It's been a great year for the Nintendo Switch, with many top tier games released just about every month.
One of the biggest highlights was Fire Emblem: Three Houses, developed by the talented team at Intelligent systems. We praised the game itself when it arrived in July and we're glad to say it's now been recognised at this year's Game Awards as the best strategy game, beating titles such as Wargroove.
To top it off, later on in the show, it was revealed Three Houses had won the Players Voice award. This was a three-round 24-hour vote featuring 24 games that allowed players to have their say by locking in their top three games.
Three Houses took 45% of votes in the end and was followed by Super Smash Bros. Ultimate in second place with 22% of votes, EA's Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order in third and Death Stranding in fourth place. Put your hands together for Fire Emblem in the comments below.

Great game that deserved to win.
@Kainbrightside
One of the best games of the year hands down and CERTAINLY better than Death Stranding.
Excellent, hadn't finish it yet but I will get to it.
And that is award number two that Nintendo takes home
I'm really surprised at how everyone unanimously loves this entry in the series. I thought the series had run out of goodwill when Fates came out. But I'm glad they managed to turn things around.

Well deserved. Too bad it didn't get more nominations.
@patbacknitro18 I just couldn't be tempted to buy it myself, though I'm glad those that purchased it enjoyed what they got. Fates didn't interest me either.
I liked awakening though.
I think it should have been nominated for best RPG, but congrats! Great game!
Spent a lot of hours in this game. Congrats.
@Kalmaro I believe Awakening is also a unanimously loved game as well. Apparently enough that for the past several years they just could not stop shoving FE Awakening stuff in everything FE related lol. But I just don't understand how they messed up so badly inbetween the 2 beloved entries.
@patbacknitro18 I did NOT like how they did Fates. I don't want to have to buy 2-3 games to get a full story and 3 houses felt like the same in a way.
Three Houses is what Fates should have been.
Fire Emblem also won player's voice
Too bad both awards were just randomly spoken out, nobody went to stage or anything
@Kalmaro Give 3 Houses credit that you only needed to buy the 1 game to experince all of the story. And having multiple branching paths for the story does add to its immense replay value. Fates should have just been 1 whole game with multiple branching paths like 3 Houses. But even then that doesn't save it from its terrible writing.
Love this game so much.
There was no way this wasn't going to win! Superb game!
Heck yeah! It deserved it!
@Liam_Doolan You should make an article on FE also winning Player's Voice:
https://thegameawards.com/brackets/players-voice?round=3
Fire Emblem: Three Houses — 45%
Super Smash Bros Ultimate — 22%
Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order – 21%
Death Stranding — 12%
@Quarth I will update this one. Thanks for the reminder.
@Liam_Doolan 😃👍
@patbacknitro18 3 house has my respect for going back to 1 game. Though not a fan of how they structured it. With the second half being more of the traditional FE gameplay.
I LOVED this game. Congrats on the win! It should have at least been nominated for Game of the Year
Meh, unless I'm mistaken it's not as if it really had any competition for that title. It's such a far cry from how good the series used to be, going out of its way to discard its own identity at every turn and being more of a poor man's FF Tactics rather than a Fire Emblem game.
Just started my new game +. Don't really have time for it, but it's too good not to play it a bit through xmas...
Such amazing feedback from everywhere. I still have to get it and arrange some time to play.
@Kalmaro Me too, bro. Same exact camp. LOVED Awakening, didn't like Fates at all and am scared to try Three Houses.
Under the christmas tree for me, now I'm really looking forward to it
Brilliant I’m getting this for Christmas!
@Kalmaro The second half of the game still has the same exact gameplay flow technically. You'll likely spend less time in the extra stuff during the second half, (less people to talk to in the monastery, fewer prologues, less grinding etc.) but it's still structured the same as part 1.
Hey IS! You did it! Welcome to mainstream!!
This game is on sale for £35 at amazon/smyths (uk) for those who are interested
So happy 😀 for this. Was my birthday purchase as came out two days before. So addictively brilliant - especially the fishing 🎣 mini game. Will go back and do the other paths once I have some time.
Great game. I'm waiting for the rest of the DLC before my third (and maybe fourth) playthrough. The gift that keeps giving!
Very glad to see this game getting some much-deserved recognition! Though let’s be honest, it should have been nominated for far more categories.
Can’t wait for the new story content to drop in the Spring! I’ll start a new playthrough with Golden Deer as soon as that happens.
It blows my mind that Three Houses could win Best Players Choice by a significant margin but not even get nominated for GOTY.
The bias against anything that isn't action-adventure or action RPG is blatantly obvious and should be called out in the same way the movie industry calls out Oscar-bait bias.
FE is a great strategy game and deserves the award.
I don't like the addition of the RPG element of the monastery and the elongated story. I can see how some do like it. But we have very few pure strategy games on the Switch and I would like to see FE remain a strategy game without the RPG.
I understand that this won't happen since the present game has sold well and has attracted awards. The next FE may well have even more RPG elements built in.
FE is basically a strategy board game with animated pieces. Imagine a game of chess that had to have a story line and roll playing segments between the pawns knights bishops etc. It would slow an otherwise slow game do we n even more
Mario + Rabbits is also a very good strategy game and there have been mixed comments about the adventure part of the game build between the battles.
Literally an awful strategy game with boring samey maps. There are a lot of people blinded by their love for the students that they’re just ignoring the problems the game has.
@Kalmaro 3 Seperate Games 40,40,and 20 and on top of that 40 dollar DLC....
This was the first Fire Emblem game I fully played through, apparently just had the right thing I wanted out of a Fire Emblem game at this moment. I really enjoyed it overall and put quite a bit of hours into it.
I don't get the hype about this game. All I did the first 10 hours or so was walking around, talking to people, doing class schedules and other boring stuff.
If you want strategy: Better play Tiny Metal or similar.
If you want JRPG: Better play Xenoblade.
As I said: Completely over-hyped in my opinion.
@Expa0 It's less like FF Tactics than it ever has been and it's the best entry in the series.
@ViewtifulJotun Same here. April may not have any new games coming that I'm excited for, but that final DLC is all I need!
@westman98 It's also worth noting that the two top Player's Voice picks are both Switch exclusives. What surprised me the most is even with a smaller audience than some of the huge multiplatform titles (or even PS4 games, which have about twice the player base at the moment), Switch managed to dominate the player vote.
Good year for strategy games. Great to see Fire Emblem gain in popularity. Hopefully we have another one coming to the Switch soon...
Thought the structure with the days and months were a little off putting. However it is a great game. I always finish a Fire Emblem game, but I did not finish this one.
This game truly deserves it. Fantastic from start to finish.
