If you're looking for something similar but different to the old-school Pokémon games, perhaps Nexomon might be of interest.
Publisher PQube and VEWO Interactive have announced the original entry, currently available on Steam, iOS and Android devices, will be "coming soon" to all consoles including the Nintendo Switch. No date has been confirmed just yet.
"The original Nexomon is coming to Console! Get ready to explore a world where you can catch, evolve and collect over 300 unique Nexomon. Embark on an epic journey and build your ultimate team to take on powerful Tamers and fearsome Nexomon."
If the name sounds familiar, the sequel Nexomon: Extinction was released on the Nintendo Switch last August. We described it as a cheap alternative to Pokemon, but one that's arguably worth a look.
Would you be up for some more Nexomon action on the Switch? Tell us down in the comments.

Oh I thought that was the first nexomon game, not this.
I thought it was gonna be an old flash based game remaster.
I barely recognize the name.
I never bothered with the sequel, and I probably won't bother with this, seeing as the series mostly started as a cheap mobile game.. and genuinely does look to be a clone of pokemon.
I hate to call it that, but looking through creature designs, some of them are blatant copies of pokemon, just changed a bit to avoid being struck down.
It makes perfect sense as to why the game's like this though, given that the series was made in an era before pokemon games came to phones, so people made their own.
Isn't this the game SaltyDKDan played?
How the hell did this knock off beat copy right law's.. music very similar. Also the mosnters look just like pokemon...
@KnightsTemplar It apparently does the bare minimum to bypass said laws, since it doesn’t exactly use the music from the series, or designs, or even lore.
We have Pokemon, who cares about this trash?
I really don’t want to hate on it but yikes… the battle scenes and animations are …. Oofff
I honestly would rather play pickup sticks with my butt cheeks.
The gameplay looks 100 percent like a cheap mobile game. Like… really cheap. The dialogue portraits are well done but I can’t see past everything else.
If you guys want good Pokemon clones, go with the Dragon Quest Monsters series.
....I'll stick with Monster Hunter Stories instead.
The animations during battle aren't that great, so it's certainly a Pokemon clone.
OK there’s too many Shin Megami/Pokémon clones this year. There are saturating it just like the MetroidVania games. I am currently playing Monster Hunter Stories 2 and it is amazing. Do not be fooled by an old school clone that looks like mobile vomit.
These are the ones to get and this is too much.
Shin Megami Tense III
Ni no Kuni II: Revenant Kingdom
Shin Megami Tensei V
Pokemon Brilliant Diamond and Pokemon Shining Pearl
I really enjoyed the Nexomon Extinction game. It was an upgrade version of Pokemon Red of Gameboy for me. Great story, humor, interesting level up system and nice catching system. I will play for sure this game too!
@KnightsTemplar Because none of the work contained here (as far as I can see) is copyrighted.
You can't copyright a genre, game design, game mode, or style. The actual pokemon designs will have been copyrighted and their names trademarked.
As long as all music and designs are original (even if derivative) and does not use any designs from the pokemon games, then it's all legal, and so it should be.
Now that is some ugly ass character design. Yeesh.
I actually didn't mind playing Nexomon Extinction, I might consider picking this up at some point, if for nothing else then to have the first game.
@River3636 Pokemon fans who complain that Pokemon is "too easy" really should give the Shin Megami Tensei series a spin. Pokemon's main appeal is catching pokemon and so the difficulty is not the main focus for the main adventure (the game's target audience is those between the ages of 6-14). While SMT because it is a narrative JRPG whose target audience is those 17+ it has hard-as-nails combat and will provide a real challenge.
I had a good time with Nexomon Extinction but to me releasing the original doesn't make any sense. The sequel does everything the original did, but better.
Wow, plenty of people quick to judge here. Nexomon: Extinction was quite good and had surprisingly funny dialogue, and a decent story. I'm definitely interested in playing the original.
Looks like a cheap flashbase Pokémon ripoff. Why does Nintendo allow this on the Switch?
Looks a bit too cheap and crappy for my personal tastes but at least it still looks better than Pokemon BD/SP.
The Pokémon genre has gone stale. They need some competition. I'll be keeping my eyes on this one.
Yeah, this definitely came before. The over world still looks like a cheap rip-off of the earlier Pokemon games from the GBA/DS era, and the tweening animation is minimal while being unappealing. I wasn't into Destruction because of that and the monster design, but it seems like it was a big improvement overall.
@Link41x Because Pokémon is getting lazier and lazier these days.
We need serious competition so GF puts in effort again. The original Necomon probably isn't (haven't looked too much into it tbf), but I heard good stuff about the sequels.
@Pat_trick Probably because the Switch sells. Also as far as I've heard (and I didn't look too much into it tbf), the Nexomon sequel is the only "serious" competitor in the Indie-"Pokémon-like" genre. (At least as serious as an indie-game can be).
I think just as with Shantae and other Indie-Game series, they just want to make the whole series available on systems the sequels sold well.
Screw this, give us Monster Rancher!!
Imagine if pokemon listened to it's fans. See also:nexomon extinction
Puh. Looks a bit too much like a flash game for my taste. But cool that they drop it. Everybody should just put their whole library on the Switch.
I wasn’t expecting much of Nexomon Extinction, but after I started it I couldn’t put the Switch down lol. That game had lots of references to the first game, which made me wonder if it would ever be released on the Switch too. I’m looking forward to finally play this one.
I’ve got to go back and play some more Nexomon: Extinction. I kind of put it down after my shifts at work got all turned around... Last time I played, I got a little lost and met a nice but lonely tree in the woods who wanted to make some Nexomon friends. I’ll have to help him out next time.
Still waiting on an English Yo-Kai Watch 4.
Love Nexomon Extinction. This is going to be worth a look.
@miguy2 right? All the hate for Nexomon on this page. But they listened to their fans on Nexomon Extinction and continued to improve it, and will no doubt do it for this too I’m sure.
I find it funny how people are claiming these games look bad, but they look better than a lot of the original Pokémon games.
Cool. Fan games do get released. Just gotta make your own name and IP first. No carbon copies. Keep it original at least somewhat.
@Wexter Yes they should. I only pointed out because the Dragon Quest and the Shin Megami series invented the monster catching games. Pokémon just popularized it. So maybe we should call it Poke Megami or Shin Poke. This would be like Metroidvania games. We are so lucky to have 2 Megamis out this year on the Switch.
About "Clones", I prefer Super Monster League, well, It is not in itself a "direct clone", since there are more similar games and nothing to do with "Creatures that we catch and control", but I say clone because of the fact that there we "catch and control creatures" and even its name: " Astromon "
Wake me up when it's Chinpokomon
Wake up me when that is micromon.
@BowtieShyGuy
Coromon and Temtem are confirmed headed for the Switch and I believe Kindred Fates as well.
I thought Digimon was the top contender among Pokemon clones. Honestly, never looked into any of them as I am at best a casual Pokemon fan. Shin Megami Tensei is my personal monster-battling favorite and I've never needed another game like it or like Pokemon. All of these games are massive timesinks, and there are only so many hours in the day.
Nice. I loved Nexomon Extinction and refused to play this one since it was just on mobile, even though it got good reviews. Now I can play it
2021 is a uniquely good year for monster collecting games, with SMT V, MH Stories 2, Nocturne HD Remaster, and the Diamond/Pearl remakes releasing. Early next year is Legends: Arceus. And there's also stuff like Digimon Cyber Sleuth that's already readily available.
Point being: fans of the genre already have multiple, very high-quality options available to them. I won't say indie bootleg Pokemon has no place on the system, since I'm sure there are people who like this, but this doesn't seem like a great year in which to release it.
@TheWingedAvenger
To be fair, Dragon Quest Monsters is more a refinement of the monster recruiting mechanic from Dragon Quest V and Dragon Quest VI than it is of Pokémon. It definitely only EXISTS because of Enix trying to cash in on the 'mon craze (Bandai took a similar route by turning their Tamagotchi-for-boys into a rival 'mon series of anime and games), but in terms of mechanics? As someone who came from Pokémon over to the first western release of DWM, I COMPLETELY misunderstood the tone and mechanics of the games. Pokémon's story is largely dependent on bonding with your partners. Even if you turn them into breeding factories from Gen II onward, you can still take them out of the Day Care and put them back into your party. Dragon Quest Monsters teaches you to use or lose your monsters. Too much time on the Farm means they'll be unusable (and you can only put so many to sleep at once). You have a very limited maximum number of monsters, so if you want to "catch 'em all" you actually have to get rid of monsters.
I tried to play the whole game through with Slib the starter 'mon Slime because I was used to Pokémon and bonding with that first creature. The game ACTIVELY TRIES TO PREVENT YOU FROM DOING THIS. Monsters don't evolve in DQM - you have to breed them to get stronger offspring. Catching boss monsters is actually only a good idea so as to get them for breeding stock. I should have bred or tossed Slib early on. I didn't want to breed Watabou to get a Nocturnus (Darkdrium/Darkdream in earlier translations) because after all the story interactions with Watabou I wanted him in my party, gosh darnnit! But he's actually quite poor a creature, as all non-bred creatures are, so I should have bred him a few generations with creatures like Rosevine and then bred the offspring with a Mortamor Final Form (DeathMore/Deathtamore 3rd Stage) to get the ultimate monster.
It's not the same emotional ties with monsters. This is a series more akin to what people attack Pokémon as: you're raising monsters to fight in cage matches against other monsters. It's not about bonding with creatures. I just didn't see that because it was marketed to me as LIKE Pokémon BUT DIFFERENT!
Notably, this led me to want to try Dragon Warrior I+II on GBC and Dragon Warrior III on GBC, but my parents took away the cart of DQ3 because the cover had a girl in skimpy armour on the cover and they didn't realise this when they bought it for a birthday present. And we were only like 10, so they didn't want us having negative body image stereotyping ingrained into us. Of course, in a game that pixillated, the most offensive thing that made it into the initial translation was the cover itself...
In any case, the themes of Dragon Quest are certainly darker and more oriented for teenagers or adults than Pokémon is, despite the child protagonists of DQM1 and the Pokémon-esque dual-versions of DQM2 (a marketing scheme that EVERYONE was copying from Pokémon right then, see Zelda and MegaMan Battle Network; it's not a good piece of evidence for saying Pokémon clone).
Wow I love how Pokémon fans who will accept anything GF s#&ts out are trashing another game y’all let GF convince you to buy back Pokémon that were in other games for free so your opinions are invalid as all y’all know how to do is kiss GFs butt.
@marandahir
Point taken. DQM is often called a Pokemon clone but it is in many ways the opposite of Pokemon. I was glad that the games were different in so many ways, because I doubt anyone will ever make a clone of Pokemon that's superior to the real thing. Square knew better than to attempt that. I like the DQM games, but for reasons different from why I like Pokemon games.
