In just a few short months, Yooka-Laylee will be available on all the major console platforms, but the wait couldn't feel any longer. The highly anticipated 3D platformer aims to scratch an itch that's been mostly left untouched since the days of the Nintendo 64, and it looks like it'll be quite the adventure. Recently, it was announced that Shovel Knight would be making a cameo appearance, and now an update on Playtonic's website has revealed more good news: there's going to be a physical edition.
Playtonic didn't really have much to say on it aside from the fact that it is happening, and it will be releasing at the same time that the digital version will be. For those of you that pledged on Kickstarter for the digital version and wish for a physical version instead, there'll soon be an option that will allow you to upgrade. Here's what the post had to say:
We're delighted to be able to offer Yooka-Laylee in both digital and boxed flavours in time for the game's launch in Q1 2017. As we speak, our business badgers are busily burrowing away on an initiative that will allow Kickstarter backers to upgrade their digital pledge to a physical version, if they choose to do so. We're not ready to share the exact details just yet, but very soon you should be able to stick your head in the badger hole and look for yourself.
What do you think? Will you be picking up a boxed edition? Drop us a comment in the section below.

I'm pretty excited for this one!
YEEEEEEAAAAAAAHHHHHH
This is just more incentive for me to get the game (by which I mean my Wii U barely has any storage left for me to even be able to download it... )
Oh GOD yes I am so buying the physical release!
Depends on what the price difference is as I may still go with the digital. I already think the digital version is going to sell for 29.99$. Guessing a physical will go for 39.99$ here stateside.
Will it come in a box like the N64?
@SheldonRandoms
Oh man, that would be awesome!
I hope so, would look great with my N64 collection.
Why is this such a big deal? Just looks like your average platformer to me.
@JubilifeRival It's a spiritual successor to one of gaming's most iconic entries: Banjo Kazooie.
It's hard to not to get excited about that.
YEEEEEEEEEES! I love indie games getting physical releases. Especially if they are like Shovel Knight and come with a good ol manual. I really do miss these. Always read through them on my way home.
@JubilifeRival I pity you.
@Phin68 I know that.
Follow up question then: What's all the hype behind Banjo Kazooie?
old news for me but i gotta agree yesssss.
@RyanSilberman I know right!
Any time someone asks an earnest question or is confused, my first instinct is to feel sorry for them too. What ignorant, unenlightened fools!
@JubilifeRival It's in many ways a rival of sorts to Mario 64. In many peoples opinion it surpasses Mario 64 In both gameplay and style. I like many people prefer it to Mario 64 and long for another entry in the Banjo series. This is as close as we are going to get. Many think of this as Banjo 3 so to speak.
@JubilifeRival Meh, I don't know. Just mass critical acclaim. Great nostalgia. Not a big deal.
Yooka-Laylee's fate shall not be determined by some digital shop whose lifespan is uncertain. I will upgrade my pledge to include the physical (Wii U) copy that I will cherish for eternity!
@Phin68
Translation: Me like nostalgia so game is good and me use sarcasm to somehow get point across
@Spoony_Tech Oh really? Maybe it's worth me looking into a bit more then, because I loved Mario 64.
@Spoony_Tech So, you don't think they'll go for full $60 retail on this? Is that due to what's on the KS page?
Oh well, Day 1 on retail, thank you Amazon Prime.
Excellent news. Now, if Yatch Club Games were able to release a Shovel Knight amiibo what're the chances of Playtonic doing the same?
@JubilifeRival But wasn't it valid? Nothing I said was incorrect.
@JubilifeRival ohai
@rjejr I'm just basing this off of what I've seen from Indies in the past for pricing. I believe that 29.99 is the premium price point for Indies going digital. Now the 10$ mark up for retail is that difference to distribute. Now do I think it's well worth 60$ that's yes for sure but being CF I still don't think they will go full price.
@JubilifeRival Don't get me wrong as I love Mario 64 and all 3d Mario games but there was just enough differences in gameplay that set them apart.
@JubilifeRival It's definitely one of the top N64 platformers, though I don't think it's aged too well. Still, that's why I'm so excited for this game, it looks like a modernized Banjo.
If the update process is not too convoluted, I'll gladly upgrade to physical release. Whenever it's coming.
Great to hear. I've been itching for a physical release of this game!
Wonder about the retail price for Wii U version...
General 3D platformer usually $40.
Oh yes!
Physical FTW! 😄
@JubilifeRival Collectathons r a rare sort of game and a genre not explored nowadays (anyone remember Spyro?). This is also a big reason for y this game is such a big deal (aside from being Banjo-Kazooie's spiritual successor).
Day one for me
Definitely upgrading to the physical edition !
This was already known for months!
My Wii U doesn't load discs so well (Smash Bros. softlocks on loading screens, telling me to insert the disc, and Twilight Princess HD takes ten seconds to bring up the Save menu), so I'm downloading this game, but it's nice to see an Indie developer have this option on launch day for a change; even Shovel Knight had to take its time to get a physical release.
Im in, im on board, the recent rise of indie games to physical is so amazing, keep this going everyone.
I was hoping the game was going to come to nx as well
This would be great if it happens as I'd prefer a physical version instead of the digital copy.
This is the best news of the day because i really really really dont like digital games.
The quote reads as if it may only be available to kickstarter backers, not for general release (physically).
I love having physical versions, so if its true, It will be Day 1!
@JubilifeRival You've also got to take into account that the studio working on this game is the core of Rareware, and that they have a stellar reputation. They haven't had a shot in some time now, so fans of their previous products are excited.
Considering that on the Kickstarter, the Steam version is £10, and the console digital version is £15, I'd guess that the physical version would likewise only be around £5 more, making it £20.
The bright side of not having backed it.
When I read "flavours" in the post, I immediately thought of @SLIGEACH_EIRE.
@Braok Hi creepy profile picture guy
@Captain_Gonru That's the interpretation this article suggests, and that we all want to believe, but the word "too" is noticeable by its absence to me, and the only thing that quote confirms is that they're working to make it available to Kickstarter backers, which is a defined figure they know already. Preparing physical copies for general retail is much greater cost/risk.
The first sentence reads like the headline. The second sentence then reads like elaboration of that headline.
Fingers crossed...
Oops, guess I'm too late to back the game now
....Is it 2017 yet?
Ooo.. I hope the upgrade to physcial won't be too unreasonably priced. :9
As long as the fee is right, I'll upgrade my pledge - though that will also depend on how much longer I'll have to wait compared to the instantly available digital edition.
Sweet. I don't have that much storage on my Wii U, so it's nice to know I can get it physically.
"The highly anticipated 3D platformer aims to scratch an itch that's been mostly left untouched since the days of the Nintendo 64"
Guess NL forgot about FreezeMe...
Yesss, indeed!
Very good
Yes!!!!
Physical all the way baby!
Awesome!!
Excellent news
As Olivia Newton-John once sang,
"LET'S GET PHYSICAL!"
@Captain_Gonru re: disc
It's my understanding that Playtonic is making the Wii U and PC versions and they farmed out the rest so I feel pretty confident they'll come thru for us. I also think they don't have a dev kit yet.
I really don't know why I give these guys a pass when I usually expect the rest from everyone else, but I do. Man can not live on negativity alone.
I actually kind of forgot about this.....YEAH IM EXCITED!!!
Glad to see Playtonic doing it right. I will definitely be getting the physical version of this game, day one.
Nice, a definite buy for me.
