Re: Feature: My NES Longing, My Son's Terrifying Switch 2 Obsession

Citrus_Architect

Everyone has different financial situations, but if you're able to afford one, I think it would seriously make a huge impact in your son's life to get him one. In just a few more years he'll be an adult and making pretty much all his purchases on his own. There's a chance here to create a pretty amazing lasting memory with him. And honestly, it's been a pretty solid launch year imo!

Re: Talking Point: Six Months Since Launch, How Would You Rate Switch 2?

Citrus_Architect

While I don't think anything will ever live up to the insane year that was 2017, this has actually been a really solid year. People keep saying where are the games but think about it: Mariokart, Donkey Kong, Pokemon, Metroid, Kirby Air Riders, Hyrule Warriors, AND technically Hades II as a big exclusive makes for a seriously packed year — and it's only been six months!! I think that's overall super solid all things considered.

Re: Nintendo Music Adds Two Paper Mario Albums, But There's A Catch

Citrus_Architect

Wow! I was literally listening to the remake's OST yesterday at work wishing it would come to the app! So pleased my favorite Nintendo game is now listenable, AND that they acknowledge the original soundtrack once again!

It's kind of unreal to me that they even allow you to hear the original OST in the game. When has Nintendo ever done that? What a blessing.

Re: Opinion: Silksong's Tight Construction Is Exactly What I Need After Too Much Open-World Loafing

Citrus_Architect

Disclaimer that I'm not a huge fan of the first Hollow Knight.

Some people will love it, and some will only think it's okay, and that's fine! I don't think anyone can argue that it's not well-made or well-designed.

For my money, I'd rank it between a 7 and 8 so far! Which is higher than I expected for me. The brutal difficulty is making it hard for me to want to stick with it (as was the case for the first game), but I really love the art, music, and story so far and want to experience more of it. We'll see if I can get through to the end!

Re: UFO 50 Has Been Updated On Switch, Here Are The Full Patch Notes

Citrus_Architect

@sketchturner I wouldn't call it 50 bangers either, that seems like an impossible achievement. Instead, I would say it's an incredible value proposition, where there's so many games to check out and you may just find a handful of games that super click with you! I've actually been really surprised to go online and see that a lot of people's favorites are completely different from my favorites.

That's the fun of it - the devs describe it as going to a friend's house and trying a bunch of old retro games you dig up in the attic. Some are forgettable but you may just find a few serious gems!

Re: "I Can't Afford To Give It Away For Free" - Silksong's Low Price Is Causing Devs To Re-Evaluate Their Own Games

Citrus_Architect

I want to have compassion on these devs while also defending Team Cherry's decision.

I really don't think Team Cherry is trying to sabotage other indie games with the pricing. And I don't think they intended harm on the ones that hoped to release this week. Fact of the matter is that they're in an incredibly lucky position that the game will sell well and set them for life no matter what. Their choice to price low is player-friendly, and they'll still profit.

That being said, I don't fault other devs for pricing higher. Development costs are a lot and the market is over saturated. People accuse people of being greedy but to break even takes a lot. Just price at the value you think the game is worth and do what you can to market the game. Very few games will ever achieve the amount of press and meme status that Silksong did, so just do what you can.

Re: Talking Point: How Does Switch 2's Launch Price Compare To Past Nintendo Systems?

Citrus_Architect

I just stumbled into an angry video where a bunch of PC gamers are up in arms in the comment section saying "SCREW NINTENDO, I'LL JUST PIRATE ALL THEIR GAMES, THEY'RE A CANCER ON THE GAMES INDUSTRY AND IT'S MORALLY JUSTIFIED TO STEAL FROM BIG CORPORATIONS".

Apart from morally disagreeing with that philosophy, I think it'd benefit everyone to take a step back and realize that the reason we care so much about pricing is because they put out undeniably great products. Whether the price is worth it will come down to the individual, but to me most Nintendo first-party games will forever be worth the asking price of the console.

Re: Poll: So, How Would You Rate The Nintendo Direct For March 2025?

Citrus_Architect

Woooow I'm really surprised how low people are viewing this. Like, you do realize we're getting a Switch 2 direct in less than a week right? I thought expectations were low but I guess everyone's disappointed their [insert favorite game franchise] didn't show up.

It's the end of its life people — it's only gonna be small potatoes from here on out.

Re: Opinion: We Need More Couch Co-op RPGs

Citrus_Architect

Last week I finished Sea of Stars, which we played completely in couch co-op. It was excellent! Even though battles are turn-based your action commands also count and compound with your partners. Really excellent update to a really excellent modern RPG — I highly recommend it!

Cat Quest is also delightful. Short, sweet, and light co-op fare that doesn't overstay its welcome.

Re: Iconic Publication Game Informer Is Closing Down After 33 Years

Citrus_Architect

Man. I reached out to Game Informer this year looking for work, but I guess I'm glad it didn't work out now that I know what happened. My heart goes out to the staff.

This really is a shame because Game Informer and Nintendo Life are the only gaming new sites I can tolerate. IGN and Gamespot and Polygon have become far to Hollywoodified, and Kotaku… Well, they do interesting stories now and then, but a lot of their writers are pretty vulgar and I don't love how often political rants end up in the middle of their gaming articles.

Re: 'Emio - The Smiling Man: Famicom Detective Club' Launches On Switch Next Month

Citrus_Architect

Ohhhh a detective game makes SO much more sense 😅 the dark themes present in the Australian ratings board made me question why Nintendo would be willing to make such a game.

Marketing it this way was super smart. Famicom detective club is not that popular an IP just by itself. This went from being something I was perturbed by to something I'm genuinely interested in possibly trying!

Re: Nintendo Reveals Disturbing 'Emio' Teaser, And Fans Are Baffled

Citrus_Architect

@Not_Soos I'm in the same boat as you. I love creepy games that don't rely too much on shock factor. Little Nightmares and "Inside" are some of my favorites!

Even if this does end up being something too violent for me, I'm still interested in seeing Nintendo's design philosophies in a genre they don't dabble in very often.

Re: Review: Tchia (Switch) - A Brilliantly Fun (And Surprisingly Adult) Animal-Hopping Adventure

Citrus_Architect

I've already said this before but I really did not like this game. I respect the reviewer's opinion about the humor but I felt the exact opposite. There's a running gag with a chicken whose head was cut off that's constantly spitting out blood. At another point, someone eats a baby. And plenty of poop humor. It's gross, and really turned me off from enjoying the better mechanics of the game.

I do want more culturally specific-inspired games like this and Zau, but not with gross-out humor and "shock value".

Re: Soapbox: I Thought I'd Clear My Backlog In 2024, But The Switch Had Other Ideas

Citrus_Architect

Duuuuuude same! I have about 100 games on my backlog (which you can actually view right here: https://ggapp.io/jkrgamer/shelved) but it's been so hard trying to get through them when little gems like Pepper Grinder and Prince of Persia and Penny's Big Breakaway keep coming out!! Hopefully I can try and make a dent before ANOTHER P-title comes out (looking at you, Plucky Squire and Paper Mario TTYD remake!).

Re: Poll: What Review Score Would You Give 'Princess Peach: Showtime!'?

Citrus_Architect

I've only played the demo, but if it's a good snapshot of the entire experience, I'd rank it pretty low, probably 2 or 2.5 Stars.

When you play a Mario game, you don't think "oh, they made this for kids". They started by making a really well-designed game, that just so happens to appeal to all age groups. For this one, I sadly felt it was underwhelming and definitely "for kids", which is really unfortunate. Even breezier experiences like Kirby have mass appeal, but I just didn't feel that way here. Maybe when my daughter is old enough to enjoy games like this I'll pick it up.

In the meantime, I'm playing Super Princess Peach this week on a pink DS, and having a lovely time! It's a great platformer, and I think they should keep producing titles with her as the starring character!

Re: Tropical Open World Adventure 'Tchia' Glides Onto Switch This Summer

Citrus_Architect

I played this on PS5 to help ease the wait for Tears of the Kingdom. It has a couple things going for it, but in general I'd probably not recommend it.

The possession mechanic is an undoubtedly cool idea - even just possessing a rock and bouncing around the island is fun. I also love the game's display of the culture in New Caledonia, with some lovely music numbers and beautiful vistas. The map system is also has a nice Hollow Knight-esque spin to it.

Unfortunately, I don't have much else good to say about it. The open-world activities aren't terrible, but it was the inconsistently irreverent sense of humor that REALLY rubbed me the wrong way. It feels family-friendly but then the villain eats a baby, or a headless chicken jumps on screen and starts spurting blood everywhere. Plenty of poop jokes too. You're also forced into a romantic relationship that felt a little out of left field to me.

All in all I agree with everything @Not_Soos said but would rank the game a fair bit lower. There are plenty of lovely open world games out there I'd recommend instead, but if this is the one that most intrigues you, go for it!

Re: Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door Rated For Switch By ESRB

Citrus_Architect

@Not_Soos Same!! It's been my favorite Nintendo game for decades so it's nice to know that I'm not alone. <3

I remember a YouTuber saying "Nintendo would never release this game today" in reference to the gang of goombas trying to pick up Goombella, as well as the noose in town square. But hey, noose still intact! Hopefully the script won't be too altered either

Re: Sea Of Stars Developer Sabotage Replacing 'The Completionist' NPC

Citrus_Architect

@Not_Soos I've thought a lot about this. When it's on the internet and it's anonymous, people feel like they can say anything without consequence. Death threats, racist remarks - anything's on the table.
"You're a bad person. You deserved this." Is far less likely to be said in person than a comment.

I believe people can and do change. But everyone on the internet is so obsessed with labeling each other, and cancelling each other. Whether it's a well known celebrity or someone who isn't in the public eye at all, NO ONE deserves to be told they're an awful irredeemable person.

I never see anyone treat people with nuance - they're either fine or "a bad person". And I'm especially not a fan of those YouTubers who make a living shaming and "exposing" people. For all the critics and commenters - how would you feel if someone went in and made a huge exposé of something dumb you did in highschool? Or an unkind thing you once said? Or doxxed you and suddenly you have people following you and taking pictures of you and infringing on your privacy? It would tear your life apart.

In conclusion, let's all treat each other with respect. Yes, that includes people you don't like or disagree with. Thanks for listening to my Ted Talk.

Re: Is Dave The Diver An Indie Game? The Game Awards' Host Weighs In

Citrus_Architect

Wow, people are very passionate about this. While I agree that MintRocket doesn't technically qualify as an independent studio, I think Dave the Diver does fit the "indie" label/tag it has on its Steam Page.

When I say "I like to play indie games", it doesn't mean I like games that are only published by strictly independent studios with tiny budgets. It means I like smaller-scale games. Same goes for saying "I like indie rock" when there are indie rock songs produced by major record labels.

Re: Review: Dave The Diver - One Of The Best Games In A Year Of Greats

Citrus_Architect

This game very well could be my game of the year – it's neck and neck with Pikmin 4. Such a stellar, fantastic title, they absolutely nailed down the loop so well that I was addicted for hours and hours. Love this game, highly highly recommended to just about anyone. And it's great because you can finish the story and be done with the game, or keep playing for a really long time afterwards and perfect to your restaurant.

Re: Shigeru Miyamoto Thanks Charles Martinet For Being The Voice Of Mario In Heartfelt Message

Citrus_Architect

While I do think it's important to prepare for the future and re-cast roles - we see this all the time with long-standing mascots like Bugs Bunny or the Muppets, and it's preferable to re-using the same library of samples or AI - I wouldn't be surprised if Charles is saddened by the change. I hope this ambassador role means they're continuing to pay and take care of him as their long-standing go-to voice actor.
