Famitsu's Japanese chart figures are now in for 23rd - 29th March, revealing that Animal Crossing: New Horizons is going from strength to strength.
The game has managed to shift another 727,791 physical copies in Japan alone in its second week on sale, down from last week's tremendous 1.8 million-strong debut. This puts the game on a total of around 2.6 million physical copies sold in just two weeks; its already just 230,000 copies shy of Mario Kart 8 Deluxe's lifetime sales total in the region.
The current best-selling game on Switch in Japan is Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, which has shifted 3.62 million physical copies in its lifetime. Could Animal Crossing beat it? It's certainly looking possible.
Here are the top 10 (first numbers are this week's estimated sales, followed by total sales):

Animal Crossing is a quiet beast when it comes to sales. I expect nothing less from New Horizons.
Animal Crossing killing it? Ya don't say...
Those Nioh 2 sales, tho.
Yikes!
It's not beating Mario Kart Deluxe but I believe it can catch the rest. Deluxe is just too far ahead.
Bloomin’ heck at those Switch Lite sales!
Damn AC has already nearly outsold MK8!
Imagine if it hit four million, physical, in Japan alone... a juggernaut.
The sales are incredible so far but I’m wondering what worldwide sales are at. I would guess 8 million so far.
@mesome713 Developer fools? Who?
Can't say I'm surprised at all. I've already put 70 hours into the game. It's addicting and released during a perfect time when most people are isolated and quarantined.
It's amazing, and fully deserved. Nintendo knocked it for 6 with this one
Living in Japan during the coronavirus pandemic, reading "a total of around 2.6 million physical copies sold in just two weeks" makes me hope that none of those 2.6 million people ride the same train as me. Wait, why am I still going to work??? Oh right, so I can save up the money to buy this game.
@Spoony_Tech You mean Smash Ultimate, right? Because AC is only 232,000 behind MK8 Deluxe right now.
@AmplifyMJ At this rate - it probably could. This game is doing incredibly well.
@WiltonRoots,
How the game is doing this well, with not only the virus to contend with, it also has those legions of disgruntled cloud saving only one island fans to take into account, you know the ones who have obviously boycotted the game.
New Horizons sold more in its 2nd week than New Leaf sold in its 1st week.
It had the 3rd biggest second week of retail sales ever for a game in Japan, behind DQVII and Pokemom Black/White. It may be the biggest second week of sales ever when including digital figures.
@Spoony_Tech Worldwide, yeah it won't catch up to MK8 Deluxe. But in Japan, it definitely will surpass it.
How is it that Nintendo all of a sudden have systems to sale in Japan? For weeks the numbers have been end of generation kind of low. Now the numbers are back up. Does Nintendo hold on to systems in a warehouse, then ship them for big releases like this? Are their manufacturing plants back up and running?
Didn't we just report it lost 81% in its second week just a few days ago?
@Spoony_Tech it's likely going to pass Mario Kart next week.
@Obito_Sigma that was UK chart not Japan.
I'll be curious to see of it maintains its momentum outside of Japan but no doubt this is a great game with ironically perfect timing
@The_Pixel_King I'm basing it solely on the sub title. Not beating Kart 8 deluxe worldwide.
@Obito_Sigma,
That was U.K sales.
It's funny how news works. Another site was calling these exact numbers a "major dive in sales." Like it was a movie or something.
@outsider83 more likely China is starting to get back to normal so the factories are starting to go back to full production
@Spoony_Tech Oh, sorry man. I thought you meant Japan only 🤐
Very nice DobuMori numbers. Nioh 2 numbers hurt though...but I did my part! Gotta stop by the post office to pick mine up.
Awesome numbers for Pirate Warriors 4 Switch. Musou/Warriors games tend to sell better on PlayStation, I was expecting around 70% of PW4 sales to be on PS4, instead it's almost 50/50.
I do wonder... If Animal Crossing hadn't released these weeks, could Pirate Warriors 4 Switch sales be even higher? Plenty of people may be buying the former instead of the latter, in case they can or want only to buy a Switch game.
On the other hand, perhaps all the Switch console sales pushed by ACNH are also helping PW4 Switch, aka, without the ACNH boost, PW4S probably wouldn't have sold as much.
Both are conjecture, who knows which if any could be the case.
With digital sales, we could be looking at close to 4 million copies sold for New Horizons in just 2 weeks. 2 weeks.
At its current trajectory, it could reach ~5 million retail + digital copies sold by the end of April, which would make it one if the Top 10 best-selling games of all time in Japan within just barely over month on the market.
Those Xbox hardware sales numbers are laughable. It's been a similar story through all three Xbox generations.........cannot understand why Microsoft continue to try and crack Japan.
I've had days during this stay-at-home order where I've played AC for hours on end, thought I was done for the day, and then got back on that same night and was right back at it. Any momentary feelings of boredom with this game don't seem to last more than 5 minutes after I turn the Switch off. There have been slower days, but the game seems to know exactly when to add in the right amount of stuff to pick the pace back up again.
Gamestop knew what it was doing lol.
@westman98 Hang on a sec, I'm reading these charts comments, something's missing...I'll fill in.
"Great sales for One Piece on PS4, and good to see Nioh holding on there...I can't play on the GO so no Switch for me."
@WiltonRoots
He hasnt posted here in a while. Wonder why...
@WiltonRoots @westman98 are you referencing cobalt by any chance?
@X68000 Umm....what's an Xbox?
@Otoemetry good guess, I was referring to Agramonte, normally he's in here downplaying anything Nintendo or letting everyone know he's got a PS4 (wow) and he's played everything way before us. But cheaper. I wouldn't be surprised if Cobalt was still here under another guise though...
The funny thing is that the Space Invaders Collection outsold Doom Eternal (In Japan). LOL
@WiltonRoots oh yeah forgot about that one, must have got bored of all the excellent sales news the past few years hahaha
@Otoemetry Yeah hopefully he's finally found his way to PushSquare and sold his Switch, he got lost on his way there ages ago and we got stuck with him sadly.
