Should I get this game, bc I keep hearing people getting bored in like three weeks, and that it takes forever to get anything, hell the town hall is like a week.
Now I can wait for all this stuff, but will I run out of things to do?
I also hear the game is unfinished, and that there is only one Shop upgrade,
I have Played NL, and I played it on the daily, it took me three years before I stopped playing it, and even after that I would get on every now and then.
I also heard of the unfair Money grinding but that one sounds pretty stupid.
The major one I'm really worried about, is the villager's and Nookzon, Do the Villagers really get stale that fast, and dose the Villager with the same type really just copy form another villager?
And about Nokzone, do I need it to really get all I can out of this game? I don't really have friends that own this game let alone want to trade or have said item I want.
So with all of this I have asked, And with somebody with three years of NL under there belt, (First AC game btw) Whould you suggest its worth getting, and if so what would you rate it?
Darn it. I saw this and got super excited for a surprise DLC announcement. :/
Kinda hoping E3 brings news for a huge update. This game is dead as hell I haven't touched it in months. Sitting as is it is definitely the worst mainline animal crossing.
@Snatcher The game definitely has it's shortcomings, but I don't feel as negative about it as many people out there (not even close). Personally, I have spent hundreds of hours and I'm still going back to it. I think that it all depends on how much you like to customize and how creative you are. From my perspective, while the game did take some steps back in socializing with animals, it does have the charm of the franchise but you could find frustrating that so many features are missing. It may be the least replayable of the franchise for many, but even so it's still a game that the average person will spend a lot of time in it compared to many other games, so it's hard that you won't get value for your money.
I'd give it a 9 out of 10. To this day, I love having my own personal island and I had a lot of great experiences with it. Villagers might not be as charming as in other entries, but they have still managed to make me care about them and chuckle on several occasions.
An advice: dialogue isn't as limited as people make it out to be, however it's not because they are lying about it or anything. It just seems that animals have limited "small talk" before actually commenting different stuff, so you have to talk to them more than 4 times a day to pass that small talk part.
Unrelated but I've been meaning to tell you: I love your Snatcher pic. A Hat in Time is my favourite 3D platformer ever and Snatcher is simply the most amazing character.
I couldn't find the preview on that Barnes & Noble page, hmm... Maybe me (on mobile device), maybe the link. If me, could anyone point out where to find it on that page?
"I have played NL", makes me think NintendoLife. Which game are you referring to? scratches head Personally I stopped playing New Horizons already after like the third mission or so from Nook. I loved the GameCube version to bits, thought maybe I've just grown old and dull since the game didn't grab me. In the old games one of my fondest memories was getting up each week to hear KK play songs, and I loved finding the hidden Nintendo games and interacting with Nook/paying off my debt. Didn't get the same vibe here.
@Snatcher,
For me it's the best in the series and am up to 1250 hours in, still visiting my island everyday,
a solid 9/10 from me, yes there are things missing from New Leaf, but they are nowhere near as bad as some are suggesting, and the new features are an awesome addition, the core game play is just the same, although this game as los more new dialogue from your villagers, with the usual repetition thrown in of course.
The Nintendo online app is a great companion as texting messages to online friends is far easier, especially when playing in docked mode, and when you add other players as best friends meeting up is very easy, also there is a daily Nook point bonus scheme witch gives you some cool items.
@roy130390 HMM Thanks for your opinion, I think I will get a few more before I try to get it, form how you worded it, its not perfect like many games, but even with tits issue's the game is still as great as other animal crossings. And I think i'm a pretty creative person so even more reason to get it.
I love my pick to, I have almost become my avatar, A hat in time is simply amazing, yet I haven't gotten the DLC, just the snatcher one LOL.
Snatcher Is also just simply an amazing character, A hat in time is underrated in my opinion, you don't hear many people talk about it. soundtrack is also just amazing, and wile the switch ver, has its issue's, it sure didn't stop it from becoming one of my Favorite 3D platformers of all time, And that's saying something, as I play lots of 3D platformers.
@johnvboy All positive feedback so far, I think i'm going to pick it up, just want to get about three more.
@Snatcher the town hall takes more along the lines of 2 weeks to get and the reason people usually get bored is because there’s nothing to do after that besides decorating and the system can be rather tedious and annoying, lacks furniture to actually decorate with and they barely add any more, and there’s also no building upgrades to look forward too unlike new leaf so it’s literally just decorating and talking to villagers. Not sure about the money problem but I know there are tricks to make money quick. Villagers 100% are that bad and get very stale very fast and due to the new system in place for friendship they never ask you requests or give you jobs until your at a higher friendship level so you have to sit through a lot of bad dialogue to get access to those. There are merits to the game but athers have already listed a few of those
@Snatcher Please tell me more about the tits issues.
@Dizzymario Two weeks, sound bad but I could make it work, do you think the game picks up after this?
@Snatcher,
As value for money goes it's a great purchase, and pretty sure around E3 time there will be some more updates.
Another thing that's often brushed over is how good the visuals are, the new museum is awesome and even on my 110 inch projection screen it still looks amazing.
The shop upgrade issue is moot, as you get a shopping app on your Nook phone, which is unlocked after you have spent a certain amount with the Nook brothers.
@gcunit Did I actually write that or is that a joke on how I say it a lot, or how I missed a is in its? in any case LOL.
@Snatcher,
Freudian slip i am sure.
@Snatcher the game does the opposite of pick up after that I’d argue those 2 weeks are the best time with the game because you always have stuff to do things to build and find etc and after that it falls off hard because that incentives gone and the decorating system is only really fun the first time you do it not taking into account the tediousness of it
@Dizzymario Thanks I will take this into account.
@Dizzymario,
To be honest I never remembered all that much to do in New Leaf, and I stopped playing after around 500 hours or so, the decorating is fun, and I like changing parts of my island and improving them all the time, my sister who was a massive New Leaf fan and played for years, bought a Switch for this new game and she is always starting over with her iisland.
Can see why some will find it tedious, but for me one of the best features of this new game.
@Snatcher I never thought I’d play it, during the last lockdown I thought why not I’ll just add it to my game collection , but playing it I have to say I really enjoyed it nice and relaxing just a chilled game once I have done everything it gets abit boring but there is something that draws u back my back catalog of games is unreal but Iv just wanted to play animal crossing very odd lol get it cheap can’t lose I say
@Snatcher,
I do feel a lot of people look at this game as an experience to beat etc, when it's just a day to day simulator, and like in real life some days you will have stuff to do, others you may only spend 10 minutes or so.
@johnvboy Ya I see you there, It it sounds like its great for thos day were I just don't got anything to play.
@Buckyooliver Got it thanks for the feedback.
@johnvboy there were shops to upgrade that lasted almost a year, club tortimer which you could do alone or with random people which gave you exclusive furniture and other stuff which you couldn’t get elsewhere and there is no alternative to that in NH, there were more actual events in new leaf and some of them were very creative like April fools or the solstices, there was the cafe where you could do the part time job, in the welcome amiibo update there was the campsite where there would be a new character each day and they were special characters that you could buy special items from, there were the 3ds and wii u in that same update that both let you play 2 very good minigames that gave you special rewards, pwp campsite villagers were way more interesting and actually had unique stuff to give and a variety of minigames to play, there was fortune cookies with cool furniture plus the general furniture in that game was far more varied and didn’t require a stupid crafting system to get half of it, and there were tons of PWPs to make and they just generally fit better than regular furniture in new horizons partly because of how much cooler they looked
Ah the kids will love it
@Snatcher If you get it maybe we can plus some others here can link up and trade resources!
@Dizzymario,
Yet I still stopped playing after 500 hours or so, and never returned to the game.
@Scrubicius,
Sounds good.
SW-8223-9981-3607
@johnvboy that’s on you buddy but it’s undeniable that new leaf had far more content and stuff to do than new horizons has even if you strip new leaf of its one update it still has tons more stuff to do than new horizons with its ten updates
@johnvboy also you spent 500 hours on the game? That’s not a bad amount of time at all?
@Snatcher I would echo what others have told you: the game is great and I would give it a 9.5 out of 10. I put more than 500 hours into New Leaf, and I am over 450 in New Horizons.
You know the game, so I won't bore you with details. But you did say in a previous post that you are creative. That is where I think New Horizons shines.
Likewise, I am creative. With collecting, crafting and most of all terraforming, I have continued playing the game over a year. There are so many ways to modify the island. Is it as detailed as Minecraft? No. But all creativity works within constraints.
And honestly, the game is therapeutic for me. Because I designed an island that I really like, it is peaceful just to walk around every day and enjoy it.
@Snatcher well I’ve put over a hundred hours into it and was hooked for almost a solid year so I’d say it was worth the money if you like this sort of life sim of a game. Now I’m completely bored of it and haven’t played it in months. I do intend to go back but they’ve got to add something more than piddley cosmetics. You may not notice this as much as others who have played ones in the past but it is still missing so much that other games in the line have had. The sense of progression in this one is worse than the others as it’s lacking so much. I believe it will be added at some point, and I’m sure the pandemic took a hit to this one. That’s my two cents tho, yes I got my money’s worth but it has become a slog and didn’t last me as long as games of the past did.
Another sad example how the jp cover design is amazing and the western one just can't cut it
@Snatcher - All Animal Crossing games are mechanically shallow and get boring eventually, but this one kept me playing for longer than NL, and overall I think it's the best one so far, so I'd suggest picking it up if you invested that much time in the previous entry.
@johnvboy Added! Are you also on Discord?
@Snatcher I will say this. Work at your own pace and try and pinpoint your theme for your island. The game could do with more updates with more features if we're comparing to previous titles. But I also think alot of people powered through the game very quickly and burned out fast. I've put in 1000 hours and maybe have missed one or two days since launch. But there have been ebbs and flows in my playing time. Usually depending on my inspiration for an island project or building friendship with my villagers.
I've had to remember to slow down and not feel like I need to collect everything all at once. One of the fun things about the game is discovering new recipes to craft items.
That leads me to another thing in regards to villagers. You'll get attached to some. But don't be hesitant to rotate villagers out. And try to keep a diverse mix of personalities as they help keep the dynamic fresh and each personality offers certain DIY recipes you won't get from others
@Peteykins @dugan @TYRANACLES @Geonjaha @UmbreonsPapa All of your opinions have been taken into account.
I have think I have made my choice, From what others have said creativity will give you a longer time with this game, and the last comment saying I should make a town theme, really got me thinkin, And even the negative stuff, it sounds like stuff I should worrying about then and not now, and even when that time comes, its worth your money, I'm 87% sure i'm going to get this game now, thanks guys.
My biggest beef with New Horizons is that if you ever put the game aside for a while, it punishes you in typical Animal Crossing fashion by trashing your island. Then if/when you work up the gumption to jump back in, you spend all your time and energy getting it back to a somewhat respectable state, only to find yourself overwhelmed and burnt out all over again.
Wish there was something like New Leaf's ordinances to alleviate this to some degree. It's such a chill game to dive into here and there otherwise. There should always be those anti-tedium measures baked in for types who aren't/can't be quite as invested though.
I'm not too into Animal Crossing, but this manga actually looks kind of interesting. Might pick that up, but I'm probably just going to rent New Horizons the game from my library if I want to try it out. It's really not my kind series, but I feel like I can relax with it for a bit. I mainly just want to see what the latest entry is like since I got bored with New Leaf, but got a little into Pocket Camp a long time ago.
I think the New Leaf vs. New Horizons debate will never end. I often get the feeling that some people would have been perfectly happy if New Horizons was nothing more than an HD refresh of New Leaf with a couple of new features thrown in. These are the same people who go on and on about how wonderful the "life sim" aspect of New Leaf was, which leaves me scratching my head, because in the hundreds of hours I've spent with New Leaf and New Horizons, I honestly don't see any significant difference between villager interactions in the two games.
Then you have the people who complain about the lack of "unlockables" in New Horizons while in the same breath they complain about having to "grind" for things like item recipes, so they seem to be of two minds about this sort of thing.
The other thing New Leaf fanboys love to do is to list all the things from New Leaf that are "missing" from New Horizons, but they never seem to look at it from the other direction and note all the things in New Horizons that are "missing" from New Leaf. It's not that New Horizons has fewer features and activities, it just has different features and activities.
Are there some features from New Leaf that I would like to have seen brought over to New Horizons? Of course, but I also know if I ever tried playing New Leaf again, there are a number of New Horizons features that I would greatly miss. Each one is its own game, and I think they are equally enjoyable, but of course, individual results may vary.
@Scrubicius,
Sorry for the late reply, been at work today, will accept as soon as I get home, not on discord.
@Snatcher,
I think you will be more than happy with it.
@Dizzymario,
I loved New Leaf and have played and enjoyed every game since Wild World, and not calling any of them, it's just I do not recall any of these games having a much deeper experience than any other game in the series.
But from time played, I have to say New Horizons has me hooked more than any other game in the series.
@Mountain_Man,
Same here, just do not recall all this hidden depth and nuance in previous games, sure there is some content missing, but not missing all that much imho, and the new game some nice new features in it too.
And if Nintendo had simply remade New Leaf in HD, people would have still complained.
This is something I'd definitely buy if I ever cone across it.
@Snatcher - personally, if you played New Leaf for 3 years and kept coming back to it, this will do the same for you. This game I would best describe as “New Leaf HD Plus”. I continue to enjoy it.
I agree with JohnVBoy’s comments above.
@Magrane Yep, I mean today I just got The fortune telling shop, But its been a long three years, and i'm ready to pack it up.
@Scrubicius,
I can't find your request, just checking I sent you the right code.
SW 8223-9981-3607
Dream address DA-0957-2799-1843
@greehnery,
If you decorate your island with lots of paths or custom flowers etc, the weeds can't take hold if you leave it for a while.
@Snatcher The fortune telling shop was the only Main Street location that I never managed to unlock in New Leaf. I'm not even sure what you needed to do to earn it. I also missed out on a number of town projects and building exteriors for whatever reason. I think there were a lot of hidden mechanics in New Leaf that made certain things a lot more obscure than they needed to be.
@Mountain_Man you need to get your fortune told 20 times, then you can get it build't, I Totally forgot about it bc it just seemed like it wasn't real.
@Scrubicius,
Accepted.
I can't help but think of ACNH as a fascinating case with Nintendo.
In hindsight, it seems apparent that Nintendo planned on simply dropping New Horizons into the wild, and move on after selling 1-3 million copies. Nintendo even admitted how surprised they were with its massive success.
But the interesting part to me is Nintendo's response, or lack of it. ACNH simply has continued chugging along with small holiday updates as if it never received such huge success in the first place. And to me, that has to indicate something.
Like others said, perhaps Covid really did cripple Nintendo's teams more than they have let on, and it prevented them from scrambling enough devs together to prioritize making new content for the game.
Or, perhaps the only devs remotely capable of making new content has already committed entirely to Splatoon 3, with no room for improvising. Covid could have guaranteed this, possibly already delaying Splatoon 3 development as it is.
Regardless, it's just very interesting to me that Nintendo even admitted to the press their conflict whether to choose between post-release content like nickel-and-dime micro transactions or fully paid expansions. They just don't seem to know what to do with the game's success.
@Snatcher
I'd say if you enjoyed NL you would probably enjoy Horizons. If you are really on the fence wait for the next update to decide. If the E3 update announcement is good, get it. I would say NL is the best Animal Crossing. With Horizons, there are ways it's better than NL and ways it's worse. You did say you were creative, then I am sure you could make your island quite wonderful. One of Horizons benefits are the updates, though it has been a while since they've added anything substantial.
@Saturn589 Thanks, about a year ago I would say I wasn't creative, but since I have started drawing I have gotten better at making OG stuff, I'm also a inspiration heavy guy, (But that goes for anything really) may it be something somebody else made, To hearing a random word, maybe a anime, Even with all this said does it still sound like a good creative game for me? Bc Right now I'm thinking of JP like town or A Town that splits to Grassy places, City, forest, Road, and so on.
@Snatcher if you played NL, then you know NH and about money grinding, welcome to the real world. But unlike the real world, there are a lot of helpful ways to make a quick buck in NH.
@Ulysses,
I know Nintendo would have been surprised by new horizons massive sales success, but doubt they would have been happy or even expecting only 1-3 million sales, New Leaf sold around 13 million copies and was the franchises biggest seller so far, and with the Switch's install base and the fact that Nintendo's games seem to sell their biggest numbers on the console, they must have been expecting at least New Leaf success, perhaps a little more.
As soon as I saw the reveal I new that New Leaf's sales milestone was in trouble, but it's actual success and speed of it still boggles my mind.
The surprise announcement at E3 will be the new paid DLC called Animal Crossing: Neu Horizons - Happy Home Designer.
You know that this is the AC game you all want!
@Snatcher, just incase you want one more viewpoint, here’s my thoughts with some context:
I watched my older brother play the GC one and I played every title religiously since then. I always buy the guidebook with the game and have a blast of putting in about 200-300 hours in the span of 1-3 months before I start to taper off. I would return to WW frequently, would start new towns in CF, and only popped back into NL occasionally just for old time’s sake as the years went by (but i never really put in too much more after the initial 200 hours). NH has followed that same pattern as NL for me: I put in about 230 hours over a couple of months and only return when getting nostalgic for the island, but I don’t really “play” it anymore and don’t think I will in the future (unless there is a major update).
From what I’ve read here, I think you’d definitely find it to be worth trying. Here’s what I would identify as the core experience:
@Mountain_Man put it best when saying it’s not less, just different. After the initial 2-week hump, I spent many hours planning and building the exterior of my island to make it have some really grand landmarks and it was great! The limitations of it (compared to something like minecraft) actually make it very fun imo. It’s like a puzzle to see how grand you can build that area of town given the tools. I’d say that this is the main appeal of this game.
Sidenote: the unlocking progression system in the first 2 weeks was great from what i remember. It felt like they took the long term unlocks from other games and just put all of that upfront. Once completing it, it’s up to you to take the island in the direction that you want. I don’t want every AC game to be like this but it was fun.
So with all of that being said, I often tell my friends who are newcomers to the AC series that NH is great, but not that much of a traditional AC game imo. To me, it’s almost more of a city builder sim than a life sim. WW made it feel like you were moving into an existing town and would talk to characters that had history and grew with you and the town as a whole. NH feels like a god sim where you get to build up an ideal village from scratch and the villagers are just like decorative pawns that exist as an excuse to have houses on the island. It’s not perhaps as dramatic as them being “lifeless” but for me at least, it is certainly not the appeal of this game.
TL;DR - other AC games felt like slowly growing with a community and NH feels like a god sim town builder. But, at the end of the day, I find both to be enjoyable.
@Snatcher You can always time hop. That way if you want to binge-play and get through the beginning of the game ASAP then you can. Time-hopping sometimes gets a bit of hate in the community but really it’s personal preference. I wouldn’t suggest time-hopping all the time as it can kill the enjoyment of the game but it’s always an option.
@DeathByLasagna @ERIC_MACK Thanks guys your feedback has been amazing, you guys can keep it coming if you want.
@Snatcher Like @Dizzymario said, the first 2 weeks to maybe a month if you take it slow is where New Horizons shines. The progression at the beginning is probably the best of the series, but after that you pretty much unlocked everything. After the start you can decorate your island to your own desire, but you will not unlock any shops, mini-games or be able to invite villagers over or do hide and seek with them.
If you are into decorating it will likely be worth it for the long term, but otherwise you should consider it as a good game for some weeks and then be done with it. You will not see much progression like New Leaf with the main street or Nook Cranny upgrades.
Overall I would say it is a good game and worth trying, but if you are less of a type to decorate your island it certainly is the weakest game of the series.
Edit: sorry I just noticed that your comment was from some months ago. I hate it when an article gets a small update and then shows up as new in the timeline.....
Everytime I see ACNH stuff I both really want it and really don't want it. I think the 600+ hours of playing the game during early covid makes me subconsciously associate it with both comfort and trauma.
@Snatcher I kinda got bored after around 250 hours... but uh... it was a whole heck of a lot of fun while I was enjoying it. I feel like anyone who's upset about a game that lasts as long as this one does is missing the point. Yeah there's a lot of stuff 'missing' but that's because this game does it's own thing instead of just retreading the previous game like most entries.
I enjoyed new horizons a lot more than new leaf. Still playing NH after 500 hours. Great game. Nook Miles was genius imo.
@Yanina They're basically the same sans for the title graphic, no?
Edit: That being said, the japanese title graphic is a lot more fun and fills the top of the image well.
@MajorTom No NO, its ok, I love getting advice, I still didn't end up getting the game, so your advice is a big help.
@Snatcher
I was also late to this game this time around.
I put 3 weeks in, just like you said. It was a chore and disappointing and I have stopped playing to move on to other games (Dragon Quest Builders2 for example.
original GC Animal Crossing is one of the games I have restarted and I love it to death. I have 800 hours in my New Leaf town too.
The latest AC is boring, and a padding-fesst of cycling.... and I mean do CONSTANT cycling through up to 6 or 7 tools with the D pad. What a game breaking kistake. They should have an on-screen toolbox to click with your thumb or the cursor.. I mean it, I spend hours going through the tools -all of them (pretty much) are needed just to get around the island all in one trip, so no- grabbing "what you need" and leaving the rest for quicker selecting would also be a game breaker.
Seriously, I do recommend waiting for the inevitable "welcome amiibo' type update before jumping in.
Just my .02 but I put that game down and barely felt like I missed out on an actual Animal Crossing game at all.
@msvt Thats another reason, were are the good updates? The big updates did nothing? Swimming, your telling me thats an update? your on a island, why isn't swimming the first part of the game?
New Horizons is the WORST game in the series!
@Snatcher
I wasn't around for it before any updates so I don't know if they made a difference. All I can tell you is that as a huge fan of this series, I actually recently went back and bought City Life to save for when I am really wanting some "new" animal crossing because this one left me feeling like I wasted my cash. It's funny because I went overboard beforehand and actually bought the AC Switch console. Oops. !
I really enjoyed New Horizon when it came out and happily ploughed over a hundred hours into it before I started to get bored. I haven't played it in a long time, but I still consider any game that gives you 100 hours of enjoyment a success. I might start over at some point, I'm sure with all the updates there's a lot of new content for me to check out.
@msvt Dang.
@Snatcher @msvt Just wanted to clarify that you don't have to cycle through the tools with the dpad only. The game has a neat quality of life thing where you can assign tools to what is essentially a quick select menu, and then bring up that menu to very easily select what tool you want to use. If you play smash, think of the way Shulk can activate his Monado Arts in ultimates
As for advice, it's totally up to you Snatcher. I adored New Leaf and did absolutely nothing to beautify my town, yet still played for about 3 years. I dropped New Horizons after the first couple of months because I'm simply not creative enough to make an island of my complete design. If you feel that you are creative enough for that and that appeals to you, do it! If not, I'd say it's not worth it
@Snatcher Since you asked (like, 4 months ago…), gonna give my take on New Horizons, too.
This was my first proper AC. I had dabbled in friends’ games before but not had my own. I was really surprised how much disappointment there is. The things people miss from previous games – pretend talking to computer animals, having NPCs change their stupid buildings, etc. – are exactly not the things I would want more of. I just want to build.
My island is like the Sagrada Familia – a work of unparalleled genius and beauty but, tragically, perhaps never to be completed.
If I do say so myself.
But, though – BUT. The reason I have had [let’s say “several”] hours of fun in ACNH is 100% down to Nookazon. I traded turnips to get mega-rich (I wrote an article about it on NL last year) and still now can afford absolutely anything I want whenever I want it. The trading process is insanely longwinded, but seeing people’s islands and showing mine while we trade is what keeps it acceptable.
So, on reflection, I think I’m playing a game Nintendo didn’t even design. I have no idea what it would be like to play without just having everything you want at all times. I guess this is how Elon Musk feels.
@Arcade_Tokyo Oh ok, So its Pretty good for a person who Loves to create and design.
@UsurperKing
I sure would be interested in cutting that way down. Is it the L button then selecting? Thanks for the info. I will look into it for another run at the game at some point. Thanks for the head up
Found it right on this site. This could help lighten the irritation level for me at some point.
https://www.nintendolife.com/guides/animal-crossing-new-horizons-tool-ring-how-to-quickly-switch-between-tools
@Snatcher
Everything you just wrote are essentially every issues I have with this game.
Tbh, there is a trend in Nintendo Switch games to cut content(Mario Party, Mario Tennis).
We were all hoping that missing parts would eventually come to the game later, but it never happened.
I totally respect those who love this game, but I find it awful, bland, repetitive, shallow...but cute. Lol
