Not my personal pick, but eh. I do own XC2 from launch (special edition), but due to not really understanding the battle systems and personal circumstances at time of launch, I have not wanted to go back.

I am surprised it wasn't Rex though, so good job for the different choice.

Pretty interesting how ARMS and XC2, the 2 games Sakurai said barely missed having a character in the base roster, are getting characters in this Fighters Pass.

Was this Direct a massive disappointment or what? Aside from the new Mario Golf it was such a lightweight presentation. Aonuma's announcement that there weren't any BotW2 announcements literally made me laugh.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is about 30 times the game Smash is, so I'd say Smash should be proud to host a second Xenoblade character!

You know, I bet waiting was planned, because Pyra/Mythra was a pretty big reveal in game. If they had put them in Smash when it was new, it would have been a pretty big spoiler.

Really cool to see Pyra and Mythra instead of Rex.
He was unbearable in XC2.
Granted he's just a kid but he's the least interesting characters of all the playable ones. Yes, even Tora.

Instead of getting an anime swordsman we got an anime sword.

Not as over-the-moon for them as Sep, but I liked XC2 so good choice, I guess.

Xenoblade Chronicles 2 is such an awesome game, so I am more then happy to see Pyra 'n Mythra get into Smash. I actually thought it was a XC2 DLC announcement at first, though.

I am not surprised by this but I didn’t expect the dual role after they split the previous dual characters. I would love it if a merge option was put back on the characters that were split. My Sheik game tanked after brawl. I can balance Zelda/Sheik but not one or the other.

Awesome pick! I was actually relieved when it was revealed to be Smash related, as I just got off a 140 playthrough of XCDE, and am not sure if I'm ready to jump back into another Xenoblade epic, lol.

I was confused why they made such a boring xc2 dlc trailer because it showed nothing new, then I laughed out loud when I realised it's Smash. Good pick! Definitely buying this one.

@UltimateOtaku91 Yes, unfortunately they have to in order to maintain an E rating. This style of self censorship doesn't bother me though, especially if its a character being added to another franchise. At the end of the day, Nintendo wants to keep an E rating for Smash; so be it.

Honestly though, even though it is the anime swordfighter trope, I was surprisingly delighted here. While my top picks are Eggman, Crash and Master Chief, this could have ended up being a MUCH worse pick, so I'll definitely be picking Pyra and Mythra up. Nice to get more Xenoblade representation.

As always, I need Nintendo to release the final mural as a poster.

I really want Diskun to be playable in Smash.

@clvr Except the studio, Monolithsoft has helped Nintendo out on many occasions on other games like BOTW's gigantic map, a game that sold many a Switch on launch.

So of course Monolith are going to be allowed to continue their own games, ports/remaster's and get treated to stuff like Smash representation. Xenoblade isn't going away, it's as much a Nintendo franchise as all you favs, and being owned by Nintendo is also a huge plus as well.

XC2 and XC1 Definitive Edition still sold highly. There is a fanbase for this franchise and believe me, tomorrow will bring an explosion of fan art with pairings with the other fighters.

@Trajan I just wonder if the netcode is any better, or is there a way to see ping? I cant even remember but last I recall my friend had to wait until after a game, to kick the lagger and that's if he could even identify which person was lagging the game out

@BrintaPap When I say that, I don't mean that from a mechanical standpoint. I fully acknowledge the incredible amount of work and talent that went into and is still going into Smash. Mechanically and in terms of programming, it's a phenomenal achievement of game design.

And I respect the level of skill that the top players have and the competitive aspects they enjoy.

But to me? It's just not that interesting of a game. It's fun at parties or for playing with friends on the couch. It's cool to see characters who would otherwise never appear on screen together, together. And it's a fighting game that each installment has given me a couple dozen hours max of fun running through the arcade mode and multiplayer.

And that's it.

The Xenoblade series however are games that have given me thousands of hours of entertainment. They are games that each time I go through them, I find new things and experiences. Xenoblade leaves me with memories! Stories as and in most cases, more involved and dramatic than many books, movies and other games I've played! I'll never forget Zanza emerging from the Monado, finding out the truth of the World Tree exploring that incredible world in Xenoblade X!

I just find JRPGs so much more satisfying experiences than smashing Kirby or Snake off the edge of a map for the gazillionth time. I just don't get pulled in to fighting games even remotely like a series like Xenoblade.

In the end, it's just my opinions of course. I said my comment the way I did because I knew it would annoy some folks. Tad bit of a deliberate trolling there. lol

This is a character I wanted in the game. I did think it was going to be Rex though. And he would have blades including her help with attacks. But I suppose this works. I am thinking they might be saving something like this for the heroes in astral chain. That would be an unique fighter.

Opening a full direct that we were expecting for 500+ days with Pyra and Mythra as smash DLC it's actually a fair rapresentation of the rest of the direct.
Like..."yes, and? Oh ok, and? Oh nice! And? Ok now we'll surely have the big surprise" and we got Splatoon 3. Which...yes, I'm up for it but I'm also very suspicious about it.

At least it's not another Fire Emblem character...

@clvr you can make a contest of who should and shouldn't be in Smash and your selections are probably way different to mine and everyone else's.

Pyra/Rex have been top of my list all this time and I know many more who wished the same. I'm not a fan of Minecraft but many younger folks are and were happy, I've never beaten FFVII but still thought Sephiroth was a great choice. Hell, I thought those choices were interesting polar opposites on who they appeal to.

Why Pyra? List of things I've mentioned, new or not, probably or perhaps something Sakurai will likely explain in the demonstion video. Either way, one fanbase got their wish (Even when it seemed unlikely after that Rex Mii outfit) and 2 more fanbases will get theirs later this year. Will it be one of yours, maybe. But keep in mind there are probably way more games out there you don't play with strong enough fanbases than ones you are a part of or enjoy.

@BloodyMurder Naw. I still expect a Xenoblade X port to happen, they're just gonna be saving it for a slow month at some point or when enough time has gone by since the last Wii U port.

Nothing wrong with the character, still haven’t played a Xenoblade game yet though. I find it kinda funny at first because Nintendo did not want to release this series on the Wii in the west some years ago. Now we got another rep in Smash.

These two are the most exciting dlc fighters for me yet! Absolutely pumped to have Xenoblade Chronicles 2 here! I thought it would get skipped over.

I don’t really find fighting games fun outside of local personally, never mind when they perform horribly.

Most exciting character reveal for me yet. And they did it perfect by keeping Rex out. Feel like I finally had my own personal YouTube-worthy reaction. New main, can't wait to play them!!!

While no-where near as depressing a choice as a Fortnite character (though they may get to that later...) as someone who loved the first Xenoblade, but was thoroughly turned off by the sequel's hyper-anime art-style and fanservice-heavy female character designs (both of which are personified in Pyra's design), this pick doesn't really do much for me, especially when there was a decent chance of Crash Bandicoot being included instead (though that may also happen later on).

I think it's hilarious that seemingly everyone on the internet is sick of anime sword fighters and Sakurai added the most cliched anime weeb sword waifu to Smash.

It's great.

It looks like an interesting character for sure. I'm pretty okay with this. Especially the swapping mechanic seems cool.

I'm really happy to see that Nintendo doesn't feel like they have to stick with main characters for Smash additions. Pyra is a much better design than Rex, and I can think of a few Xenoblade characters I would have prefered over Shulk...

I'm not super familiar with Xenoblade Chronicles, but I'm all for trying out new characters in Smash.

Pyra will be the reason I get back into Smash after not touching it for over a year.

Xenoblade Chronicles is fantastic, so I hope that this leads to more people trying the series out. Really happy with all of the support Nintendo has given the series, and I'm really excited to try out Pyra and Mythra!

Best part of the direct! XC2 is the Switch'es best exclusive, so I'm really happy about this! Although, it's a shame they've spoiled a major plot point for those who haven't played (again).

@Blooper987 I am not familiar with the characters as much as Shulk, but I applaud Smash for balancing the male/female characters ever since the Wii U game.

However, her inclusion changes some predictions of mine. Fit Ring Girl could be next and that could mean the final slot is for a 3rd party character. If that is so then I want Ryu Hyabusha in for sure.

@Trajan I think it is more fun to play against people that aren't masters on every particular movement. However, to me, it is a wonderful museum years of games put together. It is a highlight in gaming history!

@Kevember I thought it was pretty alright. Pyra/Mythra, NMH3 release date, Mario Golf, Legend of Mana, Project Triangle Strategy, Skyward Sword HD, Splatoon 3. Could there have been more, yes (that DC game shouldn't have been in the direct IMO, much less wasted 2 minutes, and the Triangle Strategy game took a bit long for a game that's not coming this year) but what we got was pretty good. I wouldn't call it a massive disappointment but that's just me. Anouma saying there's no BOTW 2 news was really disappointing though.

I believe when most of the XC2 fans asking for Rex in Smash, they actually mean Pyra & Mythra. Having Pyra & Mythra holding the balde is better than let Rex fight and watch his blade stand behind transferring Ether.
Off Topic though... Every time when I see Pyra & Mythra's censored Smash outfit, it makes me wondering what happened to Tokyo Mirage Sessions #FE. Just compare XC2's Smash outfit with Tsubasa's censored wedding outfit in #FE, seriously, WTH? If Nintendo allows XC2, why ruin #FE? Or just Nintendo/Atlus being lazy and not willing to redesign their outfits properly?

Always thought TMS is a Nintendo game because it's published by Nintendo globally and even listed as 「任天堂のソフト」(Nintendo's game) on Nintendo's Japanese official website. (Just like Astral Chain, developed by Platinum and published by Nintendo)
But since Atlus made the decision and did the localization, yeah, shame on them.

And they gave us the redesigned Mythra that wears tights.

my prediction for the last two. one will be a Pokemon from sword and shield, since that gen is not represented in the game. and I think Nintendo will not let that slide. and the last one will be a big 3rd party character like crash or doom guy to go out with a bang for the very last character.

@MS7000 dude, give another try! ill be honest with you.. "it will be each time harder to complete".. i think with around 90 hours the game continues to present and teach you new mechanics.. but it's worth it! i just started the first one definitive edition.. everyone says it's a better game.. so far, i prefer the second wayyy more!! my advice give another chance!

@Lony85 that is the spirit bro!!! like I said in another post.. this is my first smash ever (arriving soon in 2K hours of it) the quality of each character they add, is so high... i just put min min into the elite (I never played nor I dont have the will to play arms).. before, it was byleth, I played and loved FE, but he is so "boring" but again, playing with him in smash is amazing! BTW, whi dont u give a try to XC2?? such a great game, the soundtrack, mt god!!

I'm not into Smash but will give it another shot with Pyra being in the mix. XC2 is easily my favourite game on Switch. Let's just all be thankful we don't have to hear Rex mention the 'power of friendship'.

I feel like they’re scraping the barrel a bit with Smash characters when there must be so many interesting and iconic franchises not included. Tomb Raider, Crash, Astral Chain (now Nintendo own the IP), final fantasy thats not VII, Travis from NMH, more Pokemon, paper Mario, Geralt, Resident Evil..

Also I’m hoping that the last dlc character will be Waluigi as people have been asking for ages.

I thought this was a cool reveal, but it also reminded me that I need to play through Xenoblade Chronicles 2.

Wow, despite being yet another character with a sword, the fact that this is (a) a character from a series I like, and (b) another female character (though the ridiculous booblyness of both of these characters is cringe-worthy) is pretty awesome. I would have preferred Elma, but I'm happy to have anything remotely Xenoblade-related, so I guess I have to take back my previous complaints about the 2nd fighters pass. Also, I guess I need to actually play this game since I've still barely touched it since even before the first fighters pass.

I thought it was a solid direct, and I'm glad to see more female fighters (especially ones that aren't avatar swaps like Wii Fit or Villager).

@Kirbo100 Even if he doesn't (and I doubt that's the case) he isn't God or Supreme dictator, he works with enough other people who probably do care.

@Trajan I'm largely the same, fighting games online is full of people that just practise with same fighter over and over, I'm more casual play style and cant beat local play with a friend and a few beers

Though my friend sucks at FG so it's kinda boring sometimes being so easy

That's why when playing FG online I like to try and find online friends to play with rather then randoms

I'd say that Rex would be joining Spring Man's at the bar to cry over not getting in, but Spring Man realistically has a better chance of joining at some point in the future.

Meh on Pyra/Mythra. I wanted more cartoony characters, and in terms of 'anime sword fighters' joining Ultimate, Sephiroth is never going to be topped. At the same time, I was hoping for more Nintendo characters in Smash, and there aren't a lot of picks there right now. Since Rex was considered, this makes sense, and it makes XB3 more likely to happen. Oh well, two more slots, and the choices so far are good.

I plan on playing xenoblade 1 (and prolly 2 too) after I’ve finished my last 3 trophies on Persona 5. I look forward to it. Been playing a lot of RPG’s as of now.

@Tobiaku They still censored Pyra and Mythra though. Although Mythra's spirit was already censored, Pyra's wasn't, which is extremely odd.

@BrintaPap I'm also playing through Persona 5 for the first time! I was thinking of starting up Xenoblade afterwards too lol

@TheERaichu I heard about that. I have the fighter pass so I'm getting her either way. (I probally would have bought her anyway.) Pyra is awsome, and if that edit was needed I can live with it. Sakurai has said his opinions about age rating boards before so I trust him.

I finally got around to watching that video and... it was kind of weird. Still, I'm going to have to bump Smash up a few places in my backlog now because I'm so excited to finally have a new Xenoblade character(s) in that game that's also not Rex. As a side note, I put something like 160 hours into Xenoblade 2 and that's the first time I've heard any of those people speaking English. That was also weird.
