The NES Nintendo Switch Online app has had a decent number of Special 'SP' game versions since it launched - these typically give you shortcuts to specific areas of games and apply unique conditions. Somewhat randomly, alongside today's expected addition of 3 SNES games, we now have a Super Mario Bros. 3 SP version (hat-tip to Mario_maniac for the heads up).
When you fire up the NES app it appears fresh at the top left, and takes you straight to World 8 if you want to get right into the game's finale. The theme is '8', clearly, as you also get multiple copies of eight powerups, pitched as 'wardrobe changes' in this instance. It's a fun idea, as you can experiment and mess around with each one without too much concern over losing them. Details and a screen are below.

It's a neat option, especially for those that maybe struggle to reach the end of the game or just want to play around with the power-ups.
So, will you be checking this out?

If you guys did this to make me forgive you, it didn't work.
I still scoff at Nintendo presenting curated save states as "Special Versions".
Yes, that'll fill the absence of no new NES games.
I mean if nothing else this can be fun to mess around with.
Isn't this simply the game with a savestate?
Lame...
@RupeeClock Hey yeah, y'know, this is literally what that Japanese man got arrested for a couple weeks ago with Breath of the Wild, what the heck?? I know the guy didn't own the rights or whatever, but still.
Would be more special if they released a hacked ROM where super mushrooms turn you into Frog Mario, or Hammer Mario or Tanooki Mario.
Very easy to not be excited about this..
These are the most superfluous additions to the NES/SNES Online libraries. Whish I could hide them from the menu so they don't clutter it up, they're even gross to look at. If Nintendo wants to make their hard old games more accessible, that's fine, but they typically start you off in the middle of the game (or in this case the end), so it makes no sense. Starting a new file in Mario 3 after you beat it literally fills your inventory with P wings. Why not make that the SP version if you're going to do one? So weird.
I would enjoy this more if it was on World 1.
Played it and completed it on the original SNES Mario All Stars back in the day, so no interest in this
Mmm, save state goodness! Definitely the best addition yet to NSO!
@Not_Soos "Whish I could hide them from the menu so they don't clutter it up, they're even gross to look at."
I'm the same. I actually like the NSO, but I can't get behind these abominations. Totally superfluous with save states and rewind already part of the service.
@Angelic_Lapras_King You're the first person outside of myself I've seen bring this up.
Is this in hopes that they would be forgiven for the terrible games we got this month?
Honestly, myself, I don't even care about the random and pretty bad NES and SNES games. I can find enjoyment in those. It's the fact that we're drip fed them. Like, if you're going to make us wait at least make it KIND OF worth it..
@FineLerv Yeah, I mean the performance of their online games is objectively bad and I won't defend that, but $20/year for almost every major first-party NES and SNES game, Tetris 99 and Pac-Man 99, and save data insurance is kind of a steal. Three SNES games on the Wii U Virtual Console would have cost more than that. The appeal in replaying those games is definitely starting to wear off though, so I hope Nintendo puts N64 games on there soon. Not sure if they ever will, but fingers crossed.
I'm trying to think of some obscure SNES / NES games that people would actually appreciate.
There are games like Gimmick!, Little Samson, and Magical Pop'n that are ridiculously expensive on the secondhand market, and are actually really good unique sidescrollers.
Then they could also expand the RPG side of things, because aside from Breath of Fire, there just aren't any at all. Even if we ignore DQ and FF, there are other RPG options. People would for sure appreciate the Quintet trio - Soul Blazer, Illusion of Time and Terranigma. And don't forget the ActRaiser games also!
What was great about the Virtual Console is you got a wide range of games to choose from.
What was great about the NES and SNES minis is you got a tightly curated selection of greats.
Switch Online just seems a mess. There's actually loads of interesting things on there and tons of quality games, but it feels diluted. They would be better off just stopping the updates.
@NinChocolate 🤣 this is the truth. It’s like they wanna see how much they can challenge me to be not excited…
@Not_Soos
It is a stupid lobbyistic japanese Law.
I don't know any other Country that is that strict.
These special versions are so lame. And SMB3 is easy enough to beat. What does it do, drop you right in the princess's prison cell?
@Not_Soos I believe it was because he was modifying switch hardware to do so. Not because of the save states.
@greenwichlee This stance some people have that Nintendo should just stop updating altogether is baffling to me. Even if you inexplicably would rather have no games than obscure ones, maybe the people who actually have an interest shouldn't be punished for your distaste?
I will say I'm more likely to play this version of SMB3 than any of the other games being added to the service today. That's not saying much though.
@EarthboundBenjy How about Super Turrican (The NES one, not the SNES one that's in the Turrican compilation on eShop)? It was programmed entirely by Manfred Trenz (creator of the series and creator of games like Giana Sisters and Katakis), doesn't use any mapper chips at all (because the IP owner at the time was really stingy), yet still manages to be amazing (because Manfred Trenz is a programming wizard)
Also, I think Japan needs to take a bit of a backseat now when it comes to old games because people seem to be acting like non-Japanese regions (especially Europe and the UK) didn't do jack for the gaming industry
EDIT: On another note, where did that editors get that weird reshaded edit of the Japanese SMB3 box art from?
Keep complaining. The next update won't include Earthbound anyways hahahaha.
Meh. Warp whistled can easily get you to level 8. But at least you tried, Nintendo....
Nintendo fanboys - an experiment in how self entitled it's possible for human beings to be.
Where's my J E L L Y B O Y special edition, Nintendo?
"8 wardrobe changes? But there are only 6 power ups."
> includes small Mario and tanooki statue
Aaaaaaaaaaaand they’re not even trying.
Claymates being the exception, of course.
NINJA APPROVES CLAY SUPER ACTION
Nice, thanks Nintendo.
Sooooooooo, now they're going to release "special" versions of games now?....Alright, cool....
...
NSO is still a complete joke.
This is worse than nothing. SPs are abominations
I never forgot on the back of the NES box was a level that was not found in the actual final game. I remember calling Nintendo so many times asking how to find that level and they kept trying to explain it was just an early build, but I was not so easily fooled as a kid, I just kept calling back 😂😂 I wish they'd have released a build with new levels.
There is a lot of salt in this comments section
@Bunkerneath I still play it on my nes and on all stars. Great game with no need for a SP. literally is one of the easiest Mario’s out there which is what made it so popular.
@Darknilious I myself care less for any of the SP titles although I know others have fun with them. I am just happy to be able to play all these classics on the go. They work well with the small screen and are usually what I play while kn the go because of such. Newer games in a smaller screen don’t work so great so much to me.
@greenwichlee how is it diluted? Just because you don’t like the games doesn't mean others don’t. Also it has to do with rights as well. Nintendo has to pay these companies to put games on NSO compared to the companies get a kickback if they are sold as a virtual game, that makes a huge difference in the decision making and doesn’t art all mean Nintendo hasn’t reached out to companies asking them to allow the use of said games on NSO. There is more to it than just adding games.
For you to just be selfish just like all the other haters is beyond me. Just be thankful you get anything and if you don’t like what they have don’t subscribe, it is simple as that. It baffles me how people whine about something but yet still lay for it or better yet whine about something their not even paying for or using. Humans have literally became to greedy.
@Dirty0814
Long as you don’t try to speed run it.
From a speed running standpoint the no warps category for Mario 3 is absolutely grueling and probably the hardest Mario game to speed run.
I don’t envy the people who have held that world record. I’d have shot myself. The RNG in Mario 3 is appalling.
Could had just give us the one with all the P-Wings but this will do just fine.
@Joeynator3000 Uh, they've been doing that for months
@hypercoyote Er, that actually was an prototype, or rather, a mockup
https://tcrf.net/Prerelease:Super_Mario_Bros._3
@Joeynator3000 Just be glad you can play any of them free of charge. In another parallel world, instead of the $20 a year subscription we would had to pay an access fee everytime we want to try em.
@Not_Soos "The appeal in replaying those games is definitely starting to wear off though, so I hope Nintendo puts N64 games on there soon. Not sure if they ever will, but fingers crossed."
N64 and Game boy Advanced would be great. Though, even then I'd be looking for the B tier games instead of the Triple A stuff that I've already played to death (and own on the Wii U).
As a SMB3 addict I approve of this, any reason to revisit that game brings me joy.
Nintendo never ceases to amaze me with just how lazy they are
Starts with 35 lives. Nice touch.
Aaaawwwwssooommmeee!!!!!!!!!!
I mean come on, It's the best game ever made, You get all the suits straight off the mark, 35 lives to get you through the best challenges on the game AND ITS FREE!!!!
@The-Nate You just completed my childhood 😂😂😂😂
@FineLerv One obscure title I'd love to have on N64 is the Goemon game they released on there.
To those curious about why they didn't make this SP version the "Game 2" version that fills your inventory with P-Wings... why not just beat this one with the costumes and then you'll have the same effect regardless? You'll get to experience that version of the game, as well as what Nintendo are aiming for with this one.
@RupeeClock It's silly, but they don't have to do it at all, I mean I don't get the feeling that if they didn't release these "special" versions that we'd receive extra games in their place. These seem to just be a little extra bonus that they just as easily could not have done at all.
