If you're not yet feeling the hype for the upcoming Pokémon Sword and Shield games, you might want to give this fancy new commercial a spin.
Appropriately called 'Pokémon Sword & Pokémon Shield – Epic battles await', this new trailer certainly brings the heat. With the current state of the Pokémon community, we're sure there'll be some fans who will watch this and say, "meh, looks rubbish anyway" without giving it a second thought, but if you're a little more open-minded, you'll hopefully enjoy it. Seeing the opening with that giant Corvinight would've blown our tiny minds as kids.
As well as the fancy CGI, the video showcases the all-new Dynamax and Gigantamax phenomena set to appear in the upcoming games - a feature which we'll make sure to explore when our full review of the games drops in the near future.
If you missed it, two brand new Pokémon were shown off in a trailer yesterday. Interestingly, The Pokémon Company hasn't revealed the names of these new monsters in an official capacity.
Are you excited for Pokémon Sword and Shield as the release draws near? Only three days to go, Trainers!

I like how you must always say "Some people are gonna hate anyway, but..." Seems a little defensive.
@Elithal it is on the internet after all..
@Thwomp_Stomper True. The internet is relentless and will hate anyway lol. My point is, no need to apologize - People will do what they're going to do, no need for every article to point out the inevitable.
Three more days to go ! 😁
And Sobble will be my starter Pokemon.
CG commercials don't really affect me either way. With that said, I am excited for the games.
@Anti-Matter I may be going for a Fire type for once. Something I was already close to doing in Moon until Primarina got revealed.😅
I'm not the biggest pokemon fan but I feel so mixed with this title. On one hand I think this game could be great to jump into the series as I'm a newer player, but I dont like the idea of giants, 3ds like graphics and the lack of pokemon (yet they can have a lot of curry and stupid trivial things). I dont know what game is a good starting point but this one might be my first only because it's on switch
@PickledKong64 Lack of Pokemon? The game will have around 150 like they always do, including loads of new ones! The lack of a National Dex is only an issue for people who have played every instalment and like to transfer over from game to game. It is a complete non-issue for people who are new and want to start playing from Sword and Shield.
@Ooccoo_Jr oh. I thought all were upset because it doesnt have every pokemon
The technical issues with these games almost warrant a class action lawsuit for false advertising.
The trailer looks nice enough, but this close to release the avid fans are scrutinizing the leaks and gameplay footage from early copies.
They've put a lot of effort into the marketing campaign for this.
@PickledKong64 That is why we're upset, and @ooccoo_jr is being extremely disingenuous to suggest otherwise. Even if you don't plan to collect them all, having more Pokemon means more variety in the battles you have against both NPCs and other players.
The new games also remove around 80 moves (attacks) from past games, not counting moves unique to removed Pokemon. Again, this furher simplifies and unbalances the battle system and results in less variety in how you can build your team.
There are dozens of other problems, but to list just one more - on the subject of moves, many moves you were able to teach with infinite-use items have now become finite-use items that you have grind tediously to get more copies of.
I'm not too thrilled of the pokemon thanos snap like a lot of fans but I used my gen 1 team to death. Their going to finally be chillin with the professor like 'BOUT TIME!
@Ooccoo_Jr Where are the advance animations though? The games are locked at 30 FPS and still crawl with bad pop-in. Apparently trainers disappear when there are too many particle effects on screen. Generic backgrounds are used for battles if they are indoors or outdoors. The list of issues goes on. https://www.reddit.com/r/pokemon/comments/dv438w/complete_list_of_all_problems_known_so_far_in/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share
@NIN10DOXD Not really? Man, all anger makes me want to by the games out of spite, if I wasn't already doing so.
@NandN3ds Until it freezes up on you because the coding is so bad. There is footage of the game chugging.
@NIN10DOXD https://www.reddit.com/r/PokemonSwordAndShield/comments/dv41qr/i_cannot_get_over_how_pretty_this_game_is_i_mean/
By the way, people wanting a better community for Sword and Shield should join the Sword and Shield sub on reddit. The main pokemon sub is so toxic I had to leave.
@NandN3ds That's a trailer. They aren't going to show performance issues in a trailer. 🤦♂️
You can tell that smear campaign against the game is professionally organized, you can't discuss about it. Someone is spending some millions to trash the game everywhere on the internet. It's always like that when a Nintendo system sells too well. Some gigantic megacorps use these petty tactics instead of playing fair and making better games.
@glaemay How am I, a user of this site for nearly a decade, paid by another company to not like these games? You sound like Alex Jones right now with your conspiracy theories.
Look at this high quality animations!

Be informed before you buy.
@NIN10DOXD It's allowed to tell a Nintendo game is bad before its release. It's unallowed to tell a Sony game is bad before its release. Easy to guess where it's coming from. There's a big company who wants the death of the biggest seller of japanese videogames in order to destroy the japanese industry and it isn't playing fair to reach its objective.
@glaemay most of the game's I play are from Nintendo and other Japanese publishers. You can see that I rarely comment on articles about Western games. Lol Nobody is organizing a hit on Nintendo. The games leaked like they do every year and this time the game has far more bugs than past entries. Nobody wants to kill Nintendo or Pokémon. I almost feel like your attacks are personal. I had a childhood with few friends and escaped into Pokémon games. Nobody can question my love for this franchise or Nintendo products that I have played for nearly two decades.
It feels really weird to me to have a new Pokémon game so close to release and not be hyped for it.
@NIN10DOXD
Maybe there is day1 patch?
Still people defending this? Lol. These games are full of problems and look like N64 games. demand some quality for once in your life. Can't believe people are so naive they defend a lazy and incompetent developer doing a 90 billion dollars franchise so much disservice.
@Justifier I hope. It seems like the developers tried, but the leaks suggest the game was rushed. The datamining suggests somethings were left in the code that maybe they didn't have time to finish. Nintendo and Creatures need to step in if Game Freak is really this pressed to release these games on time.
@NIN10DOXD
Yeah it seems that way. They had too little time. I even read that they have 1000 people working with this game. Well, X and Y was laggy too, but lets hope that they patch it.
That list of faults is worrisome
I'm reading about performance, gameplay, and other issues left and right due to rom leaks.
I don't know whether to laugh or cry.
@Zeuseksy Not all of it is even laziness or being rushed. Like making the Exp All a forced feature instead of keeping it optional. I honestly can not comprehend any reason to do that. There's no laziness or being rushed excuse there. It's just straight up screwing over the people who want to play it the classic way, when there's absolutely no reason it couldn't be optional.
I have no clue why companies pull that kind of nonsense.
@BLD yea I think imma pass then. Looks like he was fanboying. Even as a non pokemon fan this is lame. Seems like they arent using the switch to its potential
@glaemay this is beyond brand loyalty...this is like, brand nationalism
I am still on the fence with this game, and this advert really doesn't help. I thought CGI trailers were meant to be epic, over the top and beautiful representations of the final game? This ad did nothing for me.
It literally looks like an upscaled 3DS release. Sorry if that's super negative(!) - I do know this will be a good Pokemon game at its core, so if you want more of the same then it's all good.
Just what could / should have been for a first ever home console release...
Three more days, I’m hyped!
@Elithal it's also quite a subtile way for NintendoLife to acknowledge there is quite a ... rift in the community currently and that they are not a blind follower fansite. That's important for new readers that end up here to see that there is a little bit of objectivity (many fansites don't even dare to say there is a Dexit or a fan outcry)
Gardevoir made the commercial!
But Gardevoir didn't receive any meaningful buffs to compensate for losing it's Mega.
While Gengar got Nasty Plot.
@Zeuseksy,
It's not defending it fella, most of the mass market fans could not care less, it's only people on forums that are obsessed with such things like frame rates etc.
Posting this link cause it apparently slipped past the radar:
https://dotesports.com/pokemon/news/pokemon-sword-and-shield-will-be-the-first-games-without-an-elite-four
Apparently this was announced as far back as September and yet NintyLife and others I frequent somehow mention nothing of it.
These looks like discount games you'd find in the bottom of the movie bin at K-Mart. The graphics and textures are awful. Yooka-Laylee looks better than this. They can't use the excuse of not-enough manpower to excuse the lack of pokemon and decent quality, because they make more money in a day than we'll ever make in a lifetime. They could hire anyone they want, so there's no excuse for lack of quality, except rushing the game, which is a horrible management strategy.
Who the hell runs GameFreak? Clowns? They diverted half their team to make Little Town Hero, a horribly advertised and made game, and now they shove us this half-baked shell of a Pokemon game and expect us to eat it up, with all of it's cut features, pop-ins, horrible textures, and it's lackluster animations and story! If this game succeeds, then the rest of the games will be empty shells of what they used to be!
Yeah I'm pretty sure all hype died at E3
If any of this early analysis of the game is in any way true, oh boy...
@iLikeUrAttitude It's funny because when they did the E3 trailer (IIRC) my hype was very high for the games, since they there introduced the Wild Area, and that was quite ambitious for Pokemon. But then in TreeHouse they revealed the Pokedex cut and it has been all downhill from there.
Yeah, it still looks rubbish.
Sorry Ryan, but I'm not giving GameFreak a pass for being lazy.
Japanese commercials have been consistently better. Not really sure why they seem to scale them down for international ads...
But there's no convincing the haters at this point. They've made their choice to not even give the game a chance because they, who've never programmed so much as an alarm clock, can say Game Freak did a bad job without ever even playing the game.
¯ _ (ツ) _ /¯
@glaemay What nonsense is that you are spewing. Moron
Looks awesome! Great graphics, exciting looking battle animations, I just hope the raids are as good as the sound as that will likely be my bread and butter for replayability.
@Heavyarms55 We’ve seen it before, some things just become popular to hate. Can’t do much about it other than to recognize the vocal minority online is generally a pretty small demographic and won’t really affect the end product for the rest of us.
@Heavyarms55
Have you seen game play? Models disappear and reappear at random, textures that belong on the N64, uneven layering, glitches, and wonky models and animations. I'm not saying I can code better than them, they are much much better than I will ever be, but they are a high-regard company, and it is their JOBS to release a quality product at a reasonable price. They have officially released a low quality product at an unreasonable price, and as the consumer I have the right to feel cheated.
I'm still very excited for SwSh. I'm going to buy it and enjoy it immensely. For me, gamer details like framerate and pop-in and such don't mean anything significant. If this game looks like the last 3DS Pokémon, that's fine and dandy because they looked great to my eye. I am quite disappointed by the incomplete Dex issue, though.
That said, I'll be paying close attention to how these games do financially. We fans can argue our own standards till we're blue in the face; it's the numbers that will impact future development/management changes. If these games tank (relatively speaking - it IS Pokémon after all), it will validate a lot of the concerns the fandom has been expressing, and I would hope it would contribute to any necessary course corrections at GameFreak. I love Pokémon, so I want the GameFreak crew to succeed, to feel happy with their creations, and to be rewarded for their work.
@KingKRoolMain You must have had one hell of an amazingly modded and upgraded N64!
I've seen all the officially released gameplay footage and what you describe just isn't the case. If you want to laugh at the "stupid fanboy" go right ahead because I don't care. At this point I don't have any patience left for the same dry torrent of complaints that I see everywhere, then watch actual footage that doesn't match up.
Go ahead and start a club mocking me and those of us buying the game. You do you. But me, I'm buying the game, and all the footage I've seen, and the leaks I've read, suggest to me that I'm gonna have a real fun time playing the game!
And if I play the game and end up deciding that you guys were right, you can laugh and say "I told ya so." It'll be warranted. Big IF, but if it happens go right ahead.
I was on the fence for a long time but the final list of cut pokemon sealed the deal for me. I'm cancelling my preorder tomorrow.
Lots of morons defending the game here.
Look, if I already know I'm going to hate it, why should I bother to give them my hard earned money when I can keep it for something far better, like Luigi's Mansion 3, Brain Training or Animal Crossing New Horizons?
@Xaessya If that footage is real (and not some stolen/leaked old alpha footage), then it's really shocking!
Especially since last year's Lets Go games were so impressive graphics wise. Highres and super clean. I really enjoyed that game a lot and was impressed by it.
So if all these issues end up in the end product this Friday, then it would seem most of the effort went into the Lets Go games, leaving too little time for the actual Main games.
They should have just postponed it by another year, to clean up the game and fix all these issues.
If Nintendo can postpone Animal Crossing by a year, for the sake of their employees health and quality of the game, then why does Gamefreak feel so pressured to release this game now, no matter the state its in??
Lets hope its just as really old build and most of it has either been fixed and/or will be addressed in a day 1 patch.
@NIN10DOXD Sony entered on the consoles market with the specific purpose to kill Nintendo. They see it as a revenge because Nintendo is a dwarf company who refused to bow down to them and make games for the Playstation. It's very well documented. And many times Sony made games that ripped off Nintendo games. The "smash isn't a fighting game" smear campaign started in 2012 during the marketing campaign of Playstation All Stars.
@somebread Poekmon is an entry level game who create a potential audience for JRPG games and more generally japanese games. You destroy Pokemon, you destroy the japanese industry. Who is currently the biggest western blockbusters seller on the market? Who has the biggest interest to destroy the japanese industry? Yep, Sony.
@glaemay well known Western company Sony
@somebread Well known biggest western blockbusters publisher and seller Sony yes. If you think you support the japanese industry by giving money to Sony you are dumb. The Playstation HQ has moved to California and they're now fully focused at destroying the japanese industry to kill Nintendo.
