Wellll, wellllll, wellllllllll. It looks like every single games journalist and influencer was right after all, with a few hundred caveats. The much-rumoured Switch Pro has turned out to be a sliiiightly underwhelming new Nintendo Switch model with a bigger OLED screen, a hole for the internet to go into, and a horrible name that we're going to have to type out every single time we talk about it. Ugh.
But also, it comes in white, and the toaster dock is more slick! We didn't predict that. Or did we? Maybe we did. We've been trying to find new things to say about this years-long rumour, after all; we probably even predicted it would have Amazon Alexa integration at one point.
But the internet is unsurprisingly already on the meme treadmill, pumping out reactions, goofs, and jokes about the Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) just minutes after its announcement. Let's take a look.
Hey, that looks like [X]!
Humans love recognising things, and the reveal of the OLED Switch is no different.
It looks kinda like the worst Liquorice Allsort.
It looks like Cruella De Vil.
Or a toaster, maybe.
Actually, it sort of looks like... every other console of this generation. Why is white in vogue? Everyone knows all gamers have horrible sticky cheese dust hands.
Too little, too late
Even as a Nintendo website, we can admit that Nintendo can be a little... behind the times, let's say. As PlayStation and Xbox constantly race against each other to have ten more pixels and even more colourful colours, with rendered faces so lifelike that you'll accidentally fall in love with Cortana or Crash Bandicoot, Nintendo is satisfied just making Mario games that run at 30FPS and 720P. Who cares if you're having fun, right?
But, ah... a LAN port? In 2021? Really, Ninty?
And, wait, haven't we been asking for Bluetooth for a while now?
And should we be worried that they didn't mention updating the notoriously drifty Joy-Cons... at all?
Nintendo has no idea how people play games
Why are all the Nintendo Switch adverts like "I play Pikmin on a basketball court under an overpass" and "I love to play Smash Bros in my million-dollar NYC apartment that I live in alone"? Let's be honest, we're all playing Animal Crossing in our pants on the sofa, in the most unflattering positions that are definitely not good for our spines. Stop making video games look sexy and cool, Nintendo!
Did Nintendo delay the release?
There were SO many rumours that the new Switch would be announced at E3, and yet... nothing happened. Did Nintendo hear all the hype for a 4K Switch and dash back to the office to change their E3 Direct, just because they knew they'd never live up to the hype? We can only speculate. And speculate we shall!
The announcement was a little... strangely timed, no? Almost like they didn't want us to notice it? Who announces things on a random Tuesday?
This reminds me of a Simpsons quote
No matter what the viral news story is, there's always a Simpsons quote to match. This time, it's Malibu Stacy:
https://twitter.com/ThatRetro/status/1412402693101006854
You only need to see one of these tweets to get it. It's all the same joke.
...Also, a quote from The Office
Ditto.
It's a bird, it's a plane, it's a... PlayStation Vita?
It has not gone unnoticed that the new Switch is strikingly similar to PlayStation's underappreciated handheld. We even pointed out that the Switch seems like a worthy successor to the Vita earlier this week, what with all the visual novels coming out this year.
For some, the Vita might actually be... gasp... better:
https://twitter.com/luulubuu/status/1412412124161249289
https://twitter.com/dialacina/status/1412402002198470661
Shoot, maybe we should just get our Vita out of storage.
Actually, it's fine
Actually, the new Switch is fine. Especially if you primarily play handheld. Chill, y'all.
Also, it's actually a relief for developers!
Chris, what?
Occasional NL writer Chris Scullion wasn't reminded of the Vita, Liquorice Allsorts, or Cruella De Vil — no, for Scully, the obvious reference was teen chorister Aled Jones from 1980s Christmas movie, The Snowman.
We can meme, too
...Does it count if it's from the NL Twitter account? Yes. Please like us.
What now?
Our lives are so empty without Switch Pro rumours. Anyone fancy making a new rumour? Breath of the Wild 2 is set in space? The next Mario game is in 4D? Metroid Prime 4 might actually come out this decade? Ha, let's not get too wild!
What has been your favourite reaction emerging from this out-of-nowhere announcement? Let us know in the comments!

Nintendo Life Twitter: How do you do fellow kids?
To high of expectations, Granted I'm still kinda meh about even after lowering mine.
Also I'm kinda surprised about the price TBH. It cost almost as much as the normal switch.
Removed - unconstructive
Ugh, I think I've had my fair share of hot takes for the day.
Love the one claiming the Vita is better than the Switch because of themes and folders. Yeah, because we buy gaming consoles/handhelds not for the games but for the UI. 🙄
😴 nice for new adopters but not much worth upgrading for. Doubtful a pro will be released now as it almost seems unnecessary. Will hold out for switch pro 4k 😅
It's funny. This is a gift to the handheld players of the world. Meanwhile, docked players are so mad. The duality of the Nintendo fanbase
Anakin: Nintendo just announced the Switch OLED
Padme: Surely that will kill the Switch Pro rumors
Anakin:...
Padme: It will kill the Pro rumors, right?
You forgot about @JonComms review copy!
@Bobb I honestly can't believe the Switch Pro rumors are still going, despite them revealing the console in question. People are in literal denial from what it seems.
@Bobb @KryptoniteKrunch LOL.
@1ofUs TBH I would still want A OLED switch lite, I mean this new switch is cool and all, but its so big! I would like a OLED ver because then I wont need to hold this big old device in my hands.
LOL.
Waiting on some good "Dom Switch family" memes. Seems inevitable.
@VoidofLight Thats what I was thinking, can they like just stop! there rumors are the reason were in this mess.
I went to ALDI and came home and a new switch was announced at like 2pm. What??!!
Even without the supposed 4K docked support and DLS rumours, it’s very underwhelming.
Yeah I also need to get my Vita out of storage so I can dock it and play Mario Odyssey on it. Oh wait, the Vita is not close to being the same as a Switch.
The lack of Bluetooth is the biggest blow for me.
That new screen looks great but not as great as family
For all the people with butt hurt feelings....stop believing everything your read and hear on the internet and you wouldn't have had your sensitive feelings hurt..I don't believe rumors and leaks I wait for Nintendo to announce them then I believe it lol.its really not that hard
"Translation: my next switch game will run equally badly across all switches"
A bad workman always blames his tools...
> New ethernet port
Congratulations Nintendo you finally made it to 2006
Lazy lazy lazy Nintendo, both upgrade console wise and in house studio AAA games wise.
They lured me in at the beginning in 2017 and a bit beyond. But now and for a long while they have nothing to over me.
I buy nothing of there’s now and have sold my Switch.
Will I come running back, maybe BOTW 2, Mario odyssey 2, Mario kart 9, Bayonetta 3.
They just take so long to do anything nowadays, apart from make remakes I played on the wii and wii u.
Love the meme roundup, had a good chuckle. You should do it more often! Re OLED Switch - meh.
@Clyde_Radcliffe I'm pretty sure it's a joke.
Not gonna lie, if I had a front hallway that could potentially be me ready to leave, waiting for girlfriend to be ready so we could actually leave.
Looks like I’ll just keep playing my OG Switch and Switch Lite. Zero reason to upgrade.
WAit is that THE Wil Overton???
You know you guys. I think if it wasn't for the leaks, we still would have found it worthless, but at least we wouldn't have been hyped for nothing.
Eh gamer outrage of the week. The system isn't appealing to me (unless my fat switch meets and untimely demise) but it's always relatively entertaining to see people get so bent out of shape for such insignicant things. Gamers continue to be the worst part of gaming lol.
This article was a fun little read!
It’s no good giving Nintendo a powerful 4K dream machine to develop for.
They have not got the numbers in studio developers to make the graphical games for a switch in house as it is.
Imagine them making a Zelda or Mario of say HZDFW or FH5 graphical fidelity and quality.
It would take them tens to turn any game around.
Why do people care about Bluetooth Audio?
The extra RAM comments are hilarious! It's a games console, not a PC.
Nintendo has 0 clue about its user base. Everything from console to online capabilities. The meme about the hallway was priceless haha
I mean that one about Bluetooth has a point, plus only just using OLED screens and having an Ethernet port just shows how far Nintendo are behind in terms of tech
Ah, these are good memes, especially the toaster.
Am I the only poor person who breathed a sigh of relief!?!?
You can simply call it 'Switch OLED',
Or simply 'the new Standard Switch'. because rest assured, that's what it will eventually become.
@RadioShadow Obviously you don’t use headphones regularly. I have to use a crazy long cord and wrap it around stuff to keep it from accidentally yanking the console out of the dock. Tabletop mode is awkward as well.
At least use a meme with a recognizable Cruella de Vil.
@LillianC14 yeah!
@benchan happy gaming
It makes sense people are disappointed since the rumor sources were more legit and not from some random person on 4chan. This looks more aline to a Switch XL than a Switch Pro honestly.
Just a friendly reminder that Nintendo is doing its own thing entirely and pretending the other market doesn’t exist.
At least they still make great games
@RadioShadow 4 GB ram for a console is pretty middling in these days.
Hahahahahah some of those memes where really funny. 🤣🤣🤣
Nintendo brought this upon themselves.
@RadioShadow because having no cables is really nice.
Love the memes.
@Darkyoshi98 Perhaps it's not that people listen to internet rumours and more that people still expect Nintendo to actually make a decision that makes sense, as if their business decisions are being made from the same planet and with technological knowledge at least on par with average person on the street. I can't wait for Nintendo to discover how bluetooth audio works, in 2040.
@LillianC14 there's a name I haven't heard in a while. Still got some Super Play magazines with his work.
Is the Hyper Play magazine still going?
I do play a bit more on the TV than I used to, but I still only have a 1080p set. The new screen sounds pretty sweet and, like Kate, my OG model is dying and could crap out at any moment. It's real pricy in Canadabux but I need a new unit.
If the PS Vita is so much better than why did it went backwards? Instead of OLED it went with LCD in the end. It's kinda like Sony themselves, if PSP is so much better than why abandon disc for cartridges? Makes you think does it?
"Everyone knows all gamers have horrible sticky cheese dust hands."
I'll have you know I don't handle my consoles and controllers unless my hands are clean, TYVM.
As for that Reddit quote:
"Can't wait to get home and play Pokemon in my hallway!"
I feel attacked. ( )
@Snatcher how is it worthless?
I hope to get one since alone the Monster Hunter or Co. cost more and can’t be found anywhere.
@Scrubicius I'm just talking about how people would have talked about the switch.
@themakyr haha relax my friend I was joking. Have a good one
Fans: "Make Switch more like PS5!"
Nintendo: "We're on it"
I'm OK with the smaller iteration. I've been holding out on upgrading for the better battery.
The bigger question is why did they announce it 3 months before release?
@RadioShadow BT audio would be great for docked play, instead of having an impractical, long headphone cord stretching across the room. Alas, this newer model shows how little they actually care about docked mode anyways.
Lol, Nintendo are doomed, they've only sold 85,000,000 Switches so far, what do they even know about gaming? So out of touch, it's sad really.
I can barely see the difference in the screen size.
@TheFrenchiestFry og Xbox had it in 2001.
Yeah, the Internet can be pretty rude with its reactions. I once had a brief conversation with the Internet, and it was rather insolent. I think we should beat the Internet up to teach it a lesson.
Here’s the thing missing from all of these:
There’s a global chip shortage, people!!! Even if Nintendo had the 4K Switch all ready to go (a coin toss whether they do), there is no place that could manufacture enough chips to make the launch anything less than a disaster. What they did enables the QoL upgrades that were obviously missing from the original, while giving them some breathing room to produce new chips when the market is a little better.
@1ofUs As someone who pretty much plays handheld only, personally this is far from a 'gift'. ☠️☠️☠️ I can't see myself getting this unless somehow my current og Switch spontaneously combusts.
The 6.2in screen is more than enough for a 'handheld' and them blatantly ignoring stuff like natural bluetooth audio and the joy con issue(both of which would have caught my interest as a handheld person)... yeah; they're charging $50 more for something that hardly fixes anything.
At the least this thing could've naturally been priced exactly what we pay now and caused the og model to drop.
Critiquing the fact that it was a surprise reveal is so nonsensical to me. You know the backlash would’ve been MUCH worse if Nintendo had so much as mentioned an announcement date for something new beforehand, letting people get their hopes up and all.
No one would have predicted a 2D metroid as the game marketed to show off a Switch upgrade. What is this timeline?
the malibu stacey hat was the first thing I thought of when I heard the news. mixed feelings over other people thinking the same thing.
I think this was a smart choice, and it is definitely an indicator that Switch’s life span in the market isn’t over yet. I’ve been wanting to upgrade my switch (since it’s now 4 years old), but making a Switch pro with 4K and better ram/cpu would divide their userbase. Kind of like how the New 3DS had exclusive games that sorta failed… I think the only missed opportunity here is Bluetooth audio support. Other than that, this is exactly what we needed as a soft upgrade!
I find it hilarious people are upset over rumours and speculation they themselves made up. Nintendo literally said they weren't upgrading the Switch multiple times. And they didn't. They gave it a fresh coat of paint and QoL improvements.
This is also the internet. They could have release a 4K model with bluetooth, mowed your lawn for you whle making you dinner and people would still outrage about something.
This is the age we live in.
I've never heard of anybody asking for the Switch to have bluetooth support until this article
Nintendo will still release an upgraded Switch.
It will be called the Switch 2. In 2023.
And by gawd it better be backwards compatible with Switch 1 games or they'll spend the rest of the decade fending off cries for ports.
@RadioShadow because I cant find any cord headphones around my house, did upgrade the moment no other device support jack& cable
@VoidofLight
I think it might be the community's attempt to shame nintendo into doing better.
@LXP8
I have one friend who complained about it again and again.
I sent him a link to the announcement this morning, and his response was, "So, they finally added bluetooth."
Having my focus elsewhere, even though I had sent the link, my response was, "Wait what?"
@YoungLink64 That's the thing, they wouldn't be happy. 4K and bluetooth....people would rage about Joycons, no folders, no themes, the storage, the colour scheme, the much higher price point for those things, whatever they can. It literally doesn't matter what they would have done or will do. This is the internet and the bashing is what gets attention. Hell, it has an article here to highlight it.
My honest take: I feel like 90% of people were saying, "it doesn't exist! It doesn't exist!" So what are they disappointed for
I also think it's lame and rather ignorant to attack not having Bluetooth, when any headset worth its salt has a dedicated dongle anyways. The only people who still think headsets need or should have Bluetooth are people who don't actually own any gaming headsets. If they did, they wouldn't be asking for it. There's a reason PS doesn't allow them either.
I also find it strange ppl latch onto the ethernet to criticize it. Had they not included it, those same people would be complaining a higher priced revision still couldn't be bothered to include ethernet. Damned if you do, damned if you don't.
As for joycon complaints. Hardly any reports of issues from Switch Lites, and joycon were revised with slightly new internal mechanism design for the v2 release alongside it. So they may already be fixed (to the best extent they can be) and most issues are from earlier models. But, even if that's not the case, they should still last a few years, and if not, send in for free repair if needed, or pop $35 on a L Joycon replacement. Or just buy the Binbok Joycon and be done with it once and for all. In any of these cases, the outcome doesn't seem nearly as dire as some portray it.
All that said, I do wish they had increased performance, even moderately. And it sucks they didn't because a number of games are right on the cusp of stable performance and just need a bit more oomph. A little would go a long ways. That's honestly a little frustrating. Not even gonna pretend it isn't.
But knowing a 2.0 revision/successor is almost certainly still coming at some point- the most trusted Nvidia leaker Kopite told us about a new Orin chip for Switch ( suspect this is to keep momentum in the meantime) I'll enjoy it for what it is.
These enhancements are nonetheless appreciated. I love OLED- I'm a Vita owner. I never thought I'd see the day I'd be playing Switch games on an OLED screen. I like the new kickstand. I'm down for better speakers. And I actually just had ethernet ran across the house with a splitter for my PC/PS5, so this is perfect. And I'll take whatever extra storage I can get. Even if it's just 32 gb more. So I'm happy, even if it's not everything I had hoped for.
“The internet reacts” is like saying “humanity reacts”. Who were you expecting to react? Cats? Dogs? Trees?
/just teasing
@Hinade: You’re right! A console from 2013 should be absolutely comparable to a Switch! I mean it’s not like technology advances exponentially or anything…😂
@JaxonH Ain’t nobody got time for all that.
I don't need an upgraded Switch myself, but this seems nice enough. I suppose it would also be nice to have more stable performance (though that's not something I usually suffer over anyway) and some sort of explicit confirmation of Joy Con drift properly attended to, so... maybe next time. I'm not overly worried about any of it right now.
I never play handheld and this is the best upgrade I could have hoped for. It doesn't make my old Switch obsolete. I'm perfectly happy with my Switch and haven't really noticed the problems that others enjoy complaining about. It looks like they're holding back to really show off their next-gen console so I'd rather that be a big-leap forward rather than a half-step like what Sony and MS did (as a PS4 Pro owner I see little reason to get a PS5, it's a very minor upgrade in my opinion).
Comparing the Switch to the Vita, it's straight up ridiculous, the Vita was a joke
@Switcher
Given the fact this is a website for reading entire articles, and people have time to type out their own replies and read everyone else's comments, I struggle to believe nobody has 30 seconds for a short few paragraphs.
@KryptoniteKrunch Not that I really care about either of these things, but do you know what did have folders and themes? The 3DS.
"Random: The Internet Reacts To The New Switch OLED Model"
(suggests alternative version of this part of the article ("Random: Reactions to the New Nintendo Switch OLED Model"))
They disappointed instead of being innovative they took WiiU backwards steps. They had every opportunity to make a difference but choose to downgrade rather then do a innovative upgrade.
Nintendo still has one thing I don’t think anybody else does: Switch menus can be navigated with the right stick.
Keep your damn 4K hdr 120fps. Right stick menu navigation fuhlife.
@JasmineDragon,
Yes there is a lot of delusion on the internet.
People are so cool on the internet, problem is that have no idea what the masses want, which is why this will sell tonnes.
I don't know why anyone would get excited for this. The scalpers are gonna buy every last one and sell them online for $1000 or more. No point in getting excited for any new physical products anymore. The scalper a##holes will just ruin it for everyone...the greedy *****.
Ahh memes about Nintendo never get old 😂
When we saw mere seconds of Splatoon 3 gameplay, we're like YES, PRAISE THE LORD!
New 3ds had at least exclusives like Minecraft and Earthbound and Xenoblade Chronicles. Also it run games like Pokemon Ultrasun faster. Why they couldn't do the same now? Apple upgrade cpu/gpu each year
Take a game like Doom Eternal. It run at 1440p/60fps on Series S or 1080/120fps, and on my Switch it drops as low as 640x360/30fps on portable mode. A little boost could do wonders!
@TheFrenchiestFry Is that a Nathaniel Bandy reference? Love that dude
