Earlier today, The Pokémon Company gave us official release dates for Pokémon Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl and Pokémon Legends: Arceus. All the details are here if you missed the announcement; Legends: Arceus is the only surprise, launching fairly earlier than we would have guessed in January 2022.
But enough of that. We're here to show you the boxarts for both (or should we say, 'all three'?) of these upcoming titles. The new Diamond and Pearl remakes unsurprisingly feature their respective legendary beasts, both with their jewels shining for good measure:
Legends: Arceus has gone for the classic Zelda: Breath of the Wild 'hero-looks-down-into-a-vast-green-valley' approach. All the Pokémon surrounding our hero Trainers reminds us of the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon boxarts, which isn't a bad thing at all:
Are you liking the designs? Tell us in the usual place.

The Legends one is beautiful but the BDSP ones... aren’t. Use drawings, not 3D models!!!
@nessisonett I agree. Legends one looks good!
But man I am so over there being 2 copies of each Pokemon game. ESPECIALLY 2 copies of the remakes.
They're all decent. But even if they were outright butt ugly, it's all about the game in the box in the end.
@nessisonett Maybe it was a decision meant to convey the transition to 3D assets? That being said I totally agree. Much like the chibi character models, these aren't appealing.
The BD/SP ones are pretty terrible but so are the in-game visuals so it's fitting in a way.
The Legends Arceus one is pretty nice.
@Broosh Both Dialga and Palkia look like they’ve stepped on Lego.
That just proves more that Diamond & Pearl Remakes happening only because fans wanted them that much not because they wanted to make. But for me I don't care about such a things like reasons why they making the game.
Hmmmm. ORAS had the Primal forms of Groudon and Kyogre on the box art. These guys just have... Well, a brilliant diamond and a shining pearl. No new forms then?
The 3D rendered artwork for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl are a really nice throw-back to the presentation of the games back in that generation, and have much better visual design and composition than Sword and Shield (especially that fugly expansion pass physical release).
And the Legends Arceus cover might be one of my favourite from the series yet, even if it's blatantly doing the same thing as BotW.
I have a hunch Pokémon Go will even getting a loading screen in the future directly inspired by that Legends Arceus cover art.
The Legends art looks really nice.
The BDSP arts do remind me of the original box arts which is good, but now
I’m worried the remakes might be too faithful.
Maybe I should just skip BDSP and get Arceus with how close the release dates are.
Now im even more hyped for legends
The Legends box art is gorgeous. Surprising it's out so soon after the remakes, hope Gamefreak give it all the attention it needs, can't wait to play it
Legends looks like a fan made box art.
The only things I don't like about these remakes is that Nintendo won't remake the third version (Yellow, Crystal, Emerald, Platinum, etc.). To me the third version is usually the best one. The Arceus boxart does look nice, had like an RPG feel to it while the two remakes look like they just use stock images from the originals.
Not crazy about them personally. Doesn't mean I won't grab them though!
Are Palkia and Dialga… you know…
I like the Style of the Remakes and i am Happy to get a oldschool Pokemon Game with (hopefully) the same or more Content.
The newer once where lackluster in their Endgame.
I like blue, will buy Diamond ^^
I was going to get pearl digital but wow, I need that boxart.
I really like the desing for Legends.
BD and SP look like we already knew it was gonna look, I mean, none of the Pokémon boxarts look amazing (besides Blue and Red, and Silver and Gold). They really don't put that much effort on them it seems. Still like the overall consistent art though.
Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl box arts are just terrible.
Arceus is done just right! It reminds me of BotW art a little
Palkia looks awesome on the Shining Pearl cover! I really like them all tbh
@RupeeClock Loads of fantasy adventure games have that style of art with the character on a grassy cliff and a vast view ahead of them e.g. Zelda NES, Neutopia, xenoblade, Fairune etc
I like the Arceus artwork... just feel they could have gone with some more fine detail? It's a perfectly nice box Art, I just feel it's a pretty poor introduction to the world we are going to be exploring... makes me start to wonder how good the world is actually going to be versus the potential and expectations...
Gotta agree with the majority of the comments in which ones are terrible and which one is done well! That's +1 for Legends then.
BD and SP box art looks like they're in pain. This is fitting.
BDSP box art is terrible. I might skip the remakes and just get Legends.
the BDSP art just looks like pokemon battle revolution's to me
Pokemon fans are weird. The Box arts are 3D renders for games that are supposed to be nostalgic. I think the fan base just like to complain.
I don't know if they are deliveratly trying to put people off with the Diamond and Pearl remake style but they are doing just that. Both with the game and the boxart.
I get why they went for that style in the game (faithful remake and all that) and I get why they made that box art (symilar renders than the original. It actually reminds me of Battle Revolution) but it still looks... off.
Although the Legends Arceus box art actually looks quite well. Even if it seems like they copied BoTW homework and changed it a little.
D/P box arts look way too dramatic... Legends on the other hand looks okay
Pokemon Legends Arceus looks awesome! I can't wait to play that game.
Both look really good imo, the 3d models being on the box compared to the usual 2d artwork is a nice change.
Everyone who dislikes these box arts is objectively wrong. They look great. Games will be great too, no doubt about it.
Those are some terrible 90’s CGI box arts and I hate them
I'm a bit skeptical about how Legends Arceus will turn out, but I've liked everything I've seen so far, and that includes the box art.
Those BD/SP boxarts though, lmao. Those ReBoot-looking covers will NOT be gracing my shelf.
The Arceus one is absolutely gorgeous, I really like it!
The 3D renders for the remake, though, look pretty rough to me.
Dialga is crooked, the angle of his neck makes the framing awkward. I know my art composition professor would have looked at me funny if I had done this and presented it to him. To me it's indicative of the amateurish level of polish the Pokemon games have been receiving lately. Luckily Legends looks better, though the bland valley ahead of them is kind of off-putting. Their journey to the generic volcano is full of lots of grass and a few bushes it seems, how exciting.
@Broosh It isn't really the models, I'd say it's more of the lighting and colors.
@nessisonett I can't unsee them stepping on Lego now... It's perfect.
@CosmoXY No, art is subjective, also the the BDSP models looks kinda soulless, but that's just my opinion.
Yes, I think AL is nice.
@larryisanassman I strongly disagree with your statement. 90s cgi was FAR uglier. The BD/SP covers are still pretty ugly though.
LA looks good. But not a fan of the art on the others. They look too old school CG.
@Tamale Fair enough. Whatever their art direction was, it's probably fair to say it could use some work 😅
The "Legends Arceus" one. I expected a glorious shot of Arceus, but this one is cute and candid
The hero shot is infinitely better than "main character guy stands dramatically looking toward the camera holding a weapon"
I feel like the box arts for Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl would look better if the logo was at the top.
Legends arceus proves that boxarts look much better when they are reflective of the actual game, rather than literally just stock photo of main legend and nothing else.
I know its tradition but still.
@Screen honestly faithful is a bit more better.
RE 3 remake wasn't great because it cut out a lot of content and RE 2 remake was well received more.
Nintendo hired people from fiver for those BDSP arts.
Me: reads comments
Also me: Pokemon fans are funny.
Jokes aside, the BDSP arts are fine but yeah they could use some polishing up.
@BenAV Genuinely curious. If you're referring to the chibi style of BDSP then you mean the chibi style of the games prior to XY were terrible for you too?
These look better than the SwSh boxart choices, tbh. I'm really hoping that BDSP start looking better before release. Legends Arceus will undoubtedly look better by launch, but BDSP look so much further along and are so much more disappointing to me.
So regular old Dialga and Palkia on the cover? Guess no new forms then, which is disappointing. I also would’ve liked Legends Arceus’ box art to feature Arceus, but it still looks beautiful as is.
@Tamale Well everyone is entitled to their opinion, as long as everyone realizes that unless they’re opinion is the same as mine it’s wrong. This artwork is simply perfect in every conceivable way.
That Legends boxart is gorgeous.
All 3 look fine to me.
@Zyph Nah, I think for the most part the older games have a lot of charm that still hold up pretty well today. In this case, I think the remakes look significantly less attractive than the originals.
The box-art for the remakes isn’t amazing but it looks fine still. Certainly better than the boring box-art for Sword and Shield that just had 2D JPEGs of the legendaries on nearly full white backgrounds.
The Legends box-art... is beautiful. It’s basically a blend of Mystery Dungeon and Breath of the Wild artwork. Looks terrific. Really excited for both of these games!
It just occurred to me that the Pokemon Legends Arceus box art is significant simply because it doesn't contain two separate versions. Even the old Mystery Dungeon games liked to release in pairs. Absolutely gorgeous box art, and it makes me want it even more.
@Zyph There is a vast difference between pixel art of the old games, and chibi assets reminiscent of generic mobile games.
BDSP simply missed the mark with its art style, no doubt consequently because Game Freak commissioned a mobile developer to make it.
The 3D ones are terrible.
I just wish that the Legends: Arceus art incorporated Arceus itself in some way.
It also seems insulting that I'll effectively be paying double for BD/SP compared to the far superior looking Legends: Arceus.
I'm also disappointed with BD/SP as the art more or less confirms that there won't be new forms for the legendaries which makes me even less enthusiastic for them than I already am.
@CosmoXY I hope you're joking.
BDSP box-art is pretty nice not gonna lie. WAY better than SWSH’s for sure.
Looking at them reminds me of the Japanese movie poster for the Rise of Darkrai movie.
So, did it take them 5 minutes to make the BDSP box art or was it only 4? Legends Arceus looks great but wow, ILCA really skimped on the artwork. Anyone can do that in Blender fairly easily using the in-game models.
"They accidentally put the switch logo on these games with ps2 graphics"
Now if only the developers could improve on Arceus like in terms of graphics and framerate.
Graphically it doesn’t look terrible but I can see improvement in that though
I loved the 3D Dialga and Palkia, I have no idea why are some complaining. It just looks gorgeous. Loved the Legends Arceus too.
to let people know it is going to be opened world. Legends looks like BOTW cover. very clever.
I think they look fine. I'm looking forward to them all.
Pokemon box art has never been the main attraction for me. The only ones I can think of that made any real impression were B/W2 and Sun/Moon. Maaaybe X/Y. The rest are almost always generic shots of box legendaries that have very little effort put into them. Even the Let's Go! games had better covers than some main entries.
@Ulysses I don't want to dismiss a game just because of who's developing it. Just because they're a "mobile" dev doesn't warrant us to judge their pedigree. At least not yet. That's being narrow minded IMO. It's not their fault they had to make and port games to mobile. As a matter of fact ILCA is not just a mobile dev and they're a relatively new studio. They don't have their own IP and the games they worked on was only commissioned/contracted work. Personally I would give them the benefit of the doubt. It's still DP at the end of the day.
The way I see it the hate comes from the fact it's not going for the newer styles and not because whether they generally don't like how it looks. You already answered this and you say you don't like it so point taken.
I get it. Art is subjective. You either like it or hate it. But dismissing the game's art because of the developer is kinda ignorant. Sorry. Game mechanics, design and execution is another story though and a valid complaint to the dev. If they screw that up then yeah they screwed up.
@BenAV That's fair.
@SpaceboyScreams saying these box arts look awkward is like saying Vermeer’s Girl with a Pearl Earring looks awkward. These are nothing less than modern works of art. The games will be top tier amazing too.
@Zyph Good points, and as you said, it's too early to make snap judgments until I see the game at launch. You're right that art is subjective, and I'm just salty that the remake is retaining the 2D top-down perspective, yet still moving on from the pixel art style. They could have commissioned an HD2D-like remake, for instance! Perhaps the chibi characters will grow on me more. The other aspects to the graphics actually look quite good all things considered. So, I'll just have to wait and see.
Like you said, hopefully they execute the game itself well. This must be one of their most high-profile projects yet!
The BDSP one... I always thought that with these TCG-quality artworks, the games would fly off the shelves really quick.
I'm still expecting new forms for these legends though.
But the Legends Arceus one appears as if it was inspired by BoTW's main artwork. It's looks really nice. But what it lacks, is Arceus itself!
