It's telling of where Nintendo's at right now that they had to announce this beforehand rather than trusting their consumers to tune in. I'm excited for this announcement, but it would have been nice to be a complete surprise (which is what made Joker's reveal so good).

Kratos. Never gonna happen, but his wide assortment of moves, weapons and magic would be a great addition to the game. Technically, he appears in a game which runs on a Nintendo system... On that note, wouldn't be surprised to see a generic Fortnite character added.

you know i wanna go in with high expectations but i know that will only lead to me being disappointed. Realistically i think it'll be crash or dante but i have no connection to any of them. I would like a persona protagonist that y'know, actually represents the series. maybe p3/p4 as p1 and p2, their personas could work something like they do in p4a or they could use different personas for different specials, smash attacks, aerials, etc. or we could get a simon/richter kind of deal where they're echo fighters, but since p3's main persona is associated with fire and p4's lightning, they could work as echo fighters with the same moves and all, but slightly different animations and effects. It's a huge stretch, and i know it won't ever happen, but that's my ideal character at the moment.

I was always hopeful for Paper Mario as a fighter, I figured he’d be announced alongside the release of Origami King, but I’m done being hopeful. I’ll just take what I can get at this point.

With all the smash related news as of late I wonder if this reveal will lead to a lot more negativity than it deserves. Fans should keep in mind that Sakurai and co have no say over what the law team does.

• M Theory (basically they stopped showing logos for the Fighters Pass in NA during the Byleth presentation at the same time we got Altair - but the Assassin's Creed logo also wasn't used in NA, so it seems to be a weird ESRB limitation that applies to the second pass)
• Cacomallow Mii costume leak from last year
• Vault Boy is already in as a costume, so Nintendo was in talks with Bethesda about Smash content

Ryu Hayabusa from Koei Tecmo's Ninja Gaiden series, to coincide with the release of the Ninja Gaiden Black trilogy on Switch...would be my guess.

Look I never played Mario RPG so I don't care about Geno. And I am baffled why Walugi is literally in every Mario sports/party game but isn't in Smash??

However I am hoping for Fortnite Jonsey/Peely/etc. I know that is not what the hardcore smash community wants, but I feel like they only want the most obscure deep cuts and not what kids are interested in today. Minecraft was genius because kids who never played Smash have someone they can care about besides Mario.

Fortnite like or not is one the biggest game in the world right now (maybe fighting Minecraft for top spot). Fortnite is probably the highest grossing game on Nintendo Switch. Our household alone has paid hundred's to this "free" game on Nintendo Switch. It makes sense for Nintendo to bring some of those eyes to Smash.

If I was going to say other 3rd party characters that should come to smash I would say Crash, Dr. Eggman (I mean he would be epic), Dovakin (Skyrim) makes the most sense.

And first party - Paper Mario, Walugi, Ring Fit Adventure characters, Pokemon and Toad.

My personal hope is for Rayman to be announced, coinciding with a new game announcement for his series. It's kind of a pipe dream, but Nintendo and Ubisoft have worked together before, and Rayman is long overdue for some exposure. He's also their most iconic character, and there are already AC and Rabbid costumes in, so there's some presence from the company.

I've also been pining for Crash to get in with his recent revival. The de facto Playstation icon duking it out alongside gaming's best would just be so right, and he'd fit in great with the cast. It would also soft deconfirm Tracer from Overwatch getting in since Activision owns and publishes both titles, and she's literally the only character I don't want to join that has a reasonable shot of getting in. And if she does, that'll be my biggest disappointment with the DLC out of the way with 3 more newcomers to look forward to (Minmin was my 2nd biggest disappointment)

@Euler I think it's more so people are interested in watching the show. Casual audiences are probably curious, but online, people are kind of jaded about big industry hosted award shows. It pretty much becomes advertising for pre-approved games, and people are assuming TLoU2 will sweep the awards due to having the correct politics, rather than its own merits.

@otoad62, whatever you may think of TGA there's no denying that people tune into it. The viewership has gone up every year since it premiered (in 2014 they had under 2 million viewers, but last year they were up to 48-49 million).

Would really like Sora from Kingdom Hearts.
Will probably get Jonsey from Fortnite.
The Doomslayer or Rayman would also be nice.
The Prince of Persia along with a PoPSoTR would be interesting.

@Andrew5678 The Last of Us 2 is a really well-made game. Whatever your views are on its storytelling agenda (personally, I don't believe that everyone who disagrees with an idea/demographic automatically hates them and wants to see them destroyed, and that harmful view is stopping some valid and necessary discussion around some of the issues being raised in the game) the fact remains it's one of the best-made games of the year. Still doesn't touch my personal favourite this year, Super Mario 3D All-Stars.

Realistically, it is most likely going to be a Hyrule Warriors fighter, maybe the Champions, but most likely Terrako or Astor

Personally hoping for Adol Christin, or maybe a Trails protagonist. I've been on a Falcom binge since quarantine started, hopefully someone at Nintendo has been too. Most likely though, we'll end up with Crash or Dante. Worst case scenario, we get Geno.

If it's Waluigi I'm buying a PS5.

I think we all still have the leaked game awards video call where the creator of fortnite had no comment on it getting into smash still fresh in our minds? Hate it or not, Nintendo would want to do something big for the game awards, they wouldn’t want to pull off a geno, which will make nobody new join the game, or put in a popular character so more people buy your game? The only other character I could see happening is doom slayer after it just released on switch, and today is its anniversary.

I'm hoping for someone completely wacky and off the wall. If not Waluigi or someone like Skull Kid, I would absolutely love to see Phoenix Wright get a nod. I just think the sky's the limit for what they could do with his moveset and his Final Smash sequence

I am not a member of the Smash Bros. fan community (never played a single game), but I am absolutely fascinated at Nintendo's evident success in sustaining interest in a single title over multiple years.

OTOH, speculation on this subject is pretty fun. Some of the conjecture here is interesting, but it is clear to me that Puppet Iwata has escaped the attention of everyone here. This new character will be heinously overpowered at launch, of course.

(If Puppet Iwata, Kaz Hirai and Don Mattrick appear in any fighting game, my purchase will be immediate.)

Fingers crossed for Crash. I think a character like that would have the biggest impact at these awards. Conversely, I still don't think revealing Joker there 2 years ago was the best character to reveal for that audience.

@JimmySpades yes, if Zelda does ever get another fighter, it would almost certainly have to be Impa. I assume they'd go with her young Age of Calamity version, as she is considered canon. Still I'd love if they went with her non-canon original Hyrule Warriors badass version.

@N8tiveT3ch people just hate how Nintendo is treating their games on a competitive level. They still like Smash as a game though. But they feel that Nintendo's actions are putting the future of the game on an esports level into jeopardy.

@Narrator1 no, that was the case for the first fighter pass. Sakurai explained that overall his team got to choose the fighters for the second fighter pass. However, it sounds like Steve was a fighter that was being pushed by Nintendo from the start, Sakurai kept saying it couldn't be done, but eventually found a way to make him happen. So his inclusion is more in line with the choices of the first pass, but otherwise it doesn't appear that the second fighter pass choices have been forced upon them like they were with the first pass.

I'm ready for the upcoming arguments about whoever it is.

I'll never stop rooting for Waluigi but I can't help but feel, given the venue tonight, it'll be Fortnite.
People saying the crossover with Jonesy in Smash and Samus in Fortnite is going to happen seems to make a lot of sense to me.

I got "my character" with steve so i'm just happy for new content. I don't really mind the fortnite rumors, but I do think Doomguy or master chief deserve to be in first as they kinda revolutionized the shooter genre

I can't really get excited for Smash anymore.

It's not really that fun against a CPU all the time and Nintendo hasn't got dedicated servers so the online is junk.

Only good with friends coming over and since Covid 19, that hasn't happened too much.

I hope Nintendo announces something else but they've let me down continuously this year so i won't be holding my breath.
