Wait! Don't throw away your Nintendo Switch dock just yet! It's still good — even if it doesn't have that snazzy new LAN port.
The newly-announced Nintendo Switch (OLED Model) isn't much bigger than the old one, although it seems like the size difference is just enough that Labo kits might not fully work as intended any more — but the docks will still work juuuuust fine, according to the Nintendo UK FAQ. Even the new LAN port will work with older models.
Q2. Can the Nintendo Switch dock (with LAN port) also be used with Nintendo Switch?
Yes, the dock can be used, including the LAN port.
Please note: a system update may be required.
Q3. Can the Nintendo Switch dock be used with Nintendo Switch (OLED model)?
Yes, this is possible. Please note: a system update may be required.
So, whether you like the curvy look of the new, white toaster, or you prefer the angular lines of the old one, you're covered. We already know that the Joy-Cons are the same, too — although that news may have disappointed many who were hoping for a drift-free upgrade.
Does this news make you more or less likely to upgrade? Let us know in the comments below!

Now they just need to release the console without the dock for us more cheapskates that don't need to spend an extra £100, for the dock addition.
I hope that this new dock doesn't scratch up my Switch.
@XenoShaun
I wonder why they don't do this. Isn't Nintendo the company that stopped bundling 3DS chargers with new sales 'because the customers already have them'?
The white is the color I didnt know I needed:0 so elegant
It's literally the same system but with a prettier screen, why wouldn't it work with any other dock? lol
Then why not release both the dock and console itself separately? That would give consumers even more of a choice.
Hope they sell the docks separately, would be good to have one on a second TV for my OG switch
This console revision seems redundant if you primarily play the Switch on an OLED television.
@XenoShaun : The dock would cost Nintendo bugger-all to make, so slashing 100 quid from the price makes no sense on their end. Yes, they charged a ridiculous amount for the dock on its own (back when it was available separately; I believe it has since been discontinued), but that is by no means reflective of the cost to Nintendo.
There is next to nothing "under the hood", so to speak, as far as the dock is concerned, and the HDMI and A/C adapter wouldn't cost Nintendo very much either. Even a 50 quid discount for their exclusion (I suspect) would eat too much into the Switch's profitability as lower cost models typically have higher margins, not lower.
Of course we can all wait until Black Friday/Christmas and hope for retailers to price the OLED Switch more competitively (or bundle it with a game or two and/or accessories).
It is a tad ridiculous that the retail price for the OLED model is HIGHER considering how long the Switch has been on the market for, when ideally, it should have been priced the same as the standard model, with the standard model receiving a discount.
So can I just get the dock and nothing else?
Yeah I'll just eBay the console portion. Already have the og dock and gutted a second for a portable one. Can't remember the last time I used regular joycons so don't need those either.
I assumed as much, tbh. I'm on the fence because I don't really find the upgrade to be very big (this is basically the Switch equivalent of the 3DS XL) but my kids have been unkind to my current Switch. Tbh, I will probably get whatever comes out in 2023, just going on the current timeline from Nintendo on the Switch revisions.
@XenoShaun You know that's actually a good question. Why won't they also release a version without the dock so us previous Switch owner don't have to pay for things we already have like the dock and stuffs? Would had save us a few bucks for things we don't need. Then again Nintendo probably don't want to have a meltdown like the last time they launch a system without proper installation setup needs like the power adapter crisis 3DS and NES/Super NES Mini owners cried last gen when they got a launch system without one.
i wouldn't mind a hot white dock for my old Switch.
Thanks for that information.
Not that I'm going to need it since this console has revisions that should have been on the original.
If I'm going to spend that amount of money on a slightly better revision I might as well get a XB or PS5 for a little more.
😁
4k upscaling capable dock cofirmed !!!
I’m sure there are people disappointed with the new Switch, but when you look at Nintendo’s history, where the Switch is today, it makes sense. I enjoy Nintendo staying out of the graphics race. Makes the industry a bit more interesting.
The only thing I would likely update would be the Dock. It would be nice not to have to use the dongle.
I could have used that extra USB port with the Wii U.
It's nice but not essential, dock and joy con compatibility is a good move. As much as I love my New 3DS XL splitting the hardware and making some games exclusive to the higher end doesn't make much business sense. The 3DS showed that. This makes more business sense. Also don't see how they will fit 4K games on the cartridges at this point. It gives the Switch family a boost before Christmas and helps drive towards 100m units sold.
@Snatcher That'd be great. Are docks even sold separately though?
I already have 2 docks, though I do prefer the curved lines of the new dock.
I have to say it’s growing on me. I still have the original model, so getting the extra battery life is also a bonus.
The thought of playing breath of the wild with that nice OLED screen is also very appealing
Well since it's the same switch, why wouldn't it work? 🤔
@Fujimoto-San I think so but I'm not sure if its licensed.
@Silly_G I was certainly being hyperbolic on the price point, but the idea still stands. Even £30 or something off would be great. Same with now opening options for people to just get the dock for the Lan comparability. It would be great to have these revisions also spur interest in current owners more as well, especially when Furukawa-san (or Kimishima?) wanted there to be many switches in people's households.
I am glad at least that we aren't getting shafted badly with the UK price. Most was talking to earlier today were dreading it would be £330-£350.
@Ghost_of_Hasashi Sounds like Nintendo just can't win in any situation like that. Damned if they do and damned if they don't. Perhaps it's too logical to see the 'upgrades' sold and properly explained separately along with the standard bundle.
The new dock actually looks sturdier to me; is it?
What would you all consider to be an obnoxious quantity of docks to own? 3? 4? 5?
Asking because I may be a dock hoarder.
@Snatcher I thought so. I've seen various unlicensed listings online.
@RandomNerds
If you have more docks than televisions, then I'd say that's too many.
I never doubted this would be the case. But it's good to have it confirmed. If/when I do upgrade, I will probably put my old dock in the living room for when people come to visit. And I'll probably set up my original Switch as a family unit after I transfer everything over.
@XenoShaun Agreed, all they really need to get people to upgrade is the console/screen segment. No joy cons, joy con cradle, joy con wrist straps, HDMI, AC Adaptor or dock.
Maybe even offer a money back system for people returning their no longer needed original console for salvaging and recycling of parts.
I think that might be a bit too forward thinking for Nintendo though.
@XenoShaun At least Nintendo's selling mariko Switch w/o dock in Japan, guess they will start selling OLED model later this year:
https://store-jp.nintendo.com/customize/switch-2nd/
Save 5,500yen, w/o dock, AC adapter, HDMI and Joy-Con grip.
And they also sell extra dock w/ AC adapter & HDMI for 9,878yen.
https://store-jp.nintendo.com/list/hardware-accessory/dock-battery/HAC_A_CASAA.html
Not a bargain at all.
