TLDR Zero Mission, Dread, Fusion and AM2R are king. To me the best 2D games all surpass the Prime series, as cool as those are. Oh, and I like Metroid Pinball a bit more than Super. 🤗 Sorry!
Prime 4 is an excellent follow up to Corruption but doesn't quite hit the heights that Prime 1 (and Remastered) did.
Everyone has different financial situations, but if you're able to afford one, I think it would seriously make a huge impact in your son's life to get him one. In just a few more years he'll be an adult and making pretty much all his purchases on his own. There's a chance here to create a pretty amazing lasting memory with him. And honestly, it's been a pretty solid launch year imo!
While I don't think anything will ever live up to the insane year that was 2017, this has actually been a really solid year. People keep saying where are the games but think about it: Mariokart, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors, AND technically Hades II as a big exclusive makes for a seriously packed year — and it's only been six months!! I think that's overall super solid all things considered.
Played this on PSN — it's really excellent! If you like Dead Cells or Hades, I highly recommend checking it out. The parkour and wall-running is especially fun to pull off, and unlike some roguelikes the game has a definitive ending, while still allowing you to continue playing if you so wish.
Wow! I was literally listening to the remake's OST yesterday at work wishing it would come to the app! So pleased my favorite Nintendo game is now listenable, AND that they acknowledge the original soundtrack once again!
It's kind of unreal to me that they even allow you to hear the original OST in the game. When has Nintendo ever done that? What a blessing.
Disclaimer that I'm not a huge fan of the first Hollow Knight.
Some people will love it, and some will only think it's okay, and that's fine! I don't think anyone can argue that it's not well-made or well-designed.
For my money, I'd rank it between a 7 and 8 so far! Which is higher than I expected for me. The brutal difficulty is making it hard for me to want to stick with it (as was the case for the first game), but I really love the art, music, and story so far and want to experience more of it. We'll see if I can get through to the end!
@Oldstalk i'm exactly in that same boat right now. I don't mind a difficult boss if I get to try it a bunch of times, but the punishing run back really discourages me and makes me want to drop the game sometimes. I'm on the one you just mentioned... I seriously can't believe there's no closer bench
@sketchturner I wouldn't call it 50 bangers either, that seems like an impossible achievement. Instead, I would say it's an incredible value proposition, where there's so many games to check out and you may just find a handful of games that super click with you! I've actually been really surprised to go online and see that a lot of people's favorites are completely different from my favorites.
That's the fun of it - the devs describe it as going to a friend's house and trying a bunch of old retro games you dig up in the attic. Some are forgettable but you may just find a few serious gems!
I want to have compassion on these devs while also defending Team Cherry's decision.
I really don't think Team Cherry is trying to sabotage other indie games with the pricing. And I don't think they intended harm on the ones that hoped to release this week. Fact of the matter is that they're in an incredibly lucky position that the game will sell well and set them for life no matter what. Their choice to price low is player-friendly, and they'll still profit.
That being said, I don't fault other devs for pricing higher. Development costs are a lot and the market is over saturated. People accuse people of being greedy but to break even takes a lot. Just price at the value you think the game is worth and do what you can to market the game. Very few games will ever achieve the amount of press and meme status that Silksong did, so just do what you can.
Oh no....now I'm seriously torn. I wanted to play this on my Switch lite so I can enjoy handheld play with a dpad. But I do like 120 Hz....... this is gonna be a difficult decision.
This is fantastic news!! Casting actors who are experienced but not mega stars is honestly the best case scenario. If they cast celebrities to attract attention it'll probably be for the side roles. I'm glad I can breathe a sigh of relief!
This game is EXCELLENT. Played it on game pass and may have to purchase it again on S2 at some point. Really flew under the radar though, and I don't think they marketed it very much.
@Sonicka Have you tested this? What if you enable online licensing, launch the game on a secondary system connected to the internet, and then flip on airplane mode? Will that immediately boot you out?
I do a lot of game sharing with my extended family with this exact method so I'd love to see more details on it.
I check it daily, but I gotta say...pretty disappointing. There's occasionally some fun Metroid concept art I haven't seen before, and I do like when they put interactable 3D models or footage from the upcoming DK game...but it's otherwise very bare bones. Barely much text either. It's a far cry from Nintendo Life, that's for sure.
I just stumbled into an angry video where a bunch of PC gamers are up in arms in the comment section saying "SCREW NINTENDO, I'LL JUST PIRATE ALL THEIR GAMES, THEY'RE A CANCER ON THE GAMES INDUSTRY AND IT'S MORALLY JUSTIFIED TO STEAL FROM BIG CORPORATIONS".
Apart from morally disagreeing with that philosophy, I think it'd benefit everyone to take a step back and realize that the reason we care so much about pricing is because they put out undeniably great products. Whether the price is worth it will come down to the individual, but to me most Nintendo first-party games will forever be worth the asking price of the console.
Woooow I'm really surprised how low people are viewing this. Like, you do realize we're getting a Switch 2 direct in less than a week right? I thought expectations were low but I guess everyone's disappointed their [insert favorite game franchise] didn't show up.
It's the end of its life people — it's only gonna be small potatoes from here on out.
@sketchturner Personal preference then. Games of the era were intentionally made obtuse and required hours of dedication to get through, and a lot of that feels like a hold over from the arcade era. Give me 100 well designed, lovely, breezy puzzle platformer levels and I'm in Handheld Heaven.
Looks like everyone knows this already but DK '94 is seriously so good. 10 out of 10 game to me, probably the best game on the OG Game Boy. Glad they are finally acknowledging it!
Last week I finished Sea of Stars, which we played completely in couch co-op. It was excellent! Even though battles are turn-based your action commands also count and compound with your partners. Really excellent update to a really excellent modern RPG — I highly recommend it!
Cat Quest is also delightful. Short, sweet, and light co-op fare that doesn't overstay its welcome.
Not on Nintendo, but the Battlefront devs made "Lord of the Rings Conquest" and it is just incredible, highly recommended if you have some buddies to play split screen with.
What I think is more important is will they release a stylus? Multi-touch displays don't quite work the same way a DS touch screen does, so I hope they developed a screen in mind with a smart stylus (similar to an apple pen).
My worst fears are realized. This team also made Rayman Legends — they are exceptional designers! But despite making this excellent smaller-scope Metroidvania, they're thrown out the window. Very disappointed, very sad, I wish the team the best of luck finding work if they were indeed laid off or reassigned.
I really want this game to do well, because Mario needs more competition. Astro has LOTS of originality to speak of — the only people who feel otherwise haven't played it (as far as I can tell).
I want Astro to become Sony's mascot. This game is so full of joy and bursting with fun ideas, and is a technical marvel to boot!
@wanghosom Having played through the entire game, I think it's only as much of a "re-skin" as literally any other 3D platformer. I highly recommend checking it out if you have a PS5, I personally think the game oozes originality in its level designs. The silly side-by-side comparisons like the one featured above don't do this game justice.
@Tyranexx Completely agree. I keep seeing people say that it was disappointing of them to do that reveal and just have it be a detective game. But I would counter-argue that if they had a detective game ready to go, advertising it like this was the BEST possible choice in order to find people interested. Having a demo was also a great decision.
Man. I reached out to Game Informer this year looking for work, but I guess I'm glad it didn't work out now that I know what happened. My heart goes out to the staff.
This really is a shame because Game Informer and Nintendo Life are the only gaming new sites I can tolerate. IGN and Gamespot and Polygon have become far to Hollywoodified, and Kotaku… Well, they do interesting stories now and then, but a lot of their writers are pretty vulgar and I don't love how often political rants end up in the middle of their gaming articles.
Ohhhh a detective game makes SO much more sense 😅 the dark themes present in the Australian ratings board made me question why Nintendo would be willing to make such a game.
Marketing it this way was super smart. Famicom detective club is not that popular an IP just by itself. This went from being something I was perturbed by to something I'm genuinely interested in possibly trying!
Can someone please explain to me why people are excited to see words like "suicide" and "domestic violence" in the rating of this game? I understand enjoying scary or dark themed media but how on earth is it not a turn-off to hear about horrible things like that in a game?
@Not_Soos I'm in the same boat as you. I love creepy games that don't rely too much on shock factor. Little Nightmares and "Inside" are some of my favorites!
Even if this does end up being something too violent for me, I'm still interested in seeing Nintendo's design philosophies in a genre they don't dabble in very often.
This was actually my game of the year when it came out! I'm curious if anyone ever uses these game trials to try and marathon the game all the way through before the trial expires?
I've already said this before but I really did not like this game. I respect the reviewer's opinion about the humor but I felt the exact opposite. There's a running gag with a chicken whose head was cut off that's constantly spitting out blood. At another point, someone eats a baby. And plenty of poop humor. It's gross, and really turned me off from enjoying the better mechanics of the game.
I do want more culturally specific-inspired games like this and Zau, but not with gross-out humor and "shock value".
Duuuuuude same! I have about 100 games on my backlog (which you can actually view right here: https://ggapp.io/jkrgamer/shelved) but it's been so hard trying to get through them when little gems like Pepper Grinder and Prince of Persia and Penny's Big Breakaway keep coming out!! Hopefully I can try and make a dent before ANOTHER P-title comes out (looking at you, Plucky Squire and Paper Mario TTYD remake!).
I've only played the demo, but if it's a good snapshot of the entire experience, I'd rank it pretty low, probably 2 or 2.5 Stars.
When you play a Mario game, you don't think "oh, they made this for kids". They started by making a really well-designed game, that just so happens to appeal to all age groups. For this one, I sadly felt it was underwhelming and definitely "for kids", which is really unfortunate. Even breezier experiences like Kirby have mass appeal, but I just didn't feel that way here. Maybe when my daughter is old enough to enjoy games like this I'll pick it up.
In the meantime, I'm playing Super Princess Peach this week on a pink DS, and having a lovely time! It's a great platformer, and I think they should keep producing titles with her as the starring character!
I played this on PS5 to help ease the wait for Tears of the Kingdom. It has a couple things going for it, but in general I'd probably not recommend it.
The possession mechanic is an undoubtedly cool idea - even just possessing a rock and bouncing around the island is fun. I also love the game's display of the culture in New Caledonia, with some lovely music numbers and beautiful vistas. The map system is also has a nice Hollow Knight-esque spin to it.
Unfortunately, I don't have much else good to say about it. The open-world activities aren't terrible, but it was the inconsistently irreverent sense of humor that REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. It feels family-friendly but then the villain eats a baby, or a headless chicken jumps on screen and starts spurting blood everywhere. Plenty of poop jokes too. You're also forced into a romantic relationship that felt a little out of left field to me.
All in all I agree with everything @Not_Soos said but would rank the game a fair bit lower. There are plenty of lovely open world games out there I'd recommend instead, but if this is the one that most intrigues you, go for it!
@Not_Soos Same!! It's been my favorite Nintendo game for decades so it's nice to know that I'm not alone. <3
I remember a YouTuber saying "Nintendo would never release this game today" in reference to the gang of goombas trying to pick up Goombella, as well as the noose in town square. But hey, noose still intact! Hopefully the script won't be too altered either
@Not_Soos I've thought a lot about this. When it's on the internet and it's anonymous, people feel like they can say anything without consequence. Death threats, racist remarks - anything's on the table. "You're a bad person. You deserved this." Is far less likely to be said in person than a comment.
I believe people can and do change. But everyone on the internet is so obsessed with labeling each other, and cancelling each other. Whether it's a well known celebrity or someone who isn't in the public eye at all, NO ONE deserves to be told they're an awful irredeemable person.
In conclusion, let's all treat each other with respect. Yes, that includes people you don't like or disagree with. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.
Wow, people are very passionate about this. While I agree that MintRocket doesn't technically qualify as an independent studio, I think Dave the Diver does fit the "indie" label/tag it has on its Steam Page.
When I say "I like to play indie games", it doesn't mean I like games that are only published by strictly independent studios with tiny budgets. It means I like smaller-scale games. Same goes for saying "I like indie rock" when there are indie rock songs produced by major record labels.
This game very well could be my game of the year – it's neck and neck with Pikmin 4. Such a stellar, fantastic title, they absolutely nailed down the loop so well that I was addicted for hours and hours. Love this game, highly highly recommended to just about anyone. And it's great because you can finish the story and be done with the game, or keep playing for a really long time afterwards and perfect to your restaurant.
While I do think it's important to prepare for the future and re-cast roles - we see this all the time with long-standing mascots like Bugs Bunny or the Muppets, and it's preferable to re-using the same library of samples or AI - I wouldn't be surprised if Charles is saddened by the change. I hope this ambassador role means they're continuing to pay and take care of him as their long-standing go-to voice actor.
@Not_Soos Agreed. I feel like I can tell he's a bit sad about all this. It was definitely their decision, but I hope this "ambassador" thing means they're going to keep paying him and paying for his travel to take care of him as thanks for the years of work he's provided for them.

Re: Soapbox: As A 'Slay The Spire' Addict, I Can't Believe I Almost Missed This 2023 Gem
It's SOOO good and actually ended up in my top 5 games of the year!
Happy to see more people review it. We put our review up as well:

Re: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Rated For Switch By ESRB
@Not_Soos Same!! It's been my favorite Nintendo game for decades so it's nice to know that I'm not alone. <3
I remember a YouTuber saying "Nintendo would never release this game today" in reference to the gang of goombas trying to pick up Goombella, as well as the noose in town square. But hey, noose still intact! Hopefully the script won't be too altered either
Re: Sea Of Stars Developer Sabotage Replacing 'The Completionist' NPC
@Not_Soos I've thought a lot about this. When it's on the internet and it's anonymous, people feel like they can say anything without consequence. Death threats, racist remarks - anything's on the table.
"You're a bad person. You deserved this." Is far less likely to be said in person than a comment.
I believe people can and do change. But everyone on the internet is so obsessed with labeling each other, and cancelling each other. Whether it's a well known celebrity or someone who isn't in the public eye at all, NO ONE deserves to be told they're an awful irredeemable person.
I never see anyone treat people with nuance - they're either fine or "a bad person". And I'm especially not a fan of those YouTubers who make a living shaming and "exposing" people. For all the critics and commenters - how would you feel if someone went in and made a huge exposé of something dumb you did in highschool? Or an unkind thing you once said? Or doxxed you and suddenly you have people following you and taking pictures of you and infringing on your privacy? It would tear your life apart.
In conclusion, let's all treat each other with respect. Yes, that includes people you don't like or disagree with. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.
Re: Best Nintendo Pinball Games
The Pokémon ones are great, but man Metroid Pinball is SO good. I legitimately rank it above some of the other mainline entries in the series.
Re: Is Dave The Diver An Indie Game? The Game Awards' Host Weighs In
Wow, people are very passionate about this.
Re: Review: Dave The Diver - One Of The Best Games In A Year Of Greats
This game very well could be my game of the year – it's neck and neck with Pikmin 4. Such a stellar, fantastic title, they absolutely nailed down the loop so well that I was addicted for hours and hours. Love this game, highly highly recommended to just about anyone. And it's great because you can finish the story and be done with the game, or keep playing for a really long time afterwards and perfect to your restaurant.
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thanks Charles Martinet For Being The Voice Of Mario In Heartfelt Message
Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thanks Charles Martinet For Being The Voice Of Mario In Heartfelt Message
@Not_Soos Agreed. I feel like I can tell he's a bit sad about all this. It was definitely their decision, but I hope this "ambassador" thing means they're going to keep paying him and paying for his travel to take care of him as thanks for the years of work he's provided for them.
