It's obviously not the bestest ever, but I love it so much. It's so comfortable to hold and the AB+C design is great. I loved playing FPS games on it because you could use the C-buttons like WASD-keys and look with the analogue stick.
The only ergonomical fault with it is the hard plastic top of the analogue stick. It gets uncomfortable after an extended play and it can get slippery with sweaty hands. The other obvious shortcomings are that it renders the d-pad and L-button practically useless in most situations, and from a modern perspective the lack of a second stick.
It has been SEVEN YEARS since the last game they made came out! Or even the last project that we know for sure that they worked on came out!! The fact that they haven't been able to finish anything in all that time makes me extremely skeptical about they're abilities. Well, all we can do is hope that their next game (be it Metroid Prime 4 or something else) is just as good as all of their other games!
Reproduction boxes are fine if you like 'em, as long as they're not sold as the real deal. But in any case I don't care for them at all personally. They're not the genuine article so there's no satisfaction in displaying them on the shelf. I'd much rather have loose cartridges or discs in a generic case, than repro boxes.
Repro cartridges are a bit of a messy thing. It's just as much piracy as downloading a rom, but they're often a cheap way to play the games on original hardware if you can't get the actual cartridge. But if you're okay with pirating old games, then I'd suggest a good flash cart. With collecting repro cartridges it's the same as the boxes. There's no pride in displaying a bootleg in your collection.
@dugan #130 @Reyren #94 I have played the DLC! But I haven't finished the third and final Master Sword Trial. ;p While I feel like it wasn't really worth the price of admission (20 euros), I enjoyed the DLC for what it was.
I've been playing SNES for a change!
We had a multiplayer session in The Legend of the Mystical Ninja (the first SNES Goemon) and Donkey Kong Country, and I've been enjoying some Brain Lord (an Action RPG that shouldn't be overlooked). Oh yeah, and hopefully a good dose of Hunt: Showdown on sunday. The new update is sure to make it interesting!
That pixel art looks gorgeous! I wish more retro revivals used a high quality pixel artstyle. Actually I wish Nintendo still made games with pixel art!
It's inevitable in the case of a stronger hardware revision. There will be some Pro exclusives, while most games that run well on the Pro will be available for the old Switch but will run relatively poorly. Some games that run well on the old Switch will have some enhancements on the Pro, but most games will probably run identically on both platforms, but Pro will have more stable framerates in games that have variable framerates.
One huge concern with DLSS is that so few games actually support it as of now. It doesn't work with every game automatically and it can't be implemented by flicking a switch. The individual devs need to implement the support in their games code. This mean that even if the "Switch Pro" had DLSS, not all games would make use of it. This would especially apply to already released games. Older games would need to be patched for DLSS to work.
On the other hand if DLSS was one of the main features of the console, it could help make it an industry standard by getting all sorts of devs to implement it because it would be an easy and attractive way to make your game run better on the low power device.
A chibi style could be great for remakes of the old games, but the particular way they executed it looks ugly to me. The original DS versions actually look quite beautiful. Combining pixel art sprites with 3D environments was a good fit for the DS.
The graphics and framerate are at a rough state at the moment... :S Why can't they get help from Nintendo or even Monolith Soft on the technical side? Besides, a multi-billion company like them should have the resources to make absolute Triple-A quality.
The Lost Vikings is so good! It's a great and unique puzzle platformer that has fantastic music. The SNES version seems to be included in this package and that version has got the best renditions of the tunes in my opinion.
@BeetleSpider99 #114 To be honest, Mr Aonuma's "wording" isn't clear unless you know Japanese. I'd love to know what he actually said. The translation "we should be able to bring you some new information this year" makes it sound like they're trying to get ready to preview the game by the end of the year. But the little blurb that appears under Aonuma said "More information planned for later this year" gives a bit more hope that they actually have a plan to show it at some other specific time.
I believe him when he said that development is going smoothly but I'm afraid the scope of the project might have grown during development to a point where they needed a couple of years more and it's going to miss Christmas 2021. Or maybe they're just timing it's release to coincide with the release of the Switch Pro.
The way Aonuma said ”sorry we’re not ready to show anything, but maybe see you later in the year” and how there’s rumors about bringing all of these HD Zelda’s to the console, something about it tells me that BotW2 will miss Christmas 2021.
I kinda feel like they’re holding onto it until they can show it alongside the Switch Pro.
I'd love for Nintendo to make a beautiful pixel art game (be it Mario, Metroid etc. or a new IP), but the other wishes for this Direct are the boring and obvious but dearly needed BotW2 and Metroid Prime 4 info and Mario Kart 9 announced!
@TheRob Ah, Mario 64 might feel a bit archaic after the later games, but it's still very fun. I love how Mario controls in 64 and the music is so unique and memorable!
I’ve been playing Banjo-Tooie (finally getting into it) and Ocarina of Time (in honor of the 35th anniversary) on a quality CRT television that I got last summer. The games look good on the tube with S-video and it has been a blast! I really recommend getting a CRT if you’re at all into retro gaming. It feels so right!
Banjo-Tooie is a bit of a convoluted mess compared to the original (but not as bad as DK64), but once you get the stone rolling it’s an enjoyable adventure. Ocarina of Time still holds up very well! It’s gameplay, pacing and atmosphere still feel fresh even if it shows its age in some ways. The AWFUL framerate dips might make these games uplayable on original hardware for many people, but I can appreciate the authentic experience.
Aahhh!! Only 14/20... x) This was a fun quiz, great pics.
I fancy myself quite knowledgeable in all things Nintendo, but I messed up with #4 the D-pads (honest mistake), #8 and #16 the controller ports (I should have got these), #9 (this was a bit obscure), #17 the styluses (so many styluses...) and #15 (I really had no idea but could've guessed by way of elimination).
It definitely seems like that this will only amount to one huge open level surrounding the Goop Bowser, where you find and collect those "kitty shine sprites" in order to unlock the huge cat bell which will enable you to take on the boss. Every scene in the video shows that dark shell or the goop and you can spot the various areas in the distance in each shot. Kinda disappointing if that's the case. It looks fun but it might be over too soon.
30 fps for Animal Crossing is completely fine, but I hope that the inevitable next iteration of the Switch can run the game without slowdowns on densely decorated islands.
@Cheez ”there would have possibly been Miiverse integration and you would have also possibly seen your own Miis pop up in game”
You’re very likely correct! While I adore how the game is, I agree with you that it’s sad the original vision for the Wii U version had to be neutered in favor of the Switch. :<
Okay, I guess I have to check out the Definitive Edition of the Xenoblade Chronicles!
But I’m as surprised as anyone that Animal Crossing missed the Top 3, and that the Origami King isn’t even listed. I’ve heard a ton of great experiences from people who played it! I guess it fell off the radar for many gamers?
The Peach's Castle part of the presentation was weirding me out because it looked so much like Miyamoto was greenscreened into some 3D render of the place while other footage was clearly on site!
@Shadeon_Koopa Horace was a fun time! It's definitely not a 10/10 game, more like 8/10. Some frustrating physics and camera behavior and technical issues marred the experience. It lacks the polish of a true 10/10. But it was pretty great.
Haha, those out of bounds wall/floor clipping glitches have never happened to me, but the physics can be frustrating especially on the special courses!
Nintendo should also be sued for the sub-par antennae in the Joy-Con controllers. My friend often can't use the Joy-Con separated from the console because they keep loosing connection. I've noticed too that it depends a lot on the environment if the controllers work fine or barely at all. It's kinda sad that even holding the controller behind my leg is enough to obscure the connection.
@Dragonstar It's a matter of standards. Customers should not start to find it acceptable that Nintendo starts to loose their grip over quality control while still charging the same exorbitant prices for their products.
@Tipehtfomottob ”Maybe it's a pocket edition done in a similar style to Final Fantasy XV: Pocket Edition.”
I was half-sure and hoping they would do something like that when the game was first rumored for the Switch! It seemed ludicrous, and still seems, to try and run the same game on poor ol’ Tegra X1.
