VIZ Media, the same publisher behind Ask Iwata, has shared a first look at the cover of Pokémon" Sword & Shield, Vol. 1 manga series. It'll arrive on 10th August and is available to pre-order now over on Amazon and is priced at $4.99 USD.
This series, written by the legendary Hidenori Kusaka (responsible for the past Pokémon Adventures series), follows Casey and Henry - who share a dream of participating in Gym battles. Here's a rundown of the Vol. 1 paperback:
Excitable Casey and easygoing Henry share a dream of participating in gym battles. For Casey it’s a chance to become reunited with her missing Pokémon. For Henry, it’s a chance to search for the legendary Rusted Sword and Rusted Shield.
Casey, a hacker who invented the Dynamax Simulator, and Henry, a boy who repairs gear for Pokémon, both dream of entering the Galar region’s gym battles. But they can't enter any tournaments without the support of the local champion, Leon! Maybe helping Leon herd a flock of wandering Wooloo off the train tracks will earn them a recommendation?

When I saw the headline, I was hoping for the much anticipated Roger Mellie Odyssey.
Legend of The Fat Slags would be worth a look 👻.
I've been reading Pokemon Adventures recently, and saying it's weird would be a bit of an understatement.
It was hard for me to get into any Pokèmon manga. Something about them seem boring and not interesting. I tried and tried and l just couldn't. I'm sure people who loves the books will be happy with this new one.
@gazamataz @X68000 LOL, when I was a child in the early 90s I managed to get my dad to buy me a C64 Buster Gonads Viz game without him noticing what it was. He was furious when he found me playing it and returned it to Electronics Boutique!
This article reminded me straight away of that game. 😂
Does it include all 898 Pokémons? If not, no buy.
I just want everything about this gen to be over.
Casey and Henry? Why aren’t they called sword and shield? They had no problem naming the protagonists X and Y, but this is where they draw the line?
@Munchlax If not Sword and Shield, why not Victor and Gloria? I don't think Adventures has ever strayed from the most canon names possible, or at least the version names.
why Leon look like a marionete in this cover art?
I saw "VIZ" and for a brief moment I thought I might be getting the Fat Slags game I always dreamed of....☹️
@gazamataz Great minds think alike. I was just saying the same thing. A Roger Mellie game could be quite hilarious as well.
@Ralizah Except for Zapdos Moltres and Articuno its not that weird? Its different from the game, but so is the anime.
Will wait on these to get collected in full volumes with Adventure in the title.
@Ralizah How much weird are we talking about? I haven't read the manga but I used to watch the original anime back in the day.
@samuraicop As a Pokemon fan I actually think this manga is among the best content we get. Its easily better than the anime and the story is better than the games.
@Fujimoto-San Weird enough that, aside from a few similar characters, the setting, and, of course, the designs of the Pokemon, you'd be forgiven for thinking it was some other franchise entirely. Thematically, tonally (Adventures gets surprisingly violent), character-wise, story-wise... it just didn't feel Pokemon-like to me.
If anything, it feels more like what I've seen of the Digimon anime.
@Tobiaku If Ralizah started from the first volume, I can see the weirdness. I enjoyed them, but rereading them gave me the impression that the author and artist weren't 100% sure about certain elements of what Pokemon would be like, which could also extend to Nintendo and Game Freak at the time. I've read some later volumes of Black and White, and while different, it doesn't get as extreme as that infamous panel of a Pokemon getting cut in half (which somehow escaped censorship)
@Munchlax I checked, and the one time they bent the rules like this was with the Black and White 2 adaptation. They named the MC's Blake and Whitley, which is still closer to the tradition than these names.
I tried to read the first 1 a while back and couldn’t bare it much.... I read every chapter until today of the adventures manga, liking them all but Emerald, but not this gen, it feels of like everything else in gen 8
@Ralizah I see.. I've heard similar things about the manga(s), so I'll probably pick one of these up eventually. I'm not one to fuss over details, although I do hope it isn't too different.
I'm not one to talk though, as a kid I didn't even know Pokemon was a game. I just thought it was a cool show, ha ha.
