@Araquanid Worst analogy I've ever read. You can be inspired by something and make it your own or you can take something and essentially edit it to make it sound a little different. The latter can be a copyright violation.
I don't know if this lawyer is actually from Nintendo, not sure I believe that, but let's say they are.
The videos were taken down due to monetization, not due to using the copyrighted material for fan remix use. Otherwise, dozens of famous musicians who have made Metroid remixes for decades would have had their stuff taken down as well. It's also due to the laws regarding whether a soundtrack has been released/sold to the public separately. Dread's has not yet. This Youtuber is clearly ignorant of the laws and not how to skirt around them.
Also, if this guy really was just making the videos for fun and not money, why monetize them? He dug his own grave here.
@twztid13 Getting full benefits is on the older side of 66 in the US, so if you can afford it, 64 is hardly any different. Japan is 70 now, from what I've read, though it was only 65 last year if I'm to believe Google. Who knows, maybe he has family obligations that are more important.
Anyway, thank you for the memories, Hashimoto-san.
@GrailUK Too bad there aren't many AAA devs that do that (so it would seem), what with launches and patches constantly releasing with game-breaking bugs or balancing that might've looked good on paper, but clearly wasn't actually tested.
Being able to play as Tails and Knuckles always felt like the devs giving you ways to break the balanced designs. I don't care how ill-suited CD is for Knuckles, I want to know how drastically the gameplay changes for him.
A buddy of mine gifted me this back in the day, but I never played it because I had a backlog then just like I do now. It does look fun.
@Olliemar28 Found a minor grammatical error - "Here at Nintendo Life, we love video games. Heck, we should do, right?" Guessing that should be "we should" or "we should too"?
@Luke937 I see where you're coming from, but like with any other medium, you need to know where to look. Since this is year 2022, it's damn near impossible for a game to be unique in the sense that it doesn't take inspiration from other games. So, you have to look at it by asking how it takes concepts that have been done before and turns them on their heads.
The SteamWorld Dig series (indie games) are digging metroidvanias that add in the mechanics of filling up your inventory and doing it until your light source runs out. All design ideas that have been done many times before, but rarely to a high degree of quality and execution. Cuphead is another indie example of this. Ever play Shovel Knight? I'm not sure that does anything unique and yet it's considered a masterpiece. On the other hand, the vast majority of mobile games are either blatant ripoffs and/or lack any kind of quality, so don't even bother looking there.
Moving on to AA and AAA games, since you believe they're superior, these devs are 100% not absolved from copying from other devs or even themselves. FIFA and most AAA sports games do yearly releases, but are essentially just copypastas with very minimal changes each year, yet charge $60 and often restrict content to paid DLC/services after you initially pay $60. Most AAA's, including Nintendo, tend to release games in a secretly unfinished state that the public would only learn once the game is released, despite the devs/pubs calling them 1.0 versions. Game-breaking code, unbalanced mechanics, missing features (sometimes marketed as Day One DLC), microtransactions, etc., all for the high price of full retail $60-$70 or more if there's DLC.
So, people stop calling it a Smash killer, serious or in jest. Fine, what next? The internet will find a new sarcastic term to use against the game. Or the game will receive even less social media highlights because no one is using that comparison anymore. Regardless, I don't think this will help the game at all.
What I don't get is why creators can't take the flag off themselves. There are creators who do videos intentionally designed for kids, so it's not like having creators remove the flag if they don't want it wouldn't suddenly make Youtube Kids barren.
For me, the list goes: 10. Guard (never got around to playing) 9. Starlink (never got around to playing) 8. Adventures 7. Command 6. 2 5. Assault 4. OG 3. 64 2. Zero 1. 64 3D
Top 3 are more or less tied, 64 isn't next to 64 3D because of stereoscopic 3D, graphics and no more N64 controller.
@sixrings Minority or not, it doesn't change the fact the majority of people are in fact lazy and will find anything to complain about rather than try to enjoy what life offers so they can discredit an entire product. Zero and Adventures should be swapped.
Hadn't even heard of this game until this article, lol.
I was planning on buying Sol Cresta until they offered Day One DLC, turning the complete package of the game into a $50 purchase. Can't think of any reason why a publisher would need to release Day One DLC, especially for a shmup, unless the game is free to play and Day One has a long history of being a red flag for a game. No thanks, waiting for a nice sale on that one... maybe.
@Cooliofunk https://en.psprices.com/region-us/index?platform=3DS This seems to be a good site that rounds together what's on sale. It also shows the history of sales for each game and you can set reminders for when it goes on sale.
I don't understand the love for the NES Remix series. I played through the first one and was extremely disappointed at how mind-numbingly easy and boring the whole game was, including the Remix levels. Half the game felt like micro-tutorials to show you how the games worked. For everything I read about Remix leading up to buying it, I was expecting whole levels with crazy changes akin to what modders do to any and all games they sink their teeth into, not WarioWare-like micro games with no depth. Also felt like Remix's target audience was people who have never played NES games before which, again, everything I read about Remix did not give me that impression before I bought it.
@RupeeClock Interesting. Any local multiplayer I did was actual racing and never cared for battle mode, so I just assumed there were always exclusive courses.
@FuriousGeorge Yes. This is why emulation and game preservation are becoming more and more important as an increasing number of digital storefronts are closing. Technically illegal, but there is a (very) slow movement in the industry to create an avenue that is legal for everyone. Microsoft being a big proponent in this.
@victordamazio A couple points. 1) I actively avoid buying things on Android (don't use iOS) because the platform is far more volatile than any console has ever been. Not only are both platforms updated just about yearly, but devs on mobile have a bad habit of not updating their games to be compatible with the new system updates. It's very easy for games to leave a mobile storefront for various reasons, much moreso than on a console.
2) Nintendo is not the only company to do this. Sony is as well. Boycotting is hardly the answer, that's just going to confuse them and discourage them from putting more things on the store, not the other way around. I'm not sure what the answer is, but it's not to stop supporting the storefronts you want them to keep open...
@RupeeClock Very curious what made you include Mario Kart 8 Deluxe when it included the DLC from the Wii U game at no extra charge and the announced DLC that's going to start arriving in a month was announced nearly five years after the game came out.
I understand where you're coming from, but try to learn the difference between a 1.0 feature complete game with optional DLC and a beta disguised as a 1.0 that was rushed out the door.
@AlexHarford 265 hours in the game for me, just recently got back into it. Looking at Hero's Path, there are still tons of places I haven't been to and didn't know existed, including actual labelled locations. The game just keeps on giving.
Awesome. I already beat 0% Hard mode, which gives one hit kills in the second half of the game, so this completes that idea. So far it's very fun, but EMMI are still just as slow as ever. That gives reason to still play the Hypermode mod.
Made several other fixes to improve playability and enjoyment of game. This concerns me a little bit though. Hopefully the speedrunning community isn't hindered at all by this update.
@GeneJacket Really have to disagree here. The acting in RER never struck me as some of the worst in gaming. Have you played 4 and witnessed anything Ashley said?
@Troll_Decimator So, word of mouth outside of Twitter = Twitter? I had two instances of non-Twitter sources telling me about Wordle; a person inviting me to play (they don't even use Twitter, btw) and a meme. Does that mean I'm living under a rock if I didn't already see Wordle tweets every day in my timeline?
I passed on this, trailer made it look like a glorified mobile game, tbh.
And seeing this article after the Mina Kickstarter just makes me want to really question what Yacht Club is thinking. Online play and PC-only mod support as paid content is ridiculous. Mina looks fun af, but this is Yacht Club we're talking here, it's not like they're hurting for money.
@Nico07 Oh wow, I completely forgot some SNES games cost that much! Ha ha. Back then, $60-$80 also felt more expensive, at least to my younger, not-yet-working self.
Yeah, uniform pricing would have to move the bar up or Sony and the others would adapt and push promos of some kind to help sway $70 purchases. I think either future is possible because there will always be people who won't buy unless there's a deep discount, those who just wait for the first sale, impulse buyers and the likely richer folks who don't care and just want to play Day One no matter the price.
@Nico07 Even so, my point was that Sony is not the only company do it. Most companies have been increasing their prices through DLC and MTX, as I mentioned earlier. Sometimes, it is Day One DLC that was probably going to be part of the base game until someone made the decision to be greedy. Sometimes, we get betas released as 1.0 versions and see DLC (and patches) six months or a year down the line that finally make the game feel complete.
The fact $60 has been the base price for most of the last ~40 years for console titles is less impressive when you factor in the advent of DLC and how much a game truly costs when you include those packs (ignoring MTX because it's mostly used to feed FOMO and impatience, not make games feel complete). So, that being said, $70 (vs $60) is negligible when you can easily wait for a sale, but that $10 increase is right in your face as opposed to hidden behind a DLC mask. This is an industry-wide trend that has been happening for almost two decades, but I don't see as many people chastising companies the way they're chastising Sony for $10 when they have the option of waiting for a cheaper price.
The cost of games will increase no matter what, it's just a matter of how and how well it's conveyed to the public.
Take Metroid for example. In the time between Metroid Prime 3: Corruption (2006) and Samus Returns (2017), Nintendo basically puked out two Metroid games that were very divisive and widely considered awful games, not in the spirit of what Metroid is known for. Also between that time, the gaming world saw releases like AM2R and Axiom Verge to fill the void, among other games. Even after AM2R when Samus Returns released, people were more than happy to play another Metroid style game (ignoring that it's Metroid itself here because I'm pointing out the genre).
Genres have evolved since the 80's, that's why I don't think the crash that happened back then will ever happen again. It might happen for a different reason, but not because of most games being of poor quality and same-y because the world knows better now.
@Dirty0814 Do you see the market hurting, do you see gamers crying out for something that is different so they have something, anything to play that isn't of poor quality? The market is exponentially larger than what it was in the 80's and just because there are hundreds of shmups or metroidvanias or FPSs to choose from doesn't mean they all play the same. Sure, there are tons of shovelware out there, that has literally never changed from day one, but what has changed is the increasing amount of games that are actually good.
Meanwhile, people saying they don't know what to choose because there's so many seem like they don't know how to do their own research and rely on the storefront's description and nothing more. Plenty of sites out there to tell you what to play, just have to look and not rely on a single storefront source.
I can tell you right now I wouldn't have 200+ hours on Pinball FX3 if I had to be glued to my TV or PC monitor and also wouldn't have bought the dozens of shmups for Switch that I have if it wasn't portable.
@blindsquarel They are, actually. Portability + a way to play most third parties and indies is absolutely a combo of reasons why people buy the Switch. Switch isn't just for Nintendo IPs, but for travelers, people who can't use the TV because of others in the household like if they have kids so they're busy watching kids shows or have to watch them in certain rooms where the TV isn't or it's just easier to play in any room they want.

Minor typo in the title "continues to leads" should be "continues to lead".

Maybe the title was intentionally awful to draw attention. Probably a good quarter of the comments wouldn't be talking about "Dronus" or "Drahnius".
