Re: Talking Point: If 'Switch 2' Is Backwards Compatible, What Will You Do With Your Switch?

DaniPooo

@GoshJosh And it's also the company who had completely free backwards compatibility on GBA, DS, 3DS, Wii and Wii U.
And made gameboy and gameboy advance adapters for SNES and Gamecube,

Sure they probably could try to make some money on the backward compatibility. But I think they probably go with next-gen patches or bind the backwards compatibility to the online subscription to get more people to sign up.

Re: Talking Point: If 'Switch 2' Is Backwards Compatible, What Will You Do With Your Switch?

DaniPooo

@GoshJosh That is very shortsighted you know.
They could actually take the PS5 route. Allow you to download the regular Switch 1 version for free, but then offer a next-gen patch for a small fee.

There's definitely ways for them to earn money on some on the backwards compatibility.

It wouldn't be the first time they do backwards compatibility.
And with the switch it's quite easy since it will almost certainly use a Tegra chip which will be the same architecture as that of the current Switch. So no emulation is really required, just a compatibility layer.

If the next Switch runs the same OS or an upgraded version of the same OS (Horizon), then there might not even be a need for a compatibility layer. Switch games would just run natively in that case (assuming that all switch libraries and dependencies are still present).

But yeah I would not rule out the possibility. It wouldn't make sense for them to not have the backwards compatibility.
Given the enormous player base, if they didn't include backwards compatibility then I think they run the risk of loosing players.

Games take longer and longer to develop and if the rumours are true that the next system will be released in 2024.
They are going to have a hard time getting a good lineup of launch titles ready, given that we got a new Mario and a new Zelda this year already.

But if they give the system backwards compatibility and make it so that it can give the Switch games next-gen patches.
Then in theory we could see a Breath of the Wild 4K Remaster and Mario Odyssey Deluxe (Or something like that) as well as perhaps Metroid Prime 4 at launch.

Plus all the players who transition over from the Switch will have their Switch games to play.

And that would probably be the best launch in the history of Nintendo as long as they market it well and the system is good.

Re: Reaction: What's Your Gut Feeling On The Zelda Movie News?

DaniPooo

I really can't imagine a live action Link that looks faithful to the original material without looking kinda cringe.

Also I can't imagine Link in live action being mute, but I also can't imagine him talk without a lot breaking the illusion that it's Link...

They have to be very careful to make it work.

Preferably the role would be played by a young and sort of feminine looking male actor. The character would be a man of few words (still capable of talking) but lot's of facial expression.

And the tunic would preferably be obtained later on in the movie and be similar to the Twilight Princess Green Tunic in color and detail.

I do not think that the green tunic could look cool or epic in live action no matter how much you try, it's the green color.
Going the twilight princess direction, making it a more dark and dull green would definitely help a bit. But I still think the only people who would find that cool are some kids and teens.

I think it would be great if Link show a facial expression of discomfort of having to wear it (Like in Wind Waker). This would sort of make it a well executed cringe. The audience would be like: "Ok it looks kinda weird but at least Link think so too". And that way it will be easier to just accept the outfit, it may even grow on the viewer over the remainder of the movie. But I think the first moment you see it is an important moment, they have to do that right.

I think the movie is going to have to be a bit lighthearted and not taking itself too serious at all time, but still not be a comedy.

I certainly wouldn't mind them taking inspiration from Ocarina of Time and Twilight Princess in tone and story telling.

There's going to have to be a lot of references to the games but I believe it can't retell the exact story of a specific game.
It's going to have to be a new Link and Zelda incarnation story.
And if they throw in an "Excuuuuuuuse me Princess!" somewhere what would make for a good chuckle.

It's would also be fun to see Link being rewarded a glass jar for helping someone in need. and being like "thanks... I think.."

Well it could be a decent movie if handled extremely carefully with a lot of heart.

But it's also extremely easy to mess it up.
Just have a too masculine Link and it immediately breaks the character. Have the character talk too much and it breaks the character, retell an already existing Zelda story and everyone will just compare it to the game and that's never going to be a fair match.

Since this is a Miyamoto project I doubt that it will draw much inspiration from Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in the over all tone of the movie. It's more likely that it will take inspiration from earlier Zelda games, and that Link will have an arsenal more similar to those games. Most likely Ganon and/or Ganondorf will be the main villain again because he's the best know Zelda villain.

But these are just my speculations based on my knowledge of Miyamoto's work and +30 years of playing the Zelda games.

Re: Soapbox: 'Switch 2' Doesn't Really Need Backwards Compatibility

DaniPooo

It didn't read the full article and I don't have to...

No the Switch 2 does not need backwards compatibility.

But consider this, most likely it will run on Nvidia hardware similar to that of the Switch (but more powerful)

Developing backward compatibility would be relatively simple, if they do not develop their own backwards compatibility then they give the hackers another reason to hack the systems and develop a Nintendon't like solution. (This is not what Nintendo wants)

And why wouldn't they? Backwards compatibility would ensure that units would fly off the shelves and if done right then it's easy money for devs as they could release cheap next-gen patches for their existing games, till will ensure a flow of money until they are done with whatever new stuff they are working on.

I can't really see any reason why they wouldn't go that route if they are indeed putting another Tegra chip in the new system.
Doesn't make any sense not to do it. since they can still earn lot's of money on existing games trough both next gen patches and new generations of gamers who gets the games for the first time.

It would be a missed opportunity

An about the hacking risk.. hmm..
Yes there is always a risk, but have you noticed that even to this date the only means we have of hacking a Switch is through hardware exploitation rather than software? I say it now once and for all, this thing will not be easy to hack.
Yes in the past there has been instances where backwards compatibility has been used for hacking a system.

However I do not think this will be the case with a switch 2, If they do it right from the start then they will designs the system in a way that it plays Switch games through a compatibility layer that has very restricted access to the system.
It should only include functions you need to play the games, not the entire Horizon OS like on the Wii U with the Wii mode.

Just the bare minimum do get games launched from a Home Screen.other than that I'm quite sure that Nintendo and Nvidia will try their best to improve the security from the last system, so I do not expect an early exploit like on the Switch.
That was a mess up and they likely learned a lesson from that.

Re: Poll: Do You Prefer Zelda: Wind Waker HD's Bloom Lighting Or The "Flat" OG?

DaniPooo

@NinChocolate what!? A blend between bloom and no bloom?
As a game dev you have always been able to control the strength of the bloom afaik.

and if you're mistaking bloom for cell shading, actually Skyward Sword was the first game to blend the cell-shaded style into the classic look. And it also reduced the bloom.

BOTW might have further refined the ideas that was implemented in Skyward Sword.

Re: Miyamoto Wasn't A Big Fan Of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Early Elephant Design

DaniPooo

@Yalloo You don't need text in a Mario game either. Not really.
Especially not a 2D Mario game. It's all very self-explanatory.
My kids don't speak English and they do not read English, however they never had any issue completing a Mario game, it's their favourite.

So I think Mario is the best when it's use of language is visual (Like a silent film), because that way everyone can enjoy the game equally, and it works fine with 2D Mario games.

I didn't have to read any manuals or in-game tutorials back in the 90s when I picked up and played Mario 1-World.

It only started getting somewhat useful to add language with Mario64 and later 3D Mario titles, even so, I beat Mario 64 without any English knowledge and collected all 120 stars when I was a kid, and not understanding all the textboxes was not really an issue for me.

Re: Miyamoto Wasn't A Big Fan Of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Early Elephant Design

DaniPooo

@ArcticEcho Look at the design of the elephant, it looks fat and stupid (Not implying that it looks stupid because it's fat)
It belongs with Peppa pig and Teletubbies and the like.

But if you don't understand the style that I am talking about. Look at the trunk and moustache of the elephant and the way they "Cast" self shadows, because of how much self shadows there are, it almost as if the elephant is made out of multiple different objects that are stacked together at different depth.
I am not a fan of the look

Compare that to the blocks (Which looks super flat and boring)

It just stands out as weird to me and more childish than usual.

If they made a 2D Mario game where they adapted his actual cartoon painted look, then I would be way more happy about it. Because I can imagine that would work really well in a 2D Mario title. And I am not talking about Super Mario super show.
I am more talking about like the style of the illustrations in some of the earlier games, like Super Mario Bros 3 and Super Mario World.

The New Super Mario Bros Series all had this very polished style where nothing was sticking out as out of place. Very coherent..

To me this game does not look like it has the same level of polish.

And it also looks more "cute" than even the new Super Mario Bros.

The extra talking flower just had me cringing. the elephant had me cringing and the style made me raise eyebrows

Re: Miyamoto Wasn't A Big Fan Of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Early Elephant Design

DaniPooo

@garfreek I don't think the visual style was the main complaint about the new super Mario bros series. But rather that the gameplay didn't evolve more.

I personally am for change, even visual change.

But I still think the style of a Mario game should aim to be very distinct Mario, and also feel friendly towards all ages.

That elephant character does not really look like a Mario character to me.

In Mario Odyssey there was a lot of things that stood out as out of place, but it worked because they made a whole thing about Mario visiting all these contrasting worlds.

But this game seems like it tries to appeals more to younger western children. At least that's my take.
That elephant looks like it was designed to show up in a Teletubbies episode.

Re: Miyamoto Wasn't A Big Fan Of Super Mario Bros. Wonder's Early Elephant Design

DaniPooo

I agree with Miyamoto, there's a few things I don't quite like from what I've seen so far. I do not like the talking plants, to me it looks like their attempt at getting speech into Mario.
But I really don't think it's needed in a Mario game.

I think previous games did it right by keeping it to a minimum.
"Mario, Help meee!" or "It's a me, Mario!". Like each line felt more impactful when they were so few and far between.

And I think that this new gave has a more cartoon'esque style than I really like. it's most obvious in the Elephant Mario character. To me it looks really bad, like a mix between Paper Mario and the New Super Mario Bros styles.

A mix that barely works. And it looks like a game for toddlers.
Sure Mario was always aimed towards children first and foremost.. But it always had a style that could appeal to anyone.
But I think I would feel awkward playing this game in public...

I don't know.. I will get the game and play it before spreading more negativity. But if I am disappointed then I will cry about it for the ears of the world.

Re: Pokémon World Championships Disqualifies Scarlet And Violet Pros Using Hacked Monsters

DaniPooo

@greengecko007 And then you have adult people managing to have a full time job and doing their dailies in games like world of warcraft without much complaint. If you think it's too much time to spend on a game, then play a different game? one that you have time to play.

But why are the Wow players not complaining? because there's no way to cheat there without a huge risk of getting banned from the game. Also pretty much the only way to cheat there is using bots, because the data is not stored locally on the device but rather lives on blizzards servers.
When there's no way to cheat then people just accept it, but if there is a way to cheat then people desperately tries to justify doing so.

Should GameFreaks eventually go the same route, then cheating will be reduced to pretty much 0.
Unless the players find glitches to exploit. But there would be no chance whatsoever to hack save files or directly modifying Pokemon. because the savedata stored on your console would just contain game settings and account information. Your actual game progress would be stored on a server and it would be inaccessible to you.

Re: Pokémon World Championships Disqualifies Scarlet And Violet Pros Using Hacked Monsters

DaniPooo

@twadebarcelona

Yes in my last paragraph I am not describing cloud game streaming. Like I said, cloud streaming is just a video stream, much like watching a YouTube video that you can send input back to.

Streaming data is a whole different approach, and it actually uses less data and is less prone to cause performance issues such as stuttering. (Since you're not reliant on a constant high data stream)

As for game devices being always online, Again, I was talking about in the future (Years from now). I believe that in the future most people will be constantly connected even in countries that suffer from poverty. Of course there might still be some countries where people still won't be that fortunate yet, but you know I think the last thing of those peoples mind is getting an expensive new game console..

And remember these are game companies, their function is making money and growth at all cost, their target audience are the people who can actually afford to buy their product. And most of these people are already on data plans.

Yes the PSVita tried allowing cellular data, but the mobile networks back then was not equipped for online gaming.
5G and beyond is definitely going to make it possible.

Re: Pokémon World Championships Disqualifies Scarlet And Violet Pros Using Hacked Monsters

DaniPooo

@twadebarcelona I did write: "eventually in a future where all your devices are always connected to the internet"

"Also, your final paragraph basically describes the way the cloud versions of games on Switch works."
No that's incorrect, Cloud versions are video streams and you send inputs through to their servers.
And that's not what I am talking about.

I am talking about the graphics being rendered on the machine, but data such as stats and encounters are being provided by servers.
Similar to how other online games work.

Re: Pokémon World Championships Disqualifies Scarlet And Violet Pros Using Hacked Monsters

DaniPooo

Good, I really like that they are doing this and I hope the trend continues, eventually in a future where all your devices are always connected to the internet, I hope they make Pokemon go always online and will actually ban people who use cheat techniques.

People keep saying that "It's an offline game so it doesn't hurt anyone if I cheat", well if only that was the case... The online portion of the game is full of hacked Pokemon, everyone knows it. Perhaps you are the exception who only cheat offline.
But man, you can take the hit of not being able to cheat for the greater good, can't you? Or are you gonna be an adult person crying over not being able to cheat in a Pokemon game.
Maybe you feel like you don't have time grinding to get the best Pokemon with perfect stats? What's the rush? And also what are you gonna do with those perfect Pokemon if you only play offline? Beat the Elite 4? LOL

The only realistic way I see cheating completely prevented is going full "always online" with Gamefreaks keeping a copy of your savefile and not letting you load your save if if does not match the one they have stored and also having your Pokemon and their stats always being located on the servers.
That would pretty much stop all cheating with the exception of glitch based cheating.

I am thinking that it should work kind of how MMO RPG's work, having a large portion of the game running on the servers and your device is more of less just dealing with controls, graphics rendering and sound.

Re: New Limited-Time Pokémon Scarlet And Violet Distribution Is Now Available

DaniPooo

@sanderev Yeah, I don't know how it has come to this but now everyone can easily get Mew, I got 3 on the Switch alone, with pretty much no effort.

One from poke ball plus, one from the gen 4 remakes because I own the "Let's Go" games, and now one from the code.

Mew used to be this special Pokemon that you had to work for, Usually involving getting your butt to a physical event location.

Now they just hand it out. Heck I could probably farm Mews by just replaying the Gen 4 remakes and transferring them to Pokemon home.

Re: Poll: Box Art Brawl: The Legend Of Zelda

DaniPooo

The Famicom version looks way better and actually represents the game better.

I have a lot of nostalgia for the NES version and it looks clean and good, but it doesn't represent what the game is about very well. Had they at least gone with the Triforce instead of the Shield, then it would have probably been the winner for me.

Re: Video: These Replacement Joy-Con Sticks Fix Drift Issues, But How Do They Feel In Practice?

DaniPooo

@demacho Drift is not only a thing on the Joy-Con's though. It's a quite common issue with the DualSense controller as well.

Hall-Effect has the potential so solve a real issue.
However, everything else needs to be good quality as well.
I would say that GuliKit comes close to delivering a good replacement, unfortunately it's not quite there yet.

I believe that they or someone else will most likely release a better alternative without the issues that these have

Re: Super Mario RPG Is Getting A Remake This November, And It Looks Amazing

DaniPooo

@HaroGenkide It's a classic that hasn't really seen any proper re-releases. So it's great that they bring it back like this.

Also I love Nintendo remakes, they don't change the gameplay much but they bring the presentation up to date. The Link's Awakening remake was also wonderful.

Wish SquareEnix would take some pointers from Nintendo.

This it the kind or remake I have been dreaming about for the Final Fantasy games. Not complete reboots that changes the entire genre of the game.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

DaniPooo

@TOTKcringe I can see your points, but even with those "down sides", I wouldn't call the game garbage, in fact I think TOTK did a lot of things better than BOTW. Better side quests, more freedom, larger world, more content.

Also it's clearly a sequel, I don't know what you expected.
The game takes place after BOTW and the story makes sense.

Sure there's no guardians boohoo, if you wanted to play the exact same game then play Breath of the Wild again?

Majora's Mask was a sequel to Ocarina of time and there was arguably even more differences between those games.

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give Zelda: Tears Of The Kingdom?

DaniPooo

@TOTKcringe no of course you can have different opinions. But when rating a game you should try being as objective as possible.

And no matter what angle you have, this game is not a terrible game.

I can admit that I don't enjoy playing the GTA games or the FIFA games or even the Dark Souls games.

But just because those are not the games for me, doesn't mean that I would give them a terrible score, because I can see that if you're into those sort of games then those games will probably be great.
In fact, I would admit that those games are not for me and I wouldn't rate them because I would probably give them an unfair score.

If you're not into hamburgers then maybe you shouldn't review or rate hamburgers? Better to leave that to someone who is passionate about hamburgers? That person will rate a poor hamburger harshly and a good hamburger fairly.

I can't in my wildest dreams imagine a good motivation behind giving TOTK a score of 3 or lower. Because it's a great open world action adventure title of very very high quality that looks and plays great on the Switch.

Objectively it's a great game with very few flaws.

Rating a game at 0 means it's a terrible joke of a game that looks terrible, plays terrible, sounds terrible, full of bugs, poor content, no quality to speak of whatsoever. There's just no way anyone can say that about TOTK even if the game is not for them.

If you're not into open world action adventure games, then maybe you shouldn't rate the game?
And if you don't know how to fairly rate a game, then you should definately not rate, you're doing more harm than good.

I just got an idea! @NintendoLife
How about you create a sort of "game-rating school" that you need to take and pass before being allowed to rate games?
Teach people what to consider when rating each spect of a game.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's GBA Library With Three Super Mario Games

DaniPooo

To all the people who mocked me in my first post..

I never said there wasn't any changes made, I just said that there wasn't any huge ones (By huge I meant changes that completely changed these games)

Don't get me wrong I don't mind getting these versions of the games and I understand that these can be considered the best versions.

That being said, I would have much preferred if Nintendo gave us some games that are exclusive to the GBA and not only updated versions of NES/SNES games.

It's not like I dislike these games, not at all. But how about giving us one of these games and two other games that are not Mario? And then something similar next time?

The fact is that every single one of these games already has at least one playable version already on the Nintendo online subscription. And now this is what I am paying extra for, the same games again with some upgrades. And I don't even get to keep the games if I stop paying.

Since I am paying for a subscription I would prefer if they give me some variety.

Re: Nintendo Expands Switch Online's GBA Library With Three Super Mario Games

DaniPooo

@Bass_X0 Are you talking about that the characters have some voice samples? Other than that I think the only other feature I can think of is the Yoshi coin challenge after you beat the game.

I never said there's no changes, I said "sure there some difference but not any major to my knowledge."

I don't consider voice samples and the Yoshi coin challenge Major differences.

Other than that, it's pretty similar to the All-stars version of Super Mario Bros 2 on SNES
