Yesterday, the gaming media was finally allowed to gush about Animal Crossing: New Horizons, sharing reviews of the new release ahead of this week's launch. We awarded the game full marks, and looking at reviews across the board shows that we weren't alone in giving out high praise.
Now, as the review dust settles a whole 24 hours later, we can see that New Horizons has secured itself a Metascore of 91. A Metascore is a weighted average totted up by review aggregator, Metacritic, which takes into account all reviews from well-known outlets.
91 is a mightily impressive average score, and it gives New Horizons the title of 'Best Switch Game of 2020' so far on Metacritic's website, but how does that stack up against the very best-reviewed games on Switch? Well, we've checked through all of the highest-scoring games to bring you this list:
1) The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild - 97
1) Super Mario Odyssey - 97
3) Undertale - 93
3) Super Smash Bros. Ultimate - 93
3) Divinity: Original Sin II - Definitive Edition - 93
6) Mario Kart 8 Deluxe - 92
6) Celeste - 92
6) Bayonetta 2 - 92
9) Animal Crossing: New Horizons - 91
9) SteamWorld Heist: Ultimate Edition - 91
9) Sonic Mania Plus - 91
9) Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove - 91
9) INSIDE - 91
9) Dragon Quest XI S: Echoes of an Elusive Age - 91
As you can see, it's ended up in joint ninth place (unless any further reviews alter the score over the coming days). The 91 weighted average is made up of 49 different reviews, all of which awarded the game a positive score. The lowest score it's received so far is 80/100, although the majority of reviews awarded it 90+.
This Friday really can't come soon enough, huh?

Underboy at 3 Nice
More importantly, it's the highest rated game in the series!
I might pick it up even thought it's a pointless game.
From what I've read, the multiplayer is quite dissapointing, the IU could be better, you can't do much with the neighbors (a step back from Pocket Camp) and it doesn't have touch controls (a step back from Wild World and New Leaf).
I don't know, it doesn't sound like a 10/10 imo.
Doom Eternal joining this list soon hopefully.
Well i played 7 games from this list (AC will be the 8 when it releases)
i dont know if i should be proud about that or not ^^
@the_beaver
Good evening Mr. Negative. How are you?
@Cosats Haha good evening. It's not negativity, man, I just don't understand why they can give 10 to games like this (when they're clearly not perfect), but never give a perfect score to third party games. It's sounds like something that can't be done in this website. It's really weird lol.
But it must be a great game, that's for sure. Fans will have a bang with it, in most places is getting a 8,5/10 or 9/10, it's great. Not perfect, but great.
Can't wait for Friday. Its gonna be good 😁
@the_beaver No game is "perfect", so considering 10 a score given to something flawless is kind of nonsensical.
If a game is everything you want it to be and then some, it probably deserves a 10, which I guess is how the NL reviewer and others looked at it. Personally I'll be happy if it feels like an 8 at least, when I get to play it.
Again: can you explain me why these games are not seen well around the web despite their high scores in the reviews? Is because they're on a weak hardware? It's because the new Pokemon sucked so much that overshadowed them? Just give me a logical explanation please...
@the_beaver Brother, please chill. No need to ruin our hype for Animal Crossing, please go elsewhere if you're going to complain.
I've never played an Animal Crossing game before but this is the one that is going to change that. It looks like it's exactly what I want at this point in my life (in gaming) and will be a perfect way to relax each evening.
This is the game I need to help me pass my boredom since my school got shut down amid Coronavirus. Man I wish Friday would come soon. Can’t wait to sink my hours on another Animal Crossing game.
@mariomaster96 Hold your head up with pride! You’re a gamer and one with taste, nothing to be ashamed of there
@DAHstroy Hahah I didn't know people were so sensitive, yikes.
Sorry to hurt your feelings, mate. But don't worry, as I said, you'll enjoy this FOR SURE. It must be an awesome game, nobody has denied that.
Can't wait to see my fellow goat mate Sherb!
@the_beaver USGamer noted in their review that the servers were not working for multiplayer, so they could not review that portion of the game. They also weren’t able to review multiple people sharing an island. Impressions of those features (for them) will come after launch. They gave it a 4.5 out of 5 (i.e a 9 out of 10).
@the_beaver Not being able to use the touch screen to make designs seems like a missed opportunity. Hopefully they add this ability in the future.
I can't wait for Friday because of Doom 64 not this. But apparently that's just me.
@CurryPowderKeg79 shame doom eternal isn’t releasing this Friday for switch, would show how diverse the switch’s library is. AC I’m not too interested in but doom yes, it’s actually a great ting to say as mentioned above shows how diverse the library is and the breadth of appeal
If they gave sonic mania 91 they should have given Luigis Mansion 3 a well deserved 94.
@CurryPowderKeg79 me too! X
@Big_Nook Metacritic doesn't give the scores, reviewers from various publications do. Also Sonic Mania is awesome.
The top 2 games were fun, but nothing to go back and do for me. I don't care about ratings anyways. If I like it, then I like it.
@Big_Nook Luigi's mansion 3 isn't as good as the past 2 games
@Superzone13 Metacritic only counts scores from official reviewers, the so called "game critics" who ALL get EVERY SINGLE GAME FREE. Which does impact the overall score of a game. If you go by User score you usually see a 100% different picture.
Metacritic is not a credible source for game reviews.
If the reviewer got the game for free the review is ALWAYS an ad for / against the game. For instance a big Nintendo release during a week we also have a big other AAA release, the Nintendo release will automatically be lower in score.
For me however, I stopped counting "review" ads as reviews starting 01/01/2020. I only go by reviews done by people who:
1. bought the game, and:
2. played the game for at least 5 hours, and:
3. Have written the review with at least 3 paragraphs with at least 3 sentences per paragraph. Also stating points they liked vs points they did not and how these points impacted the review score.
Eh, overrated games
@ClassSonicSatAm your right it wasn’t as good.. it was better I completely agree with you. Please share more of your holy opinions we really really care
Hey guys, breaking news! You can play whatever game YOU like, regardless of how it reviews or what other people say about it! There is nothing stopping you from enjoying any game you enjoy except the limitations of your own wallet and free time!
It doesn't matter if a game got the review score you personally think it deserves. If a game gets a 1/10 but you enjoy it, who cares what anyone else says? Have your fun! I do!
JUST STOP HARASSING PEOPLE WHO LIKE GAMES YOU DON'T!
I may have to try this game. It looks like be good to have a hour or two now and again! Tom nook seems dodgy though! 🐻
That’s some good reviews. I haven’t preordered yet but man o man is it hard to resist. If a direct doesn’t come soon I think my impulses are going to get the better of me.
@Big_Nook touch a nerve eh? only thing better about Luigi's mansion 3 was the graphics, wasn't scary at all, and the story felt really short, no reason to replay it could of done with a hidden mansion/harder mode rental at best
