I want the Pokémon Company to lose so badly.
You can't patent or copyright a concept, you can't patent or own an idea. The monster-collecting RPG genre is just that — a genre.
Unless The Pokémon Company magically owns some patents to the concept of "sandbox-survival genre games" that I don't know about 😒
Palword skirts the line between parody, or even homage, sure. But it in no way was advertised or sold as a Pokémon product. This should not hold up in an infringement case.
There should not be a world where entire corporations have patented ownership of specific game genres.
Nintendo just announced Switch bundles for the holidays YESTERDAY.
They're not gonna tell parents and guardians "hey, here's this Switch bundle for your holidays, but don't buy it - we got a new system coming in just a few months!."
It's been said that there isn't evidence of a video game industry crash, and it's been said that the industry is creating jobs and experiencing growth.
...I really don't know how believable that is when news like this has been popping up every day.
@HeadPirate "Irrelevant to our current discussion."
In what way? Because money being funneled to CEOs and "investors" who aren't actively involved in game development, does not necessitate conflation with a successful business industry.
@HeadPirate The video game industry is projected to bring in $208 billion in 2024, a 5% increase from 2023.
Now how much of those billions are going to dev team paychecks and income for other boots-on-the-ground workers? And how much of those billions are going to CEOs and "investors"?
Red flag behavior from Capcom.
This trick didn't work for Darkstalkers, it's not gonna work for MvC.
I'm very tired of this carrot-dangling "if you really loved me, you'd buy this re-release" behavior from corpo game publishers.
If Capcom actually wanted to make a new MvC game they'd, you know, actually do it.
I have a full time job, a commute, a spouse, a personal life, and as I get older I'm getting increasingly impatient with things that waste my time.
I'd rather play and replay a 3 hour game that I love (example: Untitled Goose Game) than a 100 hour game I only tolerate (example: Breath of the Wild).
Wayforward has a pretty mixed track record. But whenever they aim high, they don't miss.
This has been on my radar for a while, and I'm glad to hear it turned out well.
@The_Trooper49 @Rainbowjames From my experience, imported physical games will still let you play online, regardless of region. So import away and have fun!
The new Carmen Sandiego cartoon is surprisingly delightful, and it's neat seeing a game centered around it. A detective game feels right at home for the IP, so I'm gonna keep an eye on this.
I have never been more excited for a compilation release in all my years. These are stellar fighting games that have barely aged a day since their original releases, but also a series of games that mean a lot to me personally.
Even if the emulation was shoddy, I still would have bought this compilation at least twice 😅 But I'm glad to hear all is well. "Let's go crazy!"
@msvt Big time agree with you, yes. Playing Breath of the Wild felt new and clever back in 2017. The idea of playing what is basically a DX version of the same game in 2023? No thanks.
See, things like this make it real hard to believe a Switch 2 announcement will happen this month. Nintendo are gonna wanna make a hard push to maximize Switch sales for the December Holidays.
@DripDropCop146 "Who plays Smash for the story" is a very fair question, and I think it's a good one to ask. I mean, there's a reason it hasn't been seen since Brawl 🤷🏽♀️
@AstroTheGamosian "But I have always said that if AI is here to stay, then we need try and make AI work for us instead of against us."
That's kinda the problem. Money hungry corporate leadership and "investors" want to make more profit by making AI work for us, instead of allowing workers to work for us.
Hale is right, and there are too many people missing out on the bigger picture.
It's not just writers, actors, or game developers that are hanging on by a thread.
Real-world news sites are using AI to compose articles. Call centers are switching to AI prompt bots.
There's no customer service job that won't be overridden by AI and self-serve kiosks. White collar desk jobs are also endangered, as is evidenced by a decaying job market.
When AI impacts the game industry, yeah, it sucks. But when AI impacts everyone?? That's terrifying.
This is about way more than voice actor royalties, and everyone needs to realize that real quick.
@batmanbud2 I'm fine with that. Video games are for gameplay, and that's what most people care about first (myself included). If I want a compelling (read as: good) story, I'll read a book.

Re: New Pokémon Emerald ROM Hack Contains Redrawn Sprites From 130 Artists
Very cute. There's a few rom hacks for the 8 bit games that clean up the sprites real well too.
Re: Palworld Developer Responds To Nintendo Lawsuit
This was the push I needed to buy Palworld for my Series X last night. ...even if it ends up being a situation where I bought it before I can't.

I can already hear "Creative Exercise" in my head.
Re: Rumour: Supposed 'Switch 2' Design Photos And Specs Surface Online
I hope this is real, because wow that is classy.
Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's SNES Library With Four More Titles
@shonenjump86 There's a lot of killer Sega and third-party games missing from the Genesis/Mega Drive online app.
I suspect Nintendo is just cheaping out on giving subscribers the goods: https://www.nintendolife.com/news/2021/10/nintendo-leaker-suggests-pricing-of-switch-onlines-expansion-pack-could-be-tied-to-licensing-costs
Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's SNES Library With Four More Titles
@PKDuckman Now that I think about it, when is the last time the NSO got a new Genesis game? 🤔
Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's SNES Library With Four More Titles
I remember Battletoads & Double Dragon being a fun time. Looking forward to seeing how it holds up.
UPDATE: Not as good as I remember, but still neat.
Re: Marvel Vs. Capcom Players Beware, Fighting Game Legend Justin Wong Is Crushing Online Opponents
Now let's ask him about Third Strike for the 8,037th time, just to knock him down a peg 😅
In all seriousness, the guy is a living legend. Respect.
Re: 'My Time At Evershine' Revealed, Confirmed For Switch Successor
the game's still in early development.
the developer is just future proofing.
a nothing burger announcement.

Re: New AI Model Can Recreate Super Mario Bros. Footage, But It's Full Of Glitches
There were people in the comments mocking Jennifer Hale. Accusing her of being greedy for voice acting residuals.
But see, when she said AI is "coming for us all," she wasn't kidding.
Every member of the working class in every industry field needs to be aware... and maybe even afraid.

Baldur's Gate 3 springs to mind immediately. That game is so beloved, just mentioning "it runs on Switch 2" would put more eyes on that system.

Very tempting Standard Edition. Love LRG.
Re: Rumour: 'Industry Whispers' Fuel Speculation Of A Switch 2 Reveal This Month
I'll believe it when I see it, because I definitely don't believe it.
Nintendo aren't going to kneecap the last holiday season of Switch sales, by telling customers a new model is just months away.

Re: Capcom Outlines Changes To Each Game In 'Fighting Collection 2'
Do the games play well? Do the play mechanics work on console?
If so, then good.
That's all that matters.
Everything else is nitpicking. "Censorship." Please.
