Re: Shujinkou Has Been Updated On Switch, Here Are The Patch Notes

GoombaJMR

@hisownsidekick I am sorry to hear about your situation - if you ever need to vent, please feel free to message me or something. I had to take close care of my precious mama for several months and it was the most grueling times of my life, being only 21-23 at the time. Only reason this game was able to release was because she raised me well enough to be a son that could persevere to the end :'

@peiaqnaudle @nessisonett It's one of my favorite games too I put 100 hours into it and was sad that there were only two major story arcs haha. Banger music, fun dialogue, addicting gameplay loop, and lots of things to do (and minigames). Not sure why this hater had to make a new account just to post this comment though, haha...

@dartmonkey - Thank you! always love chatting with the community~

One more important note in the review:
"The lack of voice acting so you can hear the words and symbols you are learning prevents that" - There are male and female pronunciations for all of the hiragana, katakana, grammar sentences, and more in the kanban (signboards) that you encounter in the labyrinth, and they can all be checked at any time in the Party Menu, so it might be more accurate to say that we do have several hundred lines of male and female vocal lines!

@AJWolfTill Arigatou!! <3
Some notes (hope this isn't too long—sorry in advance—very passionate!):

  • We did our best to optimize for Switch - loading times can be slow for sure, but they are apparently fast on Switch 2!
  • We are trying to release a new patch, 1.0.2, with visual fidelity improvements, so that might come in a few weeks .
  • Controls are actually the same on other platforms with controllers, and we attempted to match it with other common games (X = open party menu, Y = toggle map, etc), but I have heard from some players that it can be unintuitive there, so we could do something in the future to fix that.
  • Interfaces not being the best is something I can agree with - it's probably our weakest component, as I had to learn how to design and code every menu in addition to the rest of the game. We'll do better in the second game in the trilogy!
  • Towns are also liked/disliked by critics, but we do have a Quick Travel button you can press with Y that is worth mentioning. If you wait like 3 or 5 seconds in each menu (dialogue, town, labyrinth), control indicators do pop up to help ya out!
  • What isn't mentioned in the review is that you can use the touchscreen to practice writing hiragana, katakana, and kanji (if you get the Sabaku Arc), and that unlocks midway in the second labyrinth, so that might be some important food-for-thought for learners. That second labyrinth's music is also far different from the Japanese vibes found in the first town and labyrinth.
  • Also, Yaiuu → yajuu for the name of the FOE-types, and while they are similar to Etrian Odyssey, "reskins" might be a little bit of a stretch for the Ihan Yajuu in Area 3 of the first labyrinth, which move in-real time regardless of the player's input or movement, which has never been done in any Etrian Odyssey game. I don't wan't to be critical, but do want to outline some of the facts about the game, as I know every mechanic like the back of my hand

@Vyacheslav333
A couple reasons - style-purposes, font-purposes, having the 9 letters (3 letter symmetry for our 3 main heroes), and because 'ou' is one way to represent おう when writing romanized form! Funny how we don't type out Tōkyō or Toukyou, but Tokyo, huh!

Hi, Director of Shujinkou here! Thank you so much for playing Shujinkou - it looks like you had an enjoyable time .

I'm assuming you cleared the first labyrinth and made it to the second town, and it reads like an excellent First Impressions type of article. But there doesn't seem to be any mention of story progression with unlocking Jin, Kou, the minigames, quests, or a lot of other features that are present in this title, which took seven whole years for the team and me to develop.

Assuming a little under 4 hours were played for this review, I'd hope you guys would be willing to take a little bit more of a deeper look into Shujinkou before giving it a score like this—there are some seriously creative puzzles, dungeons, and a fair amount of lore that explains why Shu is retired so young, etc. - no need to rush the review or anything!

Love you guys Nintendo Life, been around for 10+ years and am grateful for the coverage.

Re: One Of 2025's Best-Reviewed Games Has Quietly Released On Switch Today

GoombaJMR

@topsekret
Yes! Thank you! EO IV is probably my favorite game on 3DS (followed closely by FE Awakening & SMT IV + SMT SJ Redux and all the other SMT games).

We want to do physical the moment we have the funds, so it will depend on how launch goes! As a physical game collector, having a physical (game key cards don't count) is one of the most important things to me personally!

Amane is amazing! Great character design, magic glass cannon, and just a really mysterious character throughout the game . Wishing for a remake or SMT DS 3

Re: Shujinkou Is An RPG That Teaches You Japanese, And It's Aiming For A Release On Switch

GoombaJMR

Hey guys! I'm one of the developers at Shujinkou. Please note that the gameplay footage isn't finalized in any way, and we've only had a budget of $3000, hence the Kickstarter. Definitely give the campaign page a read if you want to learn a bit more about how the game will teach other parts of Japanese (outside of the standard hiragana, katakana, and kanji). If you have comments or concerns, feel free to message me on the Kickstarter page too - there's an option to direct message me with feedback

Re: Video: Nintendo Releases Showcase Video for Paper Mario: Color Splash

GoombaJMR

Even though I greatly dislike the path this series is going, I have to admit that the graphics are absolutely gorgeous (top 5 in the Wii U library?) and the music is not bad at all.

Unfortunately the card battle system looks kind of bland (HP units are gone now too?) and I don't see many new and unique characters. It does look like IS is trying though (as seen in the video), with maybe Miyamoto putting stops on new and unique characters.

I'll prolly end up buying this game in December for my siblings and me to play (they're finally old enough to know how to play PM). Let's hope it drops from 60$ before then! >o<

Re: Talking Point: The 2017 Role of the 3DS Was Established in its Nintendo Direct

GoombaJMR

@Bolt_Strike Except the JRPGs that do come out on the 3DS (the good ones) are all deep and extensive 30+ hour experiences that are really enjoyable (opinion), unlike most 10 hour story FPS games that have a bunch of whiny kids online and are rehashed like crazy. They may come out as often as FPS games on S & M platforms, but the quality for most all of them is always really up there.

But yeah, besides JRPGs... there hasn't been much to look forward to besides maybe some Kirby, Smash, AC, and ZTD (which is awesome btw).

Re: 7th Dragon III Code: VFD

GoombaJMR

Just finished the game today... it's such an excellent one. 30 hour adventure (without postgame) with glorious Yuzo Koshiro music, excellent animations, and infinite ways to modify how you battle with the eight diverse classes... I cannot recommend this game enough! I place it in the realm of the ultimate 3DS J-RPGS! (EOIV - FEA - SMTIV - FEF - RF4)
