Re: Backlog Club: Week Zero - Hello, And Welcome To Backlog Club

Grail_Quest

My backlog is like 400 games or something. If you factor in games that are still releasing, well... life just isn't long enough to get through them all, even if I played 24/7 with no food or sleep. Sooo... pick the best, the most important and the ones that call to you the most, and sweep the rest of that detritus away. NO REGRETS!

@pdl1989 I'm with you on the art style in the trailer, but not Dominic D'Amato. He IS Guybrush! He was just perfect in the role, and was meant to play it. Like Mark Hamill is Luke Skywalker and Michael J. Fox is Marty McFly. The character would never have been the same without him. It wouldn't feel right without him.

This is incredible news. Monkey Island is right up there with King's Quest as my favorite gaming franchises. Part 1 was legendary, and still fills me with the same excitement I felt as a kid, every time I boot it up and hear that intro theme kick in. Curse (part 3) is my favorite though, because I was already a fan at the time of the games release, so my hype was out of this world. Also, the introduction of Dominic D'Amato as the voice of Guybrush (who I desperately hope they get for this new game) as well as the beautiful hand drawn 2D art, just took Curse to another level! Also, who can forget the slacking pirates rhyming song!! Classic! Absolutely can not wait for this! In fact, I'll probably buy 2 copies!!

Re: Looks Like E3 2022 Is Officially Cancelled

I guess I'm in the minority. I LOVED E3. It has been a beloved tradition. A week of festivities. I usually take the 3 days of major press conferences off from work. A week every year of epic trailers, rumor confirmations, "one more thing" surprises, laughing until I cry at unscripted corporate fails, responding in chat with other gamers to massive cringe inducing moments/segments/speeches that become memes and live on as a part of our gamer collective consciousness for the following year and beyond. I will definitely miss it.

@sketchturner Agreed. My favorite FPS. Loved everything about this game. The level design, difficulty settings, controls (inverted, baby!), enemy reactions, music, even the sound effects. The 'Thwip!' of the silencer enabled pistol shot and 'Ktchtlnk' of a magazine reload are sounds that soothe the soul to this day. Joanna Dark may be forever, but it all started right here.

Re: Memory Pak: I Was Accidentally In The Perfect Place For The Nintendo Switch Launch Week

Cool story! I've had a few serendipitous Nintendo moments myself. Once, when I was in MY 20's and living it up as a Gamestop store manager I attended the company's annual manager conference in Las Vegas. That night, while they opened up the convention hall to allow us to try out some upcoming Gamecube games, I stepped into an elevator with Reggie Fils-ame! It was just me, Reggie and his two aides. All I had on me was my conference badge, so I asked one of his aides if I could borrow a pen and then asked Reggie if he would sign my badge, professing my undying adoration of Nintendo in the process. He smiled, signed the badge and thanked me for being a fan. Super nice (and very tall). Some time later, another magical coincidence let me to meet Charles Martinet, who would end up signing that very same badge. I still have that hanging up in my office, now almost twenty years later!

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (January 8th)

@VIIIAxel Alone in the Dark is my favorite horror franchise but... Sadly it has not held up well. My love for the series pretty much stems from the fact that I was lucky enough to play it upon release. At that time it WAS revolutionary. The 3D graphics over hand drawn backgrounds that were cutting edge and immersive in the mid 90's are now horribly dated. The innovative combat system that let you fight your supernatural enemies with pistols, rifles, rapiers and even karate chops would now be considered slow and clunky. The genre creating game design that saw you choose a male or female protagonist, then go unraveling the mystery of a haunted mansion as you strive to stay alive managing limited resources, with twisted camera angle perspectives, has since been copied and perfected by other series. Most people will have a hard time if they go back and play the original trilogy today. It did creep me out more than any other game for many years after first playing it though and it still remains dear to my heart.

Don't bother with any of the later games on PS3 or Wii, they were trash. There WAS a good reboot in the late 90's for PC and Dreamcast called Alone in the Dark: The New Nightmare. The game had excellent graphics and sound for its time, and the lighting mechanic that included the ability to peer into the shadows with a fluidly controlled flashlight was pretty awesome. If you want to check out the series, I would recommend starting there. Then, if you don't mind the awkwardness of older games from when they were first trying to figure out how to harness 3D to create new experiences, go back and play parts 1-3.

Have fun! (...and make sure to play with the lights out!)

@EarthboundBenjy Awesome that you're playing DQ4 and even more awesome that you're playing the original version. I play a DQ game about every 5 years or so as I work my way through the series. Started with part 1 when it launched in the U.S. and just finished part 5 a few months ago. So far my favorite is 2 (although it was HARD!) followed by 1, 4, 5 and then finally 3. 4 had some great music. I was kind of surprised to find that my favorite part of the game was Torneko's segment. I was sad when that ended. I too absolutely hated that they stripped full control of your party away in chapter 5, but keep at it and you will emerge victorious in the first segment of the Zenithian Saga! Happy Questing!

@VIIIAxel Congratulations on earning your Silent Hill badge! To complete that portion of the Advanced Survival Horror certification process you must now complete Silent Hill 2, once widely considered one of the scariest games ever made. Can you beat it.... alone? ...in the dark? (Which reminds me, we need a New Alone in the Dark game too!)
