Re: PSA: Remember To Update Your Joy-Con, As Well As Your Nintendo Switch

Link506

@nessisonett Ah, another dev in the comment section I see. This stuff must be so easy for you.

Seriously though, why do computers need BIOS updates? To add in security patches, optimize low level code, fix bugs. The joycons are just like any other firmware or microcontroller (think Arduino) out there. They need updates for all of this

Re: These Custom Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Tracks Have Us Dreaming Of A Future Track Creator

Link506

A bit meta, and it's kind of a rant, but I have to say it:

I love this community, but it does seem to have a short term memory when it comes to the hacking scene. We pan the idea of hacking the switch and it's games, but absolutely love this stuff? I love these mods as much as the next guy, (and a few of us here) understand that not all hackers have nafarious intentions. In fact, few do. The overlap of pirates and hackers is actually few, and some hackers even go out of their way to make it DIFFICULT to pirate games.

Many hackers work with or are modders themselves. They love Nintendo games, and they only want to make the experience better for everyone. Let's just not jump on everyone who knows how to run unsigned code.

Re: Feature: SNES Classic Edition Vs. PlayStation Classic - Which One Should You Choose?

Link506

@ThanosReXXX I'm not sure. In the world of open-source software , there's such things as "forks". You take a piece of open-source software and you tweak it to your design. The default emulator used in RetroPie(lr-PCXS-rearmed) is a forked version of PCXS-rearmed. (and PCXS-rearmed is a forked version of PCXS).

This is what I think might be the case: lr-PCXS-rearmed might be better optimized as it's completely open-source compared to PCXS-rearmed and better maintained (lr stands for Libre-retro). That and I don't think Sony forked their own version of PCXS-REARMED to try and optimize it for their own hardware.

All-in all, I just hate how this makes open-source software like PCXS-rearmed and its forks look bad. It's not that they're bad, they 've just been set up improperly. I honestly can't wait until the hacking scene gets a good crack at this one - - I really think they can push this to play even more demanding titles than even PS1 games. I mean, heck, this thing is even used in low-end tablets.

Re: Feature: SNES Classic Edition Vs. PlayStation Classic - Which One Should You Choose?

Link506

@ThanosReXXX While I'm not sure exactly what Sony did to make the PS classic run as poorly as it does, I do know that most PS1 games on a raspberry pi 3 with Retropie run pretty much flawlessly. And the Pi3's A53 Broadcom processor is considerably weaker than the mediatek processor in the PS classic. (That's using the "lr-pcsx-rearmed" emulator, which iirc, the PS classic uses straight "pcsx-rearmed" (which the pi supports too)).

It's a real shame, considering the PS classic would have been a great device for those who don't want to mess with the configuration of a raspberry pi, and just want to relive their some memories from the past.

Re: Guide: The Best Pokémon Games - Every Mainline Pokémon Game Ranked

Link506

@Aloy Really? I loved the pixel art style of B/W. The Pokemon on screen had so much charm to their animations, yet still were reflective of the sprites which they came from. I wouldn't mind seeing this style return in a spin-off title or something. Now, if you argued that the story/pacing was bad, I'd wholeheartedly agree with you.

Re: Soapbox: Nintendo's Maddening Stance On Retro Gaming Is Driving Me To Piracy

Link506

Normally, I'm on board with the idea of "owning" rather than "renting" or subscribing to a service. I'd rather own my own books, movies, music, video games, etc. But when it's a digital game which I'll probably play once, then never again, I'm fine with a subscription based service. I just want to play Super Metroid on my Switch. That's all. But until then, Yo-Ho, me laddies!

Re: Nintendo Files Patent For Game Boy Case Compatible With Touch Screen Devices

Link506

@Uncensored That would mean the joycons would need to connect perfectly with your phone via Bluetooth. And so far, that's very much a hit or miss feature at this point in time, with some handsets not working, others working perfectly, and most working but have an incredible amount of lag that it's pointless. I do wish it was a viable possibility though.

Re: Hackers Have Now Found A Way To Emulate Nintendo 64 Games On Switch

Link506

@yuwarite First off, the Tegra X1 CAN in fact play almost all wii and gamecube games. Just look at mario galaxy or twilight princess playing on a Chinese Nvidia (shield.https://youtu.be/JMQWcl_99fs) The reason why the shield has trouble keeping up is because android just isn't made to be a console os. It needs to be streamlined more if it were to work.
It is true that it wouldn't make much sense for hackers to turn the switch into a "modern psp". However, the switch does have something which nothing else has--quality physical buttons with a portable factoe. A modern budget phone doesn't have this unless you lug a controller and kickstand around and at that point, it's not a handheld anymore. A PC is great for emulation, but it too is tied to a wall, wither that be a tower or laptop-- and again, it's not a handheld. The only device I can think that fits all these categories that isn't the switch is the GPD and gpd win- two relatively expensive devices. That's why for some, hacking their switch just makes sense. This is absolutely not the case for most, but the VC was something that everyone came to expect and take for granted and I know some which bought a switch for the VC and it just doesn't seem right that the Switch misses out on something even the failed Wii U had.

Re: US Research Analyst Believes Gaming Could Become 100% Digital By 2022

Link506

Absolutely no way. Pc gaming and mobile gaming is already 100% digital, but console gaming isn't. I could see Microsoft going all digital by 2022, as they are really pushing the Xbox to be a windows 10 box for your TV (See the recent news of adding mouse and keyboard support for Xbox one). But Sony is less likely to do it unless they release a new console between now and then. And I certainly cannot see Nintendo moving to all digital now that the Switch had proven to be such a big success and lot of their revenue comes from physical releases. Why do you think indie developers on switch say that they are always hopeful for a physical release on switch? It's because games sell really well when people see them on store shelves

Re: Reaction: What are Your Thoughts on Nintendo Switch Online?

Link506

I really hope we start seeing some more good online games to make up for this. Back on the old Wii U the only game I ever felt like playing Online was Mario Kart 8. And even then, I would only play every month or so.

I also really hoped that SNES game would make the cut. NES games were good back in their prime, but few feel as polished as the SNES' library was. I have never really gotten into Super Metroid and was waiting until the release of it on Switch so I could play it on the go.

Re: Hackers Have Found A Way To Exploit The Switch, And It's Apparently 'Unpatchable'

Link506

@Rika_Yoshitake I do realize how serious I am about this. Stuff like this happens all the time. There are people out there who are just there for the challenge- nothing less. But you can't look at all the modding scene as bad. It was the modding community made it possible for people to play Wii and DS games online after Nintendo cancelled the service. These people are called 'grey hats' and while they weren't given permission to hack the console, neither do have malicious intents. If you don't believe me, look it up.

However, it's the people who take the hacker's work then EXPAND on it so that it BECOMES malicious is when we start to have a problem. Pirating, cheating and and game-breaking have severe implications-- especially in online games.

Re: Hackers Have Found A Way To Exploit The Switch, And It's Apparently 'Unpatchable'

Link506

@Rika_Yoshitake I wouldn't that's the case for most of the people who exploit these chips in the first place. Most of these people are just there for the fun of poking around with a new system and seeing what unsigned code they can run. Think about that post months ago about running Kubuntu (KDE+ Ubuntu) on the switch, or that other one with the dolphin emulator running. There's always going to be people who want to pirate games, but jumping on the folks who just want to tinker with a system in a benevolent fashion is unfair to not only them, but most of the hacking community.

Re: Hackers Have Found A Way To Exploit The Switch, And It's Apparently 'Unpatchable'

Link506

@Spectra They can do a revision change in the Switch's Tegra hardware which would stop this current version of the hack to work, but it would only be a matter of time until the switch would inevitably be 'hacked' again. Other than that, there isn't much to do, and thus Nintendo will very likely be doing just that.

These type of hacks are typically harder to replicate by your average user, so in my eyes this doesn't seem to be a big of a deal. Most people would would go for this kind of thing are just there to poke around with a new system and give themselves a challenge, maybe run a some unsigned code just to see if it works. Most pirates won't bother with sort of thing.

Re: Soapbox: Breath Of The Wild Is Amazing, But Is It The 3D Zelda That Enthusiasts Expected?

Link506

There are many things I expect from a Zelda game, and BotW delivered more than I wanted...and also missed standards in the series. None of the tunes through the game stuck with me or felt different and interesting. Music has always been a staple for the series, heck even the items revolve around it like the Wind Waker, Ocarina, and heck even the reeds and harp from ST and SS. Speaking of items, that's another thing I wish they brought in. Even if the beetle and Hookshot didn't do much to enhance the game play, they would still be fun additions. And finally, the story was lacking. Scrounging around for short, few second memory flashbacks didn't make an impact on the story of the future. I understand that's why they did it- to make the story skip-able, but because it was in the past, it didn't feel like it had any meaning- that your actions as a player had no impact on the game until finally you beat gannon, by which the game is finally over.

Re: Retail Version of DOOM on Switch Will Need a Download for Online Multiplayer

Link506

@SLIGEACH_EIRE As much as I hate to say it, that why we have hackers and data miners. They store that data and it gets passed around the web years to come. And that's where the few good people on the internet come out and help to path the game with their own tools for future generations to play and enjoy with emulators.

Or they could simply get the graphically better pc version up and running on their desktops in the future.
