We know that Sega has a year of celebrations planned to mark Sonic the Hedgehog's 25th birthday, but aside from merchandising deals and the like, it's still unknown if we'll be getting a fresh Sonic video game to mark the momentous occasion (and no, we don't consider the previously-confirmed Sonic Boom: Fire & Ice to be that game).
However, we might not have to wait that long to find out what's happening, if the Sonic Tumblr account is anything to go by. The post shows Denver Broncos player C.J. Anderson clad in a Sonic shirt, but it's the tags which are arguably more interesting:
#we have something coming up in February that some of you will be interested in... #but we can't talk about it yet! #don't tell anyone you saw this hint in the tumblr tags - okay?
Could this be a tease of as new game? Let us know what you think by posting a comment.

I bet it's a compilation announcement. The new game will be at E3.
D'oh........The Dever Broncos......you just dont know football SEGA...
@Damien of all the images that you can post, why the one from Secret Rings?
As for the next game, I can guarantee that its gonna suck. Why? Because SEGA that's why.
Announce of announce.
Maybe a line of Sonic amiibos?
@Antray1984 Beat me to it.
Let's hope we get something refreshingly good.
How about a Generations 2?
The next announcement is gonna be big. Think of the possibilities:
Sonic Labyrinth Remastered.
Knuckles & Knuckles.
Sonic '16, the sequel to the acclaimed '06.
Shadow the Hedgehog 2. & Knuckles. Featuring Knuckles from the Knuckles May Cry series.
And, what I'm personally expecting:
Knuckles Boom.
It says"some of you will be interested in", so yes, it could be a new game. Could as well say "a few of you".
Let's hope something good comes from this.
Dear Sega,
I want a new Phantasy Star 0 game on 3DS.
Thank you.
Does this have any relevance Sonic Generations 2 ???http://www.imdb.com/title/tt5290776/
How bout give us Sonic the Hedgehog 5, either that or Sonic RPG 2.
My wish list.
Sonic adventures 3D and HD for all consoles 3D is for the 3DS with improved gameplay on the new 3ds.
Sonic 3,Sonic and knuckles and sonic CD as 3D classics CD is new 3ds only.
@Socar Then it shows you haven't played much from SEGA.
It says not to tell anyone you saw it and what do you do.......WAY TO RUIN THE SECRET nlife........where is my spoiler alert tag line.......
All kidding aside, I'd like some sort of compilation maybe remastered in HD or something.....only because it doesnt seem like they haven't done well with newer Sonic games.
@Antray1984 nah, I think that's just a place holder that someone made. Wouldn't take any notice until Sega say something.
Roll on 1st February!
Sonic '16 is gonna be the big announcement. Gonna send Sonic 06 back into development for rethinking like FF14
let me guess.... Sonic: Announcement of a Announcement The Game launching this year? IM IN!
seriously hope it's a good game
Alright, let's hope it's something good.
I wonder what would happen if they made a Kickstarter for Sonic Adventure 3 (let's pretend Sonic 06 never happened). Would people actually back the game? I'm saying this because I remember at E3 last year they announced a Kickstarter campaign for Shenmue 3 and it was a big success if I remember correctly.
"Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyric 2!!!!!111"
Oh goody I so do love announcements for announcements.
@Mineral
Seconded. Make it so sega
It'll probably be on Groundhog Day (or to Sega, Hedgehog Day) when we hear the news. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Sega used that day for larger sonic announcements back in the mid-2000s.
Knuckles Boom?! Lol! Anyways, I'm just curious why this Denver Broncos player would know what Sega is up to.
So what's "Big's Big Fishing Adventure 3" that is at the end of the hashtags?
@DarthNocturnal
That's what I was thinking
@WireWare I am expecting: Mario Tennis Ultra Smash, Amiibo Ultra Festival, Made in Mario, and Devil Fourth.
@itscramtastic Because they're announcing Sonic Adventure 3 next month.
My biggest fear is that Nintendo systems will get left out. My biggest dream here is for Sonic Adventure 3....like it has been for well over a decade...
@SuperWiiU Ah. That makes sense. I remember seeing the post of the Game Grumps holding Big the Cat but I wasn't sure if anything else had been confirmed yet. A new Sonic Adventure would be nice, looks like it's time to fire up my Dreamcast for some Way-back Wednesday gaming!!
@SamirMalik I've played a LOT from SEGA. I've played Shinobi, Valkyria Chronicles, After Burner, Phantasy Star and many many more.
You love SEGA? Well then what excuse do they have releasing Yakuza 5 on PS3 instead of PS4/PC? What reason we can't get Phantasy Star Online 2? And what reason does SEGA really matter to the industry even? Its not like their games manage to stand out and even then, its not that many. Like only one or two gems out from them and the rest is garbage at best.
You know, with all of this hype over Sonic's 25th Anniversary...25 years, most of which has been crammed with mediocre, phoned-in titles that have tarnished the franchise's reputation...one would think that someone at Sega MIGHT hit upon the idea that would make fans REALLY pay attention: an anniversary of SEGA's entry into the console gaming market with a vast compilation of first and maybe even third party titles (especially those from Game Arts, Treasure, TechnoSoft, and SystemSoft Alpha) for the Master System, Genesis, Sega CD, 32X, Saturn, Dreamcast, and Game Gear. An ULTIMATE retro collection that would offer modern gamers a chance to experience what made Sega a household name before the suits at the top mismanaged the company into the ground and caused them to completely lose their way.
A LOT more gamers would line up to buy such a compilation than a 25th Anniversary Sonic game, just so you know, Sega.
Shadow The Edgehog 2?
I don't like Sonic Boom. But I will be happy if this is like Sonic Generations.
How about making a Sonic game that doesn't suck? Can Sega even do that?
@WireWare All GOTY worthy titles
@GreatPlayer
Oohh, that would be amazing! You have great taste.
@Thatguywhoeats Well yeah! Can't get any better.
Or can it?...
Oh my God. I got it.
Sonic: The (official) Dating Simulator.
Welp, the Game Awards is unnecessary this year.
SONIC BOOM UPDATE PATCH!
The only possibly interesting announcement from Sega concerning Sonic is that they will FINALLY return to their roots and give us a true Sonic sequel, one that every Sonic fan is waiting for. If it has anything to do with guns, secret rings, black knights, werewolves or big red buttons then color me uninterested.
And that is putting it mildly...
Been waiting for another mainline Sonic game after loving Lost World, here's hoping to a Wii U/3DS release.
Why are people requesting Sega makes non-Sonic games for a Sonic anniversary?
Something decent please...
I'll take a classic sonic collection disc as an appetizer but then I would expect a big fresh new sonic game behind it....if it falls into the gameplay of sonic adventure, heroes, colors or generations then I'm happy! Just no Boom please thx!!
@mjc0961 Yeah, I understand the logic, but there's just no way Sega would even touch any of their other franchises, nonetheless for Sonic's anniversary of all times. Seems like a silly request if you ask me.
That being said unfortunately it's telling when people don't even want a Sonic game for Sonic's own anniversary. lol
@mjc0961 I never understand why people say that recent sonic games are all no good. Generations is good, but not as good as the more recent ones.
Guys! They said not to tell anyone about the tags!!! Now we ain't getting any news next month. Thanks.
By the way the news is Sega Mega Drive 2
Where did you guys retrieve the image from?
@Socar Yakuza 5 came out 4 years ago.
Say they're garbage then play the games they released last year. How many were garbage?
They released Tembo the Badass Elephant, in collab with Game Freak mind you.
They released Dengeki Bunko's Fighting Climax.
They released Hatsune Miku: Project MIRAI DX
But no. They only release garbage, right?
Say you play SEGA all you want but you only told me "over the years" in an alternative way which doesn't tell me how well you follow them.
@SamirMalik All but Hatsune Miku were just average. And Yakuza 5 even if it came out four years ago, why release it on PS3 instead of PC/PS4 then? It could sell well enough to convince SEGA to localise Yakuza games actually and yet, they were dumb to do the opposite. So only one game being solid and that's that. Still nowhere as good as what Nintendo released last year as they atleast released 5 solid games.
