In a vacuum, the Switch Pro Controller is probably better than the GCN controller. But given that the GCN controller was the king for decades and that it still holds up today (even being superior to Switch Pro Controller for many in SSBU), I think it takes too prize. I don't think the Switch Pro Controller will have the same legacy in 20 years that the GCN controller has today. The GCN controller was by far the best controller ever made at the time it came out, and I would already prefer a DualSense to a Switch Pro Controller, so...
Visually stunning and a cool novelty to see Mario brought to life in cutting-edge visual production, but the attempts at humor were generally unfunny (except for the AMAZING plumbing commercial) or clichéd or predictable, the plot movement was pretty bland or clichéd or predictable, and the voice actors were generally mediocre (I thought Peach, Luigi, and Bowser were excellent, Cranky Kong was horrible, and everything else was somewhere in-between).
As I looked back on it walking out of the theater, I realized that not only did it not make me laugh, but it also didn't hold my attention or intrigue that well, either. It was just a very forgettable movie. If it wasn't Mario and wasn't visually stunning, I'd be fine never seeing it again.
So yeah, 6/10. Not bad. Not great. Hoping for better next time.
I think I'm pretty solidly in the "reusing the world makes it feel like DLC" camp at this point, so that's pretty disappointing. I hated the "cold environment" music in BotW, and hearing it again for a second in the gameplay trailer was a major letdown. We've heard all of these tracks and jingles a million times already; it's time for fresh content (not just musically, but with visual and structural assets as well).
I think Fuse is a really interesting mechanic, but I also worry that I will get more enjoyment out of seeing what other people do than what I do myself. I'm not much into crafting, so having the game veer into that territory is a little concerning. Still having breakable weapons is a major drag.
I dunno. I adored BotW, but I just have been very lukewarm about TotK since it was announced. Hopefully it's better than I expect.
The voice acting felt out of place. Perhaps it was the fact that the mouths didn't move with a rhythm anywhere close to that of the syllables. Perhaps it was because I'm used to nonsensical grunts and exclamations with the animation style. Perhaps both.
I was waiting to see something happen that actually looked interesting or, you know, fun. But those things never really materialized. Hopefully the full game is a different story. I'm a sucker for pretty visuals, so I'm still interested in keeping an eye on it, but so far it's a pass for me.
@CammyUnofficial "Stunning" is the Nintendo Life go-to word for headlines. It should be a drinking game. "Drink whenever you see a NL headline that has 'stunning' in it." 😝
It seems like such a bad business decision to make your customers select between GBA, PS1, and Atari Falcon 030. I understand that they're offering ROMs at the base investment level, but still, why do I want to have to acquire an emulator just for this specific game? Steam code should be an option at the ROM investment level. Would broaden the potential customer pool considerably.
I think people are too strictly viewing this as an "audition for inclusion in a real MK game" rather than as a "look how cool this is" type of thing. Sure, I agree with some of the critiques people have if we are assessing its viability as a publicly-available course, but I don't think this course ever had "for general public use" in mind. Maybe I'm wrong.
What I do know is that I had a blast watching it as a simple novelty, and that's what I hoped to get when I clicked Play.
@KingBowser IMO because game dev investments are becoming greater and greater. World building is becoming absurdly huge. Visuals are approaching the sublime. All of that means more and more labor required. When you have a game with 4K visuals and 50+ hours of content, it's not hard to understand $70. Obviously TotK does not have 4K going for it, but it will have a ton of content.
Visually appealing, but I'm really unsure about the underwater aspect. Seems to be basically the same general mechanic as what is seen in The Knight Witch, and that certainly did very well in reviews, but I still haven't gotten TKW because I'm just not sure I'll enjoy a lack of platforming, so I'm not sure I'll ever get this one either.
I've seen tons of ads for this on Facebook. Several different trailers. Nothing has ever shown anything to make me think that there's anything deeper here than "Fetchquest: The Game." And that sounds like it's going to be pretty freaking boring.
The world looks absolutely lovely. The music sounds nice. But I didn't particularly care for Kiki's Delivery Service (despite the lovely visuals) and I can't imagine that "playing" what appears to be essentially the movie would be any more enjoyable than watching the movie was.
@Kyloctopus It's actually amazing how much it can change even in a short amount of time. I lost a nice bit of weight a couple of years back just as a "can I do this?" challenge. Wasn't too difficult, but I ended up losing motivation to keep living in moderation and started being a bit of a glutton. Then, my weight went up to my all-time high in 2022 and I decided "I better lose weight again, but this time out of necessity."
It has not gone nearly as smoothly this time around despite doing basically the same thing. Only real difference is I'm a few years older.
My son fell into water. So the game respawned him back on land. But it picked a slope. So he was in an endless cycle of sliding into the water. Thankfully it eventually just respawned him at the last Pokémon Center he used (which happened to be quite some distance away).
I was expecting to have to force quit right before the cycle break. On the one hand, I was impressed it finally solved the issue. On the other hand, it was an embarrassing issue to occur in the first place.
Why you would ever assign a Metroidvania to a player who didn't last longer than 1 hour in Hollow Knight is beyond me.
For what it's worth, the PS5 version is lovely. If you have a PS5 and are at all interested in this game, give it a chance over there. It's a shame that it's a mess on Switch, but the core game had a lot of quality on a platform that runs it well.
It will be interesting to see how big this one gets. Mario Maker is big enough that it has essentially become the ultimate 2D platformer title in my opinion. You have an endless supply not only of levels in general, but specific types of levels as well. No matter what kind of 2D platforming itch you have, Mario Maker says "here are more options than you'd ever hope to finish." It's certainly my favorite 2D Mario game ever, and I can't see anything surpassing it.
Will this do the same to top-down Zelda and Zelda-likes?
@Takoda I am trying to think of a game that has made me laugh. I remember some chuckles during both Levelhead and Journey to the Savage Planet. Death's Door had a few one-liners. Video games can certainly provide gut-busting moments of hilarity, but that's more of a gameplay feature of certain genres (competitive, party) than something you get from storywriting.
It's a shame that two of the first four comments on this article disparage Kaze and the Wild Masks, because I LOVED it. It absolutely stands tall against the DKC series greats. You're doing yourself a disservice if you're unwilling to play it because it's not a completely unique game. Keep in mind that Nintendo is an endless sequel generator while you perform your logical gymnastics.
On topic, I played the original Blossom Tales and thought it was ok. I won't be in a hurry to get this sequel, but I could see me grabbing it down the line on a sale.
I agree entirely with the overall thesis here. Pokémon games HAVE been dull, uninteresting, and formulaic for generations (the last I played was Ruby). Plus, the Pokémon have continually devolved further and further into "grasping at straws" and the bizarre.
That said, I am genuinely interested in Scarlet/Violet. I almost bit on Arceus, but it was just too flawed of a game for my taste (including it being visually dreadful). I look forward to seeing more about S/V and am truly hopeful that it will still be interesting to me when launch arrives. With Arceus, each trailer and reveal made me less and less interested. So far, the opposite has been true with S/V, and that's exciting!
A nice article despite the portrayal of variable height jumping as being abnormal in a modern platformer. Maybe the reason Kate doesn't like platformers is because she's somehow only finding the oddballs that don't have variable height jumping (and they probably aren't very good!). 😝
Sound design and musical scoring are incredibly important for immersion, and HK indeed hits it out of the park in that area. In terms of executing "mood" through a combination of story, sound, and visuals, HK ranks right up there with Super Metroid as far as I'm concerned. And another modern game I'd give the same "meets the Super Metroid benchmark" praise to for "mood" is Eastward. HK's and Super Metroid's styles of gameplay appealed to me a bit more than Eastward's style did, though.

This poll desperately needs options for "sometimes" and/or "a little bit."
Re: Poll: What Score Would You Give To The Super Mario Bros. Movie?
I'd give it a 6/10.
Not as good as either Sonic movie.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer?

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Switch eShop Price Is $70 USD
BotW was worth $70
Presumably, TotK will be too
Smash Ultimate can make an argument IMO (but this gets murky because of DLC $$$)
What other Switch games can justify that price point though? There's no world in which I pay $70 for a Kirby game.
