Re: Feature: Which Is The Absolute Best Nintendo Console Generation?

Key19

GCN+GBA is just unfair for me, but if I wasn't a Melee addict (and an F-Zero GX junkie), I probably wouldn't feel that way. GCN definitely had its weaknesses. Switch probably is the correct answer. BotW is how Zelda was meant to be played since the NES original, Odyssey is the best Mario game ever, SMM2 is a lazy modder's dream, and the indie library is absurd. Oh, and it's a hybrid console/handheld.

Re: Feature: Mario Kart: Double Dash!! Is The Best Mario Kart, Right? Let's Find Out

Important to note that it has, by far, the best victory results theme of the series (look it up if you don't know immediately what I'm talking about; it's still surviving on YouTube), and the recurring use of melodic whistling throughout the OST gives it the most distinctive musical style of all of the MK OSTs (rivaled only by the killer jazz band that was featured on many MK8/MK8D tracks).

Lastly, after hearing Ryukahr complain about Baby Park at every opportunity for the last year or so that he's been playing MK8D off and on, it's nice to see so many Baby Park shoutouts in the article. I've always loved the course and the accompanying theme (the constant increases in both musical key and tempo make a course that's already chaotic into something completely mental and sensory-overloading by the time the final lap comes around, and it's amazing).

Re: Kit And Krysta Reveal Their Least Favourite Mario And Zelda Games

If I had to pick one Mario game that I could never play again, it would easily be SMB1. I think people feel reluctant to pick it as a least-favorite because it's a "classic" and was a landmark moment in gaming history, but it's clearly the worst mainline Mario game IMO. The acceleration and momentum physics are aggravating, there's no ability to backtrack, there are a whopping two powerup types, springs are miserable to use, and there are several levels (within a pretty short game) that just aren't fun. I'm glad to have played it, but I have no desire to ever play it again.

Eagerly awaiting a sale on Eastward. Very ready to take the plunge on that one. I'm sure it's worth full price but I get an endorphin rush from taking advantage of sales. 😅

Ender Lilies was wonderful. Glad to see it mentioned.

Very sad to not see the EXCELLENT Kaze and the Wild Masks listed. That game deserves a lot more attention that it has gotten.

Re: Three More Switch Physical Editions Arrive This Week From Premium Edition Games

Cathedral and Phoenotopia are on my to-buy list, and I do like physical editions, so this is exciting to see! Unfortunately, it's just hard for the bargain buyer in me to pay up for these when I can wait for their next digital sales and likely pay $10 and $15 for them, respectively. I'm in no hurry given my backlog and I'm not much of a collector so the extra goodies aren't a draw for me.

Re: Blossom Tales Sequel To Be Published By Playtonic Next Year

I thought the original was fine. It didn't do anything special, fresh, or unique, but it was enjoyable enough. I fully expected a clone of A Link to the Past and it did everything I expected and nothing more. I was interested in that, as I hadn't played that type of game in.... gosh, at least a decade probably. I'm not sure I'll rush out to grab the sequel because that itch has been scratched.

Almost forgot: I loved the storytelling style and humor. Not that it was gut-busting, but the jokes were cute and the grandpa/grandkids often said something that made me smile either with humor or cuteness.

Re: Soapbox: Chiptune Is Great, But The Impact Of A Full Orchestra Is Unbeatable

Thankfully we get to have multiple versions of so many tracks within the VGM genre nowadays. OC ReMix has been a tremendous resource within the remixed/reimagined VGM space for decades. YouTube is filled with piano arrangements, jazz ensemble arrangements, rock/metal arrangements; you name it. You even have people like Smooth McGroove bringing a huge library of acapella to the table. And as technology improves, you can get a pretty convincing "orchestra" sound without having, you know, a full orchestra at your command, and fans have made tons of "orchestrated" arrangements to supplement what hasn't been done by the big studios.

We are definitely in the golden age of VGM.
