Re: Nintendo And Tencent Launch Super Mario Party And Switch Demonstrations In China

Andrew5678

Besides the obvious weirdness of Tencent, Nintendo, and a hotel chain teaming up to promote games (plus Ikea), I'm wondering why they're doing this for Super Mario Party when Superstars is coming out in just a few months. I know they're trying to get as much bang for heir buck as possible, but is Superstars really going to take that long to get to China? It kind of invalidates Super's existence, and that's coming from someone who thinks its a solid game.

Re: Former Star Fox Programmer Would Be Interested In Making A New Entry Without The "Gimmicks"

Andrew5678

Gimmicks are just code for "things I don't like from a Nintendo game" at this point.

Anyway, I don't think scrapping the all-range mode would really be a good idea. It's perfect for dog fights and boss battles, and even stages as long as the scale is pulled back. Beyond the controls, I noticed how some Star Fox Zero levels in all range mode just felt way too open, mainly boss encounters. A full sequel to Star Fox 64 would honestly be easiest, but I'd really like it if Nintendo incorporated more elements from 2 without making things too big.

Re: Nintendo To Give Forever Entertainment "Significant Financial Support" In New Publishing Deal

Andrew5678

Honestly, as long as Nintendo keep an eye on the quality control of whatever these guys are trusted with, I think everyone will be happy. The Panzer Dragoon ports were at least competent, but seemed to lack proper polish. I'm assuming that they'll be handling remakes of titles given their history, so if they're given proper direction, I can see everyone benefitting from Forever taking some of the workload off of Forever.

It does make me wonder what games they'll be working on, but we probably won't see the fruits of this deal come until later on.

Re: Talking Point: Our Favourites From E3 2021

Andrew5678

They were all pretty good for me, but oddly enough, the one I keep going back to is Metroid Dread. The game just gets more and more fascinating to me as time goes on, and the reveal was awesome.

Sadly, that doesn't mean I'll be limiting my funds to just that this year. Advance Wars, Wario Ware, Cruis'n Blast, and those are just my immediate thoughts from the Direct. Shout out to Mario Party: Superstars basically confirming that online is going to be a permanent feature for the seres moving on. Super's online was good, but I'm looking forward to seeing the primal rage that the Mario Party of old can bring out of people in a new package XD

Re: Yes, Cruis'n Blast Is Getting A Physical Release On Switch

Andrew5678

As much as I hope for new IP's, I would be perfectly fine with a ton of Nintendo's older series' making comebacks in modern ways. Old fans will appreciate it, and this stuff will be new and even fascinating to people just learning about it. I'm in the latter camp.

I'll admit, I kind of wrote it off at first, but learning that Nintendo owned it made me curious. Learning that it's still playable in arcades and looking closer at the gameplay, it seems like a really fun game I might pick up. I remember having fun with one or two racing games in arcades years back, so I'll probably grab this to try and recapture that feeling, though I expect it to be enjoyable in its own right.

Re: Talking Point: Nintendo Delivered An Excellent E3 Direct For Fans Old And New

Andrew5678

You touched upon it here, but this E3 does make me want to see Nintendo try handing off IP's more to other devs, with proper oversight of course. Ubisoft with Mario + Rabbids, Wayforward with Advance Wars, and Mercury Steam with Metroid, with the latter proving themselves through Samus Returns. Granted, these studios all have a solid pedigree, with Sakamoto himself noting Mercury's deep understanding of the Metroid series', but Nintendo has enough sway to gain the ear of companies who would collaborate with them to do the bulk of the work. It could lead to something different with entries, while taking the workload off of the main companies.

I agree with the sentiment. If anything, I sort of believe Nintendo focus a bit too much on core gamers with some of these announcements, but only a bit. Kind of surprised people aren't happier with a Direct that has SMT V, Metroid, Wario Ware, and Advance Wars. I was kind of hoping for a bit of Pokemon news, but otherwise most of what I wanted was kind of a pipe dream, and I know how important everything else was to people.

Re: The E3 2021 Awards Winners Are In, But Nintendo Lost Out

Andrew5678

If there were going to be "winners" it was kind of a coin flip between Microsoft and Nintendo. It doesn't feel like much of a grand return for E3, even if I don't have a platform, there tends to feel like there's more buzz for big titles. Microsoft seems to have more stuff with mainstream appeal, while Nintendo focused on more niche games.

Trying to pick a winner is kind of pointless on its own, but this year was meh for most big companies participating. I'm a Nintendo guy, but I'm usually left a bit jealous by gems on other platforms, and this year, I mainly just feel that way for Halo, specifically the multiplayer which looks fun. Never checked out Forza, but racing games have never been my thing, so I can't hold anything against that.

Re: Soapbox: Without A Dedicated Handheld Division, Is Nintendo Less Weird?

Andrew5678

I'll echo a few other voices here to start by saying that Nintendo does have a fair bit of experimentation still. ARMS, Labo, Sushi Striker, Famicom Detective Club, Game Builder Garage, etc. are fairly weird games that no one every really considered existing in any way. While there's still Mario, LoZ, and Pokemon, there are also some less risky titles that are still a bit off of the wall. Pokemon Snap seemed like it would never happen, Clubhouse Games is an idea that makes sense but no one really considered (how many people here know it's a sequel to a DS title?), and Cadence of Hyrule is about as off of the wall as Nintendo's gotten with LoZ since Hyrule Warriors.

I think the problem the writer may have is twofold, starting with Nintendo's production of brand new titles feeling slower. If I had to look back, it's probably pretty average, and even above average output at times, but a lack of a handheld with smaller titles makes it feel smaller. This is the second issue, which is something I miss, is the lack of super experimental small titles. Not just full priced releases, I mean stuff from the 3DS era that was not only weird, but also fairly cheap for a Nintendo title, and was an easy sell for people to get. Sakura Samurai, Dillon's Rolling Western, Box Boy, Pushmo, Harmoknight etc. all had this weird feeling that wasn't quite traditionally Nintendo, but didn't have the standard indie feel. It's hard to describe the feeling.

What I'd like from Nintendo is just for them to launch smaller, more experimental games that don't take up much of a budget. Low risk, but decent reward if they sell alright and even bcause series like Dillon, BOXBOY, and Pushmo. I think the general standards for making things new and shiny have forced thm to shift away from those, hence why I want something simple and cheap so they can still produce their big content. At the very least, BOXBOY got a sequel, and Miitopia got a port, so hopefully they can bring some of the 3DS' spirit over soon like so.

Re: Soapbox: Without A Dedicated Handheld Division, Is Nintendo Less Weird?

Andrew5678

@Ogbert I personally think that the only thing really holding Dillon back from a console release, even just a digital one, is the Switch's lack of a second screen. I've only played some of the first ones, but with how tight some missions can get with trying to manage everything, having a full map in view while playing the game is really helpful.

Hopefully Dillon gets his due. With a full trilogy and a physical release on his last game, the potential was seen by Nintendo, I just hope they think he'll manage with a full release.

Re: Animal Crossing: New Horizons Deserted Island Diary Releases This September

Andrew5678

I'm not too into Animal Crossing, but this manga actually looks kind of interesting. Might pick that up, but I'm probably just going to rent New Horizons the game from my library if I want to try it out. It's really not my kind series, but I feel like I can relax with it for a bit. I mainly just want to see what the latest entry is like since I got bored with New Leaf, but got a little into Pocket Camp a long time ago.

Re: UK Charts: Miitopia Gets Off To A Cracking Start With A Second-Place Debut

Andrew5678

I think we're going to see how far creativity can help push a game along. Miitopa's a solid RPG on its own, but the character creator gives so much potential to party customization. Just the jokes alone are hilarious because of how random they can get. Glad its getting a second shot, and that the Miis are sticking around.

Hoping that we get a few more ports/sequels from the 3DS. Dillon's Rolling Western worked its way into a trilogy and even got a physical release every except for the states, I think it deserves a shot if they can work the game without the 2nd screen.

Ever Oasis also deserves its own fair shot since it came out right when the 3DS was being fazed out. Grezzo's still around, and they've done Switch work, so an HD port is feasible, it's just down to Nintendo and some devs to show interest.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 22nd)

Andrew5678

I recently finished the original Star Fox. I think it's a good game, but the performance causes a lot of problems, and some of the later levels are frustrating because of how much stuff can come at you. I also started Star Fox 2 and, while the Walker feels a bit clunky, I'm enjoying it a bit more after the Normal run. Looking forward to higher difficulties, but I don't plan to aim for any high scores.

Also, I have VA-11 HALL-A on Steam to finish, and I'm eyeballing New Pokemon Snap or a 3DS title to start. It's been a long week, so I plan to relax no matter what.

Re: Review: Miitopia - A Daft DIY Adventure With Boundless Appeal, If You Make The Effort

Andrew5678

I want to pick this up eventually. I'll be finishing my original run on 3DS, and I'll grab the Switch version when I'm ready to go to town. Not sure how far I'll take the character creator personally, but I want to make at least one in depth Mii before relying on others people have created.

Also, I'll probably hold off on leveling up my main character too much. He kept all of the stats and levels despite losing his class, and that tended to make battles a bit too easy from what I last remember.

Re: More Hints At Samus Aran In Fortnite Emerge, This Time In A Comic

Andrew5678

Honestly, the silhouette is pretty vague, and the leaks listed a lot of other odd characters that could have been put into Fortnite. Not like the leaks prove it'll happen, and if it did, it would be weird if Samus was in her armor unless she just absorbed guns and changed what was shot from her arm cannon. We'll see, I'm just kind of tired of seeing Fortnite around so I'm kind of jaded to the idea.

It would be very strange if this happened, mainly because I'd expect Samus to be exclusive to the Switch. Nintendo's usually very picky about keeping their characters on their own consoles, and Fortnite's had console exclusive characters cross over onto whatever platform it's on.

Re: Nintendo Download: 13th May (North America)

Andrew5678

@HIGHscores85 Nintendo didn't even decide to make physical versions in Japan, where these games will probably sell best. Either they lack faith, or the titles are just that niche that even in Japan a set of visual novels won't generate interest.

Edit: To clarify, there is technically a physical version, but that's part of a more expensive collector's edition, there isn't a standard game cartridge for these titles for sale.

Re: Nintendo's Ready For Acquisitions, When The Time Is Right

Andrew5678

Nintendo mentioned buying technology, so I'm imagining (hoping) it'll be someone to help with controller development and improving gyro controls for future systems. Motion controls too, since those have been something Nintendo's been coming back to pretty regularly, and those just keep improving.

If it's an acquisition... honestly, I'd expect it from devs who are either fairly small, or those that Nintendo worked closely with. Game Freak may as well be owned by Nintendo, since Pokemon and a few titles they make are published by them anyway. HAL's in a similar position, Kirby and even more of their stuff is mainly on Nintendo consoles, barring phone titles and some really old hardware. The most confusing is actually Intelligent Systems. As far as I can tell, the first game they launched outside of a Nintendo system is Fire Emblem Heroes, and that's published by Nintendo.

Re: Talking Point: What Are You Playing This Weekend? (May 1st)

Andrew5678

A bit busy this weekend, but I'm currently in the middle of Mole Mania, which I should be finished with soon. Among the many games in my backlog, I think I'll get started on 3D World. Looking forward to replaying it and hopping into Bowser's Fury afterwards.

Pokemon Snap shall come soon, but I think I'll work on other parts of my backlog for now.

Re: Review: Shantae - A Dated Dance That Completes The Set On Switch

Andrew5678

I've always been a bit puzzled as to why this game in particular has always stuck to Nintendo consoles. I'm the last person to complain about exclusives, but Shantae's been pretty consistent with going onto Playstation and Steam since Half-Genie Hero. It's certainly rough, but I can see a market for some bigger enthusiasts wanting to play the original title.

Looking to grab this for myself. It's definitely a gem, and I actually think overall it's one of the stronger entries. Add this and Seven Sirens to the list, and I'll finally have played the whole series!

Re: VIZ Media Reveals Cover Art For Pokémon: Sword & Shield, Vol. 1 Manga

Andrew5678

@Tobiaku If Ralizah started from the first volume, I can see the weirdness. I enjoyed them, but rereading them gave me the impression that the author and artist weren't 100% sure about certain elements of what Pokemon would be like, which could also extend to Nintendo and Game Freak at the time. I've read some later volumes of Black and White, and while different, it doesn't get as extreme as that infamous panel of a Pokemon getting cut in half (which somehow escaped censorship)

Re: Japanese Charts: Super Mario 3D World Returns To Number One As Nintendo Dominates Proceedings

Andrew5678

@Serialsid In Japan, people work a LOT, and are always on the move, so they love portable gaming. The main reason Nintendo's dominated over their was their handhelds-they've always sold great and gotten great support. With the Switch, you have the benefits of a handheld with the option to hook up to the big screen, the excitement makes perfect sense.

I understand Japan not being their main market, but it feels like Sony hasn't done much to appeal to them. A big focus on Western titles, and the PS5 still being understocked after so long (not just Japan, but it's notable since that's their home territory) are just a few reasons people over there aren't enthused for a PS5. I've never been a big Playstation guy, but I can't say I see a lot of reasons to pick up a PS5 right now until more big games line up.

Re: Video: Ten 3DS Exclusives That Could Be Better On Nintendo Switch

Andrew5678

TBH, I think I'd rather have sequel instead of ports of a lot of these games, but it depends on how much they'd gain from them. A Samus Returns style Metroid game could build off of the last 2D title, and have visuals built around the Switch. Kid Icarus could be the same, and the changes could extend to the controls being designed with the Switch in mind.

Ocarina, Majora's Mask, and Star Fox 64 would be better off with ports. It's either that or full HD remakes. Rhythm Heaven's art style would look good no matter where it went, and Ever Oasis may not have sold enough to justify a full sequel-those games deserve ports, but new entries would be preferred.

3D Land and Link to the Past are iffy. They're good games, but I personally think it'd be ore worthwhile to just make new titles building on what they've done. Zelda in particular could do with a new top down dungeon style game, and 3D Land already has a successor in 3D World, so it'd be a bit redundant.

One series I really want to see, but don't have much confidence for, is Dillon's Rolling Western. That was the most successful of the 3DS' original games, getting a whole trilogy and even a physical release in JP and PAL regions for the 3rd game. The problem is how heavily it relies on the second screen for the tower defense aspect, so it would need a LOT of adjustment in an entirely new sequel. As for ports, Pushmo (yes, I'm a dirty yankee) Harmoknight, and Sakura Samurai would be good games that wouldn't need physical releases.

Re: Rumour: Nintendo Switch Pro "Will Have Exclusives", Says Insider

Andrew5678

Nintendo's tried this already with the New 3DS, but no one seems to remember how limited their attempt was. Off of the top of my head, I remember two exclusive titles of note: Xenoblade Chronicles 3D and The Binding of Isaac +. What people don't recall was Nintendo making SNES titles exclusive to the New 3DS. It felt silly, but in retrospect, I have to wonder if it might have been a cheap was of making the New 3DS more attractive. Whatever the case, Nintendo never committed to the exclusives part of the New 3DS. It seems more like the only notable exclusive feature was the control nub that started on the New 3DS, which gave extra camera control to games like Luigi's Mansion and Monster Hunter.

If I'm basing my expectations on that, I expect this "Switch Pro" to be a Switch with some QoL changes and SLIGHTLY improved performance for games. Sony was right to keep the upgrades to the PS4 Pro to just patches that improved performance for PS4 titles, and XBox's gaming 'ecosystem' keeps anyone from feeling left out. This is one time where Nintendo should stick to being boring and just keep differences between the Switch and the upgraded Switch minimal. As long as the standard version is sold with a clear price difference, that should avoid confusion. A cheaper version of something is more affordable, but comes with less features-easy!

Re: Feature: After Fire Emblem And Famicom Detective Club, What Comes Next From Nintendo's Vault?

Andrew5678

Oh, as a poor Nintendo fan doomed to be fascinated by their history, there are so many titles I'm interested in o get some sort of revival. To start with something simple, I welcome more gameplay heavy titles for NSO that don't get translations. Super Mario Picross was easy to figure out, and while it took some fiddling, Panel de Pon was a fun time once I understood how to navigate the menus (with a bi of help online).

For obscure games, I really want a return of StarTropics. I need to play both titles, but title separate from Zelda focused on topdown dungeon crawling would be cool. I also want a big official release for Japan. It was helmed by Nintendo devs from there, but never received any official translation or release there to this day.

For one that's a bit more likely, Fire Emblem: Thracia 776 would be interesting. That's something a lot of hardcore FE fans rave about, and since Nintendo's shown willingness to bring over the original title, perhaps this one could make a return with the series' current popularity.

Re: 'Pokémon Presents' Live Presentation Announced For Tomorrow, 26th February

Andrew5678

Here are what I think are most likely: Sinnoh remakes (not sure if it'll be Let's Go or not), Sw/Sh DLC, Pokemon Unite News, and Pokken 2.

Not sure if I'm up for anything in particular. I have Shield when I want to revisit that, I still need to play PMD DX, and Pokemon Snap is one of a handful of games I'll be grabbing when it comes out. Also as mentioned by Manah, Detective Pikachu news would make a lot of sense, but I'm curious how they'd handle a sequel with theaters in their current condition, and wondering what the game sequel will be like.

Re: New Nintendo Infographic Shows Off The 30+ Games Announced During This Week's Direct

Andrew5678

Plenty of interesting stuff, and because of my backlog, I'm glad there's not a lot I'm eager to buy this summer. The Famicom games look interesting, and the discount for both titles bought together is alright, even if the price could be cheaper. I've been so curious about old, obscure Nintendo stuff like this, so I'm willing to buy it. I've never played Skyward Sword, so that was actually exciting for me, though Nintendo should mention BotW 2 soon. I'm in the middle of a Miitopia run on 3DS, and I'm debating finishing that and getting the Switch version-curious about if the face transferring from 3DS is still available. A lot of variety came from the random faces that other people with the game made. Add SM3DW + Bowser's Fury and Pokemon Snap, and I'm set for the Summer.

Lots of other stuff was cool too. The only one I'm extremely likely to get in the future barring some unexpected development is Splatoon 3. Project Triangle, MH:Rise, and Fall Guys are titles I'll try for free, but not sure about buying them later on.

Re: Pyra and Mythra Are Super Smash Bros. Ultimate's Newest DLC Fighters

Andrew5678

I'd say that Rex would be joining Spring Man's at the bar to cry over not getting in, but Spring Man realistically has a better chance of joining at some point in the future.

Meh on Pyra/Mythra. I wanted more cartoony characters, and in terms of 'anime sword fighters' joining Ultimate, Sephiroth is never going to be topped. At the same time, I was hoping for more Nintendo characters in Smash, and there aren't a lot of picks there right now. Since Rex was considered, this makes sense, and it makes XB3 more likely to happen. Oh well, two more slots, and the choices so far are good.

Re: Video: 11 Great 3DS Games Overshadowed By The Nintendo Switch

Andrew5678

This is a solid list, I'd just replace Captain Toad with another title since it's playable on Switch (though the 3DS port is good).

If I had to add another title, I'd go with Kirby's Extra Epic Yarn. Just a solid port of a great title with a few extra bells and whistles. The same goes for Luigi's Mansion. A bit of a shame these got lost in the Switch hype, but I feel like they considered some easy ways of padding out the 3DS release schedule since production was winding down.

Re: Soapbox: Super Mario 3D World Is The Closest To A Super Mario Bros. 2 Sequel We'll Ever Get

Andrew5678

I thought the similarity I noticed with SMB2 was just in the character selection, but this article touched on quite a few details. Nintendo tends to be weirdly selective when it comes to certain elements that return, and I think it's just coming from what the person working on it likes. Assuming it's all arbitrary and just based on the devs preferences makes sense, even if it's an unsatisfying conclusion.

I thought SMB2 didn't really shown up much and assumed that it was because the game was reskinned from a different game, but elements of it pop up constantly. Bob-ombs, Shy Guys, Birdo, and to a lesser extent Snifits all premiered in that game and have shown up in varying levels over the years. The preference thing makes sense with how they appear, especially with how Wart's only reappeared in his cameo appearance in Link's Awakening. You'd think it was the black sheep of the series, but Nintendo's just really subtle about the influence it's had.

Re: Nintendo's Paper Mario Series Is Now 20 Years Old

Andrew5678

Let it never be sad that Paper Mario is a stagnant series. From an RPG with the first two, to a platformer on the next, to a series of adventure games with varying RPG-lite elements with the last three-and I don't know if that description does those last three games justice. I've played 64, TTYD, Super, and Origami King, with Sticker Star and Color Splash in my sights. While I don't count it in the sam series, Paper Jam was also fun, and I plan to return to it someday.

Overall, I've had a lot of fun with this sub series. I do consider it a victim of Nintendo's very rare tendency to experiment too much with games instead of stagnating on formulas, but I can't deny enjoying the directions taken. It's such a strange set of games, and there really aren't many out there like it. Looking forward to seeing what they do with the next one, and low-key hoping Paper Mario makes it into Smash.

Re: Reggie Admits Switch Was A "Make Or Break Product" For Nintendo After Poor Performance Of Wii U

Andrew5678

Nintendo's situation would have been really bad if the Switch failed. I considered the idea of them falling back on their handhelds, but it seems like they were prepped to give the Switch their full support. The 3DS may not have been immediately erased after the Switch launch, but everyone seemed to vastly overestimate the support it got. The biggest games besides some notable remakes were a handful of new titles that hardly got much press. I'm sure that they had a backup plan, but it definitely would have looking like Nintendo losing ground in the market and trying to recover. It's hardly "failing forward" though, I have to disagree with Reggie on that. That implies that you fail and are rewarded for it. The Wii U years felt bleak for Nintendo, and they turned a lot of stuff around in no small part because they learned from their failings. That's a big difference to me.

As much as I appreciate experimentation, I don't want people risking their businesses for it. The Wii U had a lot of issues that the software covered for, and the Switch is a massive improvement. Keep most of the hardware experimentation in the R&D phase, and for software, at least mess around with new stuff and spin-offs, and I'll be happy.

Re: Tingle's Designer Takaya Imamura Has Retired From Nintendo

Andrew5678

The general reaction to Tingle does say that Nintendo's general idea on his popularity is on point. Big in Japan, divisive in the rest of the world. I'm pretty neutral on him since he seems like an alright guy, just very weird, and a good example of culture differences since he's considered hilarious in Japan. If Nintendo ever wants to push smaller, more experimental titles, I wouldn't mind a digital-only game focusing on him since those seem to be good.

As for Imamura, it seems like he's had a solid run when it comes to influence. Sad to see him leave, but hopefully the new guard adopts what he's learned for the future.

Re: Random: Disgruntled Fans Spam Nintendo Tweet In Response To YouTube Soundtrack Takedowns

Andrew5678

I can't remember any sort of major ban of Nintendo's lasting since people are constantly reuploading stuff, especially if there are take downs like with music. People also have short memories, so it's always a minor inconvenience in the long run since the music comes back. It kind of makes me want to download some songs from Youtube as MP3's so I have them on hand, and don't have to look hem up again.

Also, good to know Nintendo's Twitter comments are going to be obnoxious and off-topic as always.

Re: The Game Awards 2020 Will Feature '12 To 15' New Game Reveals, Geoff Keighley Confirms

Andrew5678

I'm hoping for Bayonetta 3 to make an appearance. That game has been AWOL for a while, and I get the feeling it's close to completion, assuming that there were no roadblocks we haven't heard about. Maybe something for No More Heroes 3? It was listed for 2020 not too long ago, so it can't far off from completion either.

I'm not too hopeful for BotW 2 showing up, Pikmin 4's is Schrodinger's game announcement, and any other guessing is just going to be a shot in the dark. I'm honestly more concerned about tradition Directs returning, but there's no way Nintendo would shove too much news onto the Game Awards. We'll see.
