Original article [Sat 11th Dec, 2021 07:05 GMT]: French indie developer Midgar Studio - in partnership with publisher Dear Villagers - has announced its JRPG-inspired game Edge of Eternity is coming to the Nintendo Switch as a cloud version release on 23rd February next year.
Here's a bit about this project that originally began life as a Kickstarter and also features the work of the legendary JRPG composer Yasunori Mitsuda (Xenoblade Chronicles & Chrono Trigger):
"In a world torn asunder, the people of Heryon pursue a desperate war against a mysterious invader. As this conflict opposing magic and technology grows to cataclysmic proportions, a new threat emerges from the battlefield. Wage epic turn-based battles as you follow Daryon and Selene in their quest to find a cure to the all-consuming Corrosion and save the world of Heryon."
- A Deep & Strategic Combat System: Outwit your enemies in epic turn-based tactical combat: use the environment to lure them into devious traps, outsmart and outflank them to inflict massive damage. Craft your gear and inset it with powerful crystals to unlock unique combinations of skills and power-ups.

Thanks I hate it
Seriously? This doesn't look much more demanding than MH Rise, BOTW, or Xenoblade. I don't understand why this has to be cloud-based on Switch.
I swear, that protag looks so much like Noctis that it hurts, at least in the 3d model. Also, screw cloud versions.
Here we go again, just don't bother, especially at the pricing models used on previous cloud games
I've been playing this on PC off and on for a while. I would label it as a very quirky little indy gem. Considering how small the team is I'm not at all surprised that they are doing a cloud release. They struggled with PC issues for quite some time and I haven't checked back to see if the Linux version issues ever did get ironed out. Any how, if you don't have a separate system to play this on I would definitely recommend checking out this version.
@JR150 It does look better than those 3 graphics wise.
Artstyle and graphics are different things (but I do think BOTW looks gorgeous because of its cell shaded graphics, it makes the game look better than it actually is without them)
Anyhow I they probably made this a cloud version due to not having a budget for a proper port, it would require too much work.
Because the game doesn't run that well on PC, I can tell you that much, so actually I wonder more why do they even bother with any Switch version, including cloud one at all.
@JR150 I love BotW but honestly, BotW didn't look half as good as this! Look at the detail on their faces and in the backgrounds. The floor is way more detailed too. I'm not a fan of cloud based, but it's undoubtedly a better looking game.
They will still push this cloud version if switch will have a had a better hardware?
@clianvXAi There's a rhetoric around cloud games being necessary due to Switch hardware limitations. Whilst it may be true in many cases, the honest truth and reality we live in is that cloud gaming is becoming more and more common. It will continue to grow and older gamers will continue to hate the concept but those younger generations will eat it up.
@clianvXAi probably not, but the Switch have to be more near PS5/XSX than under PS4/XBO.
These games should just not exist on current Switch at all especially when a cloud version is needed, Doom and Witcher 3 show the high price we have to pay for any Switch port, and those 2 are also older games too, not even starting about never games that are even heavier.
@nocdaes @Rayquaza2510
If that's the case, then they shouldn't have bothered putting it on Switch at all. A lot of people may end up getting this game without realizing that their internet needs to be top tier in order for it to function properly and they'll end up with a dysfunctional product that they can't get a refund on (because Nintendo's eShop policy sucks but that's an entirely separate issue).
Ahh shoot I thought it was gonna be a non cloud game. I tried it on Steam bec I got it real cheap and worth the risk of not running on my potato laptop. Unfortunately the game is poorly optimized despite the simple graphics so I guess cloud makes sense for this small studio.
@nocdaes
Our infrastructure simply isn't there yet. There are loads of countries where cloud gaming doesn't exist. Plus, nobody likes the fact that cloud games essentially are a license to a temporary product that will disappear forever. Look at Stadia--nobody talks about it anymore for that reason.
I don't see it taking off for another decade or two--not until the worldwide internet is up to par.
@JR150 "If that's the case, then they shouldn't have bothered putting it on Switch at all."
I keep saying that since the very first cloud based Switch game, companies should stop with impossible ports and especially cloud versions on the Switch.
If it can't run it, then it can't, very simple.
P.S. the internet doesn't need to be top tier for such stuff, by far not (I tried stadia for fun once at a friend's house with a 70/7 connection)
But the Switch it's WiFi module sucks, end of story because even the Ethernet adapter doesn't save the day so these games will always have a poor experience on the Switch.
@Rayquaza2510
Agreed. The Switch isn't exactly hurting for 3rd party support and doesn't need every single video game under the sun to be a success. Between the support it does get and the Nintendo exclusives, it's doing just fine without these extremely deceptive cloud games.
Perhaps I'll just listen to the soundtrack instead.
I wonder if any gamer out there enjoys these cloud versions of games. They're generally not received very well so why do they keep doing them lately? Probably because it's a lot easier than native porting. Hard pass either way, no cloud game is gonna come on my Switch except games with clouds and/or Cloud.
No thanks, I'll just grab it on PS4 like I originally planned to do. Not going to support this cloud nonsense.
If it can't be native then don't bother....it's a shame cloud is now becoming more popular and easy way out for developers to use cloud version look at Saber and panic button pushing the switch to its max getting games like Witcher 3, world War z, doom.....hell even the developer got dying light 1 on the switch so no excuses here.
Oh gross, a cloud version. It doesn't help that the game doesn't look that good either. I'll pass on this one
@JR150 My thoughts exactly, lol
@tonyp1987 and a very good port of Dying Light that stays above 30fps.. a miracle feat for an open world game
A cloud version of an indie game?
Then again, after a visual novel failed to produce an attempted Switch port and subsequently turned out to "recommend" 16 Gb RAM on Steam, few things will surprise me anymore. Except for one, the same question I ask about most of these cloud versions: why bother? We're a mere two or three estimated years away from the next generation, and some devs still spend time/resources offering products that the seeming majority of the userbase doesn't have the prerequisites to use even after paying money for?🤔
@Rayquaza2510 @JR150
As Services as Nvidias exists to just play any PC Game, i bet it is becoming pretty easy to contract such Company to make them run a streaming Version.
What it is a 70/7 connection ?
70 Mbits down with 7 up?
70 Mbits down with a Ping of 7
(other Countries, other ways to discribe Stuff)
A quick Search gave me this nice Tabula, it is in german but self explaining:

I cannot justify cloud purchases. No fungible proof that you own the media and Switch's internet structure is trash.
Uhh this game looks like it can be ported with some optimisation that keeps the quality the same but with better performance and smaller space. With next gen games i can understand they can only bring it trough cloud gaming. But this no.
If ported, yes id buy it day one. But on cloud no.
Cloud gaming on a Switch? Haha, no thank you.
I'm very happy to have a Xbox series s where I play remotely from my Xbox through internet or just Xcloud with Game Pass Ultimate ofcourse. Let me calculate, I paid more or less 100 bucks for 3 years.
I try not to come out with strong opinions but cloud versions for switch need to stop.
If you want to play these games spend the £20 on a Stadia Pro. You will have a better experience and you will have a 4K chromecast which is very useful.
@Longondo : Indeed that is the case. In fact, it is very likely that the Switch versions will be terminated (and one’s monies spent up in smoke) before the eShop closes its figurative doors. I’m pretty sure the eShop pages for these cloud games explicitly state that services can be terminated (albeit with 6 months notice, or thereabouts).
No thanks.
@JR150 Not really true, I live partially in the Netherlands and mainly in Germany. In the Netherlands I have 0 problems with cloud games or the connection overall. In Germany outside of my own home it sucks, even in big cities its wonky.
@JR150 It's true the infrastructure isn't there yet, but it has to start somewhere and cloud gaming (like it or not, and I don't!) is here to stay and will grow each year.
It's not a coincidence we're seeing non-mainstream (dare I say niche) titles going this route early on, as their target audience is more likely to adopt. That said, there have been some missteps and Square Enix with Kingdom Hearts really does stand out as a strange decision - but then again, perhaps it's a less demanding release...
I agree with you though, mainstream cloud releases (Mario, Halo, God of War et al) are a long way off. But they're definitely coming...
@nocdaes don’t know if you mean on Switch, but you can play Halo on cloud.
@Rayquaza2510 @JR150

While not totally against cloud gaming if it is part of a subscription service like PS Now or Game Pass as it offers a choice. I am against paying for a game that uses a closed of cloud system like this or even services that are streaming only with no way of having anything it offers stored locally since those services can just disappear as well as no way to access those games in future on a different service like what happened to OnLive.
@Yosher I love cloud gaming, unfortunately Nintendo doesn't have the infrastructure in place to effectively support it. They need to adopt a subscription model in line with PS now and Gamepass instead of charging the same price for a handful of old emulations.
@JR150 All cloud games have demo versions just for that reason. Stadia also only needs 35Mbps for 4k60fps, so on Switch I expect this to be less.
Here in Europe the average internet speed is 80 Mbps and in the US it's 200 Mbps apparently, which is higher than Japan, so I don't see where you're getting that the internet infrastructure is only good enough in Japan and South Korea...
I played the game on PC and ...I have two things to say.
I'm interested in jRPGs with amazing soundtracks but not in cloud gaming. Got to check if it's releasing on PC
Edit: yea. The above comment got me covered
Cloud again... If I wanted to "rent" cloud games (which I don't), I could get multiple months of game pass or PSNow for the money asked by Nintendo for a single game... Just don't get their strategy on this other than "well we do offer something"
Thanks for the heads up as I will now get this on the PlayStation 5 which isn't a cloud version
But seriously this game doesn't look like it needs to be cloud only, maybe they should give it another team to port as its seems they are too lazy to even try
Yeah, no. I was getting into it until I read "cloud gaming". I'm not hurting for games that actually run on the Switch.
No thanks, I like to "own" my games...
I just came here for the "I hate cloud games" comments. Was not disappointed
@DrkBndr "Here in Europe the average internet speed is 80 Mbps and in the US it's 200 Mbps apparently, which is higher than Japan" 200mb? Impossible! My friend lives in SC and the highest she can get is 50mbps. 200mbps is for cities, businesses and people who can afford it, which is a great minority.
There's no way this can't run natively on the Switch.
In for Yasunori Mitsuda, but please Lord have Japanese VO, or a mute option.
@StarPoint I was thinking that, but there are some pretty heavy stuff in the environments, like foliage. Might just be more cost effective to do a cloud version than a port.
Making this a cloud version isn't the best idea when you're trying to find an audience on Switch but good luck.
Nice Game. I will love to play it.
this will be dead on arrival, just like the cloud version of the KH games square absolutely refuses to properly port
@alexybubble I legit thought this article was about FFXV. When I saw the picture on the home page I was like "why is Prompto wearing a skirt?"
Lazy port job. Skip
@Medic_Alert You can’t blame the Switch for this cloud port. They took the more cost effective but also the least sales route. There have been more legitimate ambitious ports on the Switch then this game that didn’t go Cloud because they understand Cloud is DoA for Switch so why bother in the first place?
@Medic_Alert
Firstly YOU clearly don’t know based on what the Switch is objectively capable of and what games they already have ported considering you immediately blamed the system and not an indie dev incompetence.
Edge of Eternity is not a very intensive game to the point that the original PC release it had feedback how badly they overstated the “specs required”. Computers much below that ran the game fine without compromise. Switch port is far from an impossibility
Uh no this “hurdle” happened because they saw a more cost effective way to “port” a game nothing more. They cut corners. What they fail to realize is it’s also sales ineffective and they wasted whatever little resources they put in a Cloud version. There hasn’t been a single success story of a game on Switch Cloud all the way down to RE7 one of the first Switch cloud ports. Meanwhile there has been plenty of success stories for actual Switch ports.
People are not gonna throw money for a rental on an inferior cloud Nintendo infrastructure for a game that obviously was within Switch capabilities whether you like it or not.
I'm sure the game plays fine, but the graphics are a turn off for me. They're clearly trying to be realistic, but at the same time it looks like Final Fantasy XIV's graphics, except a bit worse. I understand that this is a smaller team, but should they really try a style like this without having a budget to back them up?
The main guy also looks exactly like Noctis from Final Fantasy XV.
Whatever part of the soundtrack Yasunori Mitsuda did I'm sure is phenomenal, but goodness gracious that voice acting is atrocious. Outside of Xenoblade, I just don't think anyone is willing to fund a great JRPG anymore. It's sad all these games have such low budgets.
@BlackenedHalo surprised the soundtrack isn't that good. I know in many games, Mitsuda only composes a track or two, but they're always awesome. Even subpar games like Legaia 2 and Sands of Destruction were partially saved by his music.
@Medic_Alert Irony that is bordering on satire at this point considering you been armchairing to make an excuse for indie dev incompetence
Once again it shows how out of touch you are with the core of your “argument”. Your once again listing the “official” PC specs for this game that is common knowledge for being greatly exaggerated. This game came out months ago on PC and people have been playing this fine on a potato PC. The game is a mid range indie turn based strategy game. This isn’t FFVII Remake. They can easily scale down environment details like most other Switch ports for this game to run fine.
BTW since it’s clear you lack sufficient knowledge, there are plenty of games on PC with posted specs of similar exaggerated levels of this game that got ported fine on Switch
Big seller overall? No. This game was never a big seller to begin with. Barely 200k last I checked that had lots of sales/low price for a decent budget indie game.
Bigger if it was ported properly vs Cloud? Yes easily. You are out of your mind if you think Cloud rentals for this game on Switch would be anywhere near the numbers of traditional port sales for Switch. Plenty of third party ports did fine on Switch without having to go Cloud.
Proof for there being no success for Cloud games on Switch? Is this a joke? There hasn’t been a single published success story by developers in interviews/company fiscal year breakdown about how Cloud rentals sold since they started this. Even Stadia was a flop and that has a better infrastructure then Nintendo Cloud. This isn’t Gamepass.
If it was a success they would be bragging about it publicly and put way more effort in porting more games to Cloud on Switch which they haven’t.
Meanwhile developers says all the time if it did well on Switch when ported properly away from Cloud such as this.
https://nintendoeverything.com/cd-projekt-red-says-the-witcher-3-saw-excellent-sales-on-switch/
Again you are blaming the hardware for this game which is far from accurate. This isn’t a high end AAA videogame where nobody would care if they Cloud ported it.
It’s another KHs scenario is what you fail to understand where indie dev take the cheap route [probably has no knowledge on how to properly handle Switch ports too] while failing to understand that Nintendo Cloud sales doesn’t make it worth it. There are more impressive games that got ported then this game.
Would play in a heartbeat, but cloud? Never.
Post 69! I tell you what, a cloud version? If they pay me five bucks I promise I'll check it out. It looks pretty cool.
@Savage_Joe That's what this site says: https://www.speedtest.net/global-index/united-states#fixed
The average is 200 mbps, but the median seems to be 130 mbps, which is still high enough. The US is big tho, so per state it would have very different speeds.
I would like to see figures for cloud based games on the Switch. I don't like them either but people have to be buying them somewhere because why would developers keep putting them on?
I mean surely if there was no money to be made, word would have gotten around among developers that the Switch isn't a good place for cloud games, that obviously hasn't happened.
indies going cloud? They really don't want money I guess
animation studios like Fortiche proved that french design doesn't have to rip off anything and is capable of creating a very unique look and feel that totally works within the realm of mainstream animation and character design. So why they try to imitate something that it clearly isn't is beyond me.
@Medic_Alert
im not really too much in the know when it comes to game development but this is the kind of thing i was thinking of, since from what i gather porting can be very finicky, i imagine sometimes it could even be harder than building a game from scratch for the system.
again im not a dev so its more from what i gather but it does seem like quite a few times its some of the smaller studios that can have more trouble with optimization which is why games like a hat in time have trouble.
While i absolutely cant stand cloud gaming i can see why more devs would end up going down that route for switch especially with the newer console generation making the gap between nintendos hardware and its competitors bigger than ever.
thats personally why i am hoping we do end up seeing a more powerful switch, since i love the idea but the hardwares age is definitely showing, though there seems to be a kind of aversion with some people when improved specs are mentioned, its telling when it seems like you hear the terms "4k, 120fps" or some other exaggeration more from people who are against the idea of more powerful hardware, when more often than not more powerful hardware is brought up when a game is stuggling to maintain 30fps, or in this case doesnt get a native port.
for me as ive mentioned in another topic im hoping that the next nintendo platform ends up being closer to the DS>3ds jump, using the same concept with more powerful hardware and some additions, rather than completely going back to the drawing board, especially when this gen showed that nintendo can still have some unique crazy ideas (mario kart home circuit, ring-fit, labo etc) with relatively "safe" base hardware (the switch itself being pretty much the "handheld with tv out" idea only refined greatly)
@JR150 that is entirely the consumers fault then. On cloud versions of any game, doesn't matter the platform, it states in the game's description that a stable internet connection is required. They even provide a demo so you can see if it runs well via your internet provider, which it also gives a big disclaimer before you start said demo.
People are trying to make it seem like these developers are trying to scam customers, which they aren't.
Why can't these cloud games go on the NSO expansion pack instead or something? :/
I still don't understand why this is a cloud game. Looks like it could easily run on the Switch.
Thanks, I don't care!
Reminder for what?? I saw CLOUD and immediately lost interest.
I have GB Fibre Optic but it doesn't matter. If I see the effing word Cloud I'm NOT interested, EVER 😡
Not angry at you Kate just the people that keep pushing this rubbish.
cloud gaming is like cloudy weather, they both suck
Great game whom's cloud version is trash. Top to bottom.
@Savage_Joe They're going to keep coming my friend as long as these people keep trying to push this BS.
@JR150 Laziness. Not, resource allocation. Not, lack of talent or passion. Laziness.
@Rayquaza2510 I'd say it's about on par with the Xenoblade games. Especially 1. It's really not a bad looking game just flip the cloud version.
@nocdaes I would say that in indivduation this game has some features that trump the aforementioned, but as an overall cohesive package, BOTW beats this game out as a graphical showcase.
Ughhhhhh stop with the cloud games.
We made it clear we don’t like them so stop doing cloud versions!
Insert puke emoji...
I only know about this game due to the switch version but I hate to say that I will have to pick this up elsewhere if I get it. May just see if the OST is for sale and call it a day.
Played it on Pc awhile back. Game can easily be run on Switch if they optimized for it, but another case of lazy port effort for the platform
"cloud versions" are going to keep happening when developers try to port their projects to outdated hardware. It was already on the way out when it released but Nintendo refusing to update their hardware is going to start hurting them the longer this goes on. Once again the steam deck is looking like the device to get for optimal 3rd party handheld gaming...
Got the game on playstation 5 and whilst the gameplay is fun, the character models and animation is really poor.
I see absolutely no reason this game can't be on the switch physically
@JR150 Laziness for the mulah!
Cloudgaming needs to die. Even under best circumstances it still sucks and is another step into "you don't own your games". No. Just no.
Other things that need to die: NFTs. I personally know two people who make big cash trading NFTs and I could get in on it easily, but it's just so ridiculous.
"Hey Plebs, we ran out of ressources we can extort and abuse, so we create digital crap you can spend your hard earned cash on."
Fun.
My switch stays free of cloud version games. If I can’t play it on the go, I can just play it on ps
Ideally literally nobody would buy cloud games until the developers got the message
Will check out the demo later. Good price too. Looks interesting.
Played this game for about 15 minutes on my Xbox before uninstalling it.
TRASH. AVOID.
I tried this on Game Pass. Its not great.
And it also shouldn't be a cloud game. Its not a particularly cutting edge production
As soon as cloud is mentioned the "launched on switch" statement become void. It launched in a program window that runs it almost as bad as a KVM would run your dirtbike. Moving on.
I do have to wonder how many on here are actual game designers and how many more are arm chair quarterbacks talking and making nonsense. If so called real game designers - tell us whom you really are. If not stop making baseless informations that you have no knowledge whatsoever. My internet NA experiences is you get the internet the ISP gives you not the other way around. Also the Switch wifi is only good as the router it connects to. So stop blaming Switch wifi that's a poor excuse when you use poor wifi routers and should be blaming yourself for it. NA has internet Deserts and not everyone can afford the sky high ISP prices.
So Cloud is in this version of the game! Excellent! Will there be a Tifa version launched on switch at some point?
It's as if Square Enix is TRYING to make the Switch player base hate them.
I honestly don't even understand the point for this one, unlike Kingdom Hearts which is popular and will sell even if it's streamed on a Gameboy Advance with a special adapter.
Cloud version = no buy.
Not unless I know I can play this 10 years from now.
If it was through Steam I'd be more open to it because my Steam library is still alive and kicking.
I can't believe more comments aren't about the demo for this game. It's literally a two minute interaction between two protagonist (I assume) characters who have a mindless duel to show you how battle works... then the demo ends. WHAT A JOKE! I refuse to support a game that does something this ridiculous.
