Ever since The Legend of Zelda on Wii U was delayed into 2016 there's been concern that it would fall far enough down Nintendo's schedule to become a title on the company's next 'NX' hardware. This hasn't always seemed to be an overly accurate assumption, as the NX won't even be revealed until 2016, with no release window clear as yet.
Shigeru Miyamoto, talking to IGN, has reiterated that the next home console entry in the iconic series is still coming to the Wii U, re-assuring those concerned that it'll skip to the next generation.
We're here to talk about Star Fox but Zelda is still coming to Wii U, so don't worry about that.
My thing with E3 is that we always focus on what's coming out in the immediate future. We have some really great Zelda footage and, at some point we will be showing that off, but not today.
Does this provide the reassurance you want regarding The Legend of Zelda on Wii U?

How to make a Nintendo doom comment ''Nintendo failed us, I hate them, gonna sell my Wii U now , last console i will ever buy from them'' later Zelda Wii U gets released and more pokemon games ''oh a new zelda and pokemon, Nintendo i love youu'' You people say TP was ported to wii, im not seeing Skyward Sword ported to Wii U
Damage control. It's not going to work.
Suuuuuuure it is. *wink
Wow, seriously. Why not show the footage at E3, come on Nintendo.
To be honest, I was really hoping they would save it for the NX, especially after what happened at this E3.
Didn't Twilight Princess come out on the GC and Wii? All he is saying is that it will be on the Wii U. That doesn't mean it will not also be on the NX.
It would make sense as plenty of resources has already been put into the Wii U game.
"We have some really great Zelda footage"
I guess they had to cut it to make time for the Skylanders amiibo.
If only this footage was shown at the Digital Event. THAT would have made the show. But no. We get mediocre titles with some actually great looking titles like Mario and Luigi and Star Fox. I enjoyed it, but Zelda Wii U footage would have made the show entirely!
This is no suprise. There would be uproar from Wii U owners if this game skipped the Wii U.
Whether or not Zelda U will also be on the NX, I believe it will be the Full Stop of Nintendo's games for the Wii U. if you released it and then had another year of games, you would have to find a similar if not greater level of game to follow it.
"Be happy"
I think I may physically be unable to do this at the moment.
@97alexk You forgot "Nintendooooooooooooomed"... But that reminds me, I still need to finish Skyward Sword
I've never thought it would for even a second. They're not going to delay the game until holiday 2017, which is the absolute earliest NX will come out.
Nintendo's logic at it's finest. We have it, but we want you to be focused on starfox. Nintendo, that's not how E3 works mate.
And as a launch title for the NX calling it now.
Not worried. They said a while back that Zelda wasn't going to be at e3. Everybody knows it is next year's holiday title. After the FExSMT wait I like Nintendo's new approach of waiting until stuff is at least a year out before showing.
@whodatninja lol yes forgot about that. Also you need to finish skyward sword, amazing game
I'd it still comes to wii u I guarantee you we'll have a twilight princess scenario and see it developed on NX also. It makes perfect business sense tonnage a game this anticipated available on a console you are trying tonnage a strong launch for and also explains the huge delay
Wii U and NX yeah. not just Wii U.
They could have AT LEAST shown another teaser!! Or a name reveal. Or a couple of screenshots. Or....just ANYTHING!!! Man...what a bummer...
think they need to reference an nintendo direct for the games of 2016. about november time and deliver dates for the first half of the year and tease stuff of after.
They usually do it but after the lackluster E3 showing reminding people would be an idea
"Not today", eh? What about tomorrow, then? Cause you need it, man. Badly. And I say that with all the love possible.
What would have reassured us is a new trailer with a release date at the end with 2015 in it. I am 100% certain NX will launch November 2016 with the new Zelda on it.
If they launch a new console, it simply cannot fail, and Zelda is the only way they can be sure to do well. Wii U didn't have one, and didn't get that initial sales momentum. 3DS didn't either until Ocarina came out. The game may appear for Wii U after NX, or in parallel.
Yes the e3 presentation was soooo incredibly amazing even without it, so they were totally right not to show it.
Might not be a fall release, but no way they can hang in for another 2 years with the Wii U. Spring '17 then. Latest.
@97alexk I like what I've seen so far: Groose, Zelda, the artstyle, the music, the motion controls are fun... Fi is annoying, but otherwise I don't get the hate!
I can wait a while for the next Zelda, considering I still own a couple i need to finish.
Ok if they have "some really great Zelda footage" they need to show it. Why say that at all?
I don't understand.
Showing "games that are coming out in the immediate future" is the reason why they have absolutely nothing to showcase.
They are supporting the wii u almost entirely by themselves and if they continue stretching their titles thin across the year to stem the drought, the next E3 will be as lackluster as this one in titles.
Maybe 1 new zelda plus some forgettable titles just like this one in 2016 or something.
E3 is meant to hype the fans up.
Show them what the future of gaming holds.
Not showing them what is coming up JUST for this and next year.
@whodatninja Don;t believe the controls hate. People just don't know how to use the motion plus. I never had any problems with the controls in that game. HOWEVER, you will want to kill Fi 20hrs in. Every time you start the game she will remind you what a rupee is and what each and every item does.
Swordplay is friggin fantastic in that game.
But not as an exclusive if the NX is actually its successor. Which means it's too late, like TP was to the GC and Skyward was to the Wii.
They never learn.
Unfortunately some mediocre games are coming out before then according to this years Nintendo E3 (Mario Maker, Wooly World, and StarFox excluded)
I feel so underwhelmed at the moment. I was really hoping for some kind of surprise.
It's coming to Wii U the way Twilight Princess came to GameCube. It'll be ported to NX for launch. Mark it down.
It's coming to the Wii U but we have transformed it into an Amiibo driven board game. Please understand.
@rjejr
Lol
People NX isn't even going to be shown fully until next year. That doesn't mean it's coming out next year. Zelda is not going to be a NX title. It's a Wii U title. I'm not happy with the digital event either, not because of what is announced but because of what wasn't. I really wanted some new colours for the New 3DS XL or the smaller New 3DS. But I am over it. I am going to buy the games I want and just let the rest you do your own thing.
I don't think they can afford to keep zelda till next holiday season look at the difference in sales between skyward sword and twilight princess.all the people waiting for this will have got fed up with the drought by then at least the wii had a steady stream of games for a few years at first.
If Zelda will be on both Wii U and NX, that's a horrible, pathetic excuse of a launch title. Cross-gen games are always horrible excuses of launch titles. If Zelda is on both systems, then it is not a reason to pick up an NX, regardless of whether you own a Wii U or not.
The NX needs exclusive titles, not cross-gen games or remasters of last-gen games (which the other companies are highly guilty of). Zelda U needs to be an NX exclusive for it to matter for the NX. Problem is, that will piss Wii U owners off.
I don't get why people are defending the idea of Zelda being a cross-gen game. That's not okay.
@KillScottKill I really hope it does. The NX HAS to hit the ground running if Nintendo wants to have a chance, as small as that chance may be at this point, at competing with the PS4 and XBOX One.
If the NX and their QOL device became one in the same and caused a Wii-like movement I'd be impressed, but that's my imagination running wild. Nintendo needs to focus on giving the Wii U and 3DS proper send offs and the NX a proper introduction.
@Pokefanmum82 November 2016: NX hits shelves. Mark it down.
Notice how Nintendo didn't really announce a single major Wii U project?
@KillScottKill That doesn't mean they'll have anything noteworthy for a 2016 launch of the NX.
@IceClimbers The Wii had Twilight Princess and did fine. The NX will have this.
@KillScottKill Twilight Princess is not why the Wii did well. The Wii did well because of the fad of Wii Sports and the Wiimote. Zelda U as a cross platform title isn't a reason to pick up an NX. It's a pathetic excuse of a launch title no matter how people want to spin it.
@OneBagTravel You spelled included wrong... jk. The only games I want from Nintendo this year are Devil's Third, Xenoblade Chronicles X, and Fatal Frame, though. I was really hoping Starfox would be a fusion of Starfox and Starfox Adventures, but I guess my hopes were a little too high.
@IceClimbers I don't think it's a poor launch title or the reason for the Wii's success, but it will help to have something to play at launch along with the exclusives we know will be there. I think a lot more people would have liked to have quite a few Upgraded Wii games as launch titles for the Wii U. Xenoblade, The Last Story, Skyward Sword, etc. Cross generation games aren't bad, they can even trump backwards compatibility in some cases, imo.
"Don't Worry, The Legend of Zelda is Still Coming to Wii U"
For now! And seeing as Triforce heroes looks like a social game, I wouldn't be surprised if they also do something very strange with the upcoming console Zelda. Something that may totally piss us off!
Wasn't worried. Can't believe anyone would think Zelda would abandon Wii U to go on NX.
It won't be an NX launch title. If anything, they will release it as a remaster 6-12 months after the NX is released, like Sony did with The Last of US.
"Yes, we have some great footage but impressing the audience and keeping people interested in our products is not our current strategy. Right now we are focusing on letting the WiiU die and showing Zelda off when everybody has moved on already. Please understand."
They said before e3 we wouldn't see it, so why is this a shock? I bet with all the directs they have, well see some more around the fall or near Xmas time. I don't think they will have it also on the NX, yes they are revealing it next year, but that means that it won't release till probably 2017, so why do ppl think out will be on that?
Maybe the Wii U isn't doing the greatest, but Nintendo is at least trying to bring some great games... geesh, they even brought star Fox back, and ppl still have complaints!
That almost sounds like they are going to show some this E3 week. If they were on the fence and waiting to see how things went... I'd say they'll be showing it off.
@rjejr
So, what's wrong with those skylander amiibos? Get one toy and it works with many Amiibo games and Skylander. It's a good deal.
@BinaryFragger Yeah, someone mentioned earlier that it's the same for wooly world. In theory that's fine with me, if you have a 90 minute press conference in which you show games that are close as well as new stuff.
I wasn't shocked that the new Zelda wasn't at e3, because they mentioned it wasn't ready as others stated. So I know they weren't trying to get anyone hopes on that issue. Though the real problem is where are the other games at? While I will probably get Starfox (for the right price), the only other game that showed promise was Xenoblade, which is already released in Japan and we knew all about it. I thought there would be something up there sleave that was relevant. What happened to some other titles like Project Robot from last year. Like I said, Where is the other "wow" games?
What is Nintendo going to announce at E3 2016? Mario Maker, Star Fox, Wooly World for the 4th time?
I have problems with a lot of the "time" comments, because a lot of people was dissapointed with Sony and Microsoft presentation because most of there games were not for this year, but nintendo do something bad in the moment they talk almost only of games that are going to be out this year... so what is the problem??
@IceClimbers lmao @ this. How many people cared that TP was being released on GameCube? No one. Absolutely no one. That's why no one freaking bought that version and goes for a ton of money now. I never said TP was why the Wii did well, but the game still sold because it was a freaking Zelda game apart of the launch of new Nintendo console.
Insinuating that any major Legend of Zelda title is a bad launch title is ridiculous. Zelda moves consoles. Zelda and Mario. Part of the Wii U's struggles (certainly not all) can be traced to the fact that there isn't a dedicated Zelda title on it after nearly three years.
@BinaryFragger THANK YOU. And this - my friends - is my evidence that the Wii U is dead, NX is next year, and Zelda is going to be a cross generational release. A game being a year or more out has not stopped Nintendo from showcasing it in the past two years at E3.
If there were ever a day when that footage needed to show up.....
They're pulling a Twilight Princess. It'll be an NX launch title.
But dozens of people on the internet said that the game is skipping the WiiU, they can't all be wrong.[/sarcasm]
Well, they stated pretty clearly Zelda U is not gonna be shown at this year's E3. At least they keep their promises, I guess!
Some real delusional people around these days. If you can't see that the wii u is dead and Nintendo have moved resources to the NX your blind. NX will come out next year with new Zelda.
Hey maybe Dragon Quest X will make it to the NX as well.
People are just so damn impatient these days, it doesn't matter if all the games in the world were shown, people would still complain about something. I own more than 10 must have gorgeous games on the WiiU and I plan to own more, as far as I am concerned Nintendo has done a very good job of supporting the WiiU and I feel I have already gotten my moneys worth. I still have Xeno to look forward to, I still have Mario Maker and Devils Third and a couple 3DS games as well. Sounds good to me.
Haha!!! love it!! Nintendo Life is damage control...but, why?
The Legend of Zelda IS coming friends...just to a console platform that has less peasantry than yours.. Oh Snap.
@BinaryFragger Apparently @KillScottKill is putting words in your mouth.
@PearShapedEgg Uh...your post is full of fail, Nintendolife is in no way associated with Nintendo and your comment about peasantry makes you sound like you're some sort of elitist snob...please forgive me if my comment seems a little harsh @AntDickens and @TingLz, but his comment was very rude to both your staff, and the rest of us "peasants"
Peasantry means a person of poor class or unprivileged in British English as well does it not?
@Thomas Whitehead :Shigeru Miyamoto, talking to IGN, has reiterated that the next home console entry in the iconic series is still coming to the Wii U, re-assuring those concerned that it'll NOT skip to the next generation
@Neko_Rukiafan
Hey man! Sorry that offend... Nothing personal intended! I LOVE Nintendo, and this site is also really awesome!!
Just being stupid, sarcastic and opportunistic...I mean, a few of us aren't happy about what transpired earlier and that's basically IT. I am quite 'poor', so please don't take the 'peasantry' comment personally..
Life goes on, right??
No need to make this article, honestly. This simple fact will truly fly over people's heads.
"we always focus on what's coming out in the immediate future"
So why did they show Zelda last year? Why was Xenoblade shown off 2 years ago? This is a load of bull...
Perhaps and only perhaps this will be a cross-release like Twilight Princess.
@VanillaLake I can definitely see that happening and I wonder if that has something to do with Nintendo delaying it...?
@datamonkey Yep, it looks like Twilight Princess again, which is not necessarily a bad thing.
@aaronsullivan - "So, what's wrong with those skylander amiibos? Get one toy and it works with many Amiibo games and Skylander. It's a good deal."
Oh, it's a great deal, they may be the only amiibo I ever pre-order. I may even buy both the Wii U and Wii version of Skyalndes Superchargers to get them (Amazon will have them both 1//2 price Black Friday I'm sure).
But - and deja vu I already must have answered this elsewhere, but maybe not to you - it looks to me like Nintendo made amiibo, realized they didn't know how to make a proper amiibo game, so let Activision put them in theirs.
Go watch the vids I linked to in th eother thread, Bowser and DK look FREAKIN AWESOME - in 3D smashing stuff. And those are some real Wii U graphics, just look at those flying segments. I know Starfox can't do those - Activision cheats - fixed camera - but they do look oh so pretty And those clouds. I never ever thought I would care how clouds look in a videogame.
ahem, on topic. Nintendos E3 NDE needed to show more of Nitnedo's games, Skyalnders licensed amiibo should not have been the highlight. That Reggie talk should have been a Treehouse moment, not in the NDE. Same for all the other talking heads. Muppets were great, but the yarn lady had too much screen time. Well at least they didn't have Pele`. (I grew up in NYC in the 70's, I highly admire Pele, he's Pele, but that EA interview was a really bad idea.)
@BinaryFragger Games get delayed and with a game the size and scope of Xenoblade Chronicles X does that surprise you?
@rjejr I wish they would do something like that with the Amiibo, in fact that was what I thought they were going to do. Then it shifted to thinking that they would let you create a virtual AI to co-op or compete with in their games. Then I saw the outfits for Mario Kart 8 and realized there was so much potential left on the table...
@rjejr
I looked at it differently. Nintendo needs more 3rd party love and the Toys 2 life games and Just Dance are all they really have besides direct (paid) partnerships on their games. I guess there was Yokai Watch as well but the more third party love the better. Plus, it was exclusive to the Wii U. Wii U exclusives are also important for obvious reasons.
I think the Digital Event was just riddled with problems. I wasn't so down on the yarn lady except that we had a similar digital event and story 1 year ago and the game is on the verge of release outside the US. Plus, we have seen a ton from that game. All good, mind you.
For that particular event, Nintendo needed to focus on NEW and even far future things. In context with the Championship which I think was much more successful and the SSB info which was mixed, but RYU does bring street cred (ahem). Treehouse smoothing off some edges. It would be an okay E3.
The Animal Crossing and "Metroid" stuff was just so primed (ahem) for huge negativity.
Still time to save E3 for Nintendo though.
Please save it for the NX.
PLEASE.
Do not make it a swan song for a failed system, make it an amazing launch title for your next system.
You know a surefire way to make your next system a failure as well? Wait 4 years to put out a Zelda game.
@Darknyht - "create a virtual AI to co-op or compete with in their games."
In Yoshi's Wooly World player 1 gets to use an amiibo as a helper Yoshi. I'm not exactly sur ei fthat includes the 2 already released from SSB and SMB or just the new yarn ones, but it's the 1 game where you do get to play alongside an amiibo. Much better than their usage in Captain Toad, which I never even bothered w/, not even sure which amiibo work w/ that game, we only own 5. And no Yoshi. We'll just play Yoshi in co-op all the time, who doens't love Yoshi?
@aaronsullivan - "Still time to save E3 for Nintendo though."
No, no there isn't. There isn't enough time in the world.
Well unless they announce dual Gamepad support for Starfox, but that's it.
I will add this though, 3DS doesn't need saving as much as Wii U. I think both Paper Jam and FE:Fates looked great, plus multiplayer Metroid and Zelda at least have street recognition. But as soon as Reggie opened his mouth and said "NX", it was over for Wii U - for all time. Maybe if Starfox looked like SW:Battlefont and had online multiplayer (is there really even a reason to make a spaceship dog fighting game w/o a vs online component? I feel like I was playing those things on PC back in the 90's) or if he followed that name dropping up w/ Zelda U, or Super Mario Universe (we really don't need Galaxy 3, I want Universe). But I guess that will be on NX as well. Nintendo will manage though, too many IP not too, and a stranglehold on handhelds, I doubt there will ever be a Vita 2. But I'm not buying an NX, I'll need to purchase a PS5 for the FFVII remake. (Probably KH3 as well.)
@NotEnoughGolds The problem is that from the way Nintendo is working right now the new Zelda will be filled with Gamepad Gimmicks. And I'm sure the NX will have a big Gimmick like the gamepad too (if the NX isn't a handheld anyway). This means they can't just port it over...
@aaronsullivan - "The Animal Crossing and "Metroid" stuff was just so primed (ahem) for huge negativity"
Puns aside, Nintnedo really needs to consider investing in some focus groups, both for it's game making decisions and NDE presentations. Not me, I'm too critical and negative, but even Jax said it was lame and he loves everything. And not a fanboy or yes man either. I don't think Thomas Whitehead has written a reaction piece yet but he's a well spoken and well educated individual, they could have asked him. Not about the game choices I guess, but the NDE needing a prescreening.
@rjejr
So, is everyone convinced the NX is a Wii U replacement? I haven't been, but I'm being swayed by this E3.
I do think Star Fox fans will come around. Just not sure how many there are.
If NX isn't going to replace Wii U, then we need another new future looking Wii U game tease before E3 is out. Still holding out some hope for that, but not much.
I'm 80% sure this E3 week won't end without some sort of a sneak peak at Zelda for Wii U.
This game is the Skyward Sword of Wii U: likely one of the last great releases of this console generation. It won't be pushed out to the NX unless it's as a "port" like the Wii games that have come to Wii U VC.
@aaronsullivan - "So, is everyone convinced the NX is a Wii U replacement? I haven't been, but I'm being swayed by this E3."
Well, technically I still think it's a replacement for both Wii U and 3DS, which is why they couldn't show it this year b/c "new" 3DS just came out. A Wii U w/ a portable Gamepad. How hard could that be? Sega tried it w/ the Dreamcast 15 years ago (VMU Chao adventure), tech has advanced a lot since then. Portable Gmaepad woudln't even need a game slot - just internal memory - DL or buy the game on disc, transfer the low res stereo sound version to your Gamepad. (A lot of those 50GB PS4 games are made up of 51. sound files). Sync up when you get home. And in case you are wondering about the dual screen situation, Nitnedo already figured that out last year w/ the 1 screen 2DS. So w/ NX use the whole screen w/ your tv, or split it in half for off tv play. I'm guessing the Gamepad will be vertical like the 2DS rather than horizontal.
That's my thoughts anyway, Ninteod just can't keep trying to make both handhelds and home console games, so just make a home console version and down res it for portables.
But yeah, NX looks like a home console Wii U replacement regardless.
@Hotfusion I never did really think of that .-. But I would probably still get it on Wii U for the probably lower price.
@whodatninja good luck with the last silent realm
