Mergers and acquisitions have been the talk of the town since Microsoft completed a $7.5 billion deal with Bethesda last year, so what's Nintendo's approach to acquisitions moving forward?
In a press conference following the company's full-year earnings results earlier this week, president Shuntaro Furukawa touched on Nintendo's ¥1 trillion ($9.2 billion) cash reserves and said any potential acquisitions in the future would likely be in response to "rapidly advancing" tech innovation.
Here's his comment in full (Nikkei via VGC):
“We need to secure cash reserves to ensure financial stability, but if we need to respond to rapidly advancing technological innovation, we may acquire companies that possess the technology”
Furukawa previously explained how Nintendo doesn't intend to "blindly acquire companies" as it does not believe it will necessarily improve the value of entertainment the company provides.
Nintendo's most recent acquisition was actually at the start of this year - when it acquired the Canadian developer, Next Level Games (aka the team responsible for Luigi's Mansion 3).
The reasoning behind this according to Furukawa, was because Next Level had already been a long-time development partner of Nintendo, and making it a subsidiary would further improve the quality and speed of development.
What acquisitions would you like to see Nintendo make in the future? Share your thoughts down below.

1 trillion yen??? Do they have a big Scrooge McDuck style vault?
Sounds like pretty standard stuff. Although honestly I don't think Nintendo's ever been in a financially poor situation. Not to say they haven't had a product bomb of course (cough, Wii U, cough) but as far as I've seen, Nintendo's actual company budget has been say "comfortable" for a very long time since their approach to spending is extremely conservative.
Nintendo should acquire GameFreak and then give the Pokemon IP to Monolith Soft
I was excited to hear about the acquisition of Next Level and looking forward to what they have in development, I still think Luigi’s Mansion 3 had some of the nicest looking effects on the switch. Loved every minute of it.
It's time to acquire Level-5. If that happens, Yo-Kai watch on PS4 will be pulled out and considered rare in the future.
How about acquiring the remaining IP of Sony's Japan Studios. I know it's impossible but Sony neglect their earliest studios while focusing the market to West.
Konami? Since one of Japan-exclusive is a hit, it's possible but the cost, all their IP wil be Nintendo exclusive, goodbye ports. Probably, Kojima will take the Metal Gear franchise to his property.
Buying RARE back to Microsoft is most likely possible. They also neglect the said studio.
There's so many possiblities. Who knows what might Nintendo's next move.
I actually think they should acquire the playtonic team.
Nintendo should buy SEGA.
Shame they couldn't of found the money to buy Rare when it mattered
@dannym2091 even just to have that IP available!
@quinnyboy58 Excatly currently being wasted with Microsoft
Nintendo buys Game Freak just to dissolve them and give the Pokémon rights to another Nintendo-owned studio.
@mariomaster96
GF would be pretty dumb to sell ngl.
@Screen Ofc it would be dumb for GF to sell Pokemon since without Pokemon GF would be done for
But it would still be nice to see an actual competent developer developing a main pokemon game
@Kyranosaurus I think even the WiiU ultimately even made money, especially given how much of its IP is the foundation for the Switch with BOTW, MK8D and the other ports to an extent...but yeah, even in the darkest days hey had billions in cash and cash equivalents.
No nintendo don't be a Microsoft be happy with what you have
@sanderev yes please! Also: Capcom, Konami and Bandai Namco
Buy Team Cherry. Get the exclusives on new Hollow Knights and then give them the future 2D Metroid games. One can dream.
@MarzoriuM Capcom doesn't need to be bought. They are doing just fine with Ace Attorney, SF, RE, MH. Also making RE exclusive to Nintendo platforms forever will probably generate a lot of backslash to a lot of people.
Konami would be interesting to buy. They can have control on Silent Hill and MGS.
But what I think on who should Nintendo buy is PlatinumGames or Koei Tecmo. Nintendo has very good relations with both companies so buying PlatniumGames means they can have Platinum work on Nintendo 1st party software and also new IP.
Nintendo owns the rights to the Fatal Frame franchise but maybe they can acquire Koei Tecmo for more of those Musou games exclusively for switch.
So in my opinion, Nintendo should acquire Konami, Platinum Games, or Koei Tecmo
Watch them buy Xbox from Microsoft and blow our minds 😂
@chardrich buying either Konami, Platinum Games or Koei Tecmo would be a power move for Nintendo.
Maybe Nintendo could get the rights to a certain franchise like Fatal Frame or something like that. If Nintendo were to do that, then all new games would belong to Nintendo.
In my honest opinion, if Nintendo were to co own the rights to a franchise, it would be Ace Attorney imo. I will say why
Ace Attorney always had a long history with Nintendo consoles although mainly handhelds. Not only that but its a money making thing for Capcom on Nintendo consoles. The trilogy is an example on how well AA sells on Nintendo consoles.
Maybe the new AA game could become NS exclusive for all I know
@chardrich Nintendo doesn't want rare, they never really wanted rare at all, so face it, banjo-kazooie will NEVER be a Nintendo IP, and they should not buy level 5, level 5 should go out of business and sell their IPs to companies that aren't Nintendo
Yacht Club, Team Cherry, Image & Form
There would be some irony if they bought Square Enix after Square abandoned them during the PS1/N64 era.
They should've acquired Alpha Dream
@mariomaster96 I’ve been saying that for years!
@mikegamer They basically did. They hired all the AlphaDream employees. They just avoided saddling themselves with AlphaDreams debt, and it's not like the company had any IP.
@chardrich Level-5 may have IPs, but the company itself is a disaster. Whoever buys them would get dragged down with them.
Konami is a similar factor, most of their value these days is in Pachinko, not something Nintendo has shown any interest in.
How is it that HAL Labs still isn't owned by Nintendo? I'm not the biggest fan of corporate consolidation but that one does leave me scratching my head from time to time.
Buy Sega. Then just maybe we could finally get games for franchises not named or associated with Sonic and Yakuza. Fire Emblem X Shining Force? Yes, please. A new Skies of Arcadia, Dragon Force, Shinobi, a compilation of Sega's amazing catalog of Arcade games...the possibilities are endless. And let's not forget a Switch remaster of F-Zero GX/AX (which was developed in collaboration with Sega) while we're at it.
@mariomaster96 GameFreak doesn't own Pokemon. TPC owns most of it, Nintendo also already owns a part.
@mariomaster96 this times 100!
GF cant handle pokemon anymore.
I only see Nintendo acquiring Intelligence System because of Fire Emblem and Paper Mario and a port studio like Gurezzo in the near future
Eh. All I want is new games, or to see Nintendo’s exsisting IPs get a big bombastic treatment like some western franchises.
@Octane I'm aware that GF doesn't own 100% of Pokemon.
Also Pokemon isn't directly owned by TPC since Pokemon is shared by GF, Nintendo and Creatures Inc which together created TPC who is responsible to oversee everything pokemon related (video games, anime, TCG, merch etc)
But I guess if Nintendo would buy GF then Nintendo would own probably over 50% of Pokemon and therefore would make it easier for them to decide how to handle the series
@desireefan36 Who hurt you?
On topic: Playtonic would be a perfect fit for them, let them work on their dead franchises.
@mariomaster96 I'd rather Nintendo EPD work on a new Pokemon game, specifically the team responsible for Breath of the Wild.
@mikegamer alpha dream no longer exists
@anoyonmus Nintendo will never buy any of those companies
@desireefan36 you never know
@Thelastjedi2007 Nintendo will never buy Microsoft
@chardrich sony will never allow Nintendo to buy any part of their company, also sony's last Japanese studio has already been shut down
@Arkay Nintendo is highly unlikely going to buy platonic
Nintendo would most likely buy game freak and intelligent systems only to ensure that fire emblem and pokemon are 1st party games
There's any number of devs I'd like to see Nintendo buy.
SEGA
Konami
PlatinumGames
Rare
Playtonic
MercurySteam
Bandai Namco, or at least the team that made Smash, Pokken, and New Pokemon Snap
Game Freak I would say give them the BotD with Legends Arceus before pulling the trigger there. It looks very promising and I think Game Freak is starting to understand what fans want out of console Pokemon now.
Out of all of those, I think MercurySteam might be the most feasible so they could have a dedicated Metroid developer, but they're probably going to want to see them build more of a track record before pulling the trigger on that.
@desireefan36
This is a certified Terry Syvertson moment.
Nintendo has always seemed to play it safe when it came to acquisitions. It was always more about partnerships and exclusivity rights of a single game rather than a whole company.
mmm.... mario kart 9?
even in the darkest days hey had billions in cash and cash equivalents.
@rockodoodle Since the Famicom was released, this may have been true. But Nintendo was rather threatened in the early '80s, when Universal wanted to claim a character you somewhat resemble: https://historyofyesterday.com/the-ape-lawsuit-that-nearly-destroyed-nintendo-6b1cb251488c
If I had 9.2 billion and had to spend 7 billion to acquire a software company, I'm not buying. Now if I have 9.2 billion just to spend on a software company and that's not all I have then maybe.
Interesting to see how they invest their money. They aren't going to 'buy a Bethesda' with it lol. Sounds more like something to help develop future gameplay to me.
These guys should grab Level 5 while there is still a chance and anything Brownie Brown or Creature related.
Given the reasoning for Next Level Games, I could see their near constant collaboration with Bandai Namco and Koei Tecmo leading to something here. Wayforward would be pretty rad for the ips, but they're fairly small as a company and I think Nintendo would be looking for expanding their offices over getting Shantae.
I'm seeing some love for Level 5 here and, as much as I'd like for them to continue on, I don't see Nintendo performing a rescue with the current stated reasoning.
Anyone got any idea how much any other companies are worth?
Even if the price was right, I can’t imagine Capcom or Square (or Ubisoft or Take 2 if we look outside Japan) would be interested, they’ve each had too much success recently on other consoles.
Sega or Namco would be a good fit and have both been working closely with Nintendo in recent years, but I imagine they’re too expensive. Would grab serious headlines though.
I think Level 5 and maybe Konami are more plausible, but not sure Nintendo would be interested. I’m sure Platinum have said they want to become even more independent and publish their own games, so they’re out of the running too.
Koei-Tecmo seems a reasonable bet, but outside of the Hyrule (and FE) Warriors titles, have they worked together that much?
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed I was going to say the same thing. Especially the sand effects in that Egyptian level. All I could think about was how amazing it would be to apply those effects to a new 1080 Snowboarding game....
They should purchase Sega
They should buy Rare again and acquire what's left of AlphaDream.
Something like Microsoft's Bethesda acquisition is out of the question. Spending 7.5 billion when you're Microsoft is one thing, but spending that amount when it drops your cash reserves to less than a quarter of what they were for the sake of getting an extra game every few years doesn't make a huge amount of sense, especially when the lean years come again (and whether due to external or internal factors, history states clearly that they will). Moves along the lines of Next Level would make more sense to ensure they don't have another Rare-style loss of IP.
Thats the attitude I like to hear. Don't get carried away like Microsoft tends to and choose wisely. Think about what companies could get better under their ownership and benefit from Nintens culture and how they benefit from who ever they picked up.
Well the Monolith Soft acquisition gave Nintendo the technology to generate vast open world games not just Xenoblade but Zelda and maybe pokemon legends. Let’s hope they purchase a company with great online next.
Grasshopper would be a pretty good one in my opinion. They would probably be quite cheap.
@Bolt_Strike Nintendo would most likely only buy game freak and intelligent systems, they have no interest or intentions of buying any companies to save them, nor would they ever buy bandai namco or koei tecmo, and Nintendo has absolutely no interest in owning rare, if they had any intentions of owning rare they would have bought rare to keep them instead of letting Microsoft buy them, also Microsoft allows rare to do whatever they want and rare is allowed to make whatever games they want and right now rare is working on a new perfect dark game
I've always wanted Nintendo to acquire capcom as the history, ip and developers are amazing and with a watchful Nintendo eye the games could be even better on both sides, same with namco which Nintendo tried to acquire before,
As always once a developer has been purchased it is extremely unlikely we would see their games on another console, it's not impossible but because capcom has games that go back to the nes the library is massive and as a Nintendo exclusive, Nintendo would benefit and would be stronger!
It could buy ips from konami as it has licensed them off of konami before and if konami want to sell then I would actively pursue them (Hudsonsoft properties also)
Platinum games would be awesome as they have some talented developers and could be another monolithsoft for Nintendo
Koei techmo would be another good buy as they co own the project zero series with them,
The worry is there are so many dormant ips that Nintendo dont use and I think they need to buy a studio full of talent to compliment them and help get quality games out and make full use of their ips
@Kyranosaurus laughs in being worth 60 yen in 1964
@desireefan36 It's not about "saving" companies as much as whether or not the IPs and talent are worth making money on. The moves people are suggesting are so Nintendo can acquire/secure the rights to certain IPs. I think acquiring new IPs from certain developers might be a worthwhile move considering Nintendo's tenuous third party support and the need to fill their lineup more and more. It's more a matter of if these companies and IPs can fit their vision that they would have to decide. Nintendo owning the rights to IPs like Sonic, Bayonetta, Castlevania, Bomberman, Yooka-Laylee, etc. or having a dedicated team to work on some of the more neglected IPs like DK and Metroid would help insulate the lineup against game droughts and keep players engaged in their consoles.
I see everyone here talking about Nintendo acquiring Capcom, Gamefreak, Konami, etc.
But is no one going to mention how cool it would be if they were to acquire Vanillaware?
C'mon, people, we need Odin Sphere and Dragon's Crown on Switch!!!!
@Bolt_Strike I suggest quitting while you’re ahead. The one you’re replying to is Terry Syvertson someone well known on Twitter and YouTube for bullying, harassing, and sending death threats to anyone that doesn’t share the same opinions as he does or makes jokes.
This article makes me think of the Wario World commercial:
The wording of the statement sounds more hardware related so like if someone tried to buy Nvidia such that Nintendo would lose access to the Switch tech.
@chardrich I would say rare would be possible a few years ago but a) Microsoft and Nintendo are in a relationship right now where I don't think it would happen, and B) Sea of Thieves is doing pretty good for Microsoft
@chardrich I really agree with Nintendo buying Level-5 that would be a good win for Nintendo and makes sense. Konami would probably be a good idea especially if there's a way we can get a MGS game but Rare might be a waste of money as they don't do much anymore.
I hope Nintendo acquires more IP, but slowly and considerately. Nintendo is, at heart, a very capitalist, money hungry company, but their games show more polish, quality, personality, and charm than a lot of the rest of the industry. Acquiring companies is certainly good for them and the companies they acquire with Retro being able to make the prime series in a way that normal Nintendo probably would have never done, but still showing the same level of quality and polish, and Next Level having amazing animation to bring to the table for existing and new IP. This all is great, and I hope Nintendo can grab some companies (especially passionate indie devs like Team Cherry, Yacht club, etc), however I worry that if they start buying companies often, things will end up like Microsoft. Microsoft infamously buys a bunch of companies, then they lose their charm, lose their creativity, slow down their production, fall to the wayside, and other such things. I mean, lets be honest, Retro hasn't made a new game in YEARS (yes, I know MP4 is coming) and although I think Nintendo has handled that company better than some of Microsofts, it's definitely a risk to buy other companies
@Grumblevolcano
Nvidia is worth $360+ billion. No one is buying Nvidia, not even the $1 trillion+ companies like Google/Apple/Microsoft/Amazon.
@Octane
Nintendo, GameFreak, and Creatures Inc each owns 1/3rd of The Pokemon Company. Nintendo also owns the Pokemon trademark and the names of each Pokemon.
Anyways, the idea that Nintendo will "buy" GameFreak and "give" the Pokemon IP to another developer like Monolith Soft is ludicrous and will never happen.
Lol @ all these saying that they should acquire other developing companies when they have enough already and they're still neglectful of their IPs that aren't either Mario, Zelda, or Smash (and to an extent; one lucky random one which is usually Animal Crossing or Splatoon).
So, yeah what I'm saying if you're unlucky enough they're buying out the one that you're fond of, you can say goodbye to your favorite franchise(s) 😂
(It won't surprise me if Nintendo goes the way of Konami in the distant future and only makes something specific non-video game related.)
@Bolt_Strike
Uhhh you know Rare is owned by Microsoft lol?
@COVIDberry thx for sharing this article! I kinda knew about Kirby, but didn’t realize the story behind it.
@Slowdive
Yeah, it's pretty obvious people didn't actually read the headline and are now just listing companies with IPs they like as candidates for Nintendo to purchase, even though Nintendo has shown no interest in purchasing companies for the sake of obtaining IPs.
@desireefan36 I know, just saying they should have when they had the chance.
@ImBackBB
Anyone who thinks Nintendo is going to stop making video games in favor of Pachinko isn't living in reality.
@westman98
I didn't say Pachinko. 😚
I doubt Nintendo could purchase Game Freak outright, i mean they have the money but it'll probably cost them a hell of a lot more than they would want to pay.
I mean a total buy out of Game Freak would likely cost in the region of 5b i mean sure Nintendo could do that but would they want too? I doubt it.
A good idea for Nintendo would be to buy out multiple indie developers and make a ton of exclusive Indie games.
@mariomaster96 Neither TPC nor GF will let that happen.
@ImBackBB
Nice edit 😜
BTW anyone who think Nintendo only cares about Mario/Zelda/Smash/Animal Crossing/Splatoon also don't live in this reality.
@westman98 The amount of times I've seen people suggest companies should just buy another dev is baffling IMO.
@BiscuitCrumbsInMyBed yes it’s still one of the coolest games on the switch. They should do the next Star Fox.
I think by far the smartest buy for Nintendo would be Platinum games. Similar to Next Level, they already have a close working relationship with them and Platinum is so talented. Plus they are very Japanese focused and put an emphasis on gameplay which is Nintendo's mantra.
I wish Nintendo had bought Atlus when they were for sale a couple of years back, Atlus is so good at what they do.
@Octane
It's just console war nonsense.
"Look at Microsoft, they just bought companies A, B, C, so Nintendo/Sony must go tat-for-tat and buy companies X, Y, Z" is a common sentiment.
"I think Developer X sucks, Nintendo should buy them and then give their IP to Developer Y, who I think doesn't suck" is apparently another common sentiment on this website lol.
@dannym2091
They had majority stake in Rare when they mattered, and sold their share of the company when they didn’t. There are only two games I would like to see released on Switch: Killer Instinct and Rare Replay.
@ImBackBB Most of the IPs they've neglected were neglected because they didn't sell well enough to make them money (F-Zero, Golden Sun, Earthbound/Mother). For the most part, the only IPs that sell relatively well that are being neglected are DK, Metroid, and Star Fox, they're not facing a crisis of being too undermanned to make the IPs they want to make aside from needing maybe 1 or 2 more dev teams. And regardless, that still doesn't make acquiring more devs a bad idea because they need new blood to work on those games. Either way, they need more hands working on Nintendo games. Their output isn't quite as much as we'd like (granted, the last year has been utterly devastated by COVID, but even before then 2018 was a tad light on games and could've used one or two more heavy hitters), so either several new studios that could work on some of the neglected IPs and new ones, or an existing studio with its own stable of IPs would help Nintendo output a more steady stream of games.
@ImBackBB
I agree! Nintendo has so many great franchises that it’s a bit bewildering that people would rather have a steady diet of the same four franchises than have the floodgates open.
@Bolt_Strike
Punch Out Wii sold reasonably well (1.5 million or so, I think). Great game!
I think companies like Platinum, Grasshopper, Playtonic, and MercurySteam could be good purchases.
Who knows if Nintendo will purchase any companies any time soon, though
Don’t know why everyone’s playing Microsoft with Nintendo’s money - pretty clear they’d only be interested in buying technology, either hardware or software, not game IPs.
Also I don’t understand the Rare love in the forum. Is it because they’re “the ones that got away”? It’s been 15 years, and I’m still waiting for the Rare game to come out I wished was on a Nintendo console, let alone was interested in.
@Spiders Rare was good back in the day, most of the ones that made our beloved childhood games are no longer part of the company. Old Rareware deserves my adoration, new Rare not so much( Sea of Thieves looks great though.).
At the very least I enjoyed their IP's and would love to see some of them be rereleased.
I guess you had to be there in those times to understand.
Honestly I just want to see them buy the Bayonetta IP from Sega and maybe Platinum Games too, just to make her an official Nintendo character.
They should acquire panic button and sabre interactive. Give them the backing to make something awesome for the switch or the funding to continue to port/optimize games for the switch.
They need to go ahead and grab Capcom 😤
@COVIDberry
Thanks for the link and good read, my furry friend! 😄
It’d been a while since I read about that King Kong vs Donkey Kong lawsuit. I’m glad that story had a happy ending!
I personally think Nintendo should stay the course and only gradually acquire vendors they’ve had success working with, like Next Level games. If new tech arises that they need to jump on quickly, like maybe going all 4K, that’s when they’ll want to spend on M&A. Otherwise, keep the money in-house and keep the momentum going!
Nintendo should spend the money to create an online service that doesn't suck. NSO is just the worst.
They should buy Sega. Then they would own Atlus as well! Then we can hear the sorrowful cries of Sony diehards since Atlus will then be a Nintendo exclusive!
Dammit the thumbnail got me excited for a new Wario game!
I would love for Nintendo to invest in some more studios, particularly some smaller currently indie ones (if those studios would be open to it). But I think they’d have to keep them small and let them keep doing what they’re doing.
I feel like Nintendo have fallen back into their ‘successful and safe’ mode recently where they start to overly rely on their sure fire hits like Mario, Zelda and Pokémon at the cost of new franchises and smaller ones. They did publish some small third party titles like Good Job and The Stretchers but they didn’t feel very supported. Prior to Pokémon Snap I can’t remember the last Nintendo title that I was hyped for? Maybe Luigi’s Mansion 3?
I have a late model wife for sell.
Abunch of the early comments are talking about buying ips, but the article said the money was for tech companies.
Nintendo loves innovative hardware. This may be their way of considering the next big tech leap to stay unique and affordable.
They should buy Level-5, just so PS4 Yo-Kai Watch doesn't exist.
TBH, Nintendo could of saved AlphaDream when they went belly up, but the issue was that they had no real IPs to their name. Yes, they made the Mario & Luigi games, but Nintendo owns the IP even if AlphaDream was still around. That being said, Level-5's financial issues could be solved if Nintendo bought them, but I have a gut feeling Square-Enix wants them too. Level-5's IPs are more than enough for another company to throw them a Life Ring if and when they start to go under. Unless they go on a fire sale and have their IPs divided up to the highest bidder, I think Level-5 as a whole is worth saving. (That and I doubt they could sell the IP of Mighty Number 9 unless it was bundled with another IP. Yes, Level-5 owns the Concept. Maybe that's why they're having money problems?)
@NatiaAdamo
Yokai Watch collapsing in sales in Japan kinda makes Level-5 a worthless purchase.
@Mfreddy22 nooooo! Team Cherry are in a great spot and shouldn't sell. If they were in any financial danger I'd agree, but as is, they are one of the shinijg beacons of Australian game developers.
It’s fun to speculate, realistically Nintendo would probably acquire smaller companies.
Wayforward
Atooi
Yacht Club
Shin’en
If there's a company I'd like to see Nintendo acquiring is Konami. If not, at least the Hudson Soft IPs. Other than that, maybe MercurySteam as previously suggested so we can have a dedicated 2D Metroid developer. Maybe SEGA, but I'm totally ok if this one doesn't happen. Though if they do so, would they also get Atlus?
Maybe they should buy back Rare, ngl if they did that, then we could get Banjo and Kazzio on the switch
@AtlanteanMan
I would certainly welcome some AfterBurner action for real. Saddens me that it's hardly mentioned these days it seems.
...And it seems like the comment section is just westman98 and ImBackBB arguing with each other.
@Lord it’s playtonic
@Arkay I was! I loved DKC, KI, Goldeneye, and Jet Force Gemini. I just don’t think Rare has done anything close to reaching those heights since Nintendo sold them - not enough to want bring them back, for sure.
Has anyone bought an XBox for Rare games?
I wish console makers wouldn't buy out third-party game developers and publishers because it just ends up restricting titles.
Rare is not the company used to be. After they got all that fat ca$$h from Microsoft they just lost their desire to prove themselves again. So let them be. Nintendo should buy Sega/Atlus.
@Scrubicius good idea actually. I’m hoping the old fox hasn’t been retired yet.
@SeantheDon29 Truth. A proper sequel to Muramasa: The Demon Blade would be fan-freaking-tastic.
If only Nintendo bought Rare back then. They would've done wonders with the technology of the DS, Wii, Wii U, and Switch.
@Kyranosaurus,
Totally agree with you.
A lot of people on forums tend to ignore that Nintendo have always been in a good situation financially, the massive success of the DS and Wii gave them loads of room to have a poor performance with the Wii U, and they always had the 3DS to fall back on as well.
It always surprises me when some suggest Nintendo should go for the core market with a more traditional home console, and fight it out with Sony and Microsoft, as at best that's a three way share of 180 million consoles, and this would cost a fortune to even secure that share. Nintendo sold around 90 million consoles with the 3DS and Wii U combined, which would have still made them far more money than a share with the PS4 and Xbox One.
@chardrich Dude I agree with you but I have to correct you...
Nintendo CAN'T buy Rare! Lol
Rare is Xbox's one of the most valuable studios, their last game Sea of Thieves is Xbox's most successful new ip and is Rare's best selling game of all time, and they're making a new ip for Xbox Series X.
Level 5 would be a logic one even tho Nintendo didn't buy Alpha Dream (which it was in the same financial situation as Level 5)
And I don't think Sony will ever sell one of their ip's, sadly games like Gravity Rush and Ape Escape are dead :/
@mariomaster96 Doing that is a waste as GameFreak is not advancing technology wise.
@Dany06 More like their ONLY new IP. However, prior to Sea of Thieves, they were a financial disaster for MS.
@ivory_soul I'm talking about Microsoft when I'm talking about new ips, lol.
Microsoft had Quantum Break, Project Spark, Risese Son of Rome ,Sunset Overdrive(well not a their ip but you got the idea, it flopped..)
And if you're talking about Rare, then yes Rare didn't do to well (besides Rare Replay and the early kinect games, those were successful).
At the end of the day, Rare is valuable for Xbox, Sea of Thieves is doing amazingly well on both Xbox and PC and their next new ip had a lot of potential.
@Spiders that was my point as well, currently they haven't done much. Aside from Sea of Thieves...nope, nothing worthwhile.
@rockodoodle you are spot on. How much of the revenue is from software that was initially developed for Wii U and taken from Nintendo's coffers during that period. They are killing it with Switch, but 40-50% of the foundation work was already in place. Reggie was right with his "failure forward" quote.
Firstly I'd like Nintendo to buy SNK and keep it away from the murderous dictator MBS.
Then I'd like them to sweep up Konami and Sega to keep their properties going. Possibly Capcom as well since they also like to sit on all the good stuff.
@FargusPelagius you can even argue Splatoon 2 and Smash Ultimate to a degree. The WiiU tennis seemed half baked, and Mario Tennis Aces was a carry over. But MK8D and BOTW alone account for 56MM. I think u can attribute 100MM copies sold pretty easily to IP largely developed during the WiiU era
@Arkay My bad! I don’t know why I read it that way
@johnvboy Hey there!!! 😁👍🏽
I remember you over at neogaf. I remember seeing you battling Sony Fanboys left and right like a true hero you are. As a Nintendo fan I am proud to see you on our side.
@mariomaster96 acquiring game freak would be a good idea but they may want more than that 1 trillion. I would be happy if they went ahead and acquired inti creates.
@mrbogus SNK maybe but I don't think capcom or konami will sell. Just buying the rights to mega man would-be enough for me.
Nintendo mentioned buying technology, so I'm imagining (hoping) it'll be someone to help with controller development and improving gyro controls for future systems. Motion controls too, since those have been something Nintendo's been coming back to pretty regularly, and those just keep improving.
If it's an acquisition... honestly, I'd expect it from devs who are either fairly small, or those that Nintendo worked closely with. Game Freak may as well be owned by Nintendo, since Pokemon and a few titles they make are published by them anyway. HAL's in a similar position, Kirby and even more of their stuff is mainly on Nintendo consoles, barring phone titles and some really old hardware. The most confusing is actually Intelligent Systems. As far as I can tell, the first game they launched outside of a Nintendo system is Fire Emblem Heroes, and that's published by Nintendo.
@Elijja yep so it is.
Would hope for an mix of indie and 3rd party ips. I doubt it would make sense to buy big 3rd party studios as they cost an lot when what you want is it up.
Studios I love to see them buy would be wayforward, and the studios behind the 3ds Zelda remakes and who made the Samus return ports
I'd like to request seventeen dollars for a push broom rebristling.
If Nintendo were to make acquisitions along those lines:
SEGASAMMY: Game Studios, SEGA TOYS, (Consolidated) Arcade & Leisure, Animation
(Prior Contributions to Nintendo: Mario & Sonic, F-Zero series)
BANDAI NAMCO: Game Studios, Bandai’s Toy division, and Namco’s arcade divisions, Animation, and Leasure
(Prior Contributions to Nintendo: Mario Kart series, Super Smash Bros. Series, Mario Baseball series, ARMS, Pokken Tournament, New Pokémon Snap)
KOEI TECMO: Animation
(Prior Contributions to Nintendo: Metroid Other M, Hyrule Warriors series, Fire Emblem Warriors, Pokémon Conquest Fire Emblem: Three Houses)

@Amin_Parker,
The Avatar gave it away eh, nice to see you on here too, and I never battle just offer counter arguments, I would like a Ps5 if I could get my hands on one.
Been a massive Nintendo fan since the NES, that does seem such a long time ago.
@Lord would be a great team to acquire lots of ex rare talent
I could see Nintendo purchasing Platinum, Namco, or even Sega.
Less high profile acquisitions I could see would include Camelot or Level-5.
In terms of technology I can see them investing more money in streaming. They aren't going to release a console that will compete in terms of power with the other consoles. They've already experimented with streaming, I can see that being more common in the future as they try to bridge that gap in some form or another.
Nintendo.
Panic Button.
NOW
@CorvoRevo they'd certainly help with both Breath of the Wild 2 and Metroid Prime 4, just for optimisations. They could also look at Links awakening, age of calamity and demon X machina for tweaks.
So they're prepared for opportunity to arrive.
That's nice to know.
Maybe they should try and buy the Xbox division! Haha.
they are talking about aquiring new tech if needed. Wish they could broadcast the top screen of the DS to a tv
Furukawa talked about buying technology companies if necessary to keep up with technological changes. The NL comments are talking about studio acquisitions.
Do you guys even make it past the tutorial of a video game?
@NEStalgia Well, they DID buy Next Level Games in February, so that might of gotten the wheels of thought turning. My theory is that they only buy once a company says they are looking to sell. I have a feeling this is because of what happened with Rare and them taking the relationship for granted before Microsoft yoinked the company out of the blue.
@HammerGalladeBro if Nintendo does buy SEGA, and since SEGA owns Atlus then yes, Nintendo will also own Atlus as well
