Re: Of Course Mario Kart World Is Being Review Bombed

Key19

Review bombing only exists because it is the only leverage that paid customers have over companies. The other leverage is a boycott, but you can't really do that once you've purchased the product. I don't think shaming unsatisfied customers for using their only tool is reasonable. If there was something else available for them, that'd be one thing, but there isn't, so we live with the situation we have.

Re: After Selling Pokémon GO For $3.5 Billion, Niantic Is Now Laying Off Employees

Key19

@speed_loafer I think if I was laid off I would be insulted to hear "...no way reflect the individuals' performance..."

If I'm not a bad worker, I'm mad about losing my job. Period. At least if I lose it for being bad I can do something about that next time.

I understand that it's just PR-speak nonsense that is simply trying to not give the laid-off workers any bad reputation moving forward, but the bottom line is that I'd be mad hearing it. That said, not ruining my future prospects is the least my now-former employer can do for me. So it's a necessary evil that I'd hate but would also expect as a "courtesy."

Re: Nintendo Direct February 2024: Every Announcement, Game Reveal, Trailer

Key19

Ender Magnolia?!? Put that on the list of "sequels/prequels I never expected to see." But I'm stoked!

Never played the original Epic Mickey, so will be interested in this for the right price. I'm a sucker for Platformers.

Super Monkey Ball is always a good time, and having a full-on new game might make me be willing to get back into the series. Again, for the right price.

Another Crab's Treasure looks wonderful. I'm not sure Switch is the route I'll go, but I think there's a high chance I end up with this one in my collection at some point.

Penny's Big Breakaway is another fabulous-looking game. 100% getting this one.

Pepper Grinder is one I've had on my Steam Wishlist for many months. Happy to see the wait is almost over! Looks neat.

Tales of Kenzera was announced at The Game Awards, right? Thought it looked awesome then. Not really much of a showcase today, but I am very much interested.

So, all in all, 7 games of interest for me is not shabby at all for any Direct. That said, only 3 of those were "breaking news" titles, so that does dampen the impact a bit. Regardless, it's nice to know I have Switch as an option for the others I already was interested in.

Re: Sea Of Stars Developer Sabotage Replacing 'The Completionist' NPC

Key19

@Not_Soos The money is NOT all accounted for by any means, and (separately) he explicitly lied about "all" of it going directly to charity and not being used to run the events, and then he turned around and used some of the money to offset event costs.

Also, people like the ones you mentioned tend to be attention-seeking and pity-seeking dramatics. "I know, if I publicize going to the hospital, people will feel bad for me and my life will be good again!" It's a very common manipulation tactic. I should know, as someone who struggles with being manipulative. This is the exact type of nonsense I would pull if I was desperate enough.

If people don't feel guilt and remorse, they have no motivation to change. It sucks that people have to carry those things even once they are changed for the better (if they change), but that's just the way humans are wired. Them being able to walk away without any baggage would be ultimately a disservice to the victims who will always have baggage because of what happened to them.

Re: Sea Of Stars Developer Sabotage Replacing 'The Completionist' NPC

@DiamondCore No, it makes him seem like an insincere tool who doesn't actually give a crap, just like every scripted celebrity "apology" that no one believes.

His only chance was to give a raw, unfiltered apology where he owned up to everything. Him opting for this route shows who he is. It in NO way makes him look better.

Re: 8BitDo Reveals Its New 'Ultimate C' Bluetooth Controller, Compatible With Switch

Key19

Strange color choices.

I own an 8BitDo controller (Pro 2), and I love everything about it EXCEPT that it won't wake my Switch, which can be super annoying but is a very momentary grievance. I don't see any reason why I would be rushing out to get another controller, though. I'm not looking to replace what I have, and I can't really think of anything they'd come up with that would change my mind on that. So while I'm sure this is a fantastic product, I don't see any chance of me getting it. I'm not willing to buy an entirely new controller just to avoid the lack of wake functionality with the one I have.

Re: Talking Point: What's The Most Difficult Mainline Mario Game?

Key19

I'd never heard of the Impossible Levels pack in NSMB2 until a YTer played through them, and they looked absolutely brutal. So I'm going to go with that.

But the hardest Mario games for me are SMB and SMB:TLL simply because the momentum and acceleration are so infuriatingly horrible. That and damage takes you down to small Mario even if you have a Fire Flower. That alone makes them much less forgiving than the newer games.

Re: Mario & Luigi's New Voice Actor Has Been Revealed

Key19

Honestly bummed it isn't the guy who does the voices for Il Dottore and Po, but hey, Genshin is still #reppin

In other news, it has been 1,368 days since Genshin Impact was officially revealed to be coming to the Switch, and while that seems bad on the surface, that's not too bad when you consider that it has been 69,420 days since we got Silksong news.

Re: Round Up: Developers React To Unity's New 'Runtime Fee' Policy

Key19

I read on Reddit that Unity has never turned a profit in all of its years of existence. To me, that tells me that taking a commission on every sale of a game that is made using its engine is probably the only way for them to ever actually make money, and I can't blame them for adapting their pricing in order to actually make money.

But every "sale" is very different than every "install," even if only first installs are counted. Add on the lack of transparency in the counting methodology and the ludicrous retroactivity of the policy change, and they took a reasonable idea and made it completely bonkers.

I'm surprised to see very little talk of litigation in the comment thread here. Reddit was filled with talk of it and it seems like that's the most likely outcome here. Nintendo, Disney, Microsoft, and more are all affected by this and won't play nice. I don't see Unity "out-lawyering" that all-star lineup of litigants.

As for player response, boycotting games that devs choose to keep available for sale is nonsensical. Why would you NOT buying a game help a dev in any way? If they have it for sale, that means they believe they are better off if you buy it. So support them by buying it.
