Last week's Nintendo Direct gave us some nice 3DS-sized surprises, one of which was the previously-unannounced Mario Sports Superstars.
The next entry in the long-running Mario Sports series of games, it aims to pull together several different disciplines into one package. Now, thanks to the Australian Board of Classification, we have confirmation of the development teams behind the project.
It will come as no surprise to see Camelot Software Planning's name listed - the company once famous for creating Sega's amazing Shining series of video games now pumps out the likes of Mario Tennis and Mario Golf.
More surprising is that Bandai Namco is involved with the game, although even this isn't without precedent - the veteran firm has already assisted Nintendo with other key projects, including Super Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS.
Oh, and while we're here, ignore that "multi platform" mention on the listing - the site also has Splatoon listed as multi platform as well, so it shouldn't be taken as a hint that we'll be getting a Wii U version.

Will it be any good, though?
@ottospooky hard to say, but the involved companies make me want this game more and more
You didn't mention Golden Sun in the news, Damien? You monster!
@Elanczewski I didn't want to pile on the misery by mentioning too many other franchises that Camelot SHOULD be making.
Damien, likely Namco Bandai is assisting with the baseball titles as they released the Mario baseball games for Gamecube and Wii.
I knew it. It was so obvious that Nintendo don't care anymore about Golden Sun and is ordering Camelot to make another boring Sports game with Mario.....poor Camelot.....
So Camelot have been working on this and not a new Golden Sun 😢
Nice. The game looked really fun.
oh man, if Bandai Namco are developing the baseball sport. i'll be surely happy and pre-order this.
While I wouldn't expect it to be as feature rich as the Mario sports games of old, I'm glad they aren't splitting it into five separate titles. I'd never buy a bare bones Mario tennis or golf individually but five sports bundled together is quite appealing.
Not just Camelot, but also Bandai-Namco is working on it?
This game keep getting more and more promising with each upcoming news (even if to be fair we don't have many news to work with yet ).
So no Final Fantasy characters this time.
I think Bandai Namco is doing just the baseball part, since they're the ones who developed Mario Superstar Baseball and Mario Super Sluggers (that were never released in PAL regions).
I wonder if Next Level Games is doing the soccer part. Unknown for the horse racing one.
Oh Camelot. I almost want to replay Golden Sun but I'm waiting till it is virtual consoled on a portable system.
The best thing is online multiplayer: 5 online games is worth the money in my opinion.
It's a shame they're not working together on something worthwhile.
Sigh... So Camelot is still wasting away on even another Mario Sport games, while Golden Sun is still forgotten.
At this point in time, I think all the good talent in Camelot must have left.
I am looking forward too this game but wish it was on the Wii U tho.
Actually, the other sports i'm kinda interested. Only Tennis and Baseball appeals me more than the other sports. Only Soccer that i will never want to touch. Sorry, i don't like soccer and never like at all despite billions people love that sport so much.
One of the announcements I was actually excited for in the Direct. Hopefully, it will be a good game and I might purchase it when it comes out.
"...the site also has Splatoon listed as multi platform as well, so it shouldn't be taken as a hint that we'll be getting a Wii U version."
Alex was right about Splatoon Legends all along! They might as well, since they're putting everything else on 3DS, though I don't know if the system could handle it.
On an unrelated note which has absolutely nothing to do with anything whatsoever, why should Nintendo relocate their headquarters to the harbor? ...They're a big fan of ports.
Surely they'll work on Golden Sun next...
Wasn't the Isaac assist trophy taken out of Smash 4? I don't want to look too deeply into things, but... That makes my gut grumble with no-good feelings.
That's a great combo, so I'm optimistic.
I don't own a 3ds but can see them doing a nx version for it. I like look of it too. Just depends on how it plays.
Its Camelot so it should be as fine as their Tennis and Golf games (Provided its not an empty shell like Mario Tennis on Wii U).
But I guess people will now be all like "WHERE'S AN RPG MODE LIKE THE CLASSIC HANDHELD MARIO TENNIS AND GOLF GAMES?!?" at Camelot.....
This was very badly needed on Wii U!!
The game actually looks really good, liking the look of Horse riding.
I don't think this will be a big hit but it looks very promising to me. Could be a good value portable timesink.
Maybe an NX port is being developed as well?
If the soccer game is anything like Mario Strikers Charged I'm sold.
With five of the most popular (if not THE most popular) sports in Japan featured, and all the Mushroom Kingdom favorites all over it, this is sure to be a seller.
@DarkmarkUnited
If Square had been handling this, I'm sure basketball would also have been in the mix. I admit at the time of the announce, I had to do a double take when the list of sports ended with "and horseback riding" instead of basket.
Like others have said, I wish it was coming to the Wii U or even possibly the NX as well instead of the 3DS, but I'm just happy we're getting another Mario sports game. I'm most excited for the baseball! I hope Camelot and Bandai-Namco don't disappoint!
Bandai Namco isn't good rendering the tree textures.
I noticed those from Go Vacation, Disney Magical World 1 & 2.
The tree textures and details was so crappy and awful. >_<
I'm very demanding when talking about beautiful scenery.
Those little aspect are really important for me to enjoy perfect scenery.
Just my opinion about Bandai Namco...
@Baker1000 I'd rather have Camelot work on Mario Golf and Tennis than Golden Sun. Find those far more enjoyable (especially when played with friends) than the latter.
Also, I'm sure that they are happier with making those games than Golden Sun since they will likely earn more.
Nintendo should not need assistance developing a 3DS game. There's got to be more to it than that.
Ah, so Camelot does still exist.
I'm getting this, but mostly because of Golf and Baseball. I wish Soccer was more like Strikers.
this might be the first mario sports game that im gonna buy..
Ah Bowser, the ol' one-handed slugger.
Anyway, I'm super excited for this one. The 11-a-side soccer (with hopefully minimal gimmicks that can be turned off) sells it for me, but Camelot's golf game is solid too.
Horse-racing is a bit odd, but I imagine it won't seem so strange when/if they announce Link/Epona DLC.
Looks good. Will wait for reviews...
Oh, so it's not a part of Square's own Mario Sports series (Mario Hoops 3-on-3/Mario Slam Basketball and Mario Sports Mix), hence the lack of Mario Kart-esque powerups, but what with Camelot being behind Mario Tennis and Bandai Namco being behind Mario Superstar Baseball, I'm not complaining at all.
Throw in a Motoi Sakuraba-composed soundtrack and you can count me in!
@Damo
Someday, Damien... someday.
@Barbiegurl777 That's tellin' em!!
Hope there's an RPG element.
Oh Camelot. Why do you do this to us...? Sure you are an expert in Mario Golf and Tennis, but you used to make Shining Force and Golden Sun. Why have thou forsaken Golden Sun? The Sun needs to rise again... especially after the events of Dark Dawn.
It is like one project ends, and I wish they work on Golden Sun but they announce another Mario Sports project. After Mario Golf 3DS, came Mario Tennis Wii U. Now this. le sigh
@Gorlokk
Yea I hope so too. I have been hoping that since the 3DS Mario Golf came out.
I remember there being so much speculation of Isaac being a possible (DLC) character after he was seen missing as an assist trophy.
Smash NX, I look forward to you xD
Edit: Might as well look forward to Mario Superstars as well!
@AlexSora89 I'm getting too old waiting for that day.
It's also worth mentioning that Bandai Namco helped develop Wii Sports Club, as well. Whether or not that is a good thing is a different story.
Pretty optimistic right now about this game. Hopefully Bandai Namco and Camelot can deliver on it's potential.
Seeing as Mario Golf and Mario Tennis already exist, and Mario Strikers to a lesser degree, I wish these Sports games used less common sports. They'd be much easier to recommend with more content to set them apart from the aforementioned series.
Also, blah blah, something about how it's a shame Camelot doesn't make Golden Sun anymore.
@Damo
I'm twenty-seven, so becoming "old" while waiting for games is no longer an issue to me. Heck, I'd have wanted a portable Smash way earlier, and the DS could pull it off regardless of what Sakurai had to say about the matter, but I've been fine with the handheld debut of the series being in 2014, when I was 25. So yeah.
@crzysortagamer

Same here. I'd love to have the first two Golden Sun games on 3DS... but, you know.
Camelot plez.
I was thinking about getting Mario tennis open but then out of nowhere they're like " and a new game Mario sports superstars with tennis." Somebody must really like me. I also have world tour but I'll definitely get this game. Super sluggers was fun and had great characters and stages, so I hope this one does too ( finally the babies are in a game other than Mario kart). Not sure about soccer as it looks like you have a captain and 10 Mario enemies. I enjoy playing as Mario enemies, but 10 of the same on the same team? No colour variations. I'm still getting it ASAP. Hopefully more characters will be revealed.
