I just wrote a review for this game on Zelda Universe and pretty much agree with everything you've said! My biggest gripe is that you have to unlock parts of the world map in the exact same way four different times in each era, since the overworld is identical. But if you don't mind a little bit of monotony, it's a great time.
Very pleased to see other reviewers enjoy the game as much as I did! On Level With Us I gave it 5 stars. It's not perfect (no game is) but it executes on its premise perfectly.
I find this really interesting! Music copyright is extremely difficult to navigate. Honestly, in their shoes I would have done the same thing — evoke the Peanuts feel with original compositions that aren't quite exact. I think they probably got too close — I can hear "Skating" and lots of "Linus and Lucy" in a few of the tracks. But they can't claim to be a parody because, well, it's technically official.
I don't envy them but I don't begrudge them either for just trying to make a Peanuts game that sounds like Peanuts.
I actually don't love replaying games. I like experience new things and moving on to other new things, not to mention my huge backlog.
But.....I make a ROYAL exception for Steamworld Dig 2. I'm not sure what it is about it but I cannot stop playing it over and over and over again. It's just that good!! The loop is so addicting.
Very fun — very Nintendo! They've always had the potential to make some really great mobile games, and a pseudo-Warioware style seems like a great fit!
Played the demo in handheld, and was disappointed how blurry it looked, but then popped it into the dock and was surprised that it actually looks pretty solid! It's honestly really impressive that it's hitting 60 fps with the millions of particle effects happening on-screen, so I think they did a great job!
Gotta say, Capcom really seems to bring quality to their series. I've long envied RE and MH fans for getting so many awesome games from them — hear's hoping they bring Phoenix Wright back!
Wooow people absolutely TRASHING Mario Wonder in the comments! My goodness. I think it's a great game that finally injected more variety into the 2D series. It just felt like it had been so long since we had something this fresh with the new enemy types and wonder effects, and the game's overall weirdness, especially in the first playthrough, was such a welcome contrast to the NSMB games.
This expansion would have benefitted more single-player content, but I think I'll maybe pick it up for a fun group game night sometime.
@YAT To me it was a solid follow up... to Prime 3. Which also prioritizes set pieces, does not have an interconnected world, and has more linear design. So in that regard, it's still very much a Prime game! Just not the one people want it to be.
It's a good game but at least in my social bubbles everyone reeeaaaaly wants a return to Prime 1. But maybe those bubbles are the small hardcore fans, whereas the masses prefer this type of format. Always hard to make the right call when trying to get a franchise to sell better. Here's hoping they take a more "what makes this franchise good" approach going forward.
Really, truly loved this game. Here's my review: Evil Empire should be proud of this one. I don't usually dig roguelikes but I make an exception for ones like this.
Taking Dead Cells and adding a story with a fluid movement system and a rad soundtrack (Persian instruments with trap beats work together surprisingly well?) and you've got a solid title! The gameplay feels great, and I really loved all the platforming challenges that would pop up. Finding good synergies was also fun, if a little simplistic Unlike other roguelikes I tend to bounce off of, what helped me the most in enjoying this game was that 1. There's plenty of progression between runs and 2. There are story objectives for every run. I never felt like I was wasting my time, and I was able to get through the story with a decent amount of challenge without feeling like I was beating my head against the wall. I really appreciate that, and I highly recommend this game to people who enjoy Hades for the same reasons!
I would absolutely love more indie companies to take a stab at big IP's, because things like this and Cadence of Hyrule turned out really well. Between this and the Lost Crown, I think I have a new favorite franchise; please keep new 2D entries coming!!
TLDR Zero Mission, Dread, Fusion and AM2R are king. To me the best 2D games all surpass the Prime series, as cool as those are. Oh, and I like Metroid Pinball a bit more than Super. 🤗 Sorry!
Prime 4 is an excellent follow up to Corruption but doesn't quite hit the heights that Prime 1 (and Remastered) did.
Everyone has different financial situations, but if you're able to afford one, I think it would seriously make a huge impact in your son's life to get him one. In just a few more years he'll be an adult and making pretty much all his purchases on his own. There's a chance here to create a pretty amazing lasting memory with him. And honestly, it's been a pretty solid launch year imo!
While I don't think anything will ever live up to the insane year that was 2017, this has actually been a really solid year. People keep saying where are the games but think about it: Mariokart, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors, AND technically Hades II as a big exclusive makes for a seriously packed year — and it's only been six months!! I think that's overall super solid all things considered.
Played this on PSN — it's really excellent! If you like Dead Cells or Hades, I highly recommend checking it out. The parkour and wall-running is especially fun to pull off, and unlike some roguelikes the game has a definitive ending, while still allowing you to continue playing if you so wish.
Wow! I was literally listening to the remake's OST yesterday at work wishing it would come to the app! So pleased my favorite Nintendo game is now listenable, AND that they acknowledge the original soundtrack once again!
It's kind of unreal to me that they even allow you to hear the original OST in the game. When has Nintendo ever done that? What a blessing.
Disclaimer that I'm not a huge fan of the first Hollow Knight.
Some people will love it, and some will only think it's okay, and that's fine! I don't think anyone can argue that it's not well-made or well-designed.
For my money, I'd rank it between a 7 and 8 so far! Which is higher than I expected for me. The brutal difficulty is making it hard for me to want to stick with it (as was the case for the first game), but I really love the art, music, and story so far and want to experience more of it. We'll see if I can get through to the end!
@Oldstalk i'm exactly in that same boat right now. I don't mind a difficult boss if I get to try it a bunch of times, but the punishing run back really discourages me and makes me want to drop the game sometimes. I'm on the one you just mentioned... I seriously can't believe there's no closer bench
@sketchturner I wouldn't call it 50 bangers either, that seems like an impossible achievement. Instead, I would say it's an incredible value proposition, where there's so many games to check out and you may just find a handful of games that super click with you! I've actually been really surprised to go online and see that a lot of people's favorites are completely different from my favorites.
That's the fun of it - the devs describe it as going to a friend's house and trying a bunch of old retro games you dig up in the attic. Some are forgettable but you may just find a few serious gems!
I want to have compassion on these devs while also defending Team Cherry's decision.
I really don't think Team Cherry is trying to sabotage other indie games with the pricing. And I don't think they intended harm on the ones that hoped to release this week. Fact of the matter is that they're in an incredibly lucky position that the game will sell well and set them for life no matter what. Their choice to price low is player-friendly, and they'll still profit.
That being said, I don't fault other devs for pricing higher. Development costs are a lot and the market is over saturated. People accuse people of being greedy but to break even takes a lot. Just price at the value you think the game is worth and do what you can to market the game. Very few games will ever achieve the amount of press and meme status that Silksong did, so just do what you can.
Oh no....now I'm seriously torn. I wanted to play this on my Switch lite so I can enjoy handheld play with a dpad. But I do like 120 Hz....... this is gonna be a difficult decision.
This is fantastic news!! Casting actors who are experienced but not mega stars is honestly the best case scenario. If they cast celebrities to attract attention it'll probably be for the side roles. I'm glad I can breathe a sigh of relief!
This game is EXCELLENT. Played it on game pass and may have to purchase it again on S2 at some point. Really flew under the radar though, and I don't think they marketed it very much.
@Sonicka Have you tested this? What if you enable online licensing, launch the game on a secondary system connected to the internet, and then flip on airplane mode? Will that immediately boot you out?
I do a lot of game sharing with my extended family with this exact method so I'd love to see more details on it.
I check it daily, but I gotta say...pretty disappointing. There's occasionally some fun Metroid concept art I haven't seen before, and I do like when they put interactable 3D models or footage from the upcoming DK game...but it's otherwise very bare bones. Barely much text either. It's a far cry from Nintendo Life, that's for sure.

What I think is more important is will they release a stylus? Multi-touch displays don't quite work the same way a DS touch screen does, so I hope they developed a screen in mind with a smart stylus (similar to an apple pen).
My worst fears are realized. This team also made Rayman Legends — they are exceptional designers! But despite making this excellent smaller-scope Metroidvania, they're thrown out the window. Very disappointed, very sad, I wish the team the best of luck finding work if they were indeed laid off or reassigned.

@wanghosom Having played through the entire game, I think it's only as much of a "re-skin" as literally any other 3D platformer. I highly recommend checking it out if you have a PS5, I personally think the game oozes originality in its level designs. The silly side-by-side comparisons like the one featured above don't do this game justice.
