Re: Random: The Real Reason N64 Lost To PlayStation? Depressing Games And Lonely Players, Apparently

BFahey3

I think regardless of his comments...it all comes down to the games. Most people I knew were pretty split. N64 had great experiences followed by excruciatingly long droughts in games. PS? Not so much. The cd format and subsequent over charging everyone else on cartridges drove developers away in droves. Now the n64 cartridge certainly has held up in value more than the cds but at the time it was a poorly handled decision.

Re: Poll: Have You Ever Had Problems With Nintendo Hardware?

BFahey3

I've been a lifelong Nintendo fan and have only encountered a few issues.

NES - Carts not working, having to change cart location or clean to get them to work.

N64 - control sticks leaving a dusty white residue and not setting to the center...wobbly over time.

DS - cracked top hinge, but very stable considering how many times I've dropped it.

Switch - I dropped mine twice, and it has caused deep scuffing on the joycons, and a chip off the actual console. I've had some drifting problems, and for some reason seems to have lag when docked and playing high accuracy 2d games like megaman 11.

@KingdomHeartsFan I agree, totally on me. But, I will say that I had dropped my 3ds and ds many more times and got nothing more than a few minor scratches. So i'm just saying the durability isn't nearly as high as their other handhelds.

If I keep it docked, these pockets of time would be wasted on my phone instead. Not as fun!

Interesting survey. For me, my switch has seen some major issues with wear and tear. I dropped mine once at a car dealership and a second time in the bathroom. There is deep scuff marks on the joycons and the switch back has a chip missing as well.

Other than that, Fzero would be great! I'd say my most wanted games list includes Pikmin, Metroid Prime 4, Luigis Mansion 3, Animal Crossing, and then some kind of high quality horror game.

Re: Talking Point: Amazon's Efforts To Tempt Gamers Show Why We Need Dedicated Games Consoles

BFahey3

Nintendo has always prided themselves as being a gaming first console, all the way back to the gamecube era. Adding these apps I think is great for the average person that wants to be on their switch as their primary media hub, but on the other hand, this directly competes with people's attention to the games. If Nintendo embraces all the other streaming services, you could argue, it may hurt the indies and all other games that nintendo makes their money on.

Re: Guide: Every Nintendo Console Ranked From Worst To Best

BFahey3

Ooinions are opinions... but I think there's a few things I can argue.

While I absolutely loved the N64 for its high moments, it also had massive game draughts, turned off 3rd party due to the cartridge based decision, and most games haven't aged well. Gamecube continued the alienation by not offering standard discs, odd color console, and some games like Mario Sunshine not quite living up to its predecessor. Wii U - similar to N64, had it's share of droughts, a wonky toy like controller, and market confusion. If I had to rate the consoles I have played, I'd go like this:

1) SNES
2) Switch
3) NES
4) 3DS
5) DS
6) N64
7) Wii
8) GB
9) Gamecube
10) Wii U

None of these systems were horrible, they all had some great games. Wii U to me was the least innovative, most vanilla play it safe games, and small list of games with no 3rd party support.

Re: Talking Point: Do We Still Need Review Scores?

BFahey3

I will say that review score, or not having them, can be a catch 22. On one hand, someone like myself can be a bit obsessive over numbers. I remember checking daily to see if BOTW was still the #1 rated game of all time on metacritic or gamerankings. Yet, there are certainly times where you see games with a less than stellar overall rating ending up with a cult following and eventually make several best of lists.

I fully admit, I don't always have time, and seeing high scores certainly help guide me towards what games are worth checking out. On the other hand, I feel like the industry is very biased. Anything below an 80 on metacritic seems low, whereas anything over an 80 for music can be classifies as a near classic. And then there's the underlying feeling that reviewers are being paid to give good reviews. It happens on Amazon, payolla exists in music, I'm sure it happens here.

So at the end of the day, we consumers need to figure out who has credibility and who's reviews you can trust. I weigh those scores, and the games fun factor much higher than only an aggregate score. Heck, my favorite moments in goldeneye were when you played with cheats and had glitchy animation. Try playing cradle level with slow or fast animation cheats to see what I'm talking about. So funny.

Re: Soapbox: It's High Time Seiken Densetsu 3 Got A Western Release

BFahey3

When I was 10 years old, I told my parents that I wanted NBA JAM for my birthday on the SNES. I remember after a few plays I felt extremely disappointed, and thought it was a shell of the arcade version I had been playing.

I called the owner of the local videogame store and asked if I could trade in the game. He told me I could stop by and take a look at his collection.

I entered his shop, and after constant thinking and searching, I came across secret of mana in a case without the instruction book. I had been reading up on this game in Nintendo Power, and heard nothing but great things about the length, pace, etc. So I took the plunge on my first RPG.

I rode my bike home in the pouring rain with this youthful excitment...I was eager to explore this bold new world.

And I can say, Secret of Mana did not dissapoint. I was entrenched by the angelic music...the opening sequence with the heart beat...and the main character's eventual exile from his hometown. It was heart breaking, but the beginning of a wildly engaging journey...and I loved every minute.

So the point of my story...if you are saying there's an even better sequel hanging out there in Japan, please bring it over. I'm sure my 33 year old self will get as much enjoyment as my 10 year old self did of the original.
