The Switch already being an RPG machine during Pokémon Sword and Shield’s arrival, it made me realize how limited SwSh really is—with or without the Dexit situation. Having played games like Dragon Quest XI, Ni No Kuni, Fire Emblem: Three Houses, and the like this year, it is without question that SwSh, by comparison, lacks ambition and imagination.
Just finished Episode 4 and really enjoying it so far. I don’t see what’s confusing about it. You just have to pay attention. That isn’t a difficult task.
I just got to the village with the bathhouse. It’s a lot of fun. I feel like I’ve been playing for hours, but friends insist I haven’t even touched the surface. And that sounded great to me.
@Sabruka Sometimes reviewers choose to soften their criticisms in order to maintain access to future games. That’s why, for me, independent reviewers not tied to industry (not getting perks like early access, etc.) are the more reliable resources.
The complete (National) Pokedex has not been available for several games now. That’s not the issue. The issue is the fact that we cannot transfer Pokémon from Pokémon Bank that are not coded in Sword and Shield (and, apparently, onwards).
Then I will reiterate: Game Freak deserves the backlash they are getting.
Adapt to what your fans ask for or suffer as a business, whether it affects them financially or reputation. If something were to break the camel’s back, I hope this is it.
@Sunanootoko No work is, or should be, immune to criticism. You make something and you put it out there to be critiqued. That's art. And there are a number of instances where gamers have critiqued a game, game developers took the criticisms on board, and made their game better. I don't subscribe to the "Shut up and take it" mentality. Speak up.
It's never as reductive as "You don't like it, don't buy it." That's a simplistic way of thinking and you know it. Or I hope you do.
@johnvboy Respectfully, you are conflating two different points. Your point is sales numbers. Specifically, from what I understand, and please correct me if I'm wrong, you're saying that the backlash wouldn't matter because the game would sell anyway.
My point, on the other hand, is that the backlash is well-deserved, whether or not the game sells. Because this backlash is a direct result of the numerous excuses handed to us--which would supposedly improve the game and thus justify Dexit.
@MH4 @Doofenshmirtz I played only about halfway through the first. Not that I thought it was terrible but because other games came out and I fell out with YW1. But from the sounds of it, I should check out the sequels, too. Repurchasing the first on the Switch, too.
Can’t wait to get my hands on it. I was in grad school when the game was released originally; I meant to play it since but never had the opportunity. But now here it is, a few more days.
@KcebEnyaw Just a slight correction. You can get a maximum of 9 spells per draw. But your point still stands, especially the fact that the game allows you different ways to restock your magic without drawing (i.e.: converting cards to magic, upgrading weaker magic to stronger ones, etc.).
Personally, I love the junction system. It requires you to think a little bit (even though there is an “Auto” option!) on how you want to build your character. No one character is pigeonholed as healer only, tank only, etc. I like that flexibility.
If being utterly insane, or strange, or weird is considered a negative, we would not discover new frontiers. And this doesn’t just apply to video games.

Framing of the actual issue matters.

The backlash is well-deserved. Maybe next time they’ll strive to deliver a game worthy of the Nintendo Switch.
