[Update: Mon 9th Jan, 2023 21:00 GMT]
Squishmallows makers JazWares responded to this story, with a spokesperson confirming the following to Polygon:
"Squishmallows x Pokémon are not being recalled, they simply set a bit too early. Fans can expect to see them roll out soon for purchase. This happens sometimes — stock goes out on the floor a bit early and systems have not yet caught up."
There is still no official confirmation of when these will be released to the public.

Over the past week, shoppers have been heading into Walmart in the US only to discover, to their surprise, that Pokémon Squishmallows — which were previously only being sold on the Pokémon Center website — available to buy on the shop floor. Of course, they're already sold out online, so anyone who wants one of these squishy Pikachus or Gengars is out of luck — unless they get lucky at a Walmart, apparently.
Here are some of the individual reports of Pokémallow sightings:
These bad boys are only $15-17, much less than the $30 they cost on the official Pokémon site. The Pokémon Center is hoping to restock the Squishmallows by Spring 2023, so it's surprising to see these out in the wild already.
Some are reporting that the Walmart Pokémon Squishmallows are actually lower quality, hence the lower price:
This does appear to be the case, if you compare the two versions:
It turns out that this whole debacle might have been an oopsie on the part of Walmart, as multiple people have witnessed them being recalled, and others have said that the Pokémon Squishmallows did not yet have SKUs on the payment system, meaning that they weren't intended to be sold yet.
One Reddit commenter states that the release date for these Squishmallows is the 9th January 2023, and although there aren't any other sources that we can find to corroborate that, fans appear to have accepted that as gospel.
If you're in the States, it may be worth checking your local Walmart, but otherwise, we'll all just have to sit tight until the 9th January. Or later. Or never. Who knows.

Hot take. They weren’t recalled. It was a swarm of blood thirsty resellers across the nation who bought them all and are now selling them on eBay, Mercari, etc etc for about 3x the original price. Reseller Skynet has become self-aware.
Oops.. the Walmart ones are actually cuter than the Pokémon center ones! 🤔 I’m gonna have to make a little trip to Walmart soon!
The Walmart ones are much rounder, therefore much better.
I don't make the rules, I just report the facts.
I think the "Walmart" ones are the general release ones, more like regular squashmallows (My GF has two squashmallows, they are really nice! Got her one for our anniversary and one for Christmas )
I doubt they have been recalled, just Walmart covering themselves.
I’m honestly interested to know the reason for this. In this case I think the story may be more interesting than the product
Oh, and what a surprise. The Walmart ones are already on eBay for $40+ each… 🙁
At 58 yrs old I no longer understand this stuff, where’s my Ensure and TV guide?
These seem much more generic(?) to me. The original ones had a real high quality look and feel to them while these seem... less so..
Omg really??? I mean I'm Canadian but that's close enough, right? Maybe one of the Walmarts in my province has some just lying around in a bin... Okay so there are three in my city I can hit up, and I'll ask my brother to keep an eye out in the one back home. I must have them.
@ATHFjman18 If people wouldn't buy them, scalpers wouldn't scalp them.
It's pretty hilarious these people acting like $15 for something that cost less than $2 to make is some amazing deal.
Ok, that Pikachu is pretty cute, but i already have like… 10 or more Squishmallows (listen most of them are the very tiny ones im not crazy i swear).
Sprigatito squishmallow or riot!
Maybe update the headline since it’s false information? They’re not being recalled.
@theModestMouse
They are cheaper than on the official site. But yeah, overall it isn’t a great deal.
Tbh I'd rather have FAT Pikachu than Long Pikachu. The long one doesn't look right lol.
Yeah, can't understand all the rage, these are as generic as they come. With that said, if they did one of Pangoro or Ursaring, I might be tempted.
This has all been great for publicity because I had no idea these existed.
