One of the biggest games released on the Switch in 2019 outside of major first-party Nintendo titles, was Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - Definitive Edition. Thanks to the help of this particular version, Square Enix has now announced more than 5.5 million copies of Dragon Quest XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age have been shipped and downloaded worldwide since the initial release in 2017.
This includes the combined shipments and downloads of the PlayStation 4, Steam, 3DS and Switch release. Series creator and game design Yuji Horii provided the following statement about the milestone:
I strongly believe that this figure has only been achieved thanks to our fans who have always loved the DRAGON QUEST series and also the new players who discovered DRAGON QUEST or JRPGs through this title. If I could ever go back in time to meet myself when I was still making the very first DRAGON QUEST, I would love to tell him, ‘In 30 years’ time, DRAGON QUEST XI: Echoes of an Elusive Age has been released and loved by international fans beyond seas and languages.’ I will carry on doing my very best to deliver further DRAGON QUEST titles to our fans worldwide. Thank you very much to all the fans who have enjoyed the title!
Dragon Quest XI S was released during the busy time of September on the Switch, a week after the arrival of The Legend of Zelda: Link's Awakening. Despite having to compete with a first-party title, the game still managed to muster up enough interest thanks to the lengthy demo offered prior to its release – including hours of gameplay, battles, and exploration.
Around the same time, Square Enix also released a number of classic Dragon Quest games on the Switch eShop and before this in July, the Hero was added to Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as a DLC fighter.
Unfortunately, no actual sales figures were shared in the latest announcement, but we do know the Switch version of the game managed to stay on the top of the Japanese charts for a few weeks, and even knocked Link's Awakening out of first place.
Have you bought a copy of Dragon Quest XI? Did you play the recent Switch release or the older 3DS version? Comment below.

1st! I've heard great things about it but havent quite picked it up. Planning to for christmas.
Good for it, deserved I'm sure. I'm curious to see how that number stacks up against other entries in the series.
Congrats to Square Enix. I finished the game maybe a month ago and just started a second game. I found it to be the best game ive played in a long time. It's simply amazing.
I certainly enjoyed it. It was in my top 5 played games in terms of play time this year. But that said it did not live up to the hype I felt waiting for it.
It's just a matter of personal taste, but the game felt like a JRPG that should have had a fully voiced main character and then they changed their minds and reworked it to a "traditional" silent protagonist. The main character feels less like a character than a human weapon that the rest of the cast is controlling.
The gameplay was still awesome and the game looks great on Switch!
Amazing game and an easy GOTY for me. It's not often you find a modern JRPG by Squeenix of all people that can stand up to the genre classics.
Struggling with it tbh, it's a great looking game but I can't click with it
I always wanted to play a Dragon Quest game, after all, I love a good rpg (FF, Chrono trigger, Monster hunter) so it was a no brainer. I played the demo and love it, now I'm waiting for Santa to bring me my copy to continue my adventure
Smash helped a lot it seems, both the Hero DLC pack and locking a timed exclusive spirit behind playing the demo or full game.
My personal GOTY. It hits all the right notes for me.
I hope it does well enough on Switch, especially considering how much work went into rebuilding the game to run well on the platform, and the huge number of enhancements it enjoyed.
Definitely my favorite JRPG on the system.
I just finished this game today actually. Loved the ending, definitely glad I took the journey. Kinda hankering for some DQ3 now!
Mh, I also couldn't get into it, tbh. I really liked the first few hours, but then the story just meandered and I asked myself, what the point is. Sold it yesterday. ^^
I wonder how many were sales outside of Japan though.
Probably under a million.
It's on my list of games I should buy but for some reason DQ games never really appealed to me.
Which is odd because I'm crazy about RPGs. Final Fantasy, Shin Megami Tensei (anything, not just Persona), Legend of Heroes (like the Trails games), Pokemon, Star Ocean, Xeno series (including Xenoblade), Secret of Mana, Tales of, Chrono Trigger/Cross and the list goes on with smaller names or titles.
I play and enjoy most of it (though the tales games are hit or miss with me....they tend to miss more unfortunately).
So why doesn't DQ do anything for me? I did complete DQVIII, played a few hours of DQIX and a bit of the DQXI demo. It's just....boring/OK? I honestly want to love it but nothing's happening, meanwhile every RPG nut raves on about DQ11 and I just don't get it.
What IS the appeal? Did I miss the nostalgia train by not playing DQ as a kid?
It’s a fantastic game. I finished it very happy for my time with it, then continued playing it after finding out the story wasn’t over. At 80 hours + it’s my most played game this year, and I’m torn between if it’s my favourite vs FE3H.
It would had sold more if they also localize the 3DS version too. Some of my folks who play Dragon Quest games nowadays got their start with the DS and 3DS games, to not bring their version of DQXI state-side means a betrayal of fanbase for them. Some of them to this day still choose not to download the Smash Ultimate character and skipped on Dragon Quest XI entirely.
@noutBr Dragon Quest is an RPG where you will have to become the hero of the game to fully enjoy it. You're not playing the character in the game, you are the character of the game and you're part of the story. If you never want to play as a hero before then the games series wouldn't appeal to you. Remember that when you are the hero, you will have to do things a hero do like rescuing people, stay calm, can't kill, protect civilians, and grow with the other characters. If all that sounds boring to you then it's not a game for you.
I'm going to have to choose between this and fire emblem ... But the Witcher calls first.
Played the demo for just over 12 hours, absolutely loved it, bought it but only played it for a few hours more. Too many games unfortunately. But I do want to come back and finish it.
My game of the year. I was hooked and played it almost every day (which is very rare for me) until I beat it. Yet there was still plenty more to do in the game if I wanted to go back. It was definitely worth the wait.
Well done. Me so far level 66!
Played the demo and absolutely loved it, i think the most i've enjoyed any RPG. Still need to get the full game, but all these pre-orders keep flying through my letter box.
@noutBr I came to Dragon Quest as an adult, and still loved it. But I think you are right about nostalgia, in a way. The DQ series is the epitome of traditional turn-based RPGs, from the battle system to the towns and NPCs, but it is lifted above the humdrum by the charm and care that go into every aspect, from enemy types to world-building. It’s always a silent protagonist, so the character and story really comes from the side characters - and this is where DQXI really rises to the top.
I just got to the village with the bathhouse. It’s a lot of fun. I feel like I’ve been playing for hours, but friends insist I haven’t even touched the surface. And that sounded great to me.
@retro_player_22 you're friends need to stop acting like spoilt children and grow up.
@Krull I'll definitely give it a go someday, the game does have a lot of charm.
I've been giving it some thought and maybe the thing that turns me off is the fact that the game still feels very basic and stuck in the past. It's very by the numbers and this severely impacts my engagement in the games in a negative way.
It could be that this is a large part of the charm for fans though, maybe DQXI will be the game to convert me.
Unfortunately DQIX and DQVIII did nothing for me and from what I gather those are pretty good DQ games according to fans.
I'm so glad! One of the best games I've played this gen. If you like JRPGs guys, don't hesitate.
@noutBr
It’s just personal taste. I’m not a huge RPG fan but really enjoyed what I’ve played of this. Whereas I love platformers but can’t get into Yooka-Laylee and the Impossible Lair at all. Which baffles me, but ultimately what you enjoy is entirely subjective.
To me DQ11 is even better experience than Z:TBoTW. Veronica is superb.
@Onion Did you finish the main story?? That's nothing! You still have a long journey ahead hahah
Damn tentacular is hindering my progression! I find the difficulty is all over the place. Either it's to easy or you hit a grindwall.
@Rebusmind The story plot gets stuck at certain point, when the tasks become a bit repetitive (no spoilers). But that's just like 10-15% of the game. One you finishes that episode, and you get all the stuff you are asked, the story starts being good again, with plot twists included, until the end. And beyond! The postgame story is fantastic as well. Surprisingly good. You should give it another chance, mate.
@noutBr I know that feeling bro. It happened the same to me. Until this entry, DQ never really liked me. The story was just.... Pointless, and it was all happiness and stuff.
Believe me, DQXI is NOT like that. Still feels like a DQ, but the story is really good, with many plot twists, the characters are quite profound, the world is huge and beautiful... You should give it a chance. I never expected I would like it so much, being a DQ.
@the_beaver Thanks for your reply! Your comment does instill me with hope that it will be an above average experience for me.
I'm currently playing through Trails of Cold Steel 3 and I've only just started (after completing Cold Steel 1 and 2 for the first time back to back) so it will be a while before I start my DQXI journey though.
I bought Cold Steel 3 discounted on PSN thinking it would never come to Switch, I'm glad I was wrong though
@Expa0 Well to be fair there responsible for alot of those classics. And Dragon Quest has remained of consistent quality.
@retro_player_22 I have no idea what you're babbling on about.
"Some of your folks?" So some of your parents?
I'm one of that 5M. Love the game.
@retro_player_22
I’m not sure the 28 extra sales would have offset the costs. As for not choosing a DQ character in Smash, just....wow.
@AnnoyingFrenzy I don't know but the fact they felt it was noteworthy enough to make that announcement AND promise to bring more worldwide make me suspect it was at the very least "very satisfactory".
If anything this could imply more multiplatform games in the future too since this seem to have helped the title.
It's my personal game of the year, narrowly edging out Three Houses.
Was thinking about playing next year after Witcher 3 and Ni no kuni but now I might keep my palate fresh for Bravely Default 2 as I really liked the first one. Too much choice on Switch, too little time for all these great gsmes!
Game of the year for me. I wonder how much sold in the West? It is amazing and deserves to sell twice as much.
@noutBr yeah dragon quest is a nostalgia train, in which people even like old church save/grinding mechanics. From this link it seems the switch version had additions to improve the game, like skipping cutscenes I kid you not. https://www.gamerevolution.com/guides/589131-dragon-quest-11-switch-definitive-edition-version-differences-vs-ps4-pc
Surprised they mention live-in partner but state it's not same sex marriage. Feels like a drop the ball tomodachi life thing to do if they're gonna mention it.
The retro style revert has been done before, so I get you. Let alone it's full price, though I see it around $40 on the switch which is pretty cheap for that system.
Well, I bought and finished Steam version during launch windows and now grinding my way back to big tree now. Really loved this series, in fact I have bought all DQ series on 3DS.
Love this game, just hit 100 hours the other day. Wrapping up the side quests and Tickington now before I finish the true ending
Personally I feel like Dragon Quest 11S is the greatest jrpg ever released.
Great game, I still need to go back to work on the after credits story.
@Franz Yep you've barely scratched the surface, it just gets better and better.
@Grumblevolcano "Smash helped a lot it seems"
I don't know about that. The 3DS and PS4 games probably already sold well in Japan, and the PS4 game in the US, and it was going to sell on the Switch anyway b/c it's DQ in Japan.
Not saying it hurt, nobody didn't buy it b/c the hero showed up in Smash, well there's always one but I can't imagine more than a couple of dozen people bought it b/c of Smash, and 50 people out of 5.5 mil doesn't even register. What is that, like .001%?
Being on Switch helped, I'm sure it sold a lot on Switch, just don't think Hero in Smash moved the needle in any meaningful way. Not like it's a new IP, it's the 11th game, it says so right in the title.
I'd bet that number will keep growing for awhile. For one thing, I still need to grab the Switch version.
Got it on my Xmas list, really hope they port X with free online
Such a wonderful game, and one of the finest JRPGs ever. Dragon Quest gets both praise and criticism for being a highly traditional JRPG, and it’s true that there’s vastly less fundamental variation between entries than, say, Final Fantasy. But even if no individual gameplay system is revolutionary, DQXI has everything polished to a fine sheen, and is one of the most user-friendly RPGs I’ve ever played. It’s probably my favorite release on Switch this year, and with both Three Houses and Witcher as competitors, that’s really saying something.
more than 4 million of that 5.5 million comes from Japan
I'm enjoying the demo of it. Never played a Dragon Quest game before might get the full version in the future.
@Alexkidd1985 stick with it, it gets good after the first 50 hours!
Yep nobody in North America likes Dragon Quest **sigh**
@the_beaver
I finished the entire game, post story and all. Not really sure what give you the impression otherwise, especially since I specifically mentioned DQ3 afterwards.
Played the demo and bought it online ebay. It’s one of the best games I have ever played
