Re: Video: Will Super Smash Bros. Switch Be a Port or a Brand New Game?

JamesR

To be honest, this is a silly question that will only ever be answered as "port" by some. Using the same game engine doesn't make the game a port, the game looking similar doesn't make the game a port. Splatoon 2 is not a port (enhanced or otherwise) of Splatoon but many seem to push that.

The fact that the Switch isn't a huge graphical leap over the Wii U will always allow people to claim that it's a Wii U port or was originally in development for Wii U.

@Brandon123 yes, I agree.

The way Smash is being handled is completely different to all the Wii U re-releases. Mario Kart 8 Deluxe was not featured in the original January presentation, Pokkén was announced by itself, Bayonetta 2 was cover for a Bayonetta 3 announcement, DKCTP/Hyrule Warriors were relegated to a mini Direct. These ports have been low key and at no time was there any ambiguity as to whether these games were ports or not.

Nintendo aren't going to 'break the internet' on a Smash reveal just to have to roll it back in a few weeks by declaring it a port of the Wii U game.

So, the Switch is getting Dark Souls day-and-date with the PS4. South Park and Okami HD 6 months behind. Crash as soon as the Sony exclusivity window is over. And Little Nightmares, Undertale and Wolfenstein II are likely within a year.

How is this bad for a system that was supposed to be dead on arrival?

Great Direct. It looks like the first half of the year is keeping the momentum. Very happy that Octopath Traveller has a date (and soon too). The Splatoon 2 DLC looks awesome and I'm very positive on Mario Tennis.

Smash is well... SMASH! This year's big "holiday" releases look like being Smash, Pokemon and Bayonetta 3. If they can pull these off... that's an incredible second year to add to the fantastic first year of Switch.

My story...

The Switch has been a complete game changer for me. I've had Nintendo systems since the NES but I'm now in my mid 30s, have a full time job and 5 kids. The family had a Wii U but it's incredibly difficult to find time in front of the TV in my house and simply unrealistic for me to play as many games as I would like. For this reason, my copy of Bayonetta 2 on Wii U remains unplayed.

Then comes the Switch... I've had Nintendo handhelds in the past but there's always been a gulf between handheld and home gaming. Without wanting to come across as a Nintendo PR dude, the Switch truly is console gaming that you can take with you. I've played more games this year than any point since the N64. It is, by far, my favourite console. I cannot see myself ever going back to a "console-only" experience (even if Nintendo launched one).

The multi-Switch household (as we now have many) works worryingly well with the kids having LAN parties playing Mario Kart, Splatoon and Minecraft. I imagine Nintendo got around 5k of my money this year and I don't regret a penny.

@SLIGEACH_EIRE I honestly don't think there's ever been a better first year line-up than that. In fact, nothing even comes close for my taste in games.

I understand that there are three old Wii U games are on the list but the ability to play on the go is a game-changer for many. If people are using the Switch in the same way as the Wii U but with better range when taking it to the toilet - then the re-releases of Bayonetta, Mario Kart and Pokken aren't exciting.
