E3 Is Going To Be Digital-Only Again This Year, Thanks To COVID-19

The never-ending plague strikes again…

Considering how garbage E3 was last year I honestly couldn't care less.

I’m pretty sure this is a cover considering they declined to sign off on a contract with the LACC back in November.

I often find myself wondering if E3 is even relevant anymore.
Nintendo popularized the "Direct" format of delivering news via their own digital pressers, and in a pandemic world other publishers have taken that format and done well with it. It's a proven method of getting news to fans, and really calls into question the viability of big in-person venues.

Would just like some news on Prime 4 and don't really care how it gets delivered.

Can't be worse than last years E3, right? Right?

I would rather to see a list of upcoming games in words with one screenshot displayed so i will only care to getting know about upcoming kiddie / cartoonish games for kids from the list.

It's easier to not spend much, if any, money on a physical presentation Full of "hip" slang and video relative to anything but games and blame a pandemic that seems... Oddly choosy when it impacts gatherings.

Blizzcon, E3 and anything else of the sort plan on keeping like this forever. It's easier for them to blame something more fitting for the excuse as to why.

@CharlieGirl Whether it's relevant or not doesn't really matter that much in my eyes. Without covid, it can still be fun to go to such an event if nothing else. The atmosphere can be great. I never went to E3 before but I did go to a similar event years ago where games could be tried out early (no announcements there though).

Outside of that, I think it's still a fine platform, because if nothing else for online viewers, it at least 90% guarantees a Nintendo Direct in June among other announcement showcases. Whether that alone is still relevant... probably not. But when coupled with the event itself there, I think it's fine. Just sucks that Covid is making a mess of it all.

Personally I'm still someone who looks forward to E3 regardless. But I also wouldn't really miss it that much if it went away because of said online irrelevance. So long as they keep the announcements rolling in fine either way. I just like having a more set date at least once a year where they show us stuff.

Does anyone need E3 anymore? Would make more sense for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft to hold their own showcases, Directs, whatever, at several occasions throughout a year. More trailers, demos and online betas can only be a good thing

I don't really see the issue. The vast majority of people don't physically attend the showcases anyway, and it not being a physical event means they can get on with the streams more quickly, and we have fewer embarrassing stage spectacles to sift through. Watching The Game Awards this year reminded me of why I'm glad E3 is all-digital these days.

Mildly disappointing but unsurprising. Honestly, outside of Nintendo and a handful of games outside their control, I found last year's show VERY underwhelming. Capcom wasn't bad but could have focused on newer titles more. Square Enix was just disappointing outside of meme ammo. Didn't bother watching much else.

I hope they can learn from last year’s mistakes of miscommunication, hours of filler and lack of interactivity, but I am doubtful.

Summer Games Fest also has its own issues. Last year’s really felt like a fizzle and really just 1 good night of showcases and then the Tribeca stuff. But it overall felt like a step below 2020’s consistent announcements.

I'll be curious how CES turns out, as they kept it in person this year. From everything I've heard, omnicron is more contagious, but also much more mild, so in a way, this could be the one that makes the pandemic turn into an endemic and actually gets us over the hump. Hey, it's a new year and I'm going the glass half full route.

Honestly, I only really read non-Nintendo news after E3, so this doesn't impact me too much, but seeing as how E3 is, from an outsider's perspective, a celebration of all of gaming for that year, it kind of bums me out that it won't be seen by others. But, as someone who is currently struggling with COVID and seeing a massive outbreak across my small city, it's honestly very necessary for our survival that we are careful with what events we allow open. We DO NOT need E3 to be open, it runs just fine without people.

Not surprising, either way though, I'm looking forward to seeing what game announcements, Nintendo will have planned for the event.

Some other sites are saying they may not even have that this year.

Darn. I was looking forward to watching a stream of adverts being shown to a bunch of people in an auditorium on YouTube, and now instead I’ll have to watch a stream of adverts directly on YouTube. Can life get any worse?

Sure the vaccine doesn't make one immune from the virus, but it sure as hell does lessen the chances of you catching, and it also lessens the effects of the disease.

And since this is a gaming site... I have a analogy... for everyone... The vaccine and a mask is like using Reflect and Light Screen in a Pokemon battle... it isn't as good protection like the move Protect, but it sure as hell does help cut down the amount of damage you take from attacks. @QueenKittenWrite I read in a medical journal that’s been around since the SARS variant that wearing a mask reduces the distance that breath particles can travel through the air. The density of particles mattered, more dense particles could travel as far as 21 feet from a cough when the face was uncovered. The masks were found to reduce the distance the particles traveled to around 6 feet or less, which is the main reason that face coverings are recommended. But yeah keep believing whatever conspiracy theory websites you keep reading lol

@QueenKittenWrite Cloth masks that are 3-layers, properly fitted, and worn correctly have an efficacy of about 76% according to lab studies. These numbers are variable because most masks don’t create a proper seal. Two people wearing masks are more efficient than one. Is it perfect, no - Neither is the flu vaccine, which has a similar infection rate (60-70% efficiency depending on the year). None of this diminishes their impact overall - any percentage of protection is better than none.

Even without COVID, I think it should stick to the online format

The situation is more practical than that; it has to do with disease prevention, which is everyone’s responsibility in an organized society. We can’t just put it behind us and hope it sorts itself out...we have to each do our part in trying to promote hygienic, daily practices.

@Yorumi I don't believe any human rights are being lost in this process. You would have to link me to articles talking about it, at the very least. I see and hear a lot of people complaining that their rights are being taken, but I haven't seen evidence of any rights being advanced upon. Wearing a safety mask and getting a booster shot isn't downplaying any human rights, but getting sick because you chose not to protect yourself means that you are diminishing your own effectiveness.

I know E3 is not the most needed thing, but I love knowing when where going to get some game related news, its ether that or Shadow drops from here and there.

And to your anecdotal evidence: I have loads of collegues going through covid old and young. No one died. Two went through intensive care. For my family and friends: no one has lasting damage, most have had covid.

If you're paying attention even loosely you notice how the narrative is getting harsher and more divisive. This is not good. And not based on evidence or proper reasoning even.

This just means that Nintendo will easily win E3 again this year. Their Nintendo Direct alone would trump all presentations. All they had to do this year is show us Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4 gameplay in all their glory and victory is assured. They could also throw us a port of Xenoblade Chronicles X, a new Golden Sun, and an HD remastered of Super Mario Galaxy 2 for the icing on the cake too.

No big deal to me, E3 hasn't been the same for years now, glad I went and saw it myself in person in 2017 but digital events are becoming the norm anymore.

E3 was already dying before Corona. Mark my words, there will never be a physical E3 again. Other similar tech shows will pop up, sure, but this is about saving cash. There was rumors the about E3 going digital long before corona anyway.

Not a huge loss, in my opinion. As an introvert who hardly leaves the home, the lockdown aspect of COVID honestly hasn't phased much. Not to make light of the loss if life, which is tragic. But if anything good has come from this mess, it's shown how convenient it can be to work from home. I hope when all this is over, companies will allow their employees to keep doing it that way if they want. You get to stay home with your wife and kids, you don't have to commute, you don't have to move halfway across the country, you don't have to get dressed unless you have a ZOOM meeting. Ironically, progress in technology has come so far, it's enabling us to go back to the old days before cars--when couples could be self-sufficient at home. Instead of growing their own food, they can just have it shipped through Amazon.

E3 could really take advantage of this by having downloadable demos of upcoming games instead of in-person kiosks. That way even the people who don't get to go to E3 normally would get to play the latest games before they come out. Maybe even charge people like 5 bucks to play a small portion of Breath of the Wild months ahead of its release. I think that'd be pretty reasonable and way cheaper than a plane ticket and a convention pass. But they didn't to anything like that last year, so they probably won't this year. Shame.

I'm genuinely getting annoyed about how many media outlets are causing people to treat E3 like it's have an identity crisis, when big companies like Microsoft and Nintendo openly choose to continue to support it.

It's true that the statistics are decreasing as the years go by, and hosting something there is becoming a lot more strict (ie: refer to Geoff's departure) and expensive (probably why Sony chose to leave). However, the fact remains that it's the time of the year when gamers often get the most excited because it is one of the few times of the year where most publishers and developers showcase their projects.

E3 has transitioned into a convention, and I don't see a problem with that. If we can have Summer Games Fest, Gamescom, Tokyo Game Show, and The Game Awards, then there is certainly no reason for E3 to end.

I probably would've taken a step further by saying those who aren't able to get the vaccines are dying as a result of it whike others are choosing not to get vaccinated, letting those unused vaccines expire and go to waste which end up causing more people to fall ill and die. I don't know how fun it would be to go nowadays with publishers having their own digital events, just depends on how many booths are set up, trying games before anyone else is part of the fun.

@Dirty0814 You're correct. The vaccines don't prevent infection or transmission. It was hoped they did, and the early days looked promising, and then it quickly changed as vaccine effect wanes. While they still might reduce your infectious period a little, that's offset by the more aggressive social behaviour of vaccinated people and, due to vaccines reducing symptoms so well, they are devastating silent super spreaders. Whereas a non vaccinated person will more likely get symptoms and so would immediately isolate. You only need look at Australia with 95% fully vaccinated and cases have exploded. So the vaccine message now is really about personal protection, especially if in a vulnerable category.

@DomGC No offense, I'm on the opposite side of you here. I am fully vaccinated and yes I wear my mask but I also live in Melbourne, Australia and the conditions we have been put through here are ridiculous.

Sensitive topic but I lost a close friend to suicide and none of the people here have been in a good mental state over the years. People lost money, jobs, families, all because some people in suits decided that this virus is the deadliest thing ever when the reality is that it isn't. Not to mention all of the political drama that went over here with politicians being exposed for taking advantage to make serious profits off the pandemic as well as the police force taking advantage of the situation to abuse people and put themselves on an egotistical power trip.

I agree with the sentiment that many, MANY people die every day, week, month and year. Destroying others' beliefs and ways of life because of this is messed up. People who don't want to jab themselves with a needle are people who are exercising free will and freedom of speech. If somebody is genuinely at risk with bad body conditions as is then I suggest them to distance themselves if they do care about these things.

We spent nearly a year in full lockdown where you weren't even allowed outside without a good reason. Just because whatever country you're in has it good and you seem to only need to put on masks for "5 minutes" doesn't mean the rest of the world is the same way.

@Threebcisum Declining medical assistance when you need it is a far cry from vaccinating yourself to avoid needing medical assistance my guy. As I said I've been vaccinated but I support a world that has free choice which is what people pre-dating both you and I were fighting to accomplish.

Should be like this regardless. Nintendo was smart to move away from physical/on stage showcases years ago. The worst E3 shows in recent memory have been bogged down with on stage cringe and fluff.

Technically that's only half true. They still did Nintendo Treehouse showcases physically, immediately after each Direct, and they often ran the longest out of every other booth/conference at E3.

Some people refuse to get the vaccine because they don’t think it works. Others support permanent lockdowns because they don’t think the vaccine works. Seems to be two sides of the same coin.

Still, live E3 long outlived its useful life. Having it online would’ve made sense even in 2019.

As others have said, the vast, VAST majority of people who watch E3 do so from home on their device of choice. All digital means not a whole lot to most of who E3 is tailored toward in the first place. Besides... I only ever watch the Nintendo Direct anyway, and you don't need E3 to have those 🤣

I agree with you that this sort of thing shouldn't get so heated, even though this is a sensitive subject. But I try to be respectful of others when chiming in on controversial topics, and as far as I'm concerned, that's all I can really do. Sure, maybe I'm not gonna change anybody's mind, but I'm also not responsible for anybody's hate comments. Their true colors would show themselves eventually, anyways--look how needlessly heated discussions about Paper Mario can get. I think the best thing to do is lead by example and just not get hostile like them. For the record, seatbelt analogy wasn't even me picking a side, it was just an observation. E3 wasn't relevant before this whole Covid thing.... why would we care now. I really only care for Nintendo Directs and honestly not even half of them.

That said, at some point we just need to move on with our lives. And some of ya'll (on both sides) are painting with some pretty broad strokes.

@Yorumi I mean, that’s all fine and good, but most government officials have a better overview of the world than a rugged individualist, simply due to them having access to more information. I think it’s insane that you believe a vaccine is a “forced medical procedure,” that’s probably the craziest thing I’ve ever heard anyone say. Especially when the heart of the matter is not control of people, but control of a disease. It’s just how maligned people’s thoughts have become. Government always evil, government never does anything for the common good. Must be depressing to be a government official. They’re people just like you and me. Nobody is above that.

Also, there’s only so far free choice should go in a society. By having to go to the IC you directly impact others. And the disease is transmittable. So by not getting vaccinated you show you do not care about yourself and others. And you negatively impact others.

What I do miss about E3 is a bit like what I do miss about gaming magazines and television. They are all part of a different era where information was even more gated.

So it is probably pointless to continue on with old school E3, whatever the reason for not oganising one this year.

I meant sitting in their car with the windows rolled up while wearing a mask or heck three masks as Dr. fauci would suggest. They seem afraid of the open air. If it were possible I'd suggest they leave the planet as breathing earths air even 400 miles from the nearest person might kill you. If you're that freaked out you need professional help.

@Yorumi The fact that you can type all that without getting arrested by an agency that polices your online posts proves that you live in a good country, and that you are being overly negative towards the situation. I’m assuming from your post history that you play video games? Just another freedom you have, and I’m sure whichever country you live in isn’t policing that, either.

But having to wear a protective face covering in public and get a shot means corruption/prove you’re vaccinated indicates corruption? Please. Your profile states you live in USA. So do I. You’re being so insufferably blind to the amount of freedom and safety and opportunity you have living here. This is one of the only countries in the world where someone can show up with a few dollars in their pocket and turn that into a good life.

It’s amazing how blind the US is to the sheer amount of freedoms we have, when compared to third world countries, communist countries, and dictatorships. Stop whining about face coverings and shots when you live in one of the safest and most well developed countries in the world.

I live in the US too, and I love this country, flaws and all, because the pros of living here far outweigh the cons. I’m not living in a European country, so you can’t take advantage of me having to believe you on merit alone. I actually live here, and I am thriving for it. I don’t take you seriously for one second when we live in a place with an incredible amount of order. Yes, there are corrupt officials, but you are forgetting that there are people in our government that attempt to block corruption. You are also taking for granted that there are tons of emergency services at the touch of your finger tips to save your life at any given moment, that there are numerous roadways under constant repair to maintain traffic flow, and that we can almost be guaranteed to be able to walk outside without literal war occurring in your front yard.

The problem with Americans is that our freedoms are so normalized to us that we take them for granted. Have you ever met someone from a country with actual corruption? A friend of mine that moved here from Cuba years ago was literally on their knees crying their eyes out when I brought them to Baskin Robbins. They were in shock at how easily they could just walk into a place and get ice cream, because in Cuba it was only available to the ultra wealthy, at the time. We have it SO GOOD here, the minor corruption we face from some officials is small potatoes.

It doesn’t matter what virus or variant we’re talking about—what matters are the aerosols the virus is attached to. Smaller aerosols can easily penetrate through cloth masks, making them useless against this and any other viral disease. It’s basic science.

@RedWing215 So then don't stand directly in front of people when they breath, my sources say you should be fine. Also, basic science dictates that the face coverings aren't designed to completely stop aerosols from penetrating. They are designed to minimize the distance that said aerosols travel through the air, which is the main concern in daily life. So you socially distance and wear a face covering, which was the recommendation from day 1. Also, do you wear a ventilator that completely seals your face? If not, I'm not convinced you are as worried about it as you seem.

A standard cloth mask allows 90% of exhaled aerosols to disperse into the air. And considering the huge viral loads of recent COVID variants, that means that the mask literally does you no good—it’s just a placebo. If someone IS infected, and they are breathing, they are spreading the virus, and a cloth mask won’t stop it. The only surefire way to keep from contracting COVID is to literally live out the rest of your life sheltered, and that’s no way to live.
