@LikelySatan Dread was good but pretty light on characters and lore, which can make progression feel a bit of a to-do list instead of an organic journey. What little it does have is pretty cool though, and Samus’ movement is so satisfying! The Shantae games are pretty nice, iconoclast is good, I hope to try Ender Lillies some time. I’m not big on the gruesome gore looks of blasphemous which is pretty popular in the genre.
I also love "Metroidvanias" but have not enjoyed my experiences with the actual Castlevania series.
I do like Metroid, but I wouldn't rate them as my favorite of the genre either other than maybe Fusion.
Maybe I should just say I enjoy "Hollow-likes"?
@Darkly is the first one worth playing? I have an uninformed impression that it’s basically a stripped down version of the second without much unique to offer
Really surprised Unicorn Overlord isn’t doing more. I guess it’s the sort that certain people are in to and they got it early. I’m loving it, personally.
Man… TotK is better in a vacuum, but considering that it was the follow-up to BotW I don’t think it reached its potential (such as deeper lore or improved dungeons).
A lot of the appeal seems to have been centered around creativity of fuse and ultra hand, but I pretty much never built things because it rarely seemed necessary or even efficient.
Still.. it’s hard to imagine going back to BotW after having gotten used to ascend, my own mansion, and the improved towns..
On the last boss of Metroid Prime Remastered and I’m so ready to finish this game and sell it. First person Metroid is just not for me. Glad I saw what the hype was about, but I can’t wait to get back into Unicorn Overlord and possibly a little Tactics Ogre Reborn .
Plugging away at Metroid Prime Remastered and it’s strange. I don’t find it that fun but I also want to finish it, like it’s juuuust entertaining enough to keep me going. That Unicorn Overlord demo sold me on the game, so I look forward to starting that one later
Finally done with TotK (until I’m ready to revisit it for those last 65 koroks and 20 sidequests, some day) and have immersed fully into Metroid Prime, which I’ve never tried before, having long been a fan of the 2D games. It’s fun, but to be honest I’m more interested in wrapping up my first playthrough of Tactics Ogre: Reborn, and I happened to try out the Unicorn Overlord demo and was completely blown away. Looking to get that one soon! We Switch owners really have an embarrassment of riches, don’t we?
I remember finding one left at Walmart about 2 weeks after launch. The sales guy was just walking toward me when I asked about it and he said “oh, you just answered my phone call,,” walks back to the desk phone and says “our last one just sold” and then unlocked it for me! BotW was all I played for like 6 months.
For me, it is the greatest console of all time. Great functionality, and so so many amazing games. It’s been a wonderful time to be a Nintendo fan.
@jolteon23 Sometimes Demos convince me not to buy a game (Octopath II, Triangle Strategy, Mario vs Donkey Kong), but the Unicorn Overlord Demo had the opposite effect. I went from thinking it looked overly convoluted to knowing I have to have it, and I'm really looking forward to playing more!
Totally relate to that bit about Okami. I’d been so looking forward to playing it and it started out strong but I soon lost interest. The combat bored me and I felt kind of lost in the world. Also had trouble with the 3D platforming and taking falls that wasted lots of time. I didn’t get far before selling it away.
I prefer Angel Island and Icecap, but Marble Garden is good — so many giant rings to find! I always get to enjoy super form there.
Considering S&K as part of Sonic 3 I also prefer all of those zones except the desert.
Man S3&K still has yet to be topped for best Sonic game imo. The Super Emeralds plot line is so cool, and the boss feels less out of nowhere than other sonic games.
I have always loved these and felt like this one expands well on everything the first had to offer! The battle system is better than most turn-based games but still, it’s just turn-based. I never related to the “verbose” complaints, but maybe when I replay it now after many years I’ll be less entertained by it.
@Daniel36 I probably was the target demographic when I picked it up at age 14, but I feel like the plot is pretty gripping, the battles are fun (though the encounter rate does get a little high) , and the world is quite interesting. I hear people complain about the long conversations but I never minded it. We’ll see how I feel when I give these a replay after I wrap up TotK.
If I sell one, there’s probably some reason I don’t want to own that one anymore, like it irritated me or in the case of AC:NH, was too addictive without being fun.
I love this pair and appreciate NL showing it love. I hope it will generate enough interest to revive the series, but that’s probably not very plausible. If you haven’t played them, I’d say that the combat is more engaging than most turn-based games imo, and the dungeon/overworld puzzles are the best I’ve seen in any rpg!
@Yoshif3 you may have gotten dozens of responses already but my opinion on Dark Dawn is that it fails as a sequel because it doesn’t feel like it takes place in the same world as the previous games, and commits the sin of undercutting the victory of last game by “oh actually there are side effects” Not to mention there are very few returning characters and those who do appear don’t feel very consequential or continuous from before. That said I do like the new party members pretty well. Over all it felt more like an inferior reimagining than a proper sequel.
@Ryu_Niiyama I don’t think anyone’s painting anything as worse than it was. One bit of context that affects what you are saying about the nature of business pitches is that Itoi and Miyamoto were already well-acquainted at this time, and in fact Miyamoto looked up to Itoi when he was new to the industry.
Content creators and media have been going on about this for years, but I don’t think the average consumer sees the switch as old or behind. If the games are fun and the functionality is cool, people are interested. Personally, I do find it disturbing to hear the fan running now…
This is the only farming sim I’ve played and I remember it fondly, but it sounds like it’s best left in the past. Very funny review! 5/10 sounds generous.
Can’t wait to try Cocoon, MarioRPG, and Metroid Prime! Unfortunately I’m too busy with TotK to get to any of those quiiiiiute yet. Pikmin 4 was good too, even though I was personally a bit letdown after 3 deluxe.
Considering the kid intentionally shared the images with friends — friends who knew about 4chan no less — I'm guessing this was more like a teenager. Bet it was a wakeup call that his actions could have such drastic consequences.
@Citrus_Architect @Not_Soos I think it often comes down to a kind of tribal mentality that sacrificing the infidel is the only way to keep ourselves pure. Mercy is seen as endorsement while punitiveness is seen as moral character.
@Crono1973 if the reason SoS included him is because of his charitable donations then yes, you are right. But I thought it was more because of his support for their game, which is not the less true because of his crimes.
Hm…
I have no scruples about Jirard being punished for his fraudulence, and I do think he deserves to lose his YT career, but I assume whatever he did for this game and its creators is no less true because of his sins.
Thus SoS removing him like that strikes me as pretty ungrateful. I think it’s ok to have the perspective “we’re grateful for what he did for us personally and sorry to learn that he was morally bankrupt in other arenas.” I feel like there’s some nuance to be had in that even bad people have some good in them, and even good people have some bad. If they really had a friendship with him as he asserted, a true friend wouldn’t disown you until after pushing you to admit and make up for your wrong behavior first.
Again, I am no defender of The Completionist.. just not in favor of rewriting history to pretend life was more ideal than reality.
I’ve loved zelda for over 20 years, but this kind of thinking is narrow-minded, and the worst thing about Nintendo to me. How restrictive would the gameplay be if they just made the story match up? They’ve already made it abundantly clear that the story isn’t a major focus for the development, and it’s not like they’d be limited in location or characters..

Marioland 2 is one of my all time favorites; I personally enjoy it more than any of the Wario games and even more than most Mario games.

Having a blast with Unicorn Overlord and only feeling slightly guilty to not be revisit TotK for those remaining 20 sidequests and ~60ish koroks.

@OrtadragoonX huh, I never had any problem with Tidus. The only character I didn’t care for was Kimari and the other Ronso

For the ones I’ve played:
