Not much will change at Nintendo. The next 5-6 years are already on track and we know Nintendo doesn't change their plans (remember when they didn't want Skylanders as a Wii exclusive because it didn't fit their "current strategy"). Whoever is next (and it will be someone from within the company...I 100% agree with that) will be responsible for what's after NX.
Also...why do people still listen to Pachter...my god, he's the typical example of American "industry insiders" who got lucky ones and now everybody believes them because everybody believes them.
This definitely doesn't look like a "Ps2" game you guys. But I sometimes get the feeling Japanese Developers/Players don't do as much comparing as we do in the west. I played 3 Uncharted games and all of them looked better than this. A fourth one is coming out soon and it's basically a generation ahead of this. It sometimes seem to me Japanese people just don't care about these facts. That's not wrong...I actually envy them. But I live in a world we you have limited money to buy games, you compare what you get for that money and there is too much out there where I get more.
Hmmm....I'm still super undecided. I'm really glad you finally confirmed that I don't have to do what the animals say. When I heard about the game I got excited cause I never really got to design my home in the last AC (by the time I had the furniture I wanted I was sick of the game and every day I had to do 15 min of shores before being ready do design). But having no restrictions at all, I'd rather have this be a simple Home Designer (without the happiness ) for a couple of bucks in the eshop. I'm also super disappointed about the Amiibo function. The cards look awesome, but this whole photo-op thing is typical for Nintendo: It's fun to try it once or twice, have a laugh, and never ever do it again.
I hope they realise that they just can't wait til next year to give more information. This whole "We're not mentioning it by mentioning all the time that we're not mentioning it" thing is a PR disaster and leads into what will be a super disappointing reveal. JUST TELL US WHAT YOU GOT!
One of the best Kirby games imo. I completely missed it back on N64 (I cannot even remember reading about it back then!!!!) but bought it on the Wii VC and upgraded last week. Good time to play it again.
Oh man, terrible and sad news. Didn't wanna believe it when I read it earlier. While I didn't always agree with him I had a lot of respect for him. And he will always be "the kirby guy" for me and part of my childhood. In fact I'll go and play some Kirby in his honor now. Thank you Mr. Iwata.
Great great game. I recommend this so much. It'll be interesting how much it sells though. I assume most people who are actually interested have played it already. If it comes to Europe I might just give him the money to reward him for still bringing it. ^^ Can't hurt to play it again.
You have to stop using the Wii as the example. Is the same mistake Nintendo is doing and it's the one mistake that will run this company into the ground. The Wii had sooo many factors going for it and only worked at that moment in time. And even saying it worked just means "it sold consoles". Most people didn't buy many games and it died a horrible horrible death at the end of its cycle. We really need to embrace the fact that Nintendo was very lucky with the Wii and that that point in time where the could convince families to buy a console like that are gone. Gaming is mainstream now. Daddy is 40 and grew up on video games. He wants to play GTA. He buys a PS4 for the family. And the hardcore fans who are left are getting less and less. Power is not important, it's vital. Nintendo can start it's experiments if the fulfil the minimum requirements and those are set by Sony and MS (for now...mainly by Sony...). There is no more way around this.
@A01 100% agreed. I'm pretty much the same. Nintendo is really bad at reading the market. They just see "People buy Amiibos". They don't understand that it's hardcore fans and collectors who want all those characters they were never able to get before. I'm sure the AC Amiibos won't go that great. If the rumors about the StarFox Shuttle are true, I'd come back for that one for sure...
@skwaark That's exactly what happened with the Wii and that's exactly what will happen again...cause they never learn! This end of console cycle also hurts Zelda a lot more than people think, imo.
@whodatninja I had the same thought. I've been reading article after article about the NX...they should just get it over with. This will end up in another incredibly disappointing reveal.
So they'll keep on supporting WiiU and 3DS. This will be even more confusing to consumers. And also: Iwata always talks as if there is no overlap. One group of people own a Wii, another 3DS and a third one is going to buy NX. I think Nintendo still doesn't realise how much trust they expect from their community to buy all these consoles and console upgrades every couple of years. If the NX concept is nothing worldchanging (Spoiler: It won't be.) the release will be an even bigger flop than WiiU. I wrestled with buying a WiiU day 1 and I'm a hardcore fan...I sure won't buy this thing day 1 if it isn't a powerhouse and runs on gimmicks. EVEN IF THERE'S METROID!
Sounds like they generally go with F2P which is too bad. Still waiting to for that one F2P game that convinces me of the model. I thought Pokemon Shuffle was it but I stopped that one because it became pay 2 win, as well.
Cool. I like the trust in the community.l...I don't think it'll last and they'll update eventually but for now it's awesome they give the community the chance to prove itself.
I don't care about the post limit. I'd actually be happy if that was a propblem but people don't use Miiverse that much. I love Miiverse and wish they would but sadly Nintendo is not making it attractive enough. I really like the play journal idea but using it to replace the feed...uuuurgggg
@Platypus101 Many have played this game. There are previews. The interviewer played it. I have a couple of friends who went to an event where they played it. Every one of them couldn't enjoy the game cause of the controls. I don't understand Miyamoto's statement. It can be fun taking your time mastering a game, but mastering controls is never fun.
Even with the more positive writeup the control sound like the make no sense. I already scratched my head when Miyamoto talked about how great the second analogue stick is and then suddenly talked about using it for mapping buttons to it. It seems so counter-intuitive. I guess with this one I just have to wait until GamesCom and see myself.
@Project_Dolphin Ok, I didn't know about the dynamic part. You are partially right I think of them as unsuccessful. Mainly in the sense, that they aren't lasting. Gimmicks to me are something that you do once, you think it's cool, and as soon as the novelty wears off you move on. That's why I said the loading free open world is not a gimmick. Future games will try to have that too. The only gimmick I can think of that has become a standard is the rumble pack. And that's only because it doesn't bother people (I actually know some people it dies bother). So yeah, part of my definition of the word "gimmick" is that it doesn't push the game forward but gives them smth that's cool for a while and then wears off.
@Project_Dolphin No they are not gimmicks. No loading screens is an evolution for the open world genre that games after it will adept. Day and Night cycle is nothing new (Ocarina of time?!) but if well done can bring more variety to the game. Remember when the that one game (can't remember the name) for the GBA had a day/night cycle that was activated by a light sensor?! That was a gimmick! You only got certain things when you actually play at the right time, it didn't always work right and the whole game design was based on this concept working (which it didn't). That's a gimmick. Again: New gameplay elements are not the same. The transforming in StarFox Zero is not a Gimmick, the shooting through the gamepad is. From all I hear it's unnecessary complicated and takes you out off the game rhythm. It's just there to do something...anything with the gamepad so we use that gamepad. Because Miyamoto doesn't understand that the "newness" wears off after 5 minutes. It's not there because someone thought it makes the game better.
@Project_Dolphin No it's not. That's exactly the point. Look at Horizon: Zero Dawn. This doesn't look like there is some Gimmick to the gameplay and it still feels totally fresh. I'm not saying you can't have new gameplay elements but that's not what Nintendo is about anymore. Mario Sunshine had a new Gameplay Element. That's different than a tacked on Gimmick...
@Yorumi Yeah, I totally feel you. They can't get off the idea that it's "fun" to have all those experiments that kinda work but not really. To me Nintendo has recently felt like those directors who talk about 3D in movies all the time. "We want to bring the audiences into the movie...they have to be sucked in!!" Yeah, you know what. Make a movie that sucks me in with its story and characters and THEN we can talk about adding gimmicks. Same with Nintendo. Do the basics right and then maybe add your stuff...but Star Fox shows again that the gimmick is front and center...
@Yorumi I feel the same about Nintendo's Gimmicks. They wear off so so quickly. If you look at any of their recent consoles, the games we remember fondly are not the gimmicky ones. For the great stuff on 3DS you don't need 3D (or even the touchscreen in most cases), for the great stuff on WiiU you don't need the Gamepad and I actually think Mario Galaxy would have been even better with a normal controller. I disagree with the tablets stealing the WiiUs thunder being BS though. It was my first though when they announced the concept at E3 a couple of years ago. "Your're 3 years late, Nintendo". In 2007 this would have been amazing to customers. The gimmick still would have worn off quickly but way more people would have bought it.
So Mario Maker might my the biggest "Must Have" for me in a decade or so. It really looks like they are doing everything right with this game and like it's super easy to use, which is usually the reason I don't actually end up making levels (Little Big Planet I gave up on after 10 min).
Star Fox I hope will be more arcady then the previews sound like and Yoshi I got already preordered and paid.
@Peach64 I thought the same thing. It doesn't sound like a good idea to me but it sounds more and more plausible cause their handheld is due for a real update pretty soon.
But just like many people will wonder: What is Retro doing then????
Oh and just to add this: The game looks alright. I'm not that interested because I think they are waaaay overdoing it with their coop stuff and I also think the ball game should be an eshop download, but the problem is the attitude of making this Metroid instead of delivering on well....Metroid. ^^
Calling criticism "entitlement" has become a trend on the internet. "Stop wanting things and be happy this company is making games". The anger over this game is 100% understandable. Nintendo has been ignoring their fans wishes for quite a while now and the gap of 6 years in the Metroid franchise is giant and the last game was not that well received (I personally found it unplayable as a lefty). And then you show this. So the anger comes from a place that logically there are only two possibilities: a) This is just a "Here, take this and shut the F up!" kind of situation or b) (More realistic) Nintendo just doesn't care or understand... Iwata's reaction proofs that further. There was nothing wrong about the direct itself...it was actually really fun and charming. The content is the problem. And the question is not "How do you do a better presentation?" but "How do you bring better content?"
@NotEnoughGolds The problem is that from the way Nintendo is working right now the new Zelda will be filled with Gamepad Gimmicks. And I'm sure the NX will have a big Gimmick like the gamepad too (if the NX isn't a handheld anyway). This means they can't just port it over...
@BinaryFragger Yeah, someone mentioned earlier that it's the same for wooly world. In theory that's fine with me, if you have a 90 minute press conference in which you show games that are close as well as new stuff.
"Yes, we have some great footage but impressing the audience and keeping people interested in our products is not our current strategy. Right now we are focusing on letting the WiiU die and showing Zelda off when everybody has moved on already. Please understand."
Fir me that's basically Mario Maker, Star Fox and Zelda on Wii U in the span of the next 9 months IF Zelda comes out in Q1! And honestly...after that I don't expect them to bring much more to the WiiU. And what's with all those coop games on 3DS??? The one game where that would be interesting is StarFox but no that one of course won't have multiplayer. Uuurrrgg... It's finally time to save up for that PS4.
Not really disappointment since I didn't expect much this year...but boy the Wii U is dead. Didn't expect that. I'm sure Star Fox will be great but they are really not trying to sell anymore consoles. Basically just giving owners one more game every 3 months and that's it...
Nintendo knocked this one out of the freaking park. Most fun I hat watching E3 in years....maybe ever. Only downside was that hungrybox douchebag who just couldn't stop embarrassing himself. But that's not Nintendo's fault. Soooo well done. And now my hypelevel for Mario Maker is through the roof.
