@jimi I think the issue here is that the assumption that digital purchasers are not informed. I know:

-I pay more for a digital download than for a physical copy
-In (let's say) 10 years the infrastructure may not be there to recover old games
-I cannot sell my digital game
-I forfeit the chance that my game becomes super rare and valuable.

I also know that by buying digital, I am hurting the retail distribution sector that might leave us without games stores.

Despite this, I choose to buy digital. Others can disagree with my choice but I am not wrong or naive or missing something.

@Kiyata we are not naive. Personally, I value the ease of access of digital games far in excess of any savings on purchase/resale.

Different strokes for different folks. That's all.

@Moroboshi876 I admit that I've gone a little crazy and bought around 60 games (all digital - something like 20 retail, 40 indies) for the Switch over the past year.

@jimi I think that pre change the gold coins were worthless. After the change, they have a cash equivalent value. The fact that the rate at which you are earning changed doesn't really matter if you assign zero value to them at present.

My example is that before my 2000 gold coins were worthless. They now become a £20 eShop credit. That's good, right?

@JaxonH OK. Understood. I actually preloaded Kirby and got 70 coins. Had I waited, this would have been 250. So there is an edge effect here. I suppose it is better than they honour "old" gold coins rather than launching another type of coin next month.

But to be honest, there is nothing to spend gold coins on. As it stands I value them as completely worthless. After the change, I'll have £20 of eShop credit and 5% off all subsequent software. I think this is a good move overall.

So this is basically a 5% off all digital sales. That's good. I buy all digital, so I value this kind of reward scheme.

@Equinox 6 of them here! Myself, wife and 4 kids. Making the Switch a "personal" console is making my wallet hurt.

UK has never been Nintendo territory. It goes all the way back to the Sega Master System/NES rivalry. There also is a perception that Nintendo is just for "kids". Whatever! Personally, I find it hard to take the gaming scene in the UK seriously when (almost without fail) the top selling games are FIFA and CoD each and every year.

I have the Wii U version but was unable to finish it due to time. I will pick it up on Switch (actually I've already pre-loaded) so that i can play it on the train.

Not a fan of these kind of exploits.

Got this on Wii U but didn't love it. The concept sounds great but something was just a little off.

I think passing the Wii U milestone is just a psychological barrier that confirms Nintendo in on right track. It needed to do this in Year 1.

From now I don't really care whether it outsells the Wii, PS4, Xbox or 3DS - it just has to be a viable platform. And as these results demonstrate it certainly is.

Those Odyssey numbers are really very good. Great to see the Switch being a success. Splatoon 2 has surpassed Splatoon, Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will clearly outsell MK8. Xenoblade passing 1m in 4 weeks is great.

BTW I was so wrong about 1-2-Switch. Nearly 2m units sold is astonishing.

@JohnnyC playing alone, it's a calm, fun 2D platformer. You may not lose a life through the entire game.

Personally I think the multilayer with younger kids is where the games shine.

Only just came round to Kirby despite playing Nintendo since the NES. I have a huge appreciation of these games as my younger kids can play them as "entry level" platformers.

I love Planet Robobot and Kirby on the Wii. This will be a day one purchase for sure (I only haven't pre loaded as I know the kids will keep asking "when is it released?" )

@Angelic_Lapras_King I have absolutely learnt this lesson. I've been Nintendo first party only for too long... and never expected a drop within a month or two. Even the savings on NBA are very high.

@aaronsullivan personally I think the (free) coverage this will generate in the press means Nintendo Labo will have been a good return on investment even before a single set has been sold.

Do people seriously think Nintendo stopped working on the Virtual Console or Metroid Prime 4 for this? This is clearly a small project that Nintendo managed to get to market with how successful the Switch has become. Nintendo are clearly not abandoning hardcore gaming for cardboard.

As a Dad to a 10 year old boy, I know he will love this. We've bought a lot of these kind of educational toys and the price is always quite high. The quality of the software here seems to be much better than the competitors.

I really wish the Internet didn't get so jumpy each time an error or mistranslation occurs (especially as we know Nintendo won't be making these announcements in this way).

Also, I'm pretty sure that Nintendo's online offering is what we are currently playing. The longer they take to charge us, the better.

I would be very surprised if Samus Returns wasn't being worked on for the Switch. It just makes too much sense.

@AG_Awesome not sure. For me, a Netfix app would need to come with proper/integrated parental controls. E.g. a pre loaded Netflix/YouTube app without controls would make the Switch less appealing - I've had issues like this with smart TVs

Weren't there reports of the Netflix app being 'ready to go'? Personally, I wouldn't use my Switch for Netflix but people seem keen.

@Dev Woolly World is a wonderful game. I 100% it and had more fun with this than any 2D platformer since the SNES. I am looking forward to Yoshi on Switch.

I don't care about VR or 4K resolution.

@SleeplessKnight Looking at the current sales Mario Kart 8 Deluxe will outsell Maria Kart 8 and Pokken DX will outsell Pokken. I suspect Hyrule Warriors and DKC will see a similar result.

Also my kids are older and they've claimed the TV.

Very much enjoyed it. It's great to see Kirby being so close. I am also optimistic for Mario Tennis. The last one was good at its core majorly let down by the main gimmick and a lack of content. We will see but this time it seems that both of these are rectified.

I will be rebuying Donkey Kong and Hyrule Warriors. The portability of the Switch has been a game changer and I am always up for buying quality Wii U ports.

So between today and E3 we have Bayonetta 2, Mario Tennis, Kirby, Hyrule Warriors and Donkey Kong in terms of Nintendo IP/exclusives. Seems like a decent first half of the year.

This was a great Direct. It tells us what to expect up to E3 and it is pretty good. I will double dip for DKC TF.

Mario Tennis is looks good. Here's hoping it's packed with content.

Do these people know that the Switch has no games?

I do not know whether gaming addiction should be classified as a mental disorder.

But I do know that citing "common sense" is not good enough in any way. Provide peer-reviewed, independent research published in a reputable scientific journal.

These are crazy high numbers. If we take Nintendo at their word (i.e. 2.74m in March, 14m in 2017 and now 20m in 2018) this surpasses not just the Wii U but also the Gamecube and N64 in just 2 years and a month.
