Re: Expect More Open-World Zelda Games Going Forwards, Suggests Eiji Aonuma

DaniPooo

I like the open world approach going forward, but I hope that they will get even better at building their world with purpose and charm. And I hope they continue to look back at what made their older titles so great and also use that as inspiration going forward.

I don't think every Zelda going forward has to have the same level of freedom as Breath of the wild and Tears of the Kingdom.
(Not that I don't enjoy that)

But I really wouldn't mind Nintendo mixing old Zelda with new Zelda and restricting some things in order for the gameplay to work.

For instance, I like the old concept of collection the "skill-items" like the hook shot as you progress in the game instead of gaining all skills within the first hour of the game. It gradually gives you more and more freedom and the feeling that your character is getting more and more powerful.

Heck I could even see them locking climbing vertical surfaces behind some "climbing gloves".

And maybe add underwater exploration back as well.

I like the new temples in tears of the kingdom, however I found them to be a bit small and short compared to a classic Zelda game. But still a step in the right direction I suppose.

Re: Zelda Boss Wanted Certain Tears Of The Kingdom Areas In BOTW, Prevented By Wii U's Limitations

DaniPooo

@rjejr Oh I don't think flying in it self has ever been an issue.
Skyward Sword had flying but it was handled very differently.
The world above the clouds was separated from the world below basically with a load screen, Landmarks in the sky such as the Skyloft island was rendered as a lower quality model while flying, only loading you into the actual island when entering. (Again load screen).
That way they could save resources and make it run well on the Wii.

But in Tears of the Kingdom everything seems more or less seamless. And that requires more horsepower. The land of Hyrule seems to still be loaded even while being up in the sky.
You can jump off the island and dive down and there's no load screens. The LOD is adjusted on the fly (pun not intended).
Same thing while you're walking around in Hyrule, would can see Islands floating up there in the sky, meaning that they are still being processed and kept in memory as some level.

It's hard to say whether it would run well on Wii U or not, It would probably be difficult, but with enough optimisation maybe it could, but you have to remember that the Wii U was struggling with Breath of The Wild at times, and Tears of the Kingdom has even more going on.

Re: Poll: What Do You Think Of The New Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Font?

DaniPooo

I wish they were a little bigger and bolder, But they are better than the modern fonts.

What I really don like with Square Enix's attempts to remaster old games in 2D is that the visuals are not coherent.

So I'll give an example, You have "pixels" on the world and characters, and then you have pixels on the font and hud, but the pixels are different sizes so it doesn't blend well together.

Then you have the classical "CRT" filter mode, it aplies the scanlines to everything, but the blur effect is not applied to the hud or text-boxes.

I wish everything was a bit more coherent I guess, that would certainly raise the feeling of quality.

Re: Poll: Which Was Your First 'Final Fantasy'?

DaniPooo

@jump Please explain why you think so.

The game is far from a perfect game but very far from rubbish in my opinion.

It has a growth system that takes some getting used to and that system has flaws, but if you look past that, then it's actually a really good game in my opinion.

The game has an interesting story, good (but not great) characters, some of the best music in video game history.
It had great graphics (for the time), fun and functional battles (At least a bit more to offer than Pokemon battles, but still nothing special).

There's lots of optional collectables in the game, plenty of side-quests, A built in card game that is actually easy to learn and fun.

So what's the common complaints?
"It's tedious to Draw magic", "the junction system is too complex" and "the junction system is exploitable".
Some people may point out how you can mess up so that the game get's super difficult by over-levelling due to how stats and level scaling for mobs works..

I mean if you are that dense not to realise that power leveling makes the enemies tougher before they start to one-shot you, then perhaps you should go back to Call of Cuty or GTA.

Is the game perfect, no.. It has many flaws in fact. But it's far from rubbish.

But please share why you have your opinion.

Re: Talking Point: Should Link Have Voice Acting In The Next Zelda Game?

DaniPooo

Link getting a voice would go against the core concept of the character. What Link is supposed to be is a 'link' between the game and the player, he is supposed to be your avatar in the game.

It's easier to imagine you are Link if he is a silent character as that will allow you to use you own imagination on what Link might be thinking or what he would say in a certain situation.

This is not just my theory of why Link has no dialogue, it comes from Miyamoto himself.

Personally I prefer them keeping the tradition, it adds to the feel of a Zelda game and I see no need for Link talking.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Stop Pretending Switch Can't Run Call Of Duty?

DaniPooo

@Selim Yes you can play the Witcher 3 @ around 30 FPS and a very low resolution as well a huge downgrades to the graphics in general.

Would you enjoy playing a competitive first person shooter aiming for headshots online at that resolution and performance? I know I wouldn't.

In the case of the Witcher 3 it's playable because it's a different type of game that works better at that performance.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Stop Pretending Switch Can't Run Call Of Duty?

DaniPooo

@Selim The Wii is weaker than the Switch in every way possible, heck the Switch is almost powerful enough to emulate the Wii. The power is not the issue. Also those CoD games running on Wii whatever it was, that's not the games anyone want to run on the Switch anyway.

The Switch is more than capable of running a CoD like game.

Whether the engine is upgraded to support Switch and games ported over is an entirely different story. And if there a CoD game ported over to the Switch there will be massive downgrades in graphics and resolution in order to get it running well.

I imagine that they would aim for 60fps since people play it competitively online.
They would probably also want to keep the resolution at around 720p at a minimum. (Possibly upscaled 1080p)

That would leave them with no other option than heavily sacrificing graphical quality like lighting, shadows, LOD, textures, draw distance, particle effects and other elements that makes the game pretty.

In the end you would get a game that plays alright but looks "meh..." compared to every other platform.

If they went the extra mile then they could have a mode aiming for 30fps that looks a bit better for the single player campaign.

At least that's the way I see it.

Lot's of time, money and work to make it happen though, not entirely sure they will think it's worth it this late into the game.
Many people including developers are expecting Nintendo to reveal their next system "soon", like later this year or next year..
Then it would be reasonable to expect the new hardware being released 2024/2025. Updating the engine to support Switch and porting a game over takes time so unless they have already started getting it done, they will not have much time.

And releasing a game like CoD right before gamers are migrating over to whatever's next does not seem like a good way to maximise profits.

No it wouldn't make much sense from a business perspective, even if the next console is backwards compatible.

They would probably rather wait to get their hands on new devkits (if they don't already have them) and aim for the next system.

At least for a game like CoD that is expected to be played online competitively. As they need to keep servers alive for many years after the release and that's quite a commitment for a console that is about to be replaced.

I say it's highly unlikely to happen, but not because the Switch, isn't powerful enough.

Re: Soapbox: Can We Stop Pretending Switch Can't Run Call Of Duty?

DaniPooo

Well, it's not a question of if the Switch has the power.
It's a matter of optimization, you could pretty much run any game on the Switch if you downgrade and optimise it enough.
However that takes time and money. You also need an engine that supports the platform and if it doesn't then you need to implement support for that specific platform as well and that also takes time.

The CoD games runs on the IW engine.
And correct me if I am wrong, Switch is not supported on that engine.

So really.. It would take a lot of motivation, funds and time to get CoD over to the Switch. But it's not impossible.

Re: Final Fantasy Pixel Remaster Series Launches On Switch Later This Month

DaniPooo

Getting very close to being what I would call definitive editions.
But it seems like they have still not added back extra content introduced in other versions.

Usually this extra content was optional endgame dungeons and super bosses as well as optional weapons and armour to obtain.

I was really hoping they would add this back for the console releases.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The New Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Trailer?

DaniPooo

@smithyo I don't know what you did expect, it's looks pretty spot on what I expected. We knew it would take place in the same Hyrule using the same engine with islands in the sky and some new abilities.

Only thing that bothered me a bit was that it sounds like they straight up reused music from breath of the wild. I think it would have done a lot to use all new original music.
But that's a minot nitpick.

Re: Video: Everything That Could Go Wrong With The Switch's Successor

DaniPooo

@Rika_Yoshitake Yeah I have not see Nintendo do something like that since the Gamecube and Gameboy Advance.

I believe that Nintendo is going to try to innovate as usual.

Just making a more powerful system without adding or removing anything is not innovation, and more something you would expect from Microsoft and Sony to be honest.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 1.2.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Updated Patch Notes

DaniPooo

@Zach777 I do agree with you, but maybe the apology was not the same as taking ownership from their point of view.
It's difficult to tell for me.

I am going to just say it, I am not Japanese and I am not going to pretend that I understand everything that these Japanese corporate giants are saying and doing. I honestly get chocked quite often.

And because I know that I don't understand their culture, I also know that it's pointless for me to try to read between the lines.

Re: Pokémon Scarlet & Violet Version 1.2.0 Is Now Live, Here Are The Updated Patch Notes

DaniPooo

@Zach777 Have Nintendo released any statement that their programmers are aiding GameFreaks in fixing these games?

Or is this just your assumption based on the fact that Nintendo has released an apology?

To be honest I would like Nintendo to get in there and actually making sure it's getting the quality of a 1st party Nintendo title.
But I am afraid that the apology was more like, on behalf of GameFreaks even if it's not clearly stated.

Re: Poll: What Did You Think Of The February 2023 Pokémon Presents, Then?

DaniPooo

Pokemon red & blue + Pokemon stadium transferpak functionality would have been enough to make me excited.

But instead I feel a bit disappointed, I guess the DLC for Scarlet and Violet is nice but it's cot coming out anytime soon, I hope they patch the game up before they release the DLC, it's not like they don't have the time and money to do it.

Tested the latest update, and I don't know maybe it feels a bit more stable, but I still encountered slowdowns and weird glitches where the world in the distance would "flicker" and also running into "invisible" Pokemon due to them not loading in fast enough.

Would be interesting to see someone make some sort of analysis of the latest patch performance compared to how it played on launch now that we have had a couple of patches.

Re: Talking Point: What Will Be Announced On Pokémon Day 2023?

DaniPooo

I would be delighted to see Pokemon Gen1-3 coming to NSO with Pokemon home compatibility and some sort of transferpack implementation. I am curious how they would deal with the "GB tower" feature though.

Are they going to make that actually work? or are they going to attempt to disable it somehow?

To me it seems entirely possible that they will try getting that to work.

Re: Feature: 22 Game Boy Advance Games We'd Love To See Added To Nintendo Switch Online

DaniPooo

I would have said Final Fantasy 1-6 (minus Final Fantasy III).
But now the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters are coming so there's not really any need for that. (Although the extra content is not in the Pixel Remasters)

Also there's no reason to get stuff that already exist on SNES online, like Yoshi's Island and the other Super Mario Advance games. (Super Mario Advance 4 is nice though as it ads some new features and levels that are not in the all-stars or NES versions of Super Mario Bros 3)

I guess my top pick would be Final Fantasy Tactics Advance.
And then Kingdom Hearts - Chain of Memories

And man.. They should bring over the Pokemon games both GB/GBC and GBA, and make sure that Pokemon Home get's compatible with them, that alone would almost be awesome enough to justify raising the price of Nintendo Online again

But they probably won't

Re: Mario Kart Tour Welcomes A Brand New Course In Piranha Plant Cove

DaniPooo

@AlexanderDaniels

You may be correct, or perhaps not. We'll see..

I am not saying that they will call their next game Mario Kart 9.

I am questioning how you can be so certain, because it's Nintendo we are talking about after all. Especially since you pretty much have no proof.

Nothing you said so far has been a proper proof that Nintendo count tour as a main title. It's just speculation and stuff that fits into your own logic.

For crying out loud, they are going to release the Yoshi's Island race course, this is completely based on the Yoshi's Island game.
Does that make Yoshi's Island a mainline Mario Kart game? According to your logic, it should right?

Re: Mario Kart Tour Welcomes A Brand New Course In Piranha Plant Cove

DaniPooo

@AlexanderDaniels Eh... Well that's YOUR logic.

"Mario Kart Tour was proven to be MK9 because Nintendo announced new content for MK8 Deluxe through the Booster Course." - I really don't see your point, How does this prove anything? All it tells me is that Nintendo just don't see the need of making a new Mario Kart game just yet because they can milk Mario Kart 8 a while longer. This does not prove that Nintendo won't release a new Mario Kart title on the next hardware and call it Mario Kart 9.

I mean they do not seem to count their Mario Kart arcade games as mainline, so who knows if they count a mobile title as mainline? It's impossible to know unless Nintendo themselves speak up on the matter.

Soooo, unless you get official words from Nintendo on the matter then NOTHING is proved. And don't even try to guess what Nintendo will/won't do, many have tried and failed.

Re: Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom Apparently Has The Biggest File Size Of Any First-Party Switch Release

DaniPooo

Huh, I never thought of Xenoblade Chronicles as Nintendo first party titles. But I guess they are since Nintendo is the publisher and these games are Nintendo exclusives. They are not developed by Nintendo though. However Monolith Soft is pretty much only developing for Nintendo these days.

Xenogears and Xenosaga had their home on Playstation and Playstation 2. The franchise was created by SquareSoft.

Re: "We Absolutely Apologize" For Pokémon Performance Problems, Says Nintendo Of Canada Manager

DaniPooo

I always find it amusing when the people who are the least involved with development of the games are apologizing for these kind of things and ensuring people that THEY are working on it.

I mean, I do understand that they are the PR people for Nintendo.
And the average Joe probably don't care about the detail on who exactly is working on it.

But I sort of think they should let Gamefreaks handle it, or at least tell the truth, that GameFreaks are working on it.

And I do wonder if Nintendo really need so many different PR offices? It's the internet age.. I'm sure it would be more efficient to consolidate all their regional expertise under one umbrella?

Re: Mario Kart Tour Welcomes A Brand New Course In Piranha Plant Cove

DaniPooo

@AlexanderDaniels

What!? what's is your logic? It's a mobile spin-off title.

It's like calling Uncharted Golden Abyss a mainline title.. Nintendo will obviously release a true successor to Mario Kart 8 at some point, and it will not be a mobile phone title, trust me.

I think that they will release a new Mario Kart main line title with their next hardware, it would be a weird if they reused Mario Kart 8 again.

Re: Zelda: A Link To The Past's Code Has Been Reverse-Engineered And Unofficially Enhanced

DaniPooo

@Fulkaffe This project already supports Widescreen, custom sprites and custom .msu-1 soundtrack. There's a Switch port if you own a hacked Switch. Runs and sounds like a dream

This one shows some widescreen (yes this works on the Switch)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i3p7Y79CJP4

And here's an example of an MSU-1 music replacement pack
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wEy0_WYE6pY (Yes this will also work on the Switch)

Re: Poll: Do You Want Weapon Degradation To Return In Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

DaniPooo

I think it would be great if each weapon still disappeared upon breaking. However it would be great if you could also prevent them from breaking. Like if you could see a durability meter for each weapon and could restore the durability of your weapons by visiting a blacksmith or something.

So now you would actually have a real proper reason to change out a weapon that is about to break when the game warns you.

Currently I find myself letting the weapons break, because I see no reason for running around with my bag full of weapons that can only take 1 or 2 more hits before breaking.

I would also like to see weapons and shield being upgradable.

Also a crafting system for making new weapons and shields would be welcome.

I think all of these things could work very well in the Breath of the Wild Hyrule, it's all about the freedom of doing whatever you want and always having something to do and a reason to just explore.

More reasons to gather material while exploring is welcome.

They just need to balance everything right, like don't make it too easy to restore durability on your weapons.
Make it somewhat expensive so that you perhaps only use the service for a few of your very best items.

Re: Soapbox: Zelda Should Be Given The Paper Mario Treatment

DaniPooo

I mean it looks charming, but nah there's no need for it if you ask me. They have the Paper Mario franchise which is selling ok I guess. Also I guess I am pretty darn tired of all the spinoff Zelda stuff.

If they made a Zelda spinoff RPG game then I would prefer if it focused on some other character than Link, Perhaps a new Tingle game, actually make that a R-rated Paper Tingle game, that would be delightful.

Re: Talking Point: After Pixel Remaster, What's Next For Final Fantasy On Switch?

DaniPooo

Yeah Final Fantasy XIII would probably run like garbage on the Switch unless SE actually hire someone to go the extra mile with the port. Why? Well the PC port still run like garbage on good hardware.

Technically, yes the Switch should be able to run a game like Final Fantasy XIII, however with the poor reception of that game and the work required to optimise the game for the Switch, I highly doubt that it will happen.

If they release Final Fantasy XIII for the Switch it'll probably be a cloud version (Like they did with Kingdom hearts)

Re: Random: Masahiro Sakurai Says He Prefers To Buy Video Games Digitally

DaniPooo

Everything I actually play on modern hardware is digital.
However I still buy some physical games just for collection. I keep these factory sealed, it's an investment and hobby.

It's similar with my gameboy and gameboy color collection. I buy boxed games, but I don't open the boxes if they are sealed or in good condition. If I play gameboy games then I use a flashcart or I play a digitally purchased version version on the 3DS.

Re: Best Of 2022: How Do Game Developers And Artists Feel About The Rise Of AI Art?

DaniPooo

I think AI generated art should only be legally be allowed to serve as inspiration for artists. Meaning that selling AI generated art or using AI generated art in products commercially would be illegal.

But the power of generating something out of an idea in less than a minute is a very powerful tool for any artist.
And I think it would be a big mistake to take that power away from artists and content creators.

If companies want to make money out of these AI tools then they should all be clear that they are to be used as inspiration and education and they should all take counter measures for selling results generated by their tools.

Suck as storing hashes for generated files. (sure it's easy to work around this, but at least they've done something)

The way they make money should be through subscription plans, sponsorships, and ads (if needed)

Just imagine that you are an artist working on a children's picture book about a pirate frog. Your first step would be to design the character right. So the ability to ask an AI service to generate a number of examples of different pirate frogs can be a really useful tool to get ideas and decide which direction you are taking you character.
