@Burning_Spear Ah, I see. A purist. Well, in that case, yes it will be difficult because you are 100% correct, some of the moon hiding spots are downright evil. You can still do it though! And respect to you, for playing the game the way it was designed to be played and not cheating. Good luck on your quest!
@Vortexeo Lightning Returns is my most hated RPG. In fact it might be my most hated game altogether. I was finishing up a run to complete any FF games I had missed through the years. It was my "Year of Final Fantasy". I needed to finish 12, 13, 13-2, Lightning Returns and 15. (I had beaten all the others across the decades.) I made it past 12, 13 and 13-2. I got about halfway through Lightning Returns and had to stop. The game was sooooo boring, and it was unnecessarily complex as far what exactly you are supposed to do. The music was downright awful, which is a sin for a FF game. Lightning was utterly lifeless and bland, and the other characters were written so poorly they were practically different people from the first games, with motivations and actions far removed from what we had come to understand about them. It felt like a series of fetch quests you could never really pull off in time without multiple playthroughs or a guide, and both options seemed vastly unappealing. I ejected the game about halfway through and couldn't bring myself to go back. I never do that, usually stubbornly grinding along to be able to at least say "Yeah, I did it" (in my best Luigi voice). Not this time. It derailed my Year of FF plans too, since it ripped away any interest I had in playing more FF. 15 remains not started to this day. Cursed game. Although, to my surprise, and bewilderment, I have heard people say they actually enjoyed the game, so I guess your mileage may vary. I hope you have a good time with it.
I discovered something this past week. I can play the Switch while using the treadmill! I mean I wouldn't recommend playing while running, but I've been doing fine at a brisk walk. Since my current mission is the forever grind of max leveling all of my Octopath Traveler characters, I've been doing it on the move instead of sitting in one spot on the couch for endless hours. I average burning about 200 calories per hour of walking/grinding! Anybody else use the Switch this way? Characters currently range between 90-94 so far
I've been alternating each day between that and getting to 100% on Mario Odyssey. 481 moons so far. Almost ready to tackle the ultimate challenge of the Darker Side level run!
Back and forth each day between Octopath and Odyssey until 100% achieved! After that, still have 13 Sentinels to finish. Looking forward to playing Mario Wonder with the family on Friday too!
Mario needs to finish off Bowser once and for all. You never mess with an Italian's girl! If I was Mario, Bowser would already be sleeping with the Cheep-Cheeps.
No. The hours of my life are finite. I sacrifice most of them working in order to maintain a living. The dollars I get in exchange are valuable and when I spend them on something, I prefer to actually own it. This includes my library of games. Forever physical! (No I did not just plug Limited Run Games.)
Switch NG is coming! Folks, we have 1 year until the next generation of Nintendo begins. If you have any unfinished business with Switch, start taking care of it now. Like most of you, my backlog is way to long to clear before Switch 2 hits. So I've prioritized my playlist to focus on my "Most Wanted" titles and will be knocking out what I can before next fall when we'll all be playing the new 3D Mario game and Metroid Prime 4!
Super Mario Odyssey: After beating the game, I've spent the last week, and all of today moving toward 100%. There is still a long way to go, but I've achieved all of the moons in Dark Side and am clearing moons and coins in all of the normal levels before tackling Darker Side.
Octopath Traveler: Leveling my characters to 99 (I know... pray for me), before wiping out the secret boss to obtain the true ending.
13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim: Halfway through the game. Will complete it after getting 100% in Odyssey and Octopath.
On deck: Dragon Quest 11. I'm afraid this one is going to eat up a sizable chunk of time. Wouldn't be surprised if I'm still playing it a month or two from now.
In the mail: Grandia 1+2 HD Remaster and Front Mission 1st.
My wishlist is slowly being erased as well. A New Monkey Island, a return of Prince of Persia, a Baten Kaitos remaster have all either happened this year, or are on the way. The Switch has also gifted us with nearly all of my favorite JRPG's of yore, such as Star Ocean 1+2, Grandia, Final Fantasy 1-12, Dragon Quest 1-3, Front Mission 1-3, Suikoden 1+2 and on and on and on. It has became THE greatest JRPG machine in my opinion.
Having said that, my pining days are not quite over. Here is what remains of my dream list...
1) Breath of Fire: I want a real, big budget console sequel AND a compilation of 1-5 in HD (Mobile 6 doesn't count, but Capcom can throw it in there if they want.)
2) Lunar: Get the old Game Arts band back together and give us a proper sequel. Have Noriyuke Iwadare compose the soundtrack, and get Victor Ireland to localize.
3) Lufia: A New Lufia would be amazing but I'd be happy with an HD collection of 1 & 2, plus the DS game.
4) Eternal Darkness 2: Pay Dennis Dyack to make a full blown, next gen sequel for upcoming hardware. Do it now!
5) Beyond Good and Evil 2: Ubisoft, release this game and end our torturous wait!
6) Final Fantasy 6 Remake: Big budget 3D retelling of 6, but keep Tetsuya Nomura away from it! Bring back Uematsu to rearrange the score and have it performed by an actual orchestra.
7) Wild Arms 6: Although I'm kind of actually getting this in Armed Fantasia, a spiritual successor by the original Wild Arms Director, Writer, Character Designer and Composer. So... I'm pretty excited about that.
8) Chrono Trigger 3: ....and while we're dreaming, a true sequel to Chrono Trigger/Cross written by Masato Kato and composed by Yasunori Mitsuda.
@BodkinDQ Ha! Interesting how our Mario Odyssey experiences were similar. I bought the game when it released. My first collected moons show October 2017. I shelved the game too in favor of other titles. With my excitement around Nintendo's next system growing, I figured I'd better rearrange my backlog priorities and take care of some unfinished business, lest my Nintendo fan card be revoked! Very glad that I did.
Congrats on breaking through the Gacha thing. Thanks for sharing your experience of persevering to rise out of the mire of that addiction. That is an inspiring feat, and worthy of respect!
Finally beat Super Mario Odyssey this weekend. As a Nintendo fan, I'm ashamed it took me 6 years to do it. (Especially since I contributed the title of the game to Nintendo!) I can't believe I prioritized other games over it for so long. I think Odyssey might be my favorite of the Mario series. It's probably a little too easy, and the controls are a little too floaty and loose compared to the razor sharp precision of something like Sunshine, but it had a perfect balance of new innovations and nostalgic nods to the entire history of the franchise. The game is absolutely jam packed with content, discoveries and secrets, almost overwhelmingly so. It really pulls you in to a "just one more moon" frame of mind where the time just melts away without you realizing it. Many nights were lost this way over the last few weeks. The art style is gorgeous, graphics dazzling and music a perfect fit. I love this game. Now the road to 100%.
This past week I also beat the post game dungeon and secret boss Gabriella in Star Ocean first departure R.
This week coming up I'll be grinding out my characters to beat the secret boss and obtain the true ending in Octopath Traveler.
After achieving 100% in Odyssey, I'll finish up 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim before moving on to Dragon Quest 11, a perfect game to sink into as the weather starts to turn chill and damp. That one will probably be my answer to this column for the next month or so.
Not a fan of Hamauzu's soundtracks, so this one might wear a little dull for me, but I do love the SaGa series, and am a fan of Masato Kato's work, so... I'll pick this up and place it on the shelf next to Alliance Alive. Hopefully get around to it eventually.
@KayFiOS You probably don't hear this very often, but X was my favorite of the series. Very slick and stylish RPG. I loved settling in and becoming a resident of the futuristic world they created, far from home on a distant planet. The music was so-so, but the mechs are AWESOME! (When you finally get them.) You are in for a fun ride!
@FishyS Both the Star Ocean Demo and Disgaea 7 demo are great. So good in fact that, after playing them I was inspired to go back and beat the secret dungeon in 1st departure R (after leveling my characters to the max of 255, I am finally ready), and order Disgaea 1 which I loved but haven't played since the PS2 days. It really is a slick and fun turned based strategy series exploding with style. But I remember the first game being looooong! How is Dragon Quest Monsters?
@ELtA427 Welcome to club SaGa! Kenji Ito was in top form with the soundtrack to 3. Bangers throughout, from the opening title theme, all the way through to the amazing final boss battle! Sparking (Glimmering?) new skills never gets old. Beautiful pixel artwork in that one too! I am really looking forward to the just announced SaGa Emerald Beyond. Have fun!!
Baten Kaitos was a shining highlight of the GameCube era. The environments are absolutely stunning, dripping with color and exquisite detail. The soundtrack is at or near the very top of Motoi Sakuraba's offerings, matching the quality of his scores for Star Ocean 2nd Story and Valkyrie Profile. The time based deck building combat was novel and kept gameplay fresh, if challenging, throughout the adventure. The entire experience felt like it was crafted with love to be something special. Don't miss this rare chance to pick up an overlooked jewel of a Nintendo exclusive JRPG. Already ordered my physical copy and can't wait to experience this series in HD!
@PinderSchloss I agree. I love wringing out all of the value I can from my games. Hunting down every collectible, mastering the optional challenges, maxing out character levels, claiming that 100% status. ESPECIALLY, in Nintendo games. I feel like these special moments are commemorated on other systems, with a memorial trophy and screenshot, so that later when you feel like reliving those moments of glory, or sharing/bragging about them with friends and family, you can. But on Nintendo, they result in nothing but fading memories. I remember dying like 150 times on my way to beating Champions Road in Super Mario 3D World. It would have been amazing to have earned an achievement when I finally pulled it off after all that work, but... nope. Here's an in-game stamp. That's it. Unless you boot that game back up, there is nothing to notate your.. achievement. I've often bought multi-platform titles on competing systems for this reason, but wish I didn't have to. I really want the next Switch to have trophies/achievements. Let people disable them if they don't want to participate.
Crystal Dynamics marketing and community team sucks. They have done more damage to their brand than good, with 80% of their messaging revolving around socio-political issues and 20% video games. You don't get to be bad at your job forever. I can understand why these people were let go, and good riddance.
Nintendo is the most sacred name in gaming. Hallowed even. No western entity is worthy of even touching them, much less owning them. Microsoft needs to back off!
Just Beat: Blake Stone - Planet Strike (PC) Now Playing: Dragon Slayer - The Legend of Heroes (TurboGrafx-CD) Up Next: Popful Mail (Sega CD) And then: Dragon Force (Saturn)
Definitely Eternal Darkness. There is no excuse for Nintendo letting that property wither and die.
I'm also waiting impatiently for Beyond Good & Evil 2. Played the first one on Gamecube. Would also like to see Kid Icarus make a comeback, but not in the comedic anime style we got on the 3DS.
GEX!!! F-I-N-A-L-L-Y!!! It's about time the gecko gets some love after all his lesser 3D platformer contemporaries have made comebacks over the past few years. A return of Gex has been my top gaming wish for awhile now. This is great! Now if only we could get Toys for Bob to do a true Gex 4. Oh yeah, it's tail time!!!
I've been a hiring manager for 20 years, and I can tell you that when you ignore race and gender completely, and truly focus on hiring the most qualified person for a position, the individual who represents the best fit for the type of work culture you are crafting, people with the right attitude, work ethic and values, you automatically end up with a diverse work force with representation from across the board. It happens by default, because there is talent and passion and commitment across the spectrum of gender and ethnicity. I've built teams that were comprised of 50% women in historically, male dominated fields, and seen many of them developed up into district and area managers or company executives right alongside their male counterparts, but I never accomplished that by entering the hiring process looking for a specific gender or race to tick a box or fill a quota.
There is a sentiment that we need to do that to fight back against discrimination, but the very act of doing that is discrimination in itself. There is also a notion that there is some prevalent bias toward offering positions to men over women, but the truth is, if you are an executive or manager responsible for hiring, and you like your job and respect the company you work for, your ultimate goal is to help it thrive and continue to achieve success. You don't accomplish this by passing over competent individuals within protected groups in favor of hiring less competent individuals, men or otherwise. "Best person for the job" is the mantra we should live by, and we need to be blind to all other factors including race and gender. We should not be striving to hire more of any type of person, nor should we refrain from hiring any one type of person.
Of course, having said all of this, you are often at the mercy of your candidate pool. There is important data missing in the article above. If we could see what percentage of Nintendo applicants were female, along with a general breakdown of their qualifications, we would be able to paint a more informed picture of what is truly transpiring with the situation.
This cinematic endeavor lacked a gripping narrative peppered with the subtle thematic elements we should demand from our animated motion pictures! I scoff at the low brow humor, the kinetic pacing and the bright colors. Oh how they burn my delicate eyes! Where was the INTRIGUE I ask you! Where was the sophisticated dalliance with the societal taboo that would have elevated this to high art!? Why was our praise not earned through controversy? The relationships between the characters were shallow, limited to the bonds between brothers and the admiration of a regal yet capable matriarch. Too restrained! They should have thrown off the shackles of expectation and layered the connections beneath betrayal, jealousy... forbidden romance! Macbeth this is not, and therefore dost not deserve your dollars, petty tokens of capitalist imperialism that they are.
Come on guys, it's a SUPER MARIO BROS movie! We've been waiting 30+ years for one of these. It only has to be fun. That's it. If it's fun, it's a success, and already light-years beyond what we got in that other Mario movie disaster that broke kids hearts everywhere a few decades ago.
@SuperFANicom No. Please.... Somehow that game ended up in our system one summer. Don't know how, we certainly never bought it. And yet, there we were, my brothers and I, dying repeatedly while trying to get off the beach while laughing mockingly at Lester all the while. I had pushed the horror of that game into some dark pocket of my consciousness, just to have it brutally ripped back into existence by your flagrantly irresponsible comment. How could you be so cruel!? Oh, the PTSD!

Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?
@Logicfire Hell yeah! I was going to say Faxanadu, but figured no one would know what I was talking about. Great call!!
Re: Poll: Which Dormant Nintendo Franchise Would You Most Like To See Return?
Definitely Eternal Darkness. There is no excuse for Nintendo letting that property wither and die.
I'm also waiting impatiently for Beyond Good & Evil 2. Played the first one on Gamecube. Would also like to see Kid Icarus make a comeback, but not in the comedic anime style we got on the 3DS.
Re: 50 Best NES Games Of All Time
Faxanadu is king.
Re: Gex Trilogy Collection Announced For Nintendo Switch
Re: Percentage Of Female Managers At Nintendo Hasn't Improved, Despite Pledges

@Zverik Young people can have common sense too.
Re: Poll: Goats Or Lizards? What Do You Think Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom's Zonai Look Like?
Hylians are nasty.
Re: Mortal Kombat 1 Kameo Fighters Announced Alongside Main Roster
JOHNNY CAGE.... Wins!
Re: Crash Bandicoot's Original Voice Actor Has Passed Away
Noooo. Why? Isn't it too early for the people who crafted 90's gaming culture to be passing away? Why does time have to move so fast? Sad now.
Re: Super Mario Bros. Theme Is The First Video Game Track Added To The Library Of Congress
As it should be.
Re: Video: Let's Discuss The Super Mario Bros. Movie
Re: Poll: Will You Be Getting The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Switch OLED?
No. Just bring out the Switch 2 already.

Re: Review: Lunark - The Love Letter The Cinematic Platforming Genre Deserves
@SuperFANicom No. Please.... Somehow that game ended up in our system one summer. Don't know how, we certainly never bought it. And yet, there we were, my brothers and I, dying repeatedly while trying to get off the beach while laughing mockingly at Lester all the while. I had pushed the horror of that game into some dark pocket of my consciousness, just to have it brutally ripped back into existence by your flagrantly irresponsible comment. How could you be so cruel!? Oh, the PTSD!
