Yesterday, Nintendo rolled out Version 12.0.0 of the Switch firmware. While you might have expected it to be something significant, according to the official patch notes, all it did was fix an issue tied to the save data backup feature. Is it hiding other things, though?
While we've already had a conversation about this, it seems dataminers may have now discovered something big. There is apparently new information emerging that firmware 12.0.0 supposedly contains evidence of a "new dock", designed for a newer model system, that can receive updates.
Aula, as you might recall, is believed to be the codename of the rumoured 4K Nintendo Switch - which this is all linked to:
OatmealDome has also noted how it could potentially be an update for the current Switch dock, but as far as they know, it's never received one before.
"The Dock itself only contains USB chips, a MyDP -> HDMI converter, and flash memory to store its firmware. I’m not sure what the point of an update would be considering how basic it is inside. (As far as I’m aware, it has never received one before.)"
The same source further mentions how update 12.0.0 adds the following internal setting: “4kdp_preferred_over_usb30”, which seemingly "makes sense" given the rumours about "4K output" in the new model:
If this is what some think it is, Nintendo hasn't made much effort to hide this information. Could this all be leading to a Switch Pro? We'll leave that for you to discuss in the comment section down below.

Lol, sounds like switch pro is happening and my wallet is filled with flies
Doesn’t the dock have usb 3.0 that isn’t currently activated? Maybe it does something with that?
I just find it hard to believe, even with all the evidence in the world, that a switch pro is coming this year or next. There's a part shortage in the market, and it's just begging the system to be bought up by Scalpers..
I'd love it if an option for gamers who want 4K at home was just to update the dock. Heck charge me 200 for it and build in the new processor and have me just use the old one on the go, I won't mind.
And here wait where are the NintenDoomed and Deniers notice they are all quiet now???
Would be neat if "Aula" itself didn't have both feet in the realm of speculation. We're talking something "believed to be" on the basis of something "believed to be", and ALL of it on the basis of Nintendo "believed to be" seeking extra profits in 4K gaming with a straight face. But raise an eyebrow at any of this, and you're "in denial".😅
If I really wanted 4K I would have bought any other console. I wouldn't refuse it but it's really not a priority.
I'll just focus on what is currently announced, Nintendo always has their own plans and I'll go along with the ride.
@nhSnork sure, but I think we'd all have to be pretty naive to believe that Nintendo doesn't have an upgrade for their latest portable in the works. The 3DS had the N3DS, the DS had the DSi, the Game Boy had the Game Boy Color, the only dedicated handheld of theirs to not have an upgrade of the sort was the GBA. Plus it just makes sense that Nintendo would continue to improve upon the concept of the Switch, a hybrid portable that has dominated the market with no direct competition in their corner of the market.
@VoidofLight When has Nintendo ever been practical?
Switch pro will be an immediate preorder/day 1 purchase for me.
I spent a lot of money to get a Series X and yet I still find myself playing Switch by far the most. A 4k Switch would make me very happy.
Yeah, no switch pro in this case. Might happen eventually but not this year imo.
Maybe for the 5th anniversary for the switch there could be a switch pro
Can't wait to not be able to find one, and have the pre-orders sell out immediately!
I roll my eyes everyone I see these types of "leaks"
@anoyonmus I don't see why not, the New 3DS came out about 3 and a half years into the life of the 3DS, its now been over four years for the Switch, and the competition is now marching forward, it would only make sense for Nintendo to release some sort of upgraded Switch sooner than later here.
So the switch pro will be a new dock? I like this idea over getting a whole knew system.
@Snatcher Pretty sure it will be both a new unit and a new dock.
I so wish this successor would have the glasses free 3D of the 3DS in handheld mode and then games could receive patches to support it like BOTW, Odyssey, Ultimate, etc. But I only ever see myself as someone that wants this feature, no one cares about 3D anymore it would seem. And hey, I get it, but I always personally loved the effect in video games especially when you don't even need any special glasses or anything.
@duffmmann I'm pretty sure the GBASP was the upgrade to the GBA.
@ObeseChihuahua2 sure, that one added a backlight (or frontlight in it's original version), but that didn't improve upon the performance of the games it could output. The complete same exact GBA library is available on a GBA SP as a GBA; this does not hold true for the GBC and GB or DSi and DS or N3DS and 3DS.
Snoopingas much...?
@ObeseChihuahua2 @duffmmann logged in to say this 😆
Switch pro will happen hollyday 2021 along with BOTW2 wich will use the new fonctionality of the new modèle, that’s my guess.
If the Switch Dock does get a firmware update, I would love for the USB 3.0 input to actually run at USB 3.0 speeds. It would allow for 3.0 USB Ethernet adapters to run at Gigabyte internet speeds.
Right now, it's only running at 2.0 speeds...
@Otoemetry I'd say that SP isn't in the same realm of the kinds of upgrades of the other systems, all the SP did at the end of the day that the original couldn't was play games with a built in light. I feel like that would be akin to a new version of the Switch having built in bluetooth audio transmitting and nothing else. Sure its an accessory function that the original couldn't do, but it adds nothing to the actual quality of the output of the games it plays, compared for GBC, DSi, and N3DS which actually did offer improved performance of video games beyond state of life accessory functions.
@SwitchForce
Can you actually point me to anyone who has ever said "NintenDoomed" in any of these articles?
I have an original Switch model, and I've been holding off on buying the newer model, despite having depleted my battery to 1% a number of times, specifically because of all these rumors that a new model was on the horizon. C'mon, Nintendo! Just announce this thing already!!
@KayFiOS What excites me about the potential upgrade, is that I'll buy and enjoy that, and then finally feel comfortable with hacking out my launch model Switch.
@duffmmann
Puts on Nerd Mode
Ackshually, the Gameboy Color isn't an update to the Gameboy it's a full on successor.
An update to the original Gameboy would be the Gameboy Pocket and the Gameboy Light.
I don’t like this kind of post at all. I don’t want to see rumors. To each their own I guess.
@ImBackBB mmmm gonna disagree. I know that's how they marketed it, but in actuality, all the GBC was, was an upgraded GB, not a full on successor, when many of its games in full color were still completely playable on a regular GB, I'd have to call that an upgrade not a full on successor. Yes it had some games that couldn't be played on the original GB, but so too did the DSi and N3DS, but they're still upgrades all the same, granted their exclusive lists were smaller, but they were still the same kind of upgrades all the same.
@duffmmann
Okay, guess I'll go play my Gameboy Color with it's colored graphics games on my fat black & white Gameboy then... 🙄
This was the switch pro the entire time, and upgrade to the dock, I knew not to believe you Bloomberg! All jokes aside, I’m ready to come back to this post tomorrow, and see the same fifteen people either saying “pro isn’t happening” or the “it’s definetly happening, botw 2 is exclusive, try to play Metroid prime 4 next year on your normal model losers!(in a snotty nerd voice).” Just watch, this is all gonna be a prank by Doug Bowser, where he tells developers to tell the “Nate the hate” dude, that they are fired, and know about switch pro, just watch.
@ImBackBB Ok, why don't you go play Xenoblade Chronicles 3D on a regular 3DS too?
Or how about we regard it like this: Link's Awakening DX can be played on both a GB and GBC, but if played on a GBC, you'll get the added benefit of playing the game in full color. Likewise, let's play Hyrule Warriors: Legends on 3DS, if we do so on a regular 3DS, we get the game in 2D, and if we do on a New 3DS , we get the game with full stereoscopic 3D even though the regular 3DS can't play that game this way.
Surely, you can recognize how these are similar here in terms of being upgrades and not full on successors. At least I hope you do.
@duffmmann
Yes, my apologizes. You made me feel like quite the [email protected] I should really keep my fingers off the keyboard and finish off eating my shoe...
@ImBackBB *****, I don't mean to make you feel like ass, I just meant, I think these systems are more upgrades than they are full on successors. I totally see where you were coming from, and a younger me absolutely shared that mentality, but as I've looked back on the GBC, I've come to recognize it wasn't the full on successor I used to regard it as.
@duffmmann while the topic of past upgrades is debatable in itself (Color's comparative performance and library of exclusives puts it beyond the mere "upgrade" league, its place better off filled by Advance whose SP model was a textbook example of an upgrade, with blackjack and backlights), we've already seen Nintendo improve on the flagship Switch model. The thought of them doing it once or twice more on a similar scale doesn't sound outside the realm of possibility - it's the zany wet dreams the fandom and the tabloids keep trying to cram into the notion on little else besides their mental fixation on Sony and Microsoft's respective midgen ventures. They even expect this thing to parrot the "Pro" part in its name!
The only point where they're truly looking back at Nintendo's history is using New 3DS's glorious handful of exclusives (which PS4P and XBO-X avoided at all) to lobby their craving for all of the contemporary AAAs on the Switch, trifles like the proportional battery and wallet tolls be damned. Otherwise, it's all about the Joneses, to the point of filling up the rumour mill with every other PS/XB-flavoured wish under the sun and expecting it to happen at once.😏 Including 4K, a purely aesthetic feature that even the more powerful home consoles still jump through various hoops to approach, all after Nintendo's own last investment in an aesthetic feature eventually ended with "2DS" models.
Let's face it, no matter the volume of "leaks" and "datamines", Switch Pro will NEVER sound probable until/unless Nintendo actually bothers to make it (which many including myself assume to happen anyway but in a few more years and technically kicking off Gen 10 already), because everything about it so far boils down to the TWO bullet points behind all the argumentative fluff - "I want it that way" and "Sony and Microsoft do it". DSi and N3DS actually participate in this logic less than we would like to admit.
Even if Nintendo were to announce Switch Pro in a few days, it would never undo just how ridiculous, unprofessional on the journalist side (there's a goddamn limit to how many stubbornly anonymous sources you can "cite" before losing any semblance of informative value) and increasingly self-absorbed its so-called "harbingers" will have been up to that point.
And yes, GBA SP's backlight definitely counts as an upgrade - it was a significant QoL feature directly impacting the usability of the entire device. Not just at nighttime either.😄 The nub on New 3DS didn't change the actual output but was similarly important despite its own remaining compromises.
@ImBackBB Heroes of Might & Magic on Gen 4 Game Boy, yeah baby.😅
@idrawrobots
Then don't click on it?!
@nhSnork
They are just reporting on the rumours, I don't see anything ridiculous or unprofessional about it.
Also everyone is using the "Pro" moniker because everyone knows what is meant by it, not that people actually expect it to be called the Switch Pro.
Don't know why these rumours get people so riled up.
@duffmmann I also want 3d back. I found it infinitely better than "MOAR graphics!" Personally as long as whatever upgrade they make has stable 30-60 FPS no matter what, I'm cool with it.
@duffmmann
Dude, it's okay. It's my fault.
It's just one of those things where you think you're so certain of knowing about but it never comes across in your mind to actually research on it. And then when you find out you can play the solid Gameboy Color cartridge games on OG Gameboy (not the transparent ones) you kinda go into denial and a bit of your reality chips off. (A bit over dramatic I know, but still...)
@ImBackBB lol, I get it. I remember the Christmas I got my Game Boy Color and a few games, some were black with the notch, and some were transparent without the notch, and I learned fairly early on that some GBC games could still be played on a regular Game Boy and some could not. Had I not got games of both kind I totally could have been in that same camp after all these years.
@BetterThanVegas Totally, adding depth to me is so much more exciting than adding the likes of 4K. Though it feels like to me if made right the new Switch could be the best of both worlds if utilizing its power properly, 4K when docked, up to 720p with 3D when played in handheld. Sounds like such a logical direction to take the system in too, the Switch is the only system around at this time that feasibly could offer glasses-free 3D in this day and age at that, why not offer that possibility? (that's not to be answered, I know why, the feature was never embraced by the masses in video games, despite how perfect it is for the medium)
The day its announced...
Do you guys believe the new Switch Pro is coming? - Nintendolife
Sad to see Nintendo focusing on 4K output instead of better and more stable frame rate. Most of the games available on switch are cartoony or low poly indies. I don't see how 4K would make them better at all.
Any new model Switch powerful enough to run games in 4k, well I jyst don't see how that's a new gen upgrade, that's a next gen console. And it's at least $600 to get that much power into a portable.
Switch doesn't even have PS4 or Xbox One power. The jump to PS4 Pro didn't give that system true 4k, just checkerboard. The Xbox 1 X did 4k, but it was also $500 for a big huge honking box. So cramming that much power into a console would not be cheap. And I really don't see the point if it's just an upgrade and not a next gen console.
So if there is an upgrade and 4k, It's for Netflix like video streaming, not games. I just can't see it.
@nhSnork who hurt you that much?🥺
@duffmmann GBA > GBA SP
remember? The clamshell and the backlit screen?!
I like your theory though and I agree with it. A new switch will be coming it’s just a matter of when. It’s not necessarily needed but it’d be great to get an upgrade.
E3, keep the eye on the prize!!
@Gus_Campos
If you want to get into the weeds it's not going to be "4K". There are hardware standards, when you say the hardware supports 4K what you mean is it has HDMI 2.0 or above. Which yes, means 4K/60hz. But it also means HDR, VRR, 120hz and so on
@rjejr Expecting actual 4k resolution is bonkers. ANY game, including PC currently uses AI-based upscaling at best for 4K. In case of switch it would surely mean that the video output is somehow upscaled and output as 4k, which would provide better and more consistent result as opposed to TV-side upscaling
@VoidofLight I agree 100% nintendo is looking at the ps5 and Xbox series x&s and thinking let us wait this out and there are so many switch systems out there and people are buying them up like candy I doubt nintendo would release any system this year maybe next yr to drive up sales but the nintendo switch train hasn't lost steam yet.
@tonyp1987 Yeah. I could see a revision probably happening in 2023 at the earliest honestly.
a new Switch is an instabuy
@Milenko It being legal is not my concern. I simply don’t want to know stuff like this or an extra smash character until it’s officially announced. This site didn’t used to be so rumor heavy. I hope I can find another place to get Nintendo news.
@VoidofLight Implying Nintendo gives even a single f.u.c.k about stopping scalpers.
@smolsauce They would if they don't get software sales to make up for the hardware, if there's exclusives planned.
@idrawrobots I guess that's fair but a news site job is to report the latest news relating to Nintendo and rumors, especially ones with plenty of evidence behind them, are news. Some people are interested in this sort of thing and want to be kept up to date, if you don't then that's fine but that's why the word 'rumor' is in the headline. If you see an article with rumor in the headline then just scroll past and ignore it
What’s fishy about this is, the word „supposedly“ in Artikel itself and headline.
🤷♂️
@Shade_Koopa Given the fact that streaming video only uses 100mbps on 8k video, and 8k video isnt even an option on Switch. And the fact that online gaming rarely uses over 1mbps with 5mbps being overkill. What would the Switch do with the increased speed? Download update patches faster? That probably wouldn’t even happen because its not like Nintendo’s servers are going to send out updates at over 500mbps. USB 2.0 ethernet adapters work at up to 480mbps.
The biggest game on Switch takes less than 10 minutes to download on Switch at full speed. The average triple A takes about 2 minutes.
Its not really much to gain here.
Its not like its a pc where you are doing all kinds of crazy things. For what the Switch can do, max speed it has now isn’t even necessary.
Nahh.
"is_crda_fw_update_supported" definitely refers to the Canadian Resort Development Association firewall update. Meaning we'll soon start to see switch docks in every hotel room with additional security built in.
You heard it here first 🤫
@Northwind they don't have to RELEASE it this year, but they mos def can ANNOUNCE it?
@Gus_Campos
Indeed.
I would prefer 1080P with better framerate, more effects and details over 4K.
@duffmmann
I think you're the only person that I've ever heard say that but it's actually a really good idea. I like 3D as well and face tracking on a switch pro to make the 3D consistent even with movement would be awesome.
It would require a lot of power though to send double the image.
Let's face it. We ARE getting a new Switch model as it's almost the end of the cycle for the current Switch model assuming this one lasts 5-6 years.
I would like a dock that support Nvidia DLSS so it can scale content up to 4K and hopefully even increase the FPS to 60 by adding extra frames.
But it won't add any more graphical power, textures, lightning and so on.
@TheFullAndy you're literally replying to a text wall on what's riling people up. NL is less of a culprit here anyway, with mostly cheap extra click pursuit to incriminate, but the likes of Bloomberg like to consider themselves journalists as well (which becomes an excuse for the likes of NL and the rumour mill apologists - "echoing a news outlet with authority, yada yada"), and their approach is downright cringeworthy. Rumours are largely worthless regardless of the content and potential credibility, but exploiting them on the basis of purely anonymous and alleged sources? As discussed before, this isn't goddamn ByPol, there are no excuses for anonymity - especially among whoever is actually willing to risk their NDAs and careers in the first place. That, however, concerns all such rumours in general; I've already elaborated in the previous comment why the "Switch Pro" topic in particular got so old so fast.
As for nobody really expecting this thing to be called "Switch Pro", especially after months and years of the Nintendonet being a broken record about it... I hate to dispell this naivety, but we are talking a fandom here. No kind of lunacy is truly off-limits in a fandom.😏
@EriXz no one hurt me, thanks for the concern. You must be new here, but if I sound like a cynical jerkass, that usually has more to do with me being one.😉
Daughters birthday present sorted, she get my old Switch!!
I'm all for a more powerful Switch.
My preference is an all-new system rather than a Pro upgrade, especially if the upgraded version is going to cost the same as a PS5.
But it's still exciting news
I Know it wont happen, But I'd love a simple Switch home console, no screen option, but with like, 3TB HDD inside (wishful thinking). I really dont know if it would sell though.
I never play in handheld, but I know a lot of people do, so...
Like, we have the Switch Lite.
Why not a Switch Heavy?
Listen. I'm already buying it day one. Just give me a nudge when they announce it. Thanks.
"CrdA" means "Cradle Aula"
This has been presented as a fact, presumably it's just rumour as per everything else?
A dock with output upscaeling and a new processor in to handle higher resolutions. Also have hard drive support for your home library of games. When the Switch Docks you can transfer games between the dock and portable unit, and the Docks processor handles game resolution and framerate, while the Switch's GPU can run "full pelt" with it's processor taking a back seat administering the link via USB C.
I want the 4K meme to end.
@Northwind Yup bought for kids to play on during lockdown while mum and dad watch tv. (March 2020-Jan 2021).
@Pod 4k isn't a meme, guy, and its going to happen weather you like it or not.
I'll be ordering 5-6 (one for brother, cousin, and three friends) of these when they eventually become available.
@duffmmann It would be perfect for a 4k docked and stereoscopic 3d on handheld!!It will be never happening but we can dream for free!!
All these great switch games (especially open worlds) in 3d with so much depth and the pop out of screen effect.
Also think how much excellent DKC tropical freeze would seems in 3d.(The 3ds DKR port is much more exciting than the wii). I never buy ports but I bought all 3ds ports of great games just for the 3d effect! So only in that case I will be double dipping in Switch port games!
@VoidofLight i agree especially as you cant get a ps5 or series x anywhere as well. and if they dont want another 3ds farce and insist games run on both how many devs will bother.
If I wrote the firmware update I would put clues in the code for fun. It gives the geeks something to do I suppose. If a pro switch comes out I'll buy it but I'm not getting hyped for it or searching for silly clues.
I wonder if Switch Pro will use parts that aren't short of supply and be killing it this holiday while PS5/Xbox still has no stock. I think Nintendo is planning to seriously cash in this year.
I knew when you had the article yesterday and that the Oatmeal bloke say he was going to delve deeper that some crap like this was due soon.
Thanks for looking at some letters and numbers and finding something that you could make another switch pro rumour from.
Well done you kings!
@SwitchplayerJohn Everything is in short supply. It's a semi-conductors shortage. Basically almost any chips you see in a motherboard. Unless Nintendo's factory have a giant hidden stash, they won't avoid the issue.
ohhhh new games are coming, Mario Kart 8 4K, Mario Odyssey 4K, Luigi 4K, Mario Party 4K, Zelda, all editions 4K, Mario and Mario & Mario 4K
@TurboTEF 4k is a meme. It's the same meme than the PS5 having 8k on the box.
The switch needs a complete overhaul not a slight upgrade for a new model.
The current switch can't even handle 1080 on new releases, seems ridiculous that people are asking for 4k. Base last gen systems didn't hit that resolution and to expect a handheld with the power of a PS4 pro or X1X is a little far fetched.
With games like MHR looking so good and selling so well on current switch why do Nintendo need to push for an upgrade that would price a large proportion of the customer base out. Many of us gamers wouldn't think twice about dropping £500-£600 on a console, but how many casuals are going to do that and that's Nintendo's biggest market share.
@TurboTEF
It's unlikely to happen whether youre ready to buy them or not. And It's a meme whether or not it really does happen.
Nintendo releasing a dock with a dedicated 4K upscaler actually makes more sense than them releasing a whole new Switch model.
@Pod Be ready to eat those words later on. I'll be here to make sure you do!
@Kamalen That was a completely useless analogy, LOL
You're the meme here, fool!
@TurboTEF
What would I eat? How could any of what I said be proven wrong?
I expected a conversation like this to happen. If this is real, then I'm expecting them to be scalped. Besides, these will be guaranteed to be expensive as heck - likely as much as a PS5 and XSX, but nowhere near their hardware capabilities.
crda = Cradle Aula????
Wow, what a stretch! Maybe it means Core Data, or Console Register Device A, or Can’t Really Decide Anything, or...
@nhSnork
I am personally hoping for it to be called the Super Switch Series SX Pro NX!
I will buy the next switch instantly. pre-order to make sure I'm in the first half year buyers... Like I did with my ps5, same story.
@DavidMac oh, absolutely! This would be perfect. I don't want/need another device. Sell me a new dock that makes the switch...switch to a higher powered console.
they should do it "SEGA" style - new dock for old switch devices, with a dedicated cpu/gpu inside, to help the switch while docked to achieve more graphics power, like the 32X, or mega cd did for the mega drive, but only just the dock, as an optional device for people with high res tv's or users, who are playing switch 99% docked, like me.
would be perfect for more stable framerates while docked + hardware based upscaling.
and devs can push out updates for existing games, to utilize the "new" cpu to get better graphics while docked. problem solved ;P
@iLikeUrAttitude This isn’t a leak. This is evidence. Of what? We don’t know yet.
I agree, the speculation is annoying because so many people are like “I told you so”, as if these rumors weren’t going around since year one, and multiple groundswells proved to be false.
@DavidMac that is a great idea.
@SwitchForce who?
@YessMasster Is this what it's come to now, having a console output a 1080p game at 4k and just saying the console is 4k? I suppose Sony kind of did it w/ the Pro but I saw the word "checkerboard" in nearly every article on the subject. "FauxK"
I've read the article twice, I didn't see the word "upscale" in any form in there anywhere. And while it would probably be better upscaling than a tv, the fact is anybody playing Switch on a 4k tv is seeing the game in 4k unless they are just playing the game on 1/4 of the tv screen. 🤷♂️
I had a Wii when I upgraded my 36" SD TV to a 52" HD TV and a lot of games looked bad on the new tv. I even bought Component cables, which did help w/ color a bit, but the games still had me wishing I had my Wii hooked up to the old TV. So b/c of that I was worried about moving the Switch over from that tv to the new 4k one a few weeks ago. But I was wrong, Switch games look great. I think it's more brightness and color than anything else, but it's an overall improvement. So I don't think having a upgraded console or dock doing FauxK is really necessary if it's going to add to the price at all, and I don't see how it wouldn't.
Some of the people on the Sony side don't even want 4k, they'd rather have 1440 and 60FPS. Emphasis on the 60FPS. So Nintendo may be focused on the wrong thing if 4k is their end game.
https://www.pushsquare.com/news/2020/06/ps5s_first_batch_of_titles_appear_to_deliver_the_native_4k_dream
@Azuris @Gus_Campos
If they go with 4k support, it almost certainly means DLSS, which effectively doesn't cost performance.
No one knows what they are planning, but 4k, in this case, doesn't mean that you can't get your other wishes.
@rjejr
Your experience with upgrading from an SD tv to HD is exactly the reason why consoles do the upscaling themselves.
If your tv happens to be bad at it, the result can look pretty bad.
If the console does it itself, the upscaling quality of the tv is out of the picture.
(Though, to be fair, back then at the beginning of the HD era, upscaling tended to be a much bigger issue for tvs than now.)
Besides, as I just mentioned, with a Switch 4k we would probably look at DLSS, which is also a type of upscaling just much better than the usual and something Sony and Microsoft do not even have access to right now.
Considering how standard DLSS seems to become with NVidia, I wouldn't even be surprised if this essentialy ends up as a free upgrade from Nintendos perspective.
@Kirgo DLSS DOES cost performance. The system needs to perform the calculations to reconstruct the image rather than simply upscaling it. It's more intensive than just rendering a game at 1080p and doing a basic upscale to 4K. Or even just using temporal anti aliasing upsampling to reconstruct 1080p to 4K. You need more processing power.
It also needs to be added in and tweaked manually by the developers, older games won't get this technology unless they are updated.
I think Nintendo and developers won't aim for native 4K resolution unless the game is 2D or very light on the GPU, like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is (even this game I doubt - maybe it will be updated to something like 1800p?).
@CheapCheepBeach
Sure, but the processing power is mainly provided by special components, which in turn could easily be standard in a new NVidia chip.
Apart from that, the costs are low enough that it would be 100% worth it, I dare say.
That makes the whole dock shortage make sense then, they'll push a new one.
@Kirgo "upscaling tended to be a much bigger issue for tvs than now"
By the time 1080p tvs were the norm, there were a lot of 1080p, or 720p, tv shows and channels. There have been 4k tvs for about a decade now and at least here in the US - not sure about the rest of the world, we still don't have any cable, antenna or satellite channels broadcasting in 4k. Not the Superbowl or the Academy Awards. There are a few shows on streaming services, but it's still a small proportion. So I would think 4k tv manufacturers have had to do a much better job w/ upscaling b/c probably 98% of what 4k tvs are showing is not 4k content. And they've had a decade to work on the upscaling.
So while I'm sure Nintendo could add something that "outputs" a 4k signal, on modern 4k tvs I'm really not sure it would be worth the extra expense if all they are doing is upscaling a 1080p signal. Let the tvs do it for free, worry about the native resolution and framerate which the Switch has some problem w/ on 3rd party games.
If Nintendo ever does announce a New Switch or Switch Pro before they decide it's time for Switch 2 I really dont' want to hear about 4k unless it's native, or it's video streaming. If it's just an upscaling chip focus the marketing on something else b/c I think most 4k tvs the last few years are probably doing a decent job of upscaling. If a New Switch can do 1440 and checkboard like the PS4 Pro let them just call it higher res. Though I really think PS4 Pro power in handheld is better marketed as a Switch 2, not a New Switch, that would be quite the jump, and it would have to cost.
Should Nintendo launch a dock equipped w/ a 4k upscaling chip - which has been on everyone's minds since they first showed the dock, similar to an N64 Expansion RAM pack - so be it. Dock always seemed like it should boost something for TV out anyway. And the handheld doesn't need 4k on a screen that size. It barely even needs 1080p. But that's not an upgraded Switch, it's just an accessory so few people will buy it and few developers will take advantage of it, like the 3DS Circle Pad Pro.
It's been 4+ years. If they want to do another modest under the radar Switch upgrade at the same cost, fine, but I think they should hold off on any major improvements until next gen. A fully next gen fully backwards compatible Switch 2, like PS5 and Xbox Series. They can sell a new console that plays old games, they don't need to change cartridge's back to discs or some such to force us to repurchase all of our Wii U games again. What do they call Mario Kart 8 DX next gen, Mario Kart 8 DX Remastered?
They got the Switch and Switch Lite, time to move on I think.
The lack of knowledge shown by some of the comments here every time the Switch Pro rumours surface again never cease to make me chuckle.
Here are some simple facts:
Switch games from launch day onwards have been designed with hardware scalability in mind. Switch software cannot assume a given level of performance in the same way titles could on older hardware such as the 3DS.
More demanding Switch games have supported Dynamic Resolution Scaling from launch day. Any title that dynamically lowers it's resolution at times is a game that will see benefits from improved hardware. This is something that can be clearly demonstrated with SoC overclocks.
Developing around 4K output isn't something Nintendo are going to go all in on. They are ruthlessly efficient and eating both additional hardware and software costs flies in the face of how they roll.
What do I think is going to happen? In this case, I'm pretty sure this points towards an enhanced dock that will offer in line 4k upscaling akin to the newest ShieldTVs. Not of much value to those with a fancy high end TV, but potentially pretty nice if your TVs upscaling isn't so great (Which many aren't).
Still got my fingers crossed for a full on Switch refresh using the Xavier SoC though. My AC island is chugging now and this would be the perfect fix.
More Switch pro rumours, one of these has to be right at some point or other.
@Gus_Campos it's obviously going to have 4K upscaling, not 4K native rendering.
Something isn't right with this rumour. My TV is an ancient Panasonic plasma. It's 1024x768 but it accepts a 1080p signal (a real selling point in 2008). I wouldn't benefit from 4K upscaling. So people without a 4K TV won't buy it. Then people who have a 4K TV which happens to have great upscaling may not notice a difference. So they will be pretty annoyed. So the only ones to benefit are people with 4K TVs that don't upscale well. Nintendo wants everyone's money, not some people's money.
What would make more sense is another feature on top of 4K upscaling. I remember those HDMI cables called mCable which add antialiasing. If a new dock had something similar to that but better because it's a dock which has more room for more powerful hardware, more people would benefit. Maybe Nintendo has worked on this technology of their own, maybe they would license it from mCable. Maybe they could work together on something just for the Switch???
Even so, I would say a lot of people don't care about antialiasing either, so that is still not what it is
In a sense a little interesting, in a another I really don't care (considering we are and will be living in a pandemic effected global economy for some time to come)
The update showed me something interesting: when I load a game it now says “this is the most current save data” when I load up a game I’ve played on both of my switches. Nice!

That's the worst kinda conclusion one could come up with. I have a 2K gaming monitor and every pixel matters. 1080p gaming is nothing wrong and using that for justification that others don't buy has no logic in it. You don't need 4K to enjoy the game. No one says this about xbox/ps5 when their TV doesn't have 4K but suddenly when Switch is going 4K it's Blasphemous.
Wow it's so fun to have a new Switch pro rumor like every to every other week because I bet if we just keep making and spreading them a perfected,high-res,no controller drift,3 slotted,and 60 fps Switch pro will just magically poof itself in to existence.😒
This isn't a rumor. The data is there, that's a fact. The interpretation of the data is up for debate and is this speculative, but this information is not a rumor.
A rumor would be: "My uncle works at Nintendo. He said there is a new Switch being developed and it's coming out in 2021", if said account had no verification.
This is not a rumor and is instead facts with extrapolation: "Here is a verified document indicating that Nvidia will halt production of the SoC the Nintendo Switch uses. This could point to a whole new Switch being in development if they have no need for the old SoC".
@SwitchForce They're in denial that their predictions of Nintendo's demise are doomed. Mwahahaha
CRDA = Console Revision Delay Action
switch rumors are a meme at this point. let's just wait and see what happens
@SwitchForce If this is as good as Bllomberg says, it will blow everyone away! Switch is going to end up being one of the best selling gaming consoles ever!
@TheFullAndy if we're digging up vintage codenames like NX, might as well call the upgrade Nintendo Switch Nitro Dolphin. You can't tell me it's not the coolest name a console can ever have.
@duffmmann @duffmmann the original GBA used double A batteries. It was upgraded to a front lit screen with a chargeable battery and a clamshell case which was a precursor to the DS. Then it was upgraded to have a back lit screen. Then there was the GBA micro. The GBA was one of Nintendo's most heavily redesigned consoles.
Just imagine they were trolling us with this kind of code in their updates
@SwitchForce Literally nothing I said puts 2K gaming down. I didn't even use the word 2K. Why would I do that when I said I have a TV that is 2K?!
I dont care for the update. Word is they will make the switch Bluetooth compatible too. Even though it already is without intent. Me and my girlfriend use our Sony Gold headsets on the switch. What they should be working on is the brightness. Its damn near impossible to play anything in the daylight. Same mistake that Sony made with the PSP and Vita. Fix whats broken seems logical but oh well.
@Ambassador_Kong whoosh. Hardware redesigns are not what I'm taking about here. The GBA SP's new features did not enable it to play any games that a regular GBA couldn't play. Hence why I also didn't mention: the Game Boy Pocket, the Game Boy Light, the DS Lite, the DSi XL, the 3DS XL, etc etc.
