now people complain that the optional stuff in a totally free game costs too much.
Re: Mario Sports Superstars Is Getting Its Own Range Of amiibo Cards
I don't understand the blind packs. Collecting over 400 animal crossing cards is already overkill. It'd be different if it were 5 cards plus one blind. I think a lot more people would buy them. Amiibo cards have already gone on clearance for months now and still nobody is buying them.
I'm sure they'll have multiple series for this too as there are so many enemies, bosses, and characters to choose from. Not to mention dumb stuff like having cards for powerups, inanimate objects (? block), and spinoffs (mariokart, mariogolf).
Re: Soapbox: It's Nintendo's Job To Make Switch A Success, Not EA's, Ubisoft's Or Capcom's
Re: Rumour: More Reported Details on Ubisoft's Big Plans for the Nintendo Switch
We have 8 days...can we just wait 8 days? It could be tomorrow and these rumors would probably still be published.
Re: Newzoo Estimates Less Than Five Percent of Users Have Paid For Super Mario Run
Re: Talking Point: The Leaps and Falls of Super Mario Run's Launch
Re: Feature: An Android User's Weird Alternatives to Super Mario Run
The point of mario run is to play mario on mobile...not because we're all itching to play a running game.
Re: Super Mario Run Currently The Top Grossing iOS Store App
@natsuki I'm afraid goroh's comments are probably correct though. I've seen a lot of games that you can download for free (although it warns of microtransactions on the download page) and then you get to a certain point and things are locked out for you because you haven't bought the new section of the game. It's incorrect to say that people were 'fooled' into getting it.
Re: Super Mario Run Currently The Top Grossing iOS Store App
@WiltonRoots Nintendo actually makes several consoles along with handhelds that have traditional controller buttons. They actually also just released the NES mini which has actual controllers that look and feel like a controller.
Asking for them to have a controller for a smartphone game is like complaining that your microwave can't toast bread. A toaster is something completely different than a microwave, and should not be combined. Just like smartphones and solely gaming devices.
